We study H-alpha, far- and near-ultraviolet luminosity functions (LF) of the sample of 795 luminous compact star-forming galaxies with z<0.65. The parameters of optimal functions for LFs are obtained using the maximum likelihood method and the accuracy of fitting is estimated with the chi-squared method. We find that these LFs cannot be reproduced by the Schechter function because of an excess of very luminous galaxies. On the other hand, the Saunders function, the log-normal distribution and some new related functions are good approximations of LFs. The fact that LFs are not reproduced by the Schechter function can be explained by the propagating star formation. This may result in an excess of luminous starbursts with the mass of a young stellar population above 2*10^8 M_Sun as compared to the LF of the quiescent galaxies. The most luminous compact galaxies are characterised by H-alpha luminosities of > 5*10^{42} erg/s and star formation rates of > 40 M_Sun/yr.
We use the combined photometric SDSS + GALEX database to look for populations of luminous blue star-forming galaxies. These were initially identified from such a sample at redshifts near 0.4, using SDSS spectra. We make use of the colour index previously defined to separate stars and QSOs, to locate more of these unusual galaxies, to fainter limits. They are found in significant numbers in two different regions of the related colour-magnitude plot. Within these regions, we use the ensemble 7-colour photometry to estimate the populations of blue star-forming galaxies at redshift near 0.4, and a…
Lyman break analogues (LBAs) are a population of star-forming galaxies at low redshift (z ~ 0.2) selected in the ultraviolet (UV). These objects present higher star formation rates and lower dust extinction than other galaxies with similar masses and luminosities in the local universe. In this work we present results from a survey with the Combined Array for Research in Millimetre-wave Astronomy (CARMA) to detect CO(1-0) emission in LBAs, in order to analyse the properties of the molecular gas in these galaxies. Our results show that LBAs follow the same Schmidt-Kennicutt law as local galaxies…
We use new near-infrared spectroscopic observations to investigate the nature and evolution of the most luminous Hα(Ha) emitters at z~0.8-2.23, which evolve strongly in number density over this period, and compare them to more typical Ha emitters. We study 59 luminous Ha emitters with $L_{Hα}>L_{Hα}^*$, roughly equally split per redshift slice at z~0.8, 1.47 and 2.23 from the HiZELS and CF-HiZELS surveys. We find that, overall, 30$\pm$8% are AGN (80$\pm$30% of these AGN are broad-line AGN, BL-AGN), and we find little to no evolution in the AGN fraction with redshift, within the errors. However…
We constrain the luminosity and redshift dependence of the intrinsic alignment (IA) of a nearly volume-limited sample of luminous red galaxies selected from the fourth public data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000). To measure the shapes of the galaxies, we used two complementary algorithms, finding consistent IA measurements for the overlapping galaxy sample. The global significance of IA detection across our two independent luminous red galaxy samples, with our favoured method of shape estimation, is $\sim10.7σ$. We find no significant dependence with redshift of the IA signal in …
We present $HST$ narrow-band near-infrared imaging of Pa$α$ and Pa$β$ emission of 48 local Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) from the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). These data allow us to measure the properties of 810 spatially resolved star-forming regions (59 nuclei and 751 extra-nuclear clumps), and directly compare their properties to those found in both local and high-redshift star-forming galaxies. We find that in LIRGs, the star-forming clumps have radii ranging from $\sim90-900$ pc and star formation rates (SFRs) of $\sim1\times10^{-3}$ to 10 M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$, with…
We present the first results of a high-resolution Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) imaging survey of luminous and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) in the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). From the full sample of 68 galaxies, we have selected 25 LIRGs that show resolved extended emission at sufficient sensitivity to image individual regions of star-formation activity beyond the nucleus.~With wideband radio continuum observations, which sample the frequency range from $3-33$ GHz, we have made extinction-free measurements of the luminosities and spectral indicies for…
