P. Gabriel showed that for an unital ring $R$, there exists a bijective correspondence between the set of Gabriel filters of $R$ and the set of Giraud subcategories of $\mathrm{Mod}(R)$ (see \cite[Lemme 1]{Gabriel1} on page 412). In this paper we prove analogous of Gabriel's result: for a small preadditive category $\mathcal{C}$, there exists a bijective correspondence between the Gabriel filters of $\mathcal{C}$ and Giraud subcategories of $\mathrm{Mod}(\mathcal{C})$.
Extending constructions by Gabriel and Zisman, we develop a functorial framework for the cohomology and homology of simplicial sets with very general coefficient systems given by functors on simplex categories into abelian categories. Furthermore we construct Leray type spectral sequences for any map of simplicial sets. We also show that these constructions generalise and unify the various existing versions of cohomology and homology of small categories and as a bonus provide new insight into their functoriality.
In this paper we define Gabriel monads as the idempotent monads associated to exact reflective localizations in Abelian categories and characterize them by a simple set of properties. The coimage of a Gabriel monad is a Serre quotient category. The Gabriel monad induces an equivalence between its coimage and its image, the localizing subcategory of local objects.
We develop a Gabriel-Morita theory for strong monads on pointed monoidal model categories. Assuming that the model category is excisive, i.e. the derived suspension functor is conservative, we show that if the monad T preserves cofibre sequences up to homotopy and has a weakly invertible strength, then the category of T-algebras is Quillen equivalent to the category of T(I)-modules where I is the monoidal unit. This recovers Schwede's theorem on connective stable homotopy over a pointed Lawvere theory as special case.
The purpose of this paper is to develop an efficient computational model for Abelian categories of coherent sheaves over certain classes of varieties. These categories are naturally described as Serre quotient categories. Hence, our approach relies on describing general Serre quotient categories in a constructive way which leads to an efficient computer implementation.
Given a group $G$, we define suitable 2-categorical structures on the class of all small categories with $G$-actions and on the class of all small $G$-graded categories, and prove that 2-categorical extensions of the orbit category construction and of the smash product construction turn out to be 2-equivalences (2-quasi-inverses to each other), which extends the Cohen-Montgomery duality.
This is an extended version of my earlier articel "Projective and injective objects in symmetric categorical groups. arXiv:1007.0121v1." Several new facts added, including the material on the derived 2-functors and the proof of the Gabriel-Mitchel theorem and the Morita theory for 2-rings.
We prove a derived version of the Gabriel-Popescu theorem in the framework of dg-categories and t-structures. This exhibits any pretriangulated dg-category with a suitable t-structure (such that its heart is a Grothendieck abelian category) as a t-exact localization of a derived dg-category of dg-modules. We give an original proof based on a generalization of Mitchell's argument in "A quick proof of the Gabriel-Popesco theorem" and involving derived injective objects. As an application, we also give a short proof that derived categories of Grothendieck abelian categories have a unique dg-enhan…
We develop the theory of 2-quivers and quiver 2-categories to run in parallel with the classical theory of quiver algebras. A quiver 2-category is always finitary, and, conversely, every finitary 2-category will be bi-equivalent with a quiver 2-category for a unique underlying reduced 2-quiver. As an application, we produce an example of a fiat 2-category, one of whose Duflo involutions is not self-adjoint.
It is a result of Gabriel that hereditary torsion pairs in categories of modules are in bijection with certain filters of ideals of the base ring, called Gabriel filters or Gabriel topologies. A result of Jans shows that this bijection restricts to a correspondence between (Gabriel filters that are uniquely determined by) idempotent ideals and TTF triples. Over the years, these classical results have been extended in several different directions. In this paper we present a detailed and self-contained exposition of an extension of the above bijective correspondences to additive functor categori…
The theory of categories of fractions as originally developed by Gabriel and Zisman is reviewed in a pedagogical manner giving detailed proofs of all statements. A weakening of the category of fractions axioms used by Higson is discussed and shown to be equivalent to the original axioms.
