Non-perturbative constraints on many body physics--such as the famous Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem--are valuable tools for studying strongly correlated systems. To this end, we present a number of non-perturbative results that constrain the low-energy physics of systems having conserved dipole moments. We find that for these systems, a unique translationally invariant gapped ground state is only possible if the polarization of the system is integer. Furthermore, if a lattice system also has $U(1)$ subsystem charge conservation symmetry, a unique gapped ground state is only possible if the particle filling along these subsystems is integer. We also apply these methods to spin systems, and determine criteria for the existence of a new type of magnetic response plateau in the presence of a non-uniform magnetic field. Finally, we formulate a version of Luttinger's theorem for 1D systems consisting of dipoles.
We prove the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorem on the energy spectrum of a general two or three-dimensional quantum many-body system with the U(1) particle number conservation and translation symmetry. Especially, it is demonstrated that the theorem holds in a system with long-range interactions. To this end, we introduce approximate magnetic translation symmetry under the total magnetic flux $Φ=2π$ instead of the exact translation symmetry, and explicitly construct low energy variational states. The energy spectrum at $Φ=2π$ is shown to agree with that at $Φ=0$ in the thermodynamic limit, whi…
The extension of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem to dimensions larger than one is discussed. It is explained why the variational wave-function built by the previous authors is of no help to prove the theorem in dimension larger than one. The short range R.V.B. picture of Sutherland, Rokhsar and Kivelson, Read and Chakraborty gives a strong support to the assertion that the theorem is indeed valid in any dimension. Some illustrations of the general ideas are displayed on exact spectra.
We prove two Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type theorems that apply to any translationally invariant and local fermionic $d$-dimensional lattice Hamiltonian for which fermion-number conservation is broken down to the conservation of fermion parity. We show that when the internal symmetry group $G^{\,}_{f}$ is realized locally (in a repeat unit cell of the lattice) by a nontrivial projective representation, then the ground state cannot be simultaneously nondegenerate, symmetric (with respect to lattice translations and $G^{\,}_{f}$), and gapped. We also show that when the repeat unit cell hosts an odd nu…

We study quantum phases and phase transitions in a one-dimensional interacting fermion system with a Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) type anomaly. Specifically, the inversion symmetry enforces any symmetry-preserving gapped ground state of the system to be a Kitaev chain, following a Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type theorem that we prove. Alternatively, via the Jordan-Wigner transformation, this system describes a spin system whose gapped ground states must break either the inversion or the Ising symmetry associated with fermion parity. We obtain a phase diagram using analytical methods and variational matr…
We consider an electron model of superconductivity on a three-dimensional lattice where there are on-site attractive Hubbard interaction and long-range repulsive Coulomb interaction. It is claimed that fully gapped $s$-wave superconductivity within this model, if present, exhibits spontaneous translation symmetry breaking possibly related to a charge order. Our discussions are based on an application of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem under some physical assumptions. The inconsistency between the proposed supersolid and experiments can impose some constraints on a reasonable choice of a theore…
We propose and prove a family of generalized Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorems for symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases on boson/spin models in any dimensions. The "conventional" LSM theorem, applicable to e.g. any translation invariant system with an odd number of spin-1/2 particles per unit cell, forbids a symmetric short-range-entangled ground state in such a system. Here we focus on systems with no LSM anomaly, where global/crystalline symmetries and fractional spins within the unit cell ensure that any symmetric SRE ground state must be a nontrivial SPT phase with anomalous bounda…
We develop a general operator algebraic method which focuses on projective representations of symmetry group for proving Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type theorems, i.e., no-go theorems that rule out the existence of a unique gapped ground state (or, more generally, a pure split state), for quantum spin chains with on-site symmetry. We first prove a theorem for translation invariant spin chains that unifies and extends two theorems proved by two of the authors in [OT1]. We then prove a Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type theorem for spin chains that are invariant under the reflection about the origin and not nece…
For a large class of finite-range quantum spin models with half-integer spins, we prove that uniqueness of the ground state implies the existence of a low-lying excited state. For systems of linear size L, of arbitrary finite dimension, we obtain an upper bound on the excitation energy (i.e., the gap above the ground state) of the form (C\log L)/L. This result can be regarded as a multi-dimensional Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem and provides a rigorous proof of a recent result by Hastings.
The Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorem and its higher-dimensional generalizations by Oshikawa and Hastings establish that a translation-invariant lattice model of spin-$1/2$'s can not have a non-degenerate ground state preserving both spin and translation symmetries. Recently it was shown that LSM theorems can be interpreted in terms of bulk-boundary correspondence of certain weak symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. In this work we discuss LSM-type theorems for two-dimensional fermionic systems, which have no bosonic analogs. They follow from a general classification of weak SPT phases…
We propose a geometric {approach to Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem for} quantum many-body systems with discrete spin-rotation symmetries and lattice inversion or rotation symmetry, but without translation symmetry assumed. Under symmetry-twisting on a $(d-1)$-dimensional plane, we find that any $d$-dimensional inversion-symmetric spin system possesses a doubly degenerate spectrum when it hosts a half-integer spin at the inversion-symmetric point. We also show that any rotation-symmetric generalized spin model with a projective representation at the rotation center has a similar degeneracy under s…
We introduce a new boundary condition which renders the flux-insertion argument for the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type theorems in two or higher dimensions free from the specific choice of system sizes. It also enables a formulation of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type theorems in arbitrary dimensions in terms of the anomaly in field theories of $1+1$ dimensions with a bulk correspondence as a BF-theory in 2+1 dimensions. Furthermore, we apply the anomaly-based formulation to the constraints on a half-filled spinless fermion on a square lattice with $π$ flux, utilizing time-reversal, the magnetic transla…
The Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorem and its descendants impose strong constraints on the low-energy behavior of interacting quantum systems. In this paper, we formulate LSM-type constraints for lattice translation invariant systems with generalized U(1) symmetries which have recently appeared in the context of fracton phases: U(1) polynomial shift and subsystem symmetries. Starting with a generic interacting system with conserved dipole moment, we examine the conditions under which it supports a symmetric, gapped, and non-degenerate ground state, which we find requires that both the filling …
Following recent developments in the classification of bosonic short-range entangled phases, we examine many-body quantum systems whose ground state fractionalization obeys the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorem. We generalize the topological classification of such phases by LSM anomalies (arXiv:1907.08204) to take magnetic and non-symmorphic lattice effects into account, and provide direct computations of the LSM anomaly in specific examples. We show that the anomaly-free condition coincides with established filling constraints (arXiv:1705.09298, arXiv:1505.04193), and we also derived new ones…
The Lieb-Mattis theorem is generalized to an antiferromagnetic spin-ladder model with four-spin cyclic exchange interaction. We prove that for J>2K, the antiferromagnetic ordering of energy levels takes place separately in two sectors, which remain symmetric and antisymmetric under the reflection with respect to the longitudinal axis of the ladder. We prove also that at the self-dual point J=2K, the Lieb-Mattis rule holds in the sectors with fixed number of rung singlets. In both cases, it agrees with the similar rule for Haldane chain with appropriate spin number.
We discuss quantum many-body systems with lattice translation and discrete onsite symmetries. We point out that, under a boundary condition twisted by a symmetry operation, there is an exact degeneracy of ground states if the unit cell forms a projective representation of the onsite discrete symmetry. Based on the quantum transfer matrix formalism, we show that, if the system is gapped, the ground-state degeneracy under the twisted boundary condition also implies a ground-state (quasi-)degeneracy under the periodic boundary conditions. This gives a compelling evidence for the recently proposed…
We present the first systematic study of the filling constraints to realize a `trivial' insulator symmetric under magnetic space group $\mathcal{M}$. The filling $ν$ must be an integer multiple of $m^{\mathcal{M}}$ to avoid spontaneous symmetry breaking or fractionalization in gapped phases. We improve the value of $m^{\mathcal{M}}$ in the literature and prove the tightness of the constraint for the majority of magnetic space groups. The result may shed light on the material search of exotic magnets with fractionalization.