Using an AKARI multi-wavelength mid-infrared (IR) survey, we identify luminous starburst galaxies at z> 0.5 based on the PAH luminosity, and investigate the nature of these PAH-selected starbursts. An extragalactic survey with AKARI towards the north ecliptic pole (NEP), the NEP-Deep survey, is unique in terms of a comprehensive wavelength coverage from 2 to 24um using all 9 photometric bands of the InfraRed Camera (IRC). This survey allows us to photometrically identify galaxies whose mid-IR emission is clearly dominated by PAHs. We propose a single colour selection method to identify such ga…
We report the detection of a heavily obscured Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) in the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) NGC 6286, identified in a 17.5 ks NuSTAR observation. The source is in an early merging stage, and was targeted as part of our ongoing NuSTAR campaign observing local luminous and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies in different merger stages. NGC 6286 is clearly detected above 10 keV and, by including the quasi-simultaneous Swift/XRT and archival XMM-Newton and Chandra data, we find that the source is heavily obscured [$N_{\rm\,H}\simeq (0.95-1.32)\times 10^{24}\rm\,cm^{-2}$], with …
We present spectroscopic identification of 32 new quasars and luminous galaxies discovered at 5.7 < z < 6.8. This is the second in a series of papers presenting the results of the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, which exploits the deep multi-band imaging data produced by the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey. The photometric candidates were selected by a Bayesian probabilistic algorithm, and then observed with spectrographs on the Gran Telescopio Canarias and the Subaru Telescope. Combined with the sample presented in the previous pa…
We present a spectroscopically complete sample of 147 infrared-color-selected AGN down to a 22 $μ$m flux limit of 20 mJy over the $\sim$270 deg$^2$ of the SDSS Stripe 82 region. Most of these sources are in the QSO luminosity regime ($L_{\rm bol} \gtrsim 10^{12} L_\odot$) and are found out to $z\simeq3$. We classify the AGN into three types, finding: 57 blue, unobscured Type-1 (broad-lined) sources; 69 obscured, Type-2 (narrow-lined) sources; and 21 moderately-reddened Type-1 sources (broad-lined and $E(B-V) > 0.25$). We study a subset of this sample in X-rays and analyze their obscuration to …
We report molecular line and dust continuum observations, made with the SEST telescope, towards four young high-mass star forming regions associated with highly luminous (L> 6x10^5 Lsun) IRAS sources (15290-5546, 15502-5302, 15567-5236 and 16060-5146). Molecular emission was mapped in lines of CS (J=2-1, 3-2 and 5-4), SiO (J=2-1 and 3-2), CH3OH (Jk=3k-2k and 2k-1k), and C34S (J=3-2). In addition, single spectra at the peak position were taken in the CO, 13CO and C18O (J=1-0) lines. We find that the luminous star forming regions are associated with molecular gas and dust structures with radii o…
We present a new, detailed analysis of the morphologies and molecular gas fractions for a complete sample of 65 local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) from the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) using high resolution $I$-band images from The Hubble Space Telescope, the University of Hawaii 2.2m Telescope and the Pan-STARRS1 Survey. Our classification scheme includes single undisturbed galaxies, minor mergers, and major mergers, with the latter divided into five distinct stages from pre-first pericenter passage to final nuclear coalescence. We find that major mergers of molecular…
Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies (LCBGs) are compact, star-forming galaxies that are rarely observed in the local universe but abundant at z=1. This increase in LCBG number density over cosmic lookback time roughly follows the increase in the star formation rate density of the universe over the same period. We use publicly available data in the COSMOS field to study the evolution of the largest homogeneous sample of LCBGs to date by deriving their luminosity function in four redshift bins over the range $0.1\leq~z\leq1$. We find that over this redshift range, the characteristic luminosity (M$^{*…
We have observed the nucleus of the nearby luminous infrared galaxy NGC 4418 with subarcsec resolution at 860 and 450 micron for the first time to characterize its hidden power source. A ~20 pc (0.1") hot dusty core was found inside a 100 pc scale concentration of molecular gas at the galactic center. The 860 micron continuum core has a deconvolved (peak) brightness temperature of 120-210 K. The CO(3-2) peak brightness temperature there is as high as 90 K at 50 pc resolution. The core has a bolometric luminosity of about 10^{11} Lsun, which accounts for most of the galaxy luminosity. It is Com…