This explains a computer formulation of Gabriel-Zisman localization of categories in the proof assistant Coq. It includes both the general localization construction with the proof of GZ's Lemma 1.2, as well as the construction using calculus of fractions. The proof files are bundled with the other preprint "Files for GZ localization" posted simultaneously.
Frobenius monoidal functors preserve duals. We show that conversely, (co)monoidal functors between autonomous categories which preserve duals are Frobenius monoidal. We apply this result to linearly distributive functors between autonomous categories.
The paper studies analytic functors between presheaf categories. Generalising results of A. Joyal and of R. Hasegawa for analytic endofunctors on the category of sets, we give two characterisations of analytic functors between presheaf categories over groupoids: (i) as functors preserving filtered colimits, quasi-pullbacks, and cofiltered limits; and (ii) as functors preserving filtered colimits and wide quasi-pullbacks. The development establishes that small groupoids, analytic functors between their presheaf categories, and quasi-cartesian natural transformations between them form a 2-catego…
We study the transfer of (dual) relative Rickart properties via functors between abelian categories, and we deduce the transfer of (dual) relative Baer property. We also give applications to Grothendieck categories, comodule categories and (graded) module categories, with emphasis on endomorphism rings.
This paper provides several characterizations of final functors between internal groupoids in Barr-exact categories. In particular, it is proved that an internal functor between groupoids is final if and only if it is full and essentially surjective.
In this paper we introduce the notion of a categorical Mackey functor. This categorical notion allows us to obtain new Mackey functors by passing to Quillen's $K$-theory of the corresponding abelian categories. In the case of an action by monoidal autoequivalences on a monoidal category the Mackey functor obtained at the level of Grothendieck rings has in fact a Green functor structure.
Exponentiable functors between quantaloid-enriched categories are characterized in elementary terms. The proof goes as follows: the elementary conditions on a given functor translate into existence statements for certain adjoints that obey some lax commutativity; this, in turn, is precisely what is needed to prove the existence of partial products with that functor; so that the functor's exponentiability follows from the works of Niefield [1980] and Dyckhoff and Tholen [1987].
We thoroughly treat several familiar and less familiar definitions and results concerning categories, functors and distributors enriched in a base quantaloid Q. In analogy with V-category theory we discuss such things as adjoint functors, (pointwise) left Kan extensions, weighted (co)limits, presheaves and free (co)completion, Cauchy completion and Morita equivalence. With an appendix on the universality of the quantaloid Dist(Q) of Q-enriched categories and distributors.
In this paper we generalize Tannakian formalism to fiber functors over general tensor categories. We will show that (under some technical conditions) if the fiber functor has a section, then the source category is equivalent to the category of comodules over a Hopf algebra in the target category. We will also give a description of this Hopf algebra using the notion of framed objects.
Gluing of two pseudo functors has been studied by Deligne, Ayoub, and others in the construction of extraordinary direct image functors in étale cohomology, stable homotopy, and mixed motives of schemes. In this article, we study more generally the gluing of finitely many pseudo functors. Given pseudo functors $F_i\colon \mathcal{A}_i\to \mathcal{D}$ defined on sub-$2$-categories $\mathcal{A}_i$ of a $2$-category $\mathcal{C}$, we are concerned with the problem of finding pseudo functors $\mathcal{C}\to \mathcal{D}$ extending $F_i$ up to pseudo natural equivalences. With the help of $n$-fold c…
We study the notion of fundamental group in the framework of descent-exact homological categories. This setting is sufficiently wide to include several categories of "algebraic" nature such as the almost abelian categories, the semi-abelian categories, and the categories of topological semi-abelian algebras. For many adjunctions in this context, the fundamental groups are described by generalised Brown-Ellis-Hopf formulae for the integral homology of groups.
