Finite-dimensional, inviscid equations of hydrodynamics, such as the zero-viscosity, one-dimensional Burgers equation or the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equation, obtained through a Fourier-Galerkin projection, thermalise---mediated through structures known as tygers [Ray et al., Phys. Rev. E 84, 016301 (2011)]---with an energy equipartition. Therefore, numerical solutions of inviscid partial differential equations, which typically have to be Galerkin-truncated, show a behaviour at odds with the parent equation. We now propose, by using the one-dimensional Burgers equation as a testing ground, a novel numerical recipe, named tyger purging, to arrest the onset of thermalisation and hence recover the true dissipative solution.
The one-dimensional ($1D$) Galerkin-truncated Burgers equation, with both dissipation and noise terms included, is studied using spectral methods. When the truncation-scale Reynolds number $R_{\rm min}$ is varied, from very small values to order $1$ values, the scale-dependent correlation time $τ(k)$ is shown to follow the expected crossover from the short-distance $τ(k) \sim k^{-2}$ Edwards-Wilkinson scaling to the universal long-distance Kardar-Parisi-Zhang scaling $τ(k) \sim k^{-3/2}$. In the inviscid limit: $R_{\rm min}\to \infty$, we show that the system displays {\it another} crossover t…
We present theoretical and numerical results for the one-dimensional stochastically forced Burgers equation decimated on a fractal Fourier set of dimension $D$. We investigate the robustness of the energy transfer mechanism and of the small-scale statistical fluctuations by changing $D$. We find that a very small percentage of mode-reduction ($D \lesssim 1$) is enough to destroy most of the characteristics of the original non-decimated equation. In particular, we observe a suppression of intermittent fluctuations for $D <1$ and a quasi-singular transition from the fully intermittent ($D=1$) to…
We chart a singular landscape in the temporal domain of the inviscid Burgers equation in one space dimension for sine-wave initial conditions. These so far undetected complex singularities are arranged in an eye shape centered around the origin in time. Interestingly, since the eye is squashed along the imaginary time axis, complex-time singularities can become physically relevant at times well before the first real singularity -- the pre-shock. Indeed, employing a time-Taylor representation for the velocity around $t=0$, loss of convergence occurs roughly at 2/3 of the pre-shock time for the …
A special initial condition for (1+1)-dimensional Burgers equation is considered. It allows to obtain new analytical solutions for an arbitrary low viscosity as well as for the inviscid case. The viscous solution is written as a rational function provided the Reynolds number (a dimensionless value inversely proportional to the viscosity) is a multiple of two. The inviscid solution is expressed in radicals. Asymptotic expansion of the viscous solution at infinite Reynolds number is compared against the inviscid case. All solutions are finite, tend to zero at infinity and therefore are physicall…
In this paper, we study the inviscid limit of the Sabra shell model of turbulence, which is considered as a particular case of a viscous conservation law in one space dimension with a nonlocal quadratic flux function. We present a theoretical argument (with a detailed numerical confirmation) showing that a classical deterministic solution before a finite-time blowup, $t < t_b$, must be continued as a stochastic process after the blowup, $t > t_b$, representing a unique physically relevant description in the inviscid limit. This theory is based on the dynamical system formulation written for th…
The spectrally truncated, or finite dimensional, versions of several equations of inviscid flows display transient solutions which match their viscous counterparts, but which eventually lead to thermalized states in which energy is in equipartition between all modes. Recent advances in the study of the Burgers equation show that the thermalization process is triggered after the formation of sharp localized structures within the flow called "tygers". We show that the process of thermalization first takes place in well defined subdomains, before engulfing the whole space. Using spatio-temporal a…
Solutions to finite-dimensional (all spatial Fourier modes set to zero beyond a finite wavenumber $K_G$), inviscid equations of hydrodynamics at long times are known to be at variance with those obtained for the original infinite dimensional partial differential equations or their viscous counterparts. Surprisingly, the solutions to such Galerkin-truncated equations develop sharp localised structures, called {\it tygers} [Ray, et al., Phys. Rev. E {\bf 84}, 016301 (2011)], which eventually lead to completely thermalised states associated with an equipartition energy spectrum. We now obtain, by…
We carry out enhanced symmetry analysis of a two-dimensional Burgers system. The complete point symmetry group of this system is found using an enhanced version of the algebraic method. Lie reductions of the Burgers system are comprehensively studied in the optimal way and new Lie invariant solutions are constructed. We prove that this system admits no local conservation laws and then study hidden conservation laws, including potential ones. Various kinds of hidden symmetries (continuous, discrete and potential ones) are considered for this system as well. We exhaustively describe the solution…
The one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation is becoming an overarching paradigm for the scaling of nonequilibrium, spatially extended, classical and quantum systems with strong correlations. Recent analytical solutions have uncovered a rich structure regarding its scaling exponents and fluctuation statistics. However, the zero surface tension or zero viscosity case eludes such analytical solutions and has remained ill-understood. Using numerical simulations, we elucidate a well-defined universality class for this case that differs from that of the viscous case, featuring intrinsical…
An analog to the equations of compressible flow that is based on the inviscid Burgers equation is utilized to investigate the effect of spatial discreteness of energy release on the propagation of a detonation wave. While the traditional Chapman-Jouguet (CJ) treatment of a detonation wave assumes that the energy release of the medium is homogeneous through space, the system examined here consists of sources represented by $δ$-functions embedded in an otherwise inert medium. The sources are triggered by the passage of the leading shock wave following a delay that is either of fixed period or ra…
We study dynamical Galerkin schemes for evolutionary partial differential equations (PDEs), where the projection operator changes over time. When selecting a subset of basis functions, the projection operator is non-differentiable in time and an integral formulation has to be used. We analyze the projected equations with respect to existence and uniqueness of the solution and prove that non-smooth projection operators introduce dissipation, a result which is crucial for adaptive discretizations of PDEs, e.g., adaptive wavelet methods. For the Burgers equation we illustrate numerically that thr…