We ask whether a local Hamiltonian with a featureless (fully gapped and nondegenerate) ground state could exist in certain quantum spin systems. We address this question by mapping the vicinity of certain quantum critical point (or gapless phase) of the $d-$dimensional spin system under study to the boundary of a $(d+1)-$dimensional bulk state, and the lattice symmetry of the spin system acts as an on-site symmetry in the field theory that describes both the selected critical point of the spin system, and the corresponding boundary state of the $(d+1)-$dimensional bulk. If the symmetry action …
We study a chiral spin liquid wave function defined as a Gutwziller projected BCS state with a complex pairing function. After projection, spontaneous dimerization is found for any odd but finite number of chains, thus satisfying the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem, whereas for even number of chains there is no dimerization. The two-dimensional thermodynamic limit is consistently reached for large number of chains since the dimer order parameter vanishes in this limit. This property clearly supports the possibility of a spin liquid ground state in two dimensions with a gap to all {\em physical} ex…
We present a mixed spin-(1/2, 5/2) chain composed of a charge-transfer salt (4-Br-$o$-MePy-V)FeCl$_4$. We observe the entire magnetization curve up to saturation, which exhibits a clear Lieb-Mattis magnetization plateau and subsequent quantum phase transition towards the gapless Luttinger-liquid phase. The observed magnetic behavior is quantitatively explained by a mixed spin-(1/2, 5/2) chain model. The present results demonstrate a quantum many-body effect based on quantum topology and provide a new stage in the search for topological properties in condensed matter physics.

A generalization of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem to higher dimensional spin systems is shown. The physical motivation for the result is that such spin systems typically either have long-range order, in which case there are gapless modes, or have only short-range correlations, in which case there are topological excitations. The result uses a set of loop operators, analogous to those used in gauge theories, defined in terms of the spin operators of the theory. We also obtain various cluster bounds on expectation values for gapped systems. These bounds are used, under the assumption of a gap,…
The $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice is expected to host a quantum spin-orbital liquid at low temperature with an astonishing candidate material, $α$-ZrCl$_3$. We employed the canonical thermal pure quantum state method to investigate the finite-temperature phase of this model. Exploiting the full symmetry of $\mathrm{SU}(4)$, the calculation up to a 24-site cluster, which is equivalent to 48 sites in the spin-1/2 language, is possible. This state-of-the-art computation with large-scale parallelization enables us to capture the thermodynamic properties of the $\mathrm…
In this paper we address the question of the existence of a spectral gap in a class of local Hamiltonians. These Hamiltonians have the following properties: their ground states are known exactly; all equal-time correlation functions of local operators are short-ranged; and correlation functions of certain non-local operators are critical. A variational argument shows gaplessness with $ω\propto k^2$ at critical points defined by the absence of certain terms in the Hamiltonian, which is remarkable because equal-time correlation functions of local operators remain short-ranged. We call such criti…

The Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorem states that a spin system with translation and spin rotation symmetry and half-integer spin per unit cell does not admit a gapped symmetric ground state lacking fractionalized excitations. That is, the ground state must be gapless, spontaneously break a symmetry, or be a gapped spin liquid. Thus, such systems are natural spin-liquid candidates if no ordering is found. In this work, we give a much more general criterion that determines when an LSM-type theorem holds in a spin system. For example, we consider quantum magnets with arbitrary space group symmet…
We apply a generalized version of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis Theorem to fermionic ladder systems to show the existence of a low-lying excited state (except for some special fillings). This can be regarded as a non-perturbative proof for the conservation under interaction of the sum of the Fermi wave vectors of the individual channels, corresponding to a generalized version of the Luttinger Theorem to fermionic ladder systems. We conclude by noticing that the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis Theorem is not applicable in this form to show the existence of low-lying excitations in the limit that the number of le…
The Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorem dictates that emergent low-energy states from a lattice model cannot be a trivial symmetric insulator if the filling per unit cell is not integral and if the lattice translation symmetry and particle number conservation are strictly imposed. In this paper, we compare the one-dimensional gapless states enforced by the LSM theorem and the boundaries of one-higher dimensional strong symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases from the perspective of quantum anomalies. We first note that, they can be both described by the same low-energy effective field theory…
In the first part of this paper, the extension of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem to dimensions larger than one is discussed. A counter example to the original formulation of Lieb-Schultz-Mattis and Affleck is exhibited and a more precise statement is formulated. The degeneracy of the ground-state in symmetry breaking phases with long-range order is analyzed. The second and third parts of the paper concern resonating valence-bond (RVB) spin liquids. In these phases the relationship between various authors approaches: Laughlin-Oshikawa, Sutherland, Rokhsar and Kivelson, Read and Chakraborty and…
We study the ground-state properties of the S=1/2 Heisenberg models on the quasi-onedimensional kagome strip lattices by the exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. The models with two different strip widths share the same lattice structure in their inner part with the spatially anisotropic two-dimensional kagome lattice. When there is no magnetic frustration, the well-known Lieb-Mattis ferrimagnetic state is realized in both models. When the strength of magnetic frustration is increased, on the other hand, the Lieb-Mattis-type ferrimagnetism is collapsed. We fi…
We consider 2+1D lattice models of interacting bosons or spins, with both magnetic flux and fractional spin in the unit cell. We propose and prove a modified Lieb-Shultz Mattis (LSM) theorem in this setting, which applies even when the spin in the enlarged magnetic unit cell is integral. There are two nontrivial outcomes for gapped ground states that preserve all symmetries. In the first case, one necessarily obtains a symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase with protected edge states. This allows us to readily construct models of SPT states by decorating dimer models of Mott insulators to …

It is well known that theorems of Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type prohibit the existence of a trivial symmetric gapped ground state in certain systems possessing a combination of internal and lattice symmetries. In the continuum description of such systems the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem is manifested in the form of a quantum anomaly afflicting the symmetry. We demonstrate this phenomenon in the context of the deconfined critical point between a Neel state and a valence bond solid in an $S =1/2$ square lattice antiferromagnet, and compare it to the case of $S=1/2$ honeycomb lattice where no anomaly i…
Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorems provide powerful constraints on the emergibility problem, i.e. whether a quantum phase or phase transition can emerge in a many-body system. We derive the topological partition functions that characterize the LSM constraints in spin systems with $G_s\times G_{int}$ symmetry, where $G_s$ is an arbitrary space group in one or two spatial dimensions, and $G_{int}$ is any internal symmetry whose projective representations are classified by $\mathbb{Z}_2^k$ with $k$ an integer. We then apply these results to study the emergibility of a class of exotic quantum crit…
We show that the exact ground state of the Lieb-Mattis Hamiltonian is an equal-weight superposition of all possible classical Néel states, and provide an exact formulation of this superposition in the $z$-spin basis for both $S=1/2$ and general $S$ using Schwinger bosons. In general, a superposition of possible rotations on a general initial state is symmetric if and only if the initial state has a nonzero overlap with a singlet state and is otherwise made up of states that vanish due to the symmetrization. Most notably, $|s, m=0 \rangle$ states will vanish if symmetrized, which explains how a…
We extend the Lieb-Schupp theorem to the Heisenberg models with higher order interactions on non-frustrated or frustrated finite lattices. These lattices are constructed by even numbered rings with or without crossing bonds and have reflection symmetry. The results show that all ground states have total spin zero in wide interaction parameters region which is not covered with the results of the Marshall-Lieb-Mattis type arguments.
