A new recursion in only one variable allows very simple verifications of Bressoud's polynomial identities, which lead to the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. This approach might be compared with an earlier approach due to Chapman. Applying the $q$-Chu-Vandermonde convolution, as suggested by Cigler, makes the computations particularly simple and elementary. The same treatment is also applied to the Santos polynomials and perhaps more polynomials from a list of Rogers-Ramanujan like polynomials \cite{Sills}.
As an application of the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz, we give a short polynomial proof of the q-analogue of Dyson's conjecture formulated by Andrews and first proved by Zeilberger and Bressoud.
In 1984, Bressoud and Subbarao obtained an interesting weighted partition identity for a generalized divisor function, by means of combinatorial arguments. Recently, the last three named authors found an analytic proof of the aforementioned identity of Bressoud and Subbarao starting from a $q$-series identity of Ramanujan. In the present paper, we revisit the combinatorial arguments of Bressoud and Subbarao, and derive a more general weighted partition identity. Furthermore, with the help of a fractional differential operator, we establish a few more Bressoud-Subbarao type weighted partition i…
We present what we call a "motivated proof" of the Andrews-Bressoud partition identities for even moduli. A "motivated proof" of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities was given by G. E. Andrews and R. J. Baxter, and this proof was generalized to the odd-moduli case of Gordon's identities by J. Lepowsky and M. Zhu. Recently, a "motivated proof" of the somewhat analogous Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities has been found. In the present work, we introduce "shelves" of formal series incorporating what we call "ghost series," which allow us to pass from one shelf to the next via natural recursions, leadi…
In this note we study a certain graph polynomial arising from a special recursion. This recursion is a member of a family of four recursions where the other three recursions belong to the chromatic polynomial, the modified matching polynomial, and the adjoint polynomial, respectively. The four polynomials share many common properties, for instance all of them are of exponential type, i. e., they satisfy the identity $$\sum_{S\subseteq V(G)}f(G[S],x)f(G[V\setminus S],y)=f(G,x+y)$$ for every graph $G$. It turns out that the new graph polynomial is a specialization of the Tutte polynomial.
Mitosis is a rule introduced by [Knutson-Miller, 2002] for manipulating subsets of the n by n grid. It provides an algorithm that lists the reduced pipe dreams (also known as rc-graphs) [Fomin-Kirillov, Bergeron-Billey] for a permutation w in S_n by downward induction on weak Bruhat order, thereby generating the coefficients of Schubert polynomials [Lascoux-Schutzenberger] inductively. This note provides a short and purely combinatorial proof of these properties of mitosis.
We give a recursion for the multivariate Rogers-Szegö polynomials, along with another recursive functional equation, and apply them to compute special values. We also consider the sum of all $q$-multinomial coefficients of some fixed degree and length, and give a recursion for this sum which follows from the recursion of the multivariate Rogers-Szegö polynomials, and generalizes the recursion for the Galois numbers. The sum of all $q$-multinomial coefficients of degree $n$ and length $m$ is the number of flags of length $m-1$ of subspaces of an $n$-dimensional vector space over a field with $q…
We establish a set of recursion relations for the coefficients in the chromatic polynomial of a graph or a hypergraph. As an application we provide a generalization of Whitney's broken cycle theorem for hypergraphs, as well as deriving an explicit formula for the linear coefficient of the chromatic polynomial of the $r$-complete hypergraph in terms of roots of the Taylor polynomials for the exponential function.
In 1982 Macdonald published his now famous constant term conjectures for classical root systems. This paper begins with the almost trivial observation that Macdonald's constant term identities admit an extra set of free parameters, thereby linking them to Poincare polynomials. We then exploit these extra degrees of freedom in the case of type A to give the first proof of Kadell's orthogonality conjecture---a symmetric function generalisation of the q-Dyson conjecture or Zeilberger-Bressoud theorem. Key ingredients in our proof of Kadell's orthogonality conjecture are the polynomial lemma of Ka…
The Ramanujan polynomials were introduced by Ramanujan in his study of power series inversions. In an approach to the Cayley formula on the number of trees, Shor discovers a refined recurrence relation in terms of the number of improper edges, without realizing the connection to the Ramanujan polynomials. On the other hand, Dumont and Ramamonjisoa independently take the grammatical approach to a sequence associated with the Ramanujan polynomials and have reached the same conclusion as Shor's. It was a coincidence for Zeng to realize that the Shor polynomials turn out to be the Ramanujan polyno…
Firstly, for a general graph, we find a recursion formula on the number of Hamiltonian cycles and one on cycles. By this result, we give some new polynomial invariants. Secondly, we give a condition to tell whether a polynomial defined by recursion on edges is a invariant. Then, we give an generaliztion of the Tutte polynomial. Finally, We have a try on distinguishing different graphs by using these polynomials.
