The goal of the present paper is to push forward the frontiers of computations on Farrell-Tate cohomology for arithmetic groups. The conjugacy classification of cyclic subgroups is reduced to the classification of modules of group rings over suitable rings of integers which are principal ideal domains, generalizing an old result of Reiner. As an example of the number-theoretic input required for the Farrell-Tate cohomology computations, we discuss in detail the homological torsion in PGL(3) over principal ideal rings of quadratic integers, accompanied by machine computations in the imaginary quadratic case.
We provide some new computations of Farrell--Tate and Bredon (co)homology for arithmetic groups. For calculations of Farrell--Tate or Bredon homology, one needs cell complexes wherecell stabilizers fix their cells pointwise. We provide two algorithms computing an efficient subdivision of a complex to achieve this rigidity property. Applying these algorithms to available cell complexes for PSL4(Z) provides computations of Farrell--Tate cohomology for small primes as well as the Bredon homology for the classifying spaces of proper actions with coefficients in the complex representation ring.
In this paper, we provide number-theoretic formulas for Farrell-Tate cohomology for SL\_2 over rings of S-integers in number fields satisfying a weak regularity assumption. These formulas describe group cohomology above the virtual cohomological dimension, and can be used to study some questions in homology of linear groups. We expose three applications, to (I) detection questions for the Quillen conjecture,(II) the existence of transfers for the Friedlander--Milnor conjecture,(III) cohomology of SL\_2 over number fields.

We introduce a method to explicitly determine the Farrell-Tate cohomology of discrete groups. We apply this method to the Coxeter triangle and tetrahedral groups as well as to the Bianchi groups, i.e. PSL_2 over the ring of integers in an imaginary quadratic number field, and to their finite index subgroups. We show that the Farrell-Tate cohomology of the Bianchi groups is completely determined by the numbers of conjugacy classes of finite subgroups. In fact, our access to Farrell-Tate cohomology allows us to detach the information about it from geometric models for the Bianchi groups and to e…
Let A be any finite dimensional Hopf algebra over a field k. We specify the Tate and Tate-Hochschild cohomology for A and introduce cup products that make them become graded rings. We establish the relationship between these rings. In particular, the Tate-Hochschild cohomology of A is isomorphic (as algebras) to its Tate cohomology with coefficients in an adjoint module. Consequently, the Tate cohomology ring of A is a direct summand of its Tate-Hochschild cohomology ring. As an example, we explicitly compute both the Tate and Tate-Hochschild cohomology for the Sweedler algebra H_4.
For algebras with radical square zero, we give a combinatorial description to the Tate-Hochschild cohomology. We compute the Gerstenhaber algebra structure on the Tate-Hochschild cohomology for some classes of such algebras.
We develop an Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence to compute Bredon cohomology of spaces with an action of a group given as a pullback. Using several other spectral sequences, and positive results on the Baum-Connes Conjecture, we are able to compute Equivariant K-theory and K-Homology of the reduced group C*-algebra of a 6-dimensional crystallographic group $Γ$ introduced by Vafa and Witten. We also use positive results on the Farrell-Jones Conjecture to give a vanishing result for the negative algebraic K-theory of the integral group ring of $Γ$.
We determine the Batalin-Vilkovisky structure on the Tate-Hochschild cohomology of the group algebra $kG$ of a finite group $G$ in terms of the additive decomposition. In particular, we show that the Tate cohomology of $G$ is a Batalin-Vilkovisky subalgebra of the Tate-Hochschild cohomology of the group algebra $kG$, and that the Tate cochain complex of $G$ is a cyclic $A_{\infty}$-subalgebra of the Tate-Hochschild cochain complex of $kG$.
We study Tate-Hochschild homology and cohomology for a two-sided Noetherian Gorenstein algebra. These (co)homology groups are defined for all degrees, non-negative as well as negative, and they agree with the usual Hochschild (co)homology groups for all degrees larger than the injective dimension of the algebra. We prove certain duality theorems relating the Tate-Hochschild (co)homology groups in positive degree to those in negative degree, in the case where the algebra is Frobenius. We explicitly compute all Tate-Hochschild (co)homology groups for certain classes of Frobenius algebras, namely…
Let G be a finite group and let k be a field of characteristic p. Given a finitely generated indecomposable non-projective kG-module M, we conjecture that if the Tate cohomology $\HHHH^*(G, M)$ of G with coefficients in M is finitely generated over the Tate cohomology ring $\HHHH^*(G, k)$, then the support variety V_G(M) of M is equal to the entire maximal ideal spectrum V_G(k). We prove various results which support this conjecture. The converse of this conjecture is established for modules in the connected component of k in the stable Auslander-Reiten quiver for kG, but it is shown to be fal…
We show that the Tate-Hochschild cohomology ring $HH^*(RG,RG)$ of a finite group algebra $RG$ is isomorphic to a direct sum of the Tate cohomology rings of the centralizers of conjugacy class representatives of $G$. Moreover, our main result provides an explicit formula for the cup product in $HH^*(RG,RG)$ with respect to this decomposition. As an example, this formula helps us to compute the Tate-Hochschild cohomology ring of the symmetric group $S_3$ with coefficients in a field of characteristic 3.