We develop and extend the theory of Mackey functors as an application of enriched category theory. We define Mackey functors on a lextensive category $\E$ and investigate the properties of the category of Mackey functors on $\E$. We show that it is a monoidal category and the monoids are Green functors. Mackey functors are seen as providing a setting in which mere numerical equations occurring in the theory of groups can be given a structural foundation. We obtain an explicit description of the objects of the Cauchy completion of a monoidal functor and apply this to examine Morita equivalence …
Let $(\mathcal{C},\mathbb{E},\mathfrak{s})$ be an extriangulated category with a proper class $ξ$ of $\mathbb{E}$-triangles. In this paper, we study Gorenstein derived functors for extriangulated categories. More precisely, we first introduce the notion of the proper $ξ$-Gorenstein projective resolution for any object in $\mathcal{C}$ and define the functors $ξ\text{xt}_{\mathcal{GP}(ξ)}$ and $ξ\text{xt}_{\mathcal{GI}(ξ)}$. Under some assumptions, we give some equivalent characterizations for any object with finite $ξ$-Gorenstein projective dimension. Next we get some nice results by using der…
It is known that, for $C$ an abelian category and $I$ small, the functor category $C^I$ is again abelian; thus we can do homology in such categories, and examine how it relates to homology in $C$ itself. However, there does not seem to be any good reference collecting these ideas together. This article seeks to fill the gap by showing that homology in $C^I$ behaves as one would expect.
This dissertation is devoted to a study of adjunctions concerning categories enriched over a quantaloid Q (or Q-categories for short), with the following types of adjunctions involved: (1) adjoint functors between Q-categories; (2) adjoint distributors between Q-categories; (3) adjoint functors between categories consisting of Q-categories. For a small quantaloid Q and a distributor between Q-categories, two adjunctions between the Q-categories of contravariant and covariant presheaves are presented. These adjunctions respectively extend the fundamental construction of Isbell adjunctions and K…
We prove an adjoint functor theorem in the setting of categories enriched in a monoidal model category $\mathcal V$ admitting certain limits. When $\mathcal V$ is equipped with the trivial model structure this recaptures the enriched version of Freyd's adjoint functor theorem. For non-trivial model structures, we obtain new adjoint functor theorems of a homotopical flavour - in particular, when $\mathcal V$ is the category of simplical sets we obtain a homotopical adjoint functor theorem appropriate to the $\infty$-cosmoi of Riehl and Verity. We also investigate accessibility in the enriched s…
As composites of constant, (co)product, identity, and powerset functors, Kripke polynomial functors form a relevant class of $\mathsf{Set}$-functors in the theory of coalgebras. The main goal of this paper is to expand the theory of limits in categories of coalgebras of Kripke polynomial functors to the context of quantale-enriched categories. To assume the role of the powerset functor we consider "powerset-like" functors based on the Hausdorff $\mathsf{V}$-category structure. As a starting point, we show that for a lifting of a $\mathsf{SET}$-functor to a topological category $\mathsf{X}$ ove…
In this paper, we state and prove precise theorems on the classification of the category of (braided) categorical groups and their (braided) monoidal functors, and some applications obtained from the basic studies on monoidal functors between categorical groups.
In this paper we give sufficient conditions for lifting an enhanced factorization system $ (\mathcal{E}, \mathcal{M}) $ on a $ 2 $-category $ \mathbf{D} $ to the functor $ 2 $-category $ \mathbf{D}^{\mathbf{C}} $, where $ \mathbf{C} $ is a small $ 2 $-category. Due to previous work of Lack, our work provides coherence results for $ 2 $-monads on functor $ 2 $-categories. These coherence results are of immediate interest to an ongoing collaboration of Guillou, May, Merling, and Osorno on equivariant infinite loop space theory.
We show that each rigid monoidal category A over a field defines a family of universal tensor categories, which together classify all faithful monoidal functors from A to tensor categories. Each of the universal tensor categories classifies monoidal functors of a given 'homological kernel' and can be realised as a sheaf category, not necessarily on A. This yields a theory of 'local abelian envelope' which completes the notion of monoidal abelian envelopes.