We introduce the Z-polynomial of a matroid, which we define in terms of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial. We then exploit a symmetry of the Z-polynomial to derive a new recursion for Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficients. We solve this recursion, obtaining a closed formula for Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficients as alternating sums of multi-indexed Whitney numbers. For realizable matroids, we give a cohomological interpretation of the Z-polynomial in which the symmetry is a manifestation of Poincare duality.
We employ general parabolic recursion methods to demonstrate the recently devised hypercube formula for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $S_n$, and establish its generalization to the full setting of a finite Coxeter system through algebraic proof. We introduce procedures for positive decompositions of $q$-derived Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials within this setting, that utilize classical Hecke algebra positivity phenomena of Dyer-Lehrer and Grojnowski-Haiman. This leads to a distinct algorithmic approach to the subject, based on induction from a parabolic subgroup. We propose suitable weak variants…
We establish a polynomial recursion formula for linear Hodge integrals. It is obtained as the Laplace transform of the cut-and-join equation for the simple Hurwitz numbers. We show that the recursion recovers the Witten-Kontsevich theorem when restricted to the top degree terms, and also the combinatorial factor of the lambda_g formula as the lowest degree terms.
Linear recursions of degree $k$ are determined by evaluating the sequence of Generalized Fibonacci Polynomials, $\{F_{k,n}(t_1,...,t_k)\}$ (isobaric reflects of the complete symmetric polynomials) at the integer vectors $(t_1,...,t_k)$. If $F_{k,n}(t_1,...,t_k) = f_n$, then $$f_n - \sum_{j=1}^k t_j f_{n-j} = 0,$$ and $\{f_n\}$ is a linear recursion of degree $k$. On the one hand, the periodic properties of such sequences modulo a prime $p$ are discussed, and are shown to be related to the prime structure of certain algebraic number fields; for example, the arithmetic properties of the period a…
Ramanujan defined the polynomials $ψ_{k}(r,x)$ in his study of power series inversion. Berndt, Evans and Wilson obtained a recurrence relation for $ψ_{k}(r,x)$. In a different context, Shor introduced the polynomials $Q(i,j,k)$ related to improper edges of a rooted tree, leading to a refinement of Cayley's formula. He also proved a recurrence relation and raised the question of finding a combinatorial proof. Zeng realized that the polynomials of Ramanujan coincide with the polynomials of Shor, and that the recurrence relation of Shor coincides with the recurrence relation of Berndt, Evans and …
Several new transformations for q-binomial coefficients are found, which have the special feature that the kernel is a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients. By studying the group-like properties of these positivity preserving transformations, as well as their connection with the Bailey lemma, many new summation and transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series are found. The new q-binomial transformations are also applied to obtain multisum Rogers--Ramanujan identities, to find new representations for the Rogers--Szego polynomials, and to make some progress on Bressoud's generali…
We show that the Poincare polynomial associated with the orbifold cell decomposition of the moduli space of smooth algebraic curves with distinct marked points satisfies a topological recursion formula of the Eynard-Orantin type. The recursion uniquely determines the Poincare polynomials from the initial data. Our key discovery is that the Poincare polynomial is the Laplace transform of the number of Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants.