Despite advances in observational data, theoretical models, and computational techniques to simulate key physical processes in the formation and evolution of galaxies, the stellar mass assembly of galaxies still remains an unsolved problem today. Optical spectroscopic measurements appear to show that the gas-phase metallicities of local ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) are significantly lower than those of normal star-forming galaxies. This difference has resulted in the claim that ULIRGs are fueled by metal-poor gas accretion from the outskirts\cite{Mannucci10}. Here we report on a n…
Until recently, only a handful of dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) were known at $z>4$, most of them significantly amplified by gravitational lensing. Here, we have increased the number of such DSFGs substantially, selecting galaxies from the uniquely wide 250-, 350- and 500-$μ$m Herschel-ATLAS imaging survey on the basis of their extremely red far-infrared colors and faint 350- and 500-$μ$m flux densities - ergo they are expected to be largely unlensed, luminous, rare and very distant. The addition of ground-based continuum photometry at longer wavelengths from the JCMT and APEX allows us…
We report the first results from a spectroscopic survey of the [CII] 158um line from a sample of intermediate redshift (0.2<z<0.8) (ultra)-luminous infrared galaxies, (U)LIRGs (LIR>10^11.5 Lsun), using the SPIRE-Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) on board the Herschel Space Observatory. This is the first survey of [CII] emission, an important tracer of star-formation, at a redshift range where the star-formation rate density of the Universe increases rapidly. We detect strong [CII] 158um line emission from over 80% of the sample. We find that the [CII] line is luminous, in the range (0.8-4)x…
We infer the normalization and the radial and angular distributions of the number density of satellites of massive galaxies ($\log_{10}[M_{h}^*/M\odot]>10.5$) between redshifts 0.1 and 0.8 as a function of host stellar mass, redshift, morphology and satellite luminosity. Exploiting the depth and resolution of the COSMOS HST images, we detect satellites up to eight magnitudes fainter than the host galaxies and as close as 0.3 (1.4) arcseconds (kpc). Describing the number density profile of satellite galaxies to be a projected power law such that $P(R)\propto R^{\rpower}$, we find $\rpower=-1.1\…
We detect and study the properties of faint radio AGN in Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs). The LRG sample comprises 760,000 objects from a catalog of LRG photometric redshifts constructed from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) imaging data, and 65,000 LRGs from the SDSS spectroscopic sample. These galaxies have typical 1.4 GHz flux densities in the 10s-100s of microJy, with the contribution from a low-luminosity AGN dominating any contribution from star formation. To probe the radio properties of such faint objects, we employ a stacking technique whereby FIRST survey image cutouts at each optica…
We present sensitive NIR (J, H and K) imaging observations toward four luminous massive star forming regions in the Norma Spiral Arm: G324.201+0.119, G328.307+0.432, G329.337+0.147 and G330.949-0.174. We identify three clusters of young stellar objects (YSO) based on surface density diagnostics. We also find that sources detected only in the H and K-bands and with colors corresponding to spectral types earlier than B2, are likely YSOs. We analyze the spatial distribution of stars of different masses and find signatures in two clusters of primordial mass segregation which can't be explained as …
Distant luminous quasars provide important information on the growth of the first supermassive black holes, their host galaxies and the epoch of reionization. The identification of quasars is usually performed through detection of their Lyman-$α$ line redshifted to $\sim$ 0.9 microns at z>6.5. Here, we report the discovery of a very Lyman-$α$ luminous quasar, PSO J006.1240+39.2219 at redshift z=6.618, selected based on its red colour and multi-epoch detection of the Lyman-$α$ emission in a single near-infrared band. The Lyman-$α$-line luminosity of PSO J006.1240+39.2219 is unusually high and e…
