Photon pair entangled in high dimensional orbital angular momentum (OAM) degree of freedom (DOF) has been widely regarded as a possible source in improving the capacity of quantum information processing. The need for the generation of a high dimensional maximally entangled state in the OAM DOF is therefore much desired. In this work, we demonstrate a simple method to generate a broader and flatter OAM spectrum, i.e. a larger spiral bandwidth (SB), of entangled photon pairs generated through spontaneous parametric down-conversion by modifying the pump beam profile. By investigating both experimentally and theoretically, we have found that an exponential pump profile that is roughly the inverse of the mode profiles of the single-mode fibers used for OAM detection will provide a much larger SB when compared to a Gaussian shaped pump.
Free-space quantum key distribution is gaining increasing interest as a leading platform for long range quantum communication. However, the sensitivity of quantum correlations to scattering induced by turbulent atmospheric links limits the performance of such systems. Recently, methods for compensating the scattering of entangled photons have been demonstrated, allowing for real-time optimization of their quantum correlations. In this Letter, we demonstrate the use of wavefront shaping for compensating the scattering of non-collinear and non-degenerate entangled photons. These results demonstr…
Quantum technologies hold great promise for revolutionizing photonic applications such as cryptography. Yet their implementation in real-world scenarios is held back, mostly due to sensitivity of quantum light to scattering. Recent developments in optimizing the shape of single photons introduce new ways to control quantum light. Nevertheless, shaping single photons in real-time remains a challenge due to the weak associated signals, which are too noisy for optimization processes. Here, we overcome this challenge and control scattering of entangled photons by shaping the classical laser beam t…
Scattering by atmospheric turbulence is one of the main challenges in creating long free-space optical links, and specifically links of entangled photons. Classical compensation methods are hard to apply to entangled photons, due to inherently low signal to noise ratios and the fragility of entanglement. We have recently shown that we can use the bright laser beam that pumps spontaneous parametric down conversion to control the spatial correlations between entangled photons for compensating their scattering. In this work, we apply the pump-shaping technique to compensate for scrambling of corr…
We experimentally demonstrate shaping of the two-photon wavefunction of entangled photon-pairs, utilizing coherent pulse-shaping techniques. By performing spectral-phase manipulations we tailor the two-photon wavefunction exactly like a coherent ultrashort pulse. To observe the shaping we perform sum-frequency generation (SFG) with an ultrahigh flux of entangled photons. At the appropriate conditions, SFG performs as a coincidence detector with an ultrashort response time (~100 fs), enabling a direct observation of the two-photon wavefunction. This property also enables us to demonstrate backg…
High-dimensional entanglement is a valuable resource for quantum communication, and photon pairs entangled in orbital angular momentum are commonly used for encoding high-dimensional quantum states. However, methods for preparation of maximally entangled states of arbitrary dimensionality are still lacking, and currently used approaches essentially rely on filtering and entanglement concentration. Here we experimentally realize a method for generation of high-dimensional maximally entangled OAM states of photon pairs which does not require any of these procedures. Moreover, the prepared state …
We demonstrate experimentally the tunable control of the joint spectrum, i.e. waveform and degree of frequency correlations, of paired photons generated in spontaneous parametric downconversion. This control is mediated by the spatial shape of the pump beam in a type-I noncollinear configuration. We discuss the applicability of this technique to other sources of frequency entangled photons, such as electromagnetically induced Raman transitions.