The Lucas polynomials, $\{n\}$, are polynomials in $s$ and $t$ given by $\{ n \} = s \{ n-1 \} + t \{ n-2 \}$ for $n \geq 2$ with $ \{ 0 \} = 0$ and $\{ 1 \} = 1$. The lucanomial coefficients, an analogue of the binomial coefficients, are given by \[ \Bigl\{ \begin{array}{c} n\\k \end{array} \Bigr \} = \frac{ \{n\}! }{ \{k\}! \{n-k\}!}. \] When $s = t = 1$ then $\{ n \} = F_n$ and the lucanomial coefficient becomes the fibonomial coefficient \[ \binom{n}{k}_F = \frac{F_n!}{F_k! F_{n-k}!}. \] The well-known Narayana numbers, $N_{n,k}$ satisfy the equation \[ N_{n,k} = \frac{1}{n} \binom{n}{k} \…
We prove that topological recursion applied to the spectral curve of colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials of torus knots reproduces the n-point functions of a particular partition function called the extended Ooguri-Vafa partition function. This generalizes and refines the results of Brini-Eynard-Marino and Borot-Eynard-Orantin. We also discuss how the statement of spectral curve topological recursion in this case fits into the program of Alexandrov-Chapuy-Eynard-Harnad of establishing the topological recursion for general weighted double Hurwitz numbers partition functions (a.k.a. KP tau-functions o…
In this paper, we begin with the Lehman-Walsh formula counting one-face maps and construct two involutions on pairs of permutations to obtain a new formula for the number $A(n,g)$ of one-face maps of genus $g$. Our new formula is in the form of a convolution of the Stirling numbers of the first kind which immediately implies a formula for the generating function $A_n(x)=\sum_{g\geq 0}A(n,g)x^{n+1-2g}$ other than the well-known Harer-Zagier formula. By reformulating our expression for $A_n(x)$ in terms of the backward shift operator $E: f(x)\rightarrow f(x-1)$ and proving a property satisfied b…
The alternating descent statistic on permutations was introduced by Chebikin as a variant of the descent statistic. We show that the alternating descent polynomials on permutations are unimodal via a five-term recurrence relation. We also found a quadratic recursion for the alternating major index $q$-analog of the alternating descent polynomials. As an interesting application of this quadratic recursion, we show that $(1+q)^{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$ divides $\sum_{π\in\mathfrak{S}_n}q^{\rm{altmaj}(π)}$, where $\mathfrak{S}_n$ is the set of all permutations of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ and $\rm{altmaj}(π…
The purpose of the paper is to introduce two new algorithms. The first one computes a linear recursion for proper hypergeometric multisums, by treating one summation variable at a time, and provides rational certificates along the way. A key part in the search of a linear recursion is an improved universal denominator algorithm that constructs all rational solutions $x(n)$ of the equation $$ \frac{a_m(n)}{b_m(n)}x(n+m)+...+\frac{a_0(n)}{b_0(n)}x(n)= c(n),$$ where $a_i(n), b_i(n), c(n)$ are polynomials. Our algorithm improves Abramov's universal denominator.
We present an explicit formula for the transition matrix $\mathcal{C}$ from the type $BC_n$ Koornwinder polynomials $P_{(1^r)}(x|a,b,c,d|q,t)$ with one column diagrams, to the type $BC_n$ monomial symmetric polynomials $m_{(1^{r})}(x)$. The entries of the matrix $\mathcal{C}$ enjoy a set of four terms recursion relations. These recursions provide us with the branching rules for the Koornwinder polynomials with one column diagrams, namely the restriction rules from $BC_n$ to $BC_{n-1}$. To have a good description of the transition matrices involved, we introduce the following degeneration schem…
We show that the only polynomial sets with a generating function of the form F (xt -- R(t)) and satisfying a three-term recursion relation are the monomial set and the rescaled ultraspherical, Hermite, and Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind.
Horizontal and vertical generating functions and recursion relations have been investigated by Comtet for triangular double sequences. In this paper we investigate the horizontal and vertical log-concavity of triangular sequences assigned to polynomials which show up in combinatorics, number theory and physics. This includes Laguerre polynomials, the Pochhammer polynomials, the D'Arcais and Nekrasov--Okounkov polynomials.
We study the correlators $W_{g,n}$ arising from Orlov-Scherbin 2-Toda tau functions with rational content-weight $G(z)$, at arbitrary values of the two sets of time parameters. Combinatorially, they correspond to generating functions of weighted Hurwitz numbers and $(m,r)$-factorisations of permutations. When the weight function is polynomial, they are generating functions of constellations on surfaces in which two full sets of degrees (black/white) are entirely controlled, and in which internal faces are allowed in addition to boundaries. We give the spectral curve (the "disk" function $W_{0,…