We present a statistical study of the luminosity functions of galaxies surrounding luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at average redshifts <z>=0.34 and <z>=0.65. The luminosity functions are derived by extracting source photometry around more than 40,000 LRGs and subtracting foreground and background contamination using randomly selected control fields. We show that at both studied redshifts the average luminosity functions of the LRGs and their satellite galaxies are poorly fitted by a Schechter function due to a luminosity gap between the centrals and their most luminous satellites. We utilize a t…
We report the discovery of BOSS-EUVLG1 at z=2.469, by far the most luminous, almost un-obscured star-forming galaxy known at any redshift. First classified as a QSO within the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, follow-up observations with the Gran Telescopio Canarias reveal that its large luminosity, MUV = -24.40 and log(L_Lya/erg s-1) = 44.0, is due to an intense burst of star-formation, and not to an AGN or gravitational lensing. BOSS-EUVLG1 is a compact (reff = 1.2 kpc), young (4-5 Myr) starburst with a stellar mass log(M*/Msun) = 10.0 +/- 0.1 and a prodigious star formation rate of ~…
We present 1.3- and/or 3-mm continuum images and 3-mm spectral scans, obtained using NOEMA and ALMA, of 21 distant, dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). Our sample is a subset of the galaxies selected by Ivison et al. (2016) on the basis of their extremely red far-infrared (far-IR) colours and low {\it Herschel} flux densities; most are thus expected to be unlensed, extraordinarily luminous starbursts at $z \gtrsim 4$, modulo the considerable cross-section to gravitational lensing implied by their redshift. We observed 17 of these galaxies with NOEMA and four with ALMA, scanning through the 3…
We present the identification and characterization of the optical counterpart to 2XMM J011942.7+032421, one of the most luminous and distant ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs). The counterpart is located near a star forming region in a spiral arm of the galaxy NGC 470 with u, g, and r magnitudes of 21.53, 21.69, and 21.71 mags, respectively. The luminosity of the counterpart is much larger than that of a single O-type star, indicating that it may be a stellar cluster. Our optical spectroscopic observations confirm the association of the X-ray source and the optical counterpart with its host g…
Ring galaxies are fascinating laboratories: a catastrophic impact between two galaxies (one not much smaller than the other) has produced fireworks especially in the larger one, when hit roughly perpendicularly to the plane. We analyze the point sources, produced by the starburst episode following the impact, in the rings of seven galaxies and determine their X-ray luminosity function (XLF). In total we detect 63 sources, of which 50 have luminosity L$_X \geq 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, classifying them as ultra luminous X-ray sources (ULXs). We find that the total XLF is not significantly differen…
We report the results of a search for large velocity width, low-intensity line wings - a commonly used signature of molecular outflows - in four low redshift (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) that appear to be dominated by star formation. The targets were drawn from a sample of fourteen such galaxies presented in Chung et al. (2011), who showed the stacked CO spectrum of the sample to exhibit 1000 km/s-wide line wings. We obtained sensitive, wide bandwidth imaging of our targets using the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer. We detect each target at very high significance but do not …
The clustering of active galactic nuclei (AGN) sheds light on their typical large (Mpc-scale) environments, which can constrain the growth and evolution of supermassive black holes. Here we measure the clustering of luminous X-ray-selected AGN in the Stripe 82X and XMM-XXL-North surveys around the peak epoch of black hole growth, in order to investigate the dependence of luminosity on large-scale AGN environment. We compute the auto-correlation function of AGN in two luminosity bins, $10^{43}\leq L_X<10^{44.5}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at $z\sim 0.8$ and $L_X\geq 10^{44.5}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at $z\sim 1.8$, an…
From near-infrared spectroscopic measurements of the MgII emission line doublet, we estimate the black hole (BH) mass of the quasar, SMSS J215728.21-360215.1, as being (3.4 +/- 0.6) x 10^10 M_sun and refine the redshift of the quasar to be z=4.692. SMSS J2157 is the most luminous known quasar, with a 3000A luminosity of (4.7 +/- 0.5) x 10^47 erg/s and an estimated bolometric luminosity of 1.6 x 10^48 erg/s, yet its Eddington ratio is only ~0.4. Thus, the high luminosity of this quasar is a consequence of its extremely large BH -- one of the most massive BHs at z > 4.