Quantum entanglement between qudits - the d-dimensional version of qubits - is relevant for advanced quantum information processing and provides deeper insights in the nature of quantum correlations. Encoding qudits in the frequency modes of photon pairs produced by continuous parametric down-conversion enables access to high-dimensional states. By shaping the energy spectrum of entangled photons, we demonstrate the creation, characterization and manipulation of entangled qudits with dimension up to 4. Their respective density matrices are reconstructed by quantum state tomography. For qubits …
Quantum entanglement is an integral part of quantum optics and has been exploited in areas such as computation, cryptography and metrology. The entanglement between photons can be present in various degrees of freedom (DOFs), and even the simplest bi-partite systems can occupy a large Hilbert space. Therefore, it is desirable to exploit this multi-dimensional space for various quantum applications by fully controlling the properties of the entangled photons in multiple DOFs. While current entangled-photon sources are capable of generating entanglement in one or more DOFs, there is currently a …
We present a detailed analysis of the multimode quantum state embedded in an optical frequency comb generated by a Synchronously Pumped Optical Parametric Oscillator (SPOPO). The full covariance matrix of the state is obtained with homodyne detection where the local oscillator is spectrally controlled with pulse shaping techniques. The resulting matrix reveals genuine multipartite entanglement. Additionally, the beam is comprised of several independent eigenmodes that correspond to specific pulse shapes. The experimental data is confirmed with numerical simulations. Finally, the potential to c…
Light shaping facilitates the preparation and detection of optical states and underlies many applications in communications, computing, and imaging. In this Letter, we generalize light shaping to the quantum domain. We show that patterns of phase modulation for classical laser light can also shape higher orders of spatial coherence, allowing deterministic tailoring of high-dimensional quantum entanglement. By modulating spatially entangled photon pairs, we create periodic, topological, and random patterns of quantum illumination, without effect on intensity. We then structure the quantum illum…
Uniaxial anisotropy in nonlinear birefringent crystals limits the efficiency of nonlinear optical interactions and breaks the spatial symmetry of light generated in the parametric down-conversion (PDC) process. Therefore, this effect is usually undesirable and must be compensated for. However, high gain may be used to overcome the destructive role of anisotropy and instead to use it for the generation of bright two-mode correlated twin-beams. In this work, we provide a rigorous theoretical description of the spatial properties of bright squeezed light in the presence of strong anisotropy. We i…
We propose a method to produce pure single photons with an arbitrary designed temporal shape in a heralded, lossless and scalable way. As the indispensable resource, the method uses pairs of time-energy entangled photons. To accomplish the shaping, one photon of a pair undergoes temporal modulation according to the desired shape. Subsequent frequency-resolving detection of the photon heralds its entangled counterpart in a pure quantum state with a temporal shape non-locally affected by the modulation. We found conditions for the shape of the heralded photon to reproduce the modulation function…
Preparation of entangled states of photons are useful for quantum computing and communication. In this paper, we present a simplistic protocol of entanglement generation using beam splitters with suitable reflectivity. The photons in an initial state with fully classical probability distribution pass through an optical network, made up of sequential beam splitters and are prepared in maximally entangled states. We also present the detailed theoretical analysis of entangled state generation, for an arbitrary number of photons, fed through the input ports of the beam splitters with equal probabi…
We demonstrate a method to generate entangled photons with controlled spatial shape by parametric down conversion (PDC) in a 2D nonlinear crystal. A compact and novel crystal source was designed and fabricated, generating directly path entangled photons without the use of additional beam-splitters. This crystal supports two PDC processes, emitting biphotons into two beamlike modes simultaneously. Two coherent path entangled amplitudes of biphotons were created and their interference observed. Our method enables the generation of entangled photons with controlled spatial, spectral and polarizat…
The ability to engineer the properties of quantum optical states is essential for quantum information processing applications. By shaping the spatial pump beam profile in a type-I collinear configuration, we tailor the spatial structure of coincidences between photon pairs entangled in high dimensions, without effect on intensity. The results highlight fundamental aspects of spatial coherence and hold potential for the development of quantum technologies based o…
Conditions to generate high-purity entangled vacuum-evacuated coherent states ($|0>|α>^0 - |-α>^0 |0>$ were studied for two cascade-placed beam splitters, with one squeezed state input and two coherent state inputs whenever a single photon is detected. Controlling the amplitudes and the phases of the beams allows for various amplitudes of the vacuum-evacuated coherent states ($|α>^ 0 = |α> -e^{-|α|^2} |0> $) up to $α= 2.160$ to be manipulated with high-purity.
Over the past decade, Airy beams have been the subject of extensive research, leading to new physical insights and various applications. In this letter, we extend the concept of Airy beams to the quantum domain. We generate entangled photons in a superposition of two-photon Airy states via spontaneous parametric down conversion, pumped by a classical Airy beam. We show that the entangled Airy photons preserve the intriguing properties of classical Airy beams, such as free acceleration and reduced diffraction, while exhibiting non-classical anti-correlations.