Tate cohomology (as well as Borel homology and cohomology) of connective K-theory for $G=(\mathbb{Z}/2)^n$ was completely calculated by Bruner and Greenlees. In this note, we essentially redo the calculation by a different, more elementary method, and we extend it to $p>2$ prime. We also identify the resulting spectra, which are products of Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectra, and finitely many finite Postnikov towers. For $p=2$, we also reconcile our answer completely with the result of Bruner and Greenlees, which is in a different form, and hence the comparison involves some non-trivial combinatorics…
Keller proved in 1999 that the Gerstenhaber algebra structure on the Hochschild cohomology of an algebra is an invariant of the derived category. In this paper, we adapt his approach to show that the Gerstenhaber algebra structure on the Tate-Hochschild cohomology of an algebra is preserved under singular equivalences of Morita type with level, a notion introduced by the author in previous work.
Given a smooth, proper family of varieties in characteristic $p>0$, and a cycle $z$ on a fibre of the family, we formulate a Variational Tate Conjecture characterising, in terms of the crystalline cycle class of $z$, whether $z$ extends cohomologically to the entire family. This is a characteristic $p$ analogue of Grothendieck's Variational Hodge Conjecture. We prove the conjecture for divisors, and an infinitesimal variant of the conjecture for cycles of higher codimension. This can be used to reduce the $\ell$-adic Tate conjecture for divisors over finite fields to the case of surfaces.
Using non-commutative differential forms, we construct a complex called singular Hochschild cochain complex for any associative algebra over a field. The cohomology of this complex is isomorphic to the Tate-Hochschild cohomology in the sense of Buchweitz. By a natural action of the cellular chain operad of the spineless cacti operad, introduced by R. Kaufmann, on the singular Hochschild cochain complex, we provide a proof of the Deligne's conjecture for this complex. More concretely, the complex is an algebra over the (dg) operad of chains of the little $2$-discs operad. By this action, we als…
We study integer-graded cohomology rings defined over Calabi-Yau categories. We show that the cohomology in negative degree is a trivial extension of the cohomology ring in non-negative degree, provided the latter admits a regular sequence of central elements of length two. In particular, the product of elements of negative degrees are zero. As corollaries we apply this to Tate-Hochschild cohomology rings of symmetric algebras, and to Tate cohomology rings over group algebras. We also prove similar results for Tate cohomology rings over commutative local Gorenstein rings.
We construct an intermediate cohmology between motivic cohomology and Weil-etale cohomology. Using this, the Bass conjecture on finite generation of motivic cohomology, and the Beilinson-Tate on the finite generation of Weil-etale cohomology are related.
We prove a few results concerning the notions of finite dimensionality of mixed Tate motives in the sense of Kimura and O'Sullivan. It is shown that being oddly or evenly finite dimensional is equivalent to vanishing of certain cohomology groups defined by means of Levine weight filtration. We then explain the relation to the Grothendieck group of the triangulated category D of mixed Tate motives. This naturally gives rise to a λ-ring structure on K_0(D).
Given a differential graded (dg) symmetric Frobenius algebra $A$ we construct an unbounded complex $\mathcal{D}^{*}(A,A)$, called the Tate-Hochschild complex, which arises as a totalization of a double complex having Hochschild chains as negative columns and Hochschild cochains as non-negative columns. We prove that the complex $\mathcal{D}^*(A,A)$ computes the singular Hochschild cohomology of $A$. We construct a cyclic (or Calabi-Yau) $A$-infinity algebra structure, which extends the classical Hochschild cup and cap products, and an $L$-infinity algebra structure extending the classical Gers…
The main result of this paper is a computation of the motivic cohomology of varieties of n \times m-matrices of of rank m, including both the ring structure and the action of the reduced power operations. The argument proceeds by a comparison of the general linear group-scheme with a Tate suspension of a space which is A1-equivalent to projective n - 1-space with a disjoint basepoint.