We investigate the stellar masses of the class of star-forming objects known as Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies (LCBGs) by studying a sample of galaxies in the distant cluster MS$~$0451.6-0305 at $z\approx0.54$ with ground-based multicolor imaging and spectroscopy. For a sample of 16 spectroscopically-confirmed cluster LCBGs (colour $B-V < 0.5$, surface brightness $μ_B < 21$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$, and magnitude $M_B < -18.5$), we measure stellar masses by fitting spectral energy distribution (SED) models to multiband photometry, and compare with dynamical masses (determined from velocity dispersion…
This is the second paper in a series on a new luminous z ~ 5 quasar survey using optical and near-infrared colors. Here we present a new determination of the bright end of the quasar luminosity function (QLF) at z ~ 5. Combined our 45 new quasars with previously known quasars that satisfy our selections, we construct the largest uniform luminous z ~ 5 quasar sample to date, with 99 quasars in the range 4.7 <= z < 5.4 and -29 < M1450 <= -26.8, within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) footprint. We use a modified 1/Va method including flux limit correction to derive a binned QLF, and we model …
We present properties of two types of bulges (classical- and pseudo- bulges) in 20 luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) observed in the near infrared of the $H$, $K_s$ and 1.91$μ$m narrow-band targeting at the hydrogen Pa$α$ emission line by the University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory (TAO) 1.0 m telescope. To classify the two types of bulges, we first perform a two-dimensional bulge-disk decomposition analysis in the $K_\mathrm{s}$-band images. The result shows a tentative bimodal distribution of Sérsic indices with a separation at $\log(n_b)\sim0.5$, which is consistent with that of classical …
The Seoul National University AGN Monitoring Project III: H$β$ lag measurements of 32 luminous AGNs and the high-luminosity end of the size--luminosity relation
So far the masses of about 50 active galactic nuclei have been measured through the reverberation mapping technique (RM). Most measurements have been performed for objects of moderate luminosity and redshift, based on H$β$, which is also used to calibrate the scaling relation which allows single-epoch (SE) mass determination based on AGN luminosity and the width of different emission lines. The SE mass obtained from CIV$(1549 {\rmÅ})$ line shows a large spread around mean values, due to complex structure and gas dynamics of the relevant emission region. Direct RM measures of CIV exist for only…
This paper presents the result of $Hα$ imaging for luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). \textbf{It is } a \textbf{complete subsample of Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survery (GOALS) with $Dec. \ge -30^{\circ}$}, \textbf{and} consists 148 galaxies with $log(L_{IR}/L_{\odot}) \ge 11.0$. All the $Hα$ images were carried out using the 2.16-m telescope \textbf{at the Xinglong Station of the} National Astronomy Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences\textbf{ (NAOC),} during the year from 2006 to 2009. We obtained pure $Hα$ luminosity for each galaxy…
An evolution of luminosity of galaxies in emission lines or wavelength ranges in which they are sensitive to the star formation process is caused by burning out of the most massive O-class stars during a few million years after a starburst. We study the impact of this effect on the luminosity function (LF) of a sample of star-forming galaxies. We introduce several types of LFs: an initial LF after a starburst, current, time-averaged and sample ones. We find the relations between them in general and specify them in the case of the luminosity evolution law proposed for the luminous compact galax…
We report discovery of 41 new high-z quasars and luminous galaxies, which were spectroscopically identified at 5.7 < z < 6.9. This is the fourth in a series of papers from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, based on the deep multi-band imaging data collected by the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey. We selected the photometric candidates by a Bayesian probabilistic algorithm, and then carried out follow-up spectroscopy with the Gran Telescopio Canarias and the Subaru Telescope. Combined with the sample presented in the previous pape…
