The form of Hamiltonian and Diffeomorphism constraints in Sen-Ashtekar-Barbero-Immirzi variables is well known for the spacelike 3+1 ADM foliation. It is also known that Sen-Ashtekar-Barbero-Immirzi connection can be introduced only in 3 dimensional space and does not work for $D > 3$. The reason it works in $D = 3$ is due to existence of isomorphism between $so(3)$ algebra and $R^3$ space with vector product. It turns out that similar isomorphism exists between $so(2,1)$ algebra and $R^3_{2,1}$ space algebra with respect to its vector product. By using this isomorphism we find both analog of Sen-Ashtekar-Barbero-Immirzi connection for timelike 3+1 foliation and corresponding forms of Gauss, Diffeomorphism and Hamiltonian constraints. We then combine spacelike and timelike foliation constraints into the generalized form of the Hamiltonian and Diffeomorphism constrains using generalized Sen-Ashtekar-Barbero-Immirzi connection variables. We prove that Immirzi parameter is covariant with respect to timelike-spacelike ADM foliation change as in both cases in self-dual Ashtekar case it disappears in Hamiltionian constraint keeping it polynomial.
We study the consequences of the existence of timelike and spacelike Ricci collineation vectors (RCVs) for string fluid in the context of general relativity. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for a space-time with string fluid to admit a timelike RCV, parallel to $u^a$, and a spacelike RCV, parallel to $n^a$. In these cases, some results obtained are discussed.
A generalization of two recently proposed general relativity Hamiltonians, to the case of a general (d+1)-dimensional dilaton gravity theory in a manifold with a timelike or spacelike outer boundary, is presented.
We present a spinfoam formulation of Lorentzian quantum General Relativity. The theory is based on a simple generalization of an Euclidean model defined in terms of a field theory over a group. The model is an extension of a recently introduced Lorentzian model, in which both timelike and spacelike components are included. The spinfoams in the model, corresponding to quantized 4-geometries, carry a natural non-perturbative local causal structure induced by the geometry of the algebra of the internal gauge (sl(2,C)). Amplitudes can be expressed as integrals over the spacelike unit-vectors hyper…
This paper is devoted to the investigation of the consequences of timelike and spacelike matter inheritance vectors in specific forms of energy-momentum tensor, i.e., for string cosmology (string cloud and string fluid) and perfect fluid. Necessary and sufficient conditions are developed for a spacetime with string cosmology and perfect fluid to admit a timelike matter inheritance vector, parallel to $u^a$ and spacelike matter inheritance vector, parallel to $x^a$. We compare the outcome with the conditions of conformal Killing vectors. This comparison provides us the conditions for the existe…
It is well known that static spherically symmetric spacetimes can admit foliations by flat spacelike hypersurfaces, which are best described in terms of the Painlevè--Gullstrand coordinates. The uniqueness and existence of such foliations were addressed earlier. In this paper, we prove, purely geometrically, that any possible foliation of a static spherically symmetric spacetime by an arbitrary codimension-one spherical spacelike geometry, up to time translation and rotation, is unique, and we find the algebraic condition under which it exists. This leads us to what can be considered as the mo…
It is known that spherically symmetric static spacetimes admit a foliation by °at hypersurfaces. Such foliations have explicitly been constructed for some spacetimes, using different approaches, but none of them have proved or even discussed the uniqueness of these foliations. The issue of uniqueness becomes more important due to suitability of °at foliations for studying black hole physics. Here °at spherically symmetric spacelike hy- persurfaces are obtained by a direct method. It is found that spherically symmetric static spacetimes admit °at spherically symmetric hypersurfaces, and that th…
There exist Kruskal like coordinates for the Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) black hole spacetime which are regular at coordinate singularities. Non existence of such coordinates for the extreme RN black hole spacetime has already been shown. Also the Carter coordinates available for the extreme case are not manifestly regular at the coordinate singularity, therefore, a numerical procedure was developed to obtain free fall geodesics and flat foliation for the extreme RN black hole spacetime. The Kottler-Schwarzschild-de Sitter (KSSdS) spacetime geometry is similar to the RN geometry in the sense that,…
A new general procedure to construct realistic spacetimes is introduced. It is based on the null congruence on a time-oriented Lorentzian manifold associated to a certain timelike vector field. As an application, new examples of stably causal Petrov type D spacetimes which obey the timelike convergence condition and which admit an isometric spacelike circle action are obtained.