Given the multitude of applications of vector vortex beams there is a need for robust tools to measure them. Here we exploit the non-separability of such beams, akin to entanglement of quantum states, to apply tools traditionally associated with quantum measurements to these classical fields. We apply three measures of non-separability: a Bell inequality, a concurrence, and an entanglement entropy to define the "vectorness" of such beams. In addition to providing novel tools for the analysis of vector beams, we also introduce the concept of classical entanglement to explain why these tools are…
High-resolution addressing of individual ultracold atoms, trapped ions or solid state emitters allows for exquisite control in quantum optics experiments. This becomes possible through large aperture magnifying optics that project microscopic light patterns with diffraction limited performance. We use programmable amplitude holograms generated on a digital micromirror device to create arbitrary microscopic beam shapes with full phase and amplitude control. The system self-corrects for aberrations of up to several $λ$ and reduces them to $λ/50$, leading to light patterns with a precision on the…
We experimentally demonstrate amplitude and phase modulation of a time-energy entangled two-photon wave function. The entangled photons are produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion, spectrally dispersed in an prism compressor, modulated in amplitude and/or phase, and detected in coincidence by sum-frequency generation. First, we present a Fourier optical analysis of the optical setup yielding an analytic expression for the resulting field distribution at the exit plane of the shaping apparatus. We then introduce amplitude and/or phase shaping and present results which can only be obt…
Photon subtraction is useful to produce nonclassical states of light addressed to applications in photonic quantum technologies. After a very accelerated development, this technique makes possible obtaining either single photons or optical cats on demand. However, it lacks theoretical formulation enabling precise predictions for the produced fields. Based on the representation generated by the two-mode $SU(2)$ coherent states, we introduce a model of entangled light beams leading to the subtraction of photons in one of the modes, conditioned to the detection of any photon in the other mode. We…
Turbulent airflow in the atmosphere and the resulting random fluctuations in its refractive index have long been known as a major cause of image deterioration in astronomical imaging and figures among the obstacles for reliable optical communication when information is encoded in the spatial profile of a laser beam. Here we show that using correlation imaging and a suitably prepared source of photon pairs, the most severe of the disturbances inflicted on the beam by turbulence can be cancelled out. Other than a two-photon light source, only linear passive optical elements are needed and, as op…
Orbital angular momentum (OAM) entanglement is investigated in the Bessel-Gauss (BG) basis. Having a readily adjustable radial scale, BG modes provide a more favourable basis for OAM entanglement over Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes. The OAM bandwidth in terms of BG modes can be increased by selection of particular radial modes and leads to a flattening of the spectrum. The flattening of the spectrum allows for higher entanglement. We demonstrate increased entanglement in terms of BG modes by performing a Bell-type experiment and violating the appropriate Clauser Horne Shimony Holt (CHSH) inequal…
Entangled two-photon spectroscopy is expected to provide advantages compared with classical protocols. It is achieved by coherently controlling the spectral properties of energy-entangled photons. We present here an experimental setup that allows the spectral shaping of entangled photons with high resolution. We evaluate its performances by detecting sum frequency generation in a non-linear crystal. The efficiency of the process is compared when performed with classical or entangled light.
It is shown that bipartition of optical solitons can be used to generate entangled light beams. The achievable amount of entanglement can be substantially larger for N-bound solitons N=2,3 than for the fundamental soliton (N=1). An analysis of the mode structure of the entangled beams shows that just N modes are essentially entangled. In particular, partitioning of the fundamental soliton effectively produces 2-mode squeezed light.
The generating entangled state by using a 50/50 beamsplitter has been discussed in the literature before . In this paper we explore how to use an asymmetric beam-splitter to produce a new kind of entangled state. We construct such kind of states theoretically and then prove that they make up a complete and orthonormal representation in two-mode Fock space. Its application in finding new squeezing operator and new squeezed state is introduced.