We present the results of a survey of CO(1-0) emission in 14 infrared luminous dusty star forming galaxies (DSFGs) at 2 < z < 4 with the NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. All sources are detected in CO(1-0), with an ~1arcsec angular resolution. Seven sources show extended and complex structure. We measure CO luminosities of $(μ)L'_{CO(1-0)}=0.4-2.9x10^{11}$ K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^2$, and molecular gas masses of ($μ$)M$_{H2}$ = 1.3 - 8.6 x 10$^{11}$ Mo, where (μ) is the magnification factor. The derived molecular gas depletion times of t$_{\rm dep}$ = 40 - 460 Myr, cover the expected range of b…
We present the first study of GALEX far ultra-violet (FUV) luminosity functions of individual star-forming regions within a sample of 258 nearby galaxies spanning a large range in total stellar mass and star formation properties. We identify ~65,000 star-forming regions (i.e., FUV sources), measure each galaxy's luminosity function, and characterize the relationships between the luminosity function slope (alpha) and several global galaxy properties. A final sample of 82 galaxies with reliable luminosity functions are used to define these relationships and represent the largest sample of galaxi…
We present the results of Spitzer IRS infrared 5-35 micron low-resolution spectroscopic energy diagnostics of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z > 0.15, classified optically as non-Seyferts. Based on the equivalent widths of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission and the optical depths of silicate dust absorption features, we searched for signatures of intrinsically luminous, but optically elusive, buried AGNs in these optically non-Seyfert ULIRGs. We then combined the results with those of non-Seyfert ULIRGs at z < 0.15 and non-Seyfert galaxies with infrared luminosities L(IR) < …
Using the six years of the spectroscopic monitoring of the luminous quasar HE 0435-4312 ($z=1.2231$) with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), in combination with the photometric data (CATALINA, OGLE, SALTICAM, and BMT), we determined the rest-frame time-delay of $296^{+13}_{-14}$ days between the MgII broad-line emission and the ionizing continuum using seven different time-delay inference methods. Artefact time-delay peaks and aliases were mitigated using the bootstrap method, prior weighting probability function as well as by analyzing unevenly sampled mock light curves. The MgII em…
We present the results of a stacking analysis performed on Spitzer/Infrared Spectrograph high-resolution mid-infrared spectra of luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) in the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). By binning on mid-infrared active galactic nucleus (AGN) fraction and stacking spectra, we detect bright emission lines [Ne II] and [Ne III], which trace star formation, and fainter emission lines [Ne V] and [O IV], which trace AGN activity, throughout the sample. We find the [Ne II] luminosity is fairly constant across all AGN fraction bins, while the [O IV] and [Ne V] luminos…
We analyze Chandra X-ray observatory data for a sample of 63 luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), sampling the lower-infrared luminosity range of the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG survey (GOALS), which includes the most luminous infrared selected galaxies in the local universe. X-rays are detected for 84 individual galaxies within the 63 systems, for which arcsecond resolution X-ray images, fluxes, infrared and X-ray luminosities, spectra and radial profiles are presented. Using X-ray and MIR selection criteria, we find AGN in (31$\pm$5)% of the galaxy sample, compared to the (38$\pm$6)% pre…
Utilizing low-luminosity star-forming systems discovered in the H$α$ Dots survey, we present spectroscopic observations undertaken using the KPNO 4m telescope for twenty-six sources. With determinations of robust, "direct"-method metal abundances, we examine the properties of these dwarf systems, exploring their utility in characterizing starburst galaxies at low luminosities and stellar masses. We find that the H$α$ Dots survey provides an effective new avenue for identifying star-forming galaxies in these regimes. In addition, we examine abundance characteristics and metallicity scaling rela…