We propose a set of consistent boundary conditions containing the spacelike warped black holes solutions of Topologically Massive Gravity. We prove that the corresponding asymptotic charges whose algebra consists in a Virasoro algebra and a current algebra are finite, integrable and conserved. A similar analysis is performed for the timelike warped AdS_3 spaces which contain a family of regular solitons. The energy of the boundary Virasoro excitations is positive while the current algebra leads to negative (for the spacelike warped case) and positive (for the timelike warped case) energy bound…
We prove a global existence theorem (with respect to a geometrically- defined time) for globally hyperbolic solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations which admit a $T^2$ isometry group with two-dimensional spacelike orbits, acting on $T^3$ spacelike surfaces.
We introduce 3+1 timelike foliation of the four dimensional Lorentz manifold to derive the 3+1 Sen-Ashtekar-Barbero-Immirzi formalism in case of $SO(2,1)$ rotation gauge group, which is possible due to the existence of the $so(2,1)$ algebra isomorphism to $R^3_{2,1}$ algebra with respect to the vector product. We prove that the newly introduced flux and extrinsic curvature variables preserve the symplectic structure of the original variables. We then introduce the modified rotational constraint and succeed to write it as a Gauss constraint of a newly obtained connection. The newly obtained con…
We compute the Hermitian sector of the relative BRST cohomology of the spacelike and timelike Liouville theories with generic real central charge $c_L$ in each case, coupled to a spacelike Coulomb gas and a generic transverse CFT. This paper is a companion of arXiv:1905.12689, and its main goal is to completely characterize the cohomology of the timelike theory with $c_L \le 1$ which was defined there. We also apply our formulas to revisit the BRST cohomology of the spacelike Liouville theory with $c_L > 1$, which includes generalized minimal gravity. We prove a no-ghost theorem for the Hermit…
We first summarize the characterization of smooth spacelike spherically symmetric constant mean curvature (SS-CMC) hypersurfaces in the Schwarzschild spacetime and Kruskal extension. Then use the characterization to prove special SS-CMC foliation property, and verify part of the conjecture by Malec and Ó Murchadha in their 2003 paper.
What is the shape of space in a spacetime? One way of addressing this issue is to consider edgeless spacelike submanifolds of the spacetime. An alternative is to foliate the spacetime by timelike curves and consider the quotient obtained by identifying points on the same timelike curve. In this article we investigate each of these notions and obtain conditions such that it yields a meaningful shape of space. We also consider the relationship between these two notions and find conditions for the quotient space to be diffeomorphic to any edgeless spacelike hypersurface. In particular, we find co…
Within the twistorial parametrization of Loop Quantum Gravity we investigate the consequences of choosing a spacelike normal vector in the linear simplicity constraints. The amplitudes for the $SU(2)$ boundary states of Loop Quantum Gravity, given by most of the current spinfoam models, are constructed in such a way that even in the bulk only spacelike building blocks occur. Using a spacelike normal vector in the linear simplicity constraints allows us to distinguish spacelike from timelike 2-surfaces. We propose in this paper a quantum theory that includes both spatial and temporal building b…
It is known that spherically symmetric spacetimes admit flat spacelike foliations. We point out a simple method of seeing this result via the Hamiltonian constraints of general relativity. The method yields explicit formulas for the extrinsic curvatures of the slicings.
Being motivated by open questions in gauge field theories, we consider non-standard de Rham cohomology groups for timelike compact and spacelike compact support systems. These cohomology groups are shown to be isomorphic respectively to the usual de Rham cohomology of a spacelike Cauchy surface and its counterpart with compact support. Furthermore, an analog of the usual Poincaré duality for de Rham cohomology is shown to hold for the case with non-standard supports as well. We apply these results to find optimal spaces of linear observables for analogs of arbitrary degree $k$ of both the vect…
When studying the causal propagation of a field in a globally hyperbolic spacetime M, one often wants to express the physical intuition that it has compact support in spacelike directions, or that its support is a spacelike compact set. We compare a number of logically distinct formulations of this idea, and of the complementary idea of timelike compactness, and we clarify their interrelations. E.g., a closed subset A of M has a compact intersection with all Cauchy surfaces if and only if A is contained in J(K) for some compact set K. (However, it does not suffice to consider only those Cauchy…
We construct a large class of vacuum solutions of the Einstein equations without any symmetries and with controlled asymptotics near a timelike singularity. The solutions are obtained by a Fuchs analysis of the equations which evolve the metric in a spacelike direction. We further observe that the changes of signs of some of the terms (walls) in the associated Hamiltonian invalidate the "cosmological billards" heuristic arguments for existence of singularities of mixmaster type in the current context.