By introducing concepts of beam shaping into quantum mechanics, we show how interference effects of the quantum wavefunction describing multiple electrons can exactly balance the repulsion among the electrons. With proper shaping of the fermionic wavefunction, we propose non-diffracting quantum wavepackets of multiple electrons that can also carry orbital angular momentum, in the form of multi-electron non-diffracting vortex beams. The wavefunction is designed to compensate for both the repulsion between electrons and for the diffraction-broadening. This wavefunction shaping facilitates the us…
We present an innovative method to address the relation between the purity of type-I polarization entangled states and the spatial properties of the pump laser beam. Our all-optical apparatus is based on a spatial light modulator, and it offers unprecedented control on the spatial phase function of the entangled states. In this way, we demonstrate quantitatively the relation between the purity of the generated state and spatial correlation function of the pump beam.
A new kind of tripartite coherent-entangled state (CES) $\ket{β,γ, x}_{μντ}$ is proposed, which exhibits the properties of both coherence and entanglement. We investigate its completeness and orthogonality, and find it can make up a representation of tripartite CES. A protocol for generating the tripartite CES is proposed using asymmetric beam splitter. Applications of the tripartite CES in quantum optics are also presented.
A quantum communication network can be constructed by distributing a multipartite entangled state to space-separated nodes. Entangled optical beams with highest flying speed and measurable brightness can be used as carriers to convey information in quantum communication networks. Losses and noises existing in real communication channels will reduce or even totally destroy entanglement. The phenomenon of disentanglement will result in the complete failure of quantum communication. Here, we present the experimental demonstrations on the disentanglement and the entanglement revival of tripartite …
We present a teleportation protocol based upon the entanglement produced from Fock states incident onto a beam splitter of arbitrary transmissivity. The teleportation fidelity is analysed, its trends being explained from consideration of a beam splitter's input/output characteristics.
A new device to generate polarization-entangled light in the continuous variable regime is introduced. It consists of an Optical Parametric Oscillator with two type-II phase-matched non-linear crystals orthogonally oriented, associated with birefringent elements for adjustable linear coupling. We give in this paper a theoretical study of its classical and quantum properties. It is shown that two optical beams with adjustable frequencies and well-defined polarization can be emitted. The Stokes parameters of the two beams are entangled. The principal advantage of this setup is the possibility to…
The multipartite polarization entangled states of bright optical beams directly associating with the spin states of atomic ensembles are one of the essential resources in the future quantum information networks, which can be conveniently utilized to transfer and convert quantum states across a network composed of many atomic nodes. In this letter, we present the experimental demonstration of tripartite polarization entanglement described by Stokes operators of optical field. The tripartite entangled states of light at the frequency resonant with D1 line of Rubidium atoms are transformed into t…
A new kind of tripartite non-symmetric coordinate coherent-entangled state (TNCCES) $ | β,γ,x >$ is proposed which exhibits the properties of both coherence and entanglement and makes up a new quantum mechanical representation. We investigate some properties of TNCCES such as completeness and orthogonality which prove it is just a tripartite complete continuous coordinate base. A protocol for generating TNCCES is proposed using asymmetric beam splitter. And in application of TNCCES, we find its corresponding Wigner operator and carry out its marginal distribution form; further a new tripartite …
We study the entanglement effect of beam splitter on the temporally stable phase states. Specifically, we consider the eigenstates (phase states) of an unitary phase operator resulting from the polar decomposition of ladder operators of generalized Weyl--Heisenberg algebras possessing finite dimensional representation space. The linear entropy that measures the degree of entanglement at the output of the beam splitter is analytically obtained. We find that the entanglement is not only strongly dependent on the Hilbert space dimension but also quite related to strength the parameter ensuring th…
Light beams having a vectorial field structure - or polarization - that varies over the transverse profile and a central optical singularity are called vector-vortex (VV) beams and may exhibit specific properties, such as focusing into "light needles" or rotation invariance, with applications ranging from microscopy and light trapping to communication and metrology. Individual photons in such beams exhibit a form of single-particle quantum entanglement between different degrees of freedom. On the other hand, the quantum states of two photons can be also entangled with each other. Here we combi…
We experimentally demonstrate a source of polarization entangled photon-pairs based on a single periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) crystal pumped with a broadband, free running laser diode. The crystal is placed within a linear beam-displacement interferometer, and emits photon-pairs based ontype-0 spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC). We observe pair rates of 0.56 Mpairs/s/mW in a single spatial mode with a polarization visibility of 97.7% over a spectral range of 100 nm. This experiment demonstrates a pathway towards observing Gigacount rates of polarization entang…
We numerically analyze the use of intense entangled twin beams for ultra-sensitive spectroscopic measurements in chemical and biological systems. The examined scheme makes use of intense frequency-modulated (chirped) entangled beams to successfully extract information about the intermediate material states that contribute to the two-photon excitation of an absorbing medium. Robustness of the presented method is examined with respect to the applied intervals of the frequency chirp.