We study the kinematic properties of the ambient ionized ISM and ionized gas outflows in a large and representative sample of local luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) (58 systems, 75 galaxies), on the basis of integral field spectroscopy (IFS)-based high S/N integrated spectra at galactic and sub-galactic, i.e. star forming (SF) clumps, scales. Ambient ionized gas. The velocity dispersion of the ionized ISM in U/LIRGs (<sigma> ~ 70 kms-1) is larger than in lower luminosity local star forming galaxies (<sigma> ~ 25 kms-1). While for isolated disc LIRGs star formation appears…
This paper compares the optical spectra of a wide range of galaxies categorised as members of the Low Ionisation Nuclear Emission Region (LINER) class of active galactic nuclei (AGN). LINERs are defined by emission spectra with relatively faint high ionisation lines (compared to other AGN classes). The gas emission luminosity ranges from the weak flux emanating from some nearby galactic nuclei all the way to extremely luminous radio galaxies, where the line emission can completely dominate the host galaxy starlight component. In this study I analyse the Sloane Digital Sky Survey optical spectr…
We have tested some relations for star formation rates used in extra-galactic studies for regions within the Galaxy. In nearby molecular clouds, where the IMF is not fully-sampled, the dust emission at 24 micron greatly underestimates star formation rates (by a factor of 100 on average) when compared to star formation rates determined from counting YSOs. The total infrared emission does no better. In contrast, the total far-infrared method agrees within a factor of 2 on average with star formation rates based on radio continuum emission for massive, dense clumps that are forming enough massive…
We examine the redshift evolution of standard strong emission-line diagnostics for Hbeta-selected star-forming galaxies using the local SDSS sample and a new z = 0.2 - 2.3 sample obtained from HST WFC3 grism and Keck DEIMOS and MOSFIRE data. We use the SDSS galaxies to show that there is a systematic dependence of the strong emission-line properties on Balmer-line luminosity, which we interpret as showing that both the N/O abundance and the ionization parameter increase with increasing line luminosity. Allowing for the luminosity dependence tightens the diagnostic diagrams and the metallicity …
We have designed the Extremely Luminous Quasar Survey (ELQS) to provide a highly complete census of unobscured UV-bright quasars during the cosmic noon, $z=2.8-5.0$. Here we report the discovery of 70 new quasars in the ELQS South Galactic Cap (ELQS-S) quasar sample, doubling the number of known extremely luminous quasars in $4,237.3\,\rm{deg}^2$ of the SDSS footprint. These observations conclude the ELQS and we present the properties of the full ELQS quasar catalog, containing 407 quasars over $11,838.5\,\rm{deg}^2$. Our novel ELQS quasar selection strategy resulted in unprecedented completen…
We report the discovery of 28 quasars and 7 luminous galaxies at 5.7 $\le$ z $\le$ 7.0. This is the tenth in a series of papers from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, which exploits the deep multi-band imaging data produced by the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey. The total number of spectroscopically identified objects in SHELLQs has now grown to 93 high-z quasars, 31 high-z luminous galaxies, 16 [O III] emitters at z ~ 0.8, and 65 Galactic cool dwarfs (low-mass stars and brown dwarfs). These objects were found over 900 deg2, sur…
We present a comparative multi-wavelength analysis of water maser-emitting regions and non-maser-emitting luminous 24 micron star-forming regions in the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) to identify the sites most likely to produce luminous water masers useful for astrometry and proper motion studies. Included in the analysis are Spitzer 24 micron photometry, Herschel 70 and 160 micron photometry, H$α$ emission, dust temperature, and star formation rate. We find significant differences between the maser-emitting and non-maser-emitting regions: water maser-emitting regions tend to be more IR-luminous and …
We report the detection of CO(1 - 0) line emission from seven Planck and Herschel selected hyper luminous (LIR(8-1000um) > 10^13Lsun) infrared galaxies with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). CO(1 - 0) measurements are a vital tool to trace the bulk molecular gas mass across all redshifts. Our results place tight constraints on the total gas content of these most apparently luminous high-z star-forming galaxies (apparent IR luminosities of LIR > 10^(13-14) Lsun), while we confirm their predetermined redshifts measured using the Large Millimeter Telescope, LMT (zCO = 1.33 - 3.26). The CO(1 - 0) li…