Each Gr-functor of the type $(φ,f)$ of a Gr-category of the type $(Π,\C)$ has the obstruction be an element $\overline{k}\in H^3(Π,\C).$ When this obstruction vanishes, there exists a bijection between congruence classes of Gr-functors of the type $(φ,f)$ and the cohomology group $H^2(Π,\C).$ Then the relation of Gr-category theory and the group extension problem can be established and used to prove that each Gr-category is Gr-equivalent to a strict one.
In this paper we present background results in enriched category theory and enriched model category theory necessary for developing model categories of enriched functors suitable for doing functor calculus.
In this short note we show that under very mild conditions on a functor between exact categories $F:\mathcal{D}\rightarrow\mathcal{E}$ it is possible to derive $F$ at the level of unbounded complexes. We also give applications to deriving functors between $Pro$- and $Ind$- categories.
We study the transfer of (dual) relative CS-Rickart properties via functors between abelian categories. We consider fully faithful functors as well as adjoint pairs of functors. We give several applications to Grothendieck categories and, in particular, to (graded) module and comodule categories.
Fiber functors on Temperley-Lieb categories are investigated with the help of classification results on non-degenerate bilinear forms. The case of unitary fiber functors is also considered.
We study right quasi-representable differential graded bimodules as quasi-functors between dg-categories. We prove that a quasi-functor has a left adjoint if and only if it is left quasi-representable.
Relative realizability toposes satisfy a universal property that involves regular functors to other categories. We use this universal property to define what relative realizability categories are, when based on other categories than of the topos of sets. This paper explains the property and gives a construction for relative realizability categories that works for arbitrary base Heyting categories. The universal property shows us some new geometric morphisms to relative realizability toposes too.
We survey results on Hedetniemi's conjecture which are connected to adjoint functors in the "thin" category of graphs, and expose the obstacles to extending these results.
In this paper, we consider categories with colored morphisms and functors such that morphisms assigned to morphisms with a common color have a common color. In this paper, we construct a morphism-colored functor such that any morphism-colored functor from a given small morphism-colored groupoid to any discrete morphism-colored category factors through it. We also apply the main result to a schemoid constructed from a Hamming scheme.
This article represents a preliminary attempt to link Kan extensions, and some of their further developments, to Fourier theory and quantum algebra through *-autonomous monoidal categories and related structures.
Adjoint functor theorems give necessary and sufficient conditions for a functor to admit an adjoint. In this paper we prove general adjoint functor theorems for functors between $\infty$-categories. One of our main results is an $\infty$-categorical generalization of Freyd's classical General Adjoint Functor Theorem. As an application of this result, we recover Lurie's adjoint functor theorems for presentable $\infty$-categories. We also discuss the comparison between adjunctions of $\infty$-categories and homotopy adjunctions, and give a treatment of Brown representability for $\infty$-catego…
We investigate certain categorical aspects of Voevodsky's triangulated categories of motives. For this, various recollements for Grothendieck categories of enriched functors and their derived categories are established. In order to extend these recollements further with respect to Serre's localization, the concept of the (strict) Voevodsky property for Serre localizing subcategories is introduced. This concept is inspired by the celebrated Voevodsky theorem on homotopy invariant presheaves with transfers. As an application, it is shown that Voevodsky's triangulated categories of motives fit in…
We show that direct summands of certain additive functors arising as bifunctors with a fixed argument in an abelian category are again of that form whenever the fixed argument has finite length or, more generally, satisfies the descending chain condition on images of nested endomorphisms. In particular, this provides a positive answer to a conjecture of M. Auslander in the case of categories of finite modules over artin algebras. This implies that the covariant Ext functors are the only injectives in the category of defect-zero finitely presented functors on such categories.
A classification is provided of functors, in particular polynomial ones, from a category with a zero object in which every object is a finite sum of copies of a generating object, into an abelian category. This classification is extended to include functors from a category with sums and a zero object, carrying a small, regular projective generator.