The quantum characteristics of sum-frequency process in an optical cavity with an input signal optical beam, which is a half of entangled optical beams, are analyzed. The calculated results show that the quantum properties of the signal beam can be maintained after its frequency is conversed during the intracavity nonlinear optical interaction. The frequency-conversed output signal beam is still in an entangled state with the retained other half of initial entangled beams. The resultant quantum correlation spectra and the parametric dependences of the correlations on the initial squeezing fact…
We present a setup for a direct, total teleportation of a single-particle entangled state. Our scheme consists of a parametric down-conversion source, which emits a pair of entangled photons, and a dual Bell measurement system with two beam splitters and two pairs of detectors. An entangled state shared by a pair of beams can be directly transferred to another pair of beams with a 50% probability of success. By a straightforward generalization of the scheme, total teleportation of a multi-particle entangled state can also be performed.
In this paper, we introduce a controllable method for producing two and three-mode entangled coherent states (ECS's) using atom-field interaction in cavity QED and beam splitter. The generated states play central roles in linear optics, quantum computation and teleportation. We especially focus on qubit, qutrit and qufit like ECS's and investigate their entanglement by concurrence measure. Moreover, we illustrate decoherence properties of ECS's due to noisy channels, using negativity measure. At the end the effect of noise on monogamy inequality is discussed.
Physics of photons and electrons carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) is an exciting field of research in quantum optics and electron microscopy. Usually, one considers propagation of these vortex beams in a medium or external fields and their absorption or scattering on fixed targets. Here we consider instead a beam-beam collision. We show that elastic scattering of a Bessel vortex beam with a counterpropagating plane wave naturally leads to two vortex-entangled outgoing beams. The vortex entanglement implies that the two final particles are entangled not only in their orbital helicities b…
We suggest a quantum cryptographic scheme using continuous EPR-like correlations of bright optical beams. For binary key encoding, the continuous information is discretized in a novel way by associating a respective measurement, amplitude or phase, with a bit value "1" or "0". The secure key distribution is guaranteed by the quantum correlations. No pre-determined information is sent through the quantum channel contributing to the security of the system.
We report on the preparation of entangled two mode squeezed states of yet unseen quality. Based on a measurement of the covariance matrix we found a violation of the Reid and Drummond EPR-criterion at a value of only 0.36\pm0.03 compared to the threshold of 1. Furthermore, quantum state tomography was used to extract a single photon Fock state solely based on homodyne detection, demonstrating the strong quantum features of this pair of laser-beams. The probability for a single photon in this ensemble measurement exceeded 2/3.
An ultracold wave packet of bosonic atoms loaded into a travelling laser wave may form a many-atom soliton. This is disturbed by a homogeneous force field, for example by the inevitable gravitation. The wave packet is accelerated and therefore the laser frequency appears to be chirped in the rest frame of the atoms. We derive the effective nonlinear Schrödinger equation. It shows a time dependent nonlinearity coefficient which amounts to a damping or antidamping, respectively. The accelerated packet solution remains a soliton which changes its shape adiabatically. Similarly, an active shaping c…
Passing a photon number state through a balanced beam splitter will produce an entangled state in which the phases of the two output beams are highly correlated. This entangled state can be viewed as a generalized form of a Schrodinger cat state where there is an equal probability amplitude for all possible phases. We show that Bell's inequality can be violated using this entangled state and two distant measuring devices that consist of a single-photon interferometer with a Kerr medium in one path, a set of single-photon detectors, and postselection based on a homodyne measurement. These entan…