We report herschel observations of 100 very luminous, optically selected AGNs at z=2-3.5 with log(LUV)(erg/sec)> 46.5, where LUV=L1350A. The distribution in LUV is similar to the general distribution of SDSS AGNs in this redshift and luminosity interval. We measured SF luminosity, LSF, and SFR in 34 detected sources by fitting combined SF and WISE-based torus templates. We also obtained statistically significant stacks for the undetected sources in two luminosity groups. The sample properties are compared with those of very luminous AGNs at z>4.5. The main findings are: 1) The mean and the med…

The massive and luminous star-forming region W49A is a well known Galactic candidate to probe the physical conditions and chemistry similar to those expected in external starburst galaxies. We aim to probe the physical and chemical structure of W49A on a spatial scale of ~0.8 pc based on the JCMT Spectral Legacy Survey, which covers the frequency range between 330 and 373 GHz. The wide 2x2 arcminutes field and the high spectral resolution of the HARP instrument on JCMT provides information on the spatial structure and kinematics of the cloud. For species where multiple transitions are availabl…
We have observed three luminous infrared galaxy systems (LIRGS) which are pairs of interacting galaxies, with the Galaxy H$α$ Fabry-Perot system (GH$α$FaS) mounted on the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, and combined the observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of these systems in CO emission to compare the physical properties of the star formation regions and the molecular gas clouds, and specifically the internal kinematics of the star forming regions. We identified 88 star forming regions in the H$α$ emission data-cub…
In order to better understand the nature of post-starburst quasars (PSQs) in the context of galaxy evolution, we compare their properties to those of post-starburst galaxies and quasars from appropriately selected samples possessing similar redshift ($z \sim 0.3$), luminosity ($M_r \sim -$23), and data quality. We consider morphologies, spectral features, and derived physical properties of the stellar populations and central supermassive black hole. PSQs themselves come in two types: the more luminous AGNs with more luminous post-starburst stellar populations hosted by elliptical galaxies, som…
Several recent studies have reported different intrinsic correlations between the AGN mid-IR luminosity ($L_{MIR}$) and the rest-frame 2-10 keV luminosity ($L_{X}$) for luminous quasars. To understand the origin of the difference in the observed $L_{X}-L_{MIR}$ relations, we study a sample of 3,247 spectroscopically confirmed type 1 AGNs collected from Boötes, XMM-COSMOS, XMM-XXL-North, and the SDSS quasars in the Swift/XRT footprint spanning over four orders of magnitude in luminosity. We carefully examine how different observational constraints impact the observed $L_{X}-L_{MIR}$ relations, …
We present star formation rates based on cold and ionized gas measurements of Mrk 266 (NGC 5256), a system composed of two colliding gas-rich galaxies, each hosting an active galactic nucleus. Using $^{12}$CO (1-0) observations with the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-Wave Astronomy (CARMA), we find a total H$_2$ mass in the central region of $1.1\pm0.3\times10^{10}$ $M_\odot$ which leads to a possible future star formation rate of $25\pm10 M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. With the Fourier Transform Spectrograph (SITELLE) on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, we measure an integrated H$α$ lumino…
We use optical and near-infrared spectroscopy to observe rest-UV emission lines and estimate the black hole mass of WISEA J224607.56-052634.9 (W2246-0526) at z = 4.601, the most luminous hot dust-obscured galaxy yet discovered by WISE. From the broad component of the MgII-2799A emission line, we measure a black hole mass of log (M_BH/M_sun) = 9.6 +- 0.4. The broad CIV-1549A line is asymmetric and significantly blue-shifted. The derived M_BH from the blueshift-corrected broad CIV line width agrees with the MgII result. From direct measurement using a well-sampled SED, the bolometric luminosity …
