In a recent work the first named author, Levitin and Vassiliev have constructed the wave propagator on a closed Riemannian manifold $M$ as a single oscillatory integral global both in space and in time with a distinguished complex-valued phase function. In this paper, first we give a natural reinterpretation of the underlying algorithmic construction in the language of ultrastatic Lorentzian manifolds. Subsequently we show that the construction carries over to the case of static backgrounds thanks to a suitable reduction to the ultrastatic scenario. Finally we prove that the overall procedure can be generalised to any globally hyperbolic spacetime with compact Cauchy surfaces. As an application, we discuss how, from our procedure, one can recover the local Hadamard expansion which plays a key role in all applications in quantum field theory on curved backgrounds.
In this article we consider variable coefficient, time-dependent wave equations. Using phase space methods we construct outgoing parametrices and prove Strichartz-type estimates globally in time. This is done in the context of C^2 metrics which satisfy a weak aymptotic flatness condition at infinity.
In this note, we consider wave packet parametrices for Schrodinger-like evolution equations. Under an integrability condition along the flow, we prove that the flow is then globally well-defined and bilipschitz. Under an additional smallness assumption, we prove that the kernel of the phase space operator decays rapidly away from the graph of the Hamilton flow. This can be used to prove that smoothness is preserved for finite times by the flow of the equation.
We construct a parametrix of a resolvent of elliptic differential operators acting on half-densities on manifolds with ends. The construction is carried out by introducing suitable pseudodifferential operators compatible with the end structure. Our class of pseudodifferential operators and symbols is independent of the choice of Riemannian metric on the manifold and applicable to both of asymptotically conical and hyperbolic manifolds. As an application, we prove the essential self-adjointness of elliptic symmetric differential operators on manifolds.
In this paper, a geometric process to compare solutions of symmetric hyperbolic systems on (possibly different) globally hyperbolic manifolds is realized via a family of intertwining operators. By fixing a suitable parameter, it is shown that the resulting intertwining operator preserves Hermitian forms naturally defined on the space of homogeneous solutions. As an application, we investigate the action of the intertwining operators in the context of algebraic quantum field theory. In particular, we provide a new geometric proof for the existence of the so-called Hadamard states on globally hy…
In this note a proof is given for global existence and uniqueness of minimal surfaces of Lorentzian type from a cylinder into globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds for given initial values up to the first derivatives.
A static rotating cosmic string metric is singular along a timelike line and fails to be globally hyperbolic; these features make it difficult to solve the wave equation by conventional energy methods. Working on a single angular mode at a time, we use microlocal methods to construct forward parametrices for wave and Klein--Gordon equations on such backgrounds.
Green-hyperbolic operators are linear differential operators acting on sections of a vector bundle over a Lorentzian manifold which possess advanced and retarded Green's operators. The most prominent examples are wave operators and Dirac-type operators. This paper is devoted to a systematic study of this class of differential operators. For instance, we show that this class is closed under taking restrictions to suitable subregions of the manifold, under composition, under taking "square roots", and under the direct sum construction. Symmetric hyperbolic systems are studied in detail.
We consider the Dirac operator on globally hyperbolic manifolds with timelike boundary and show well-posedness of the Cauchy initial-boundary value problem coupled to MIT-boundary conditions. This is achieved by transforming the problem locally into a symmetric positive hyperbolic system, proving existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and then using local methods developed by Lax, Phillips and Rauch, Massey to show smoothness of the solutions. Our proof actually works for a slightly more general class of local boundary conditions.
We give a complete framework for the Gupta-Bleuler quantization of the free electromagnetic field on globally hyperbolic space-times. We describe one-particle structures that give rise to states satisfying the microlocal spectrum condition. The field algebras in the so-called Gupta-Bleuler representations satisfy the time-slice axiom, and the corresponding vacuum states satisfy the microlocal spectrum condition. We also give an explicit construction of ground states on ultrastatic space-times. Unlike previous constructions, our method does not require a spectral gap or the absence of zero mode…
For the light ray transform on globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds of dimension $n+1 \geq 3$ acting on compactly supported distributions, we show that the Schwartz kernel of the normal operator is a paired Lagrangian distribution with non-vanishing principal symbols on each Lagrangians. We obtain Sobolev estimates for the light ray transform, and clarify the determination of light-like singularities using the normal operator.
We construct Hadamard states for the Yang-Mills equation linearized around a smooth, space-compact background solution. We assume the spacetime is globally hyperbolic and its Cauchy surface is compact or equal $\rr^d$. We first consider the case when the spacetime is ultra-static, but the background solution depends on time. By methods of pseudodifferential calculus we construct a parametrix for the associated vectorial Klein-Gordon equation. We then obtain Hadamard two-point functions in the gauge theory, acting on Cauchy data. A key role is played by classes of pseudodifferential operators t…
A Duistermaat-Guillemin-Gutzwiller trace formula for Dirac-type operators on a globally hyperbolic spatially compact stationary spacetime is achieved by generalising the recent construction by Strohmaier and Zelditch [Adv. Math. \textbf{376}, 107434 (2021)] to a vector bundle setting. We have analysed the spectrum of the Lie derivative with respect to a global timelike Killing vector field on the solution space of the Dirac equation and found that it consists of discrete real eigenvalues. The distributional trace of the time evolution operator has singularities at the periods of induced Killin…
In 1969, Choquet-Bruhat and Geroch established the existence of a unique maximal globally hyperbolic Cauchy development of given initial data for the Einstein equations. Their proof, however, has the unsatisfactory feature that it relies crucially on the axiom of choice in the form of Zorn's lemma. In this paper we present a proof that avoids the use of Zorn's lemma. In particular, we provide an explicit construction of this maximal globally hyperbolic development.
We introduce a class of causal manifolds which contains the globally hyperbolic spacetimes and we prove global propagation theorems for sheaves on such manifolds. As an application, we solve globally the Cauchy problem for hyperfunction solutions of hyperbolic systems.
Here we prove a global existence theorem for the solutions of the semi-linear wave equation with critical non-linearity admitting a positive definite Hamiltonian. Formulating a parametrix for the wave equation in a globally hyperbolic curved spacetime, we derive an apriori pointwise bound for the solution of the nonlinear wave equation in terms of the initial energy, from which the global existence follows in a straightforward way. This is accomplished in two steps. First, based on Moncrief's light cone formulation we derive an expression for the scalar field in terms of integrals over the pas…
It is sometimes claimed that Lorentz invariant wave equations which allow superluminal propagation exhibit worse predictability than subluminal equations. To investigate this, we study the Born-Infeld scalar in two spacetime dimensions. This equation can be formulated in either a subluminal or a superluminal form. Surprisingly, we find that the subluminal theory is less predictive than the superluminal theory in the following sense. For the subluminal theory, there can exist multiple maximal globally hyperbolic developments arising from the same initial data. This problem does not arise in the…
In this paper, we first prove that the cubic, defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the two dimensional hyperbolic space with radial initial data in $H^s(\mathbb{H}^2)$ is globally well-posed and scatters when $s > \frac{3}{4}$. Then we extend the result to nonlineraities of order $p>3$. The result is proved by extending the high-low method of Bourgain in the hyperbolic setting and by using a Morawetz type estimate proved by the first author and Ionescu.