We construct gravitating superconducting string solutions of the U(1)_{local} x U(1)_{global} model solving the coupled system of Einstein and matter field equations numerically. We study the properties of these solutions in dependence on the ratio between the symmetry breaking scale and the Planck mass. Using the macroscopic stability conditions formulated by Carter, we observe that the coupling to gravity allows for a new stable region that is not present in the flat space-time limit. We match the asymptotic metric to the Kasner metric and show that the relations between the Kasner coefficie…
Given a spacelike foliation of a spacetime and a marginally outer trapped surface S on some initial leaf, we prove that under a suitable stability condition S is contained in a ``horizon'', i.e. a smooth 3-surface foliated by marginally outer trapped slices which lie in the leaves of the given foliation. We also show that under rather weak energy conditions this horizon must be either achronal or spacelike everywhere. Furthermore, we discuss the relation between ``bounding'' and ``stability'' properties of marginally outer trapped surfaces.
We seek S-brane solutions in D=11 supergravity which can be characterized by a harmonic function H on the flat transverse space. It turns out that the Einstein's equations force H to be a linear function of the transverse coordinates. The codimension one H=0 hyperplane can be spacelike, timelike or null and the spacelike case reduces to the previously obtained SM2 or SM5 brane solutions. We then consider static S-brane configurations having smeared timelike directions where the transverse Lorentzian symmetry group is broken down to its maximal orthogonal subgroup. Assuming that the metric func…
Mass of singularity is defined, and its relation to whether the singularity is spacelike, timelike or null is discussed for spherically symmetric spacetimes. It is shown that if the mass of singularity is positive (negative) the singularity is non-timelike (non-spacelike). The connection between the sign of the mass and the force on a particle is also discussed.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of a marginal tube, which is a hypersurface foliated by marginal surfaces. It generalises the notion of a marginally trapped tube and several notions of black hole horizons, for example trapping horizons, isolated horizons, dynamical horizons, etc. We prove that if every spacelike section of a marginal tube is a marginal surface, then the marginal tube is null. There is no assumption on the topology of the marginal tube. To prove it, we study the geometry of spacelike surfaces in a 4-dimensional spacetime with the help of double null coordinate systems. T…
We explore some fundational issues regarding the splitting of D-dimensional EFE's w.r.t timelike and spacelike (D-1)-dimensional hypersurfaces, first without and then with thin matter sheets such as branes. We begin to implement methodology, that is well-established for the GR CP and IVP, in the new field of GR-based braneworlds, identifying and comparing many different choices of procedure. We abridge fragmentary parts of the literature of embeddings, putting the Campbell--Magaard theorem into context. We recollect and refine arguments why York and not elimination methods are used for the GR …
Let $\mathcal{H}$ denote the future outgoing null hypersurface emanating from a spacelike 2-sphere $S$ in a vacuum spacetime $(\mathcal{M},\mathbf{g})$. In this paper we study the so-called canonical foliation on $\mathcal{H}$ introduced by Klainerman and Nicolò and show that the corresponding geometry is controlled locally only in terms of the initial geometry on $S$ and the $L^2$ curvature flux through $\mathcal{H}$. In particular, we show that the ingoing and outgoing null expansions $\mathrm{tr} χ$ and $\mathrm{tr} \underlineχ$ are both locally uniformly bounded. The proof of our estimates…
We solve the spacelike, spherically symmetric, constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in the maximally extended Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime with the charge smaller than the mass. Based on these results, we construct constant mean curvature foliations with fixed or varied mean curvature in each slice in this spacetime.
We construct a $T$-axisymmetric, spacelike, spherically symmetric, constant mean curvature hypersurfaces foliation in the Kruskal extension with properties that the mean curvature varies in each slice and ranges from minus infinity to plus infinity. This family of hypersurfaces extends the CMC foliation discussions posted by Malec and Ó Murchadha in 2009.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of the Dirichlet problem for spacelike, spherically symmetric, constant mean curvature equation with symmetric boundary data in the extended Schwarzschild spacetime. As an application, we completely solve the CMC foliation conjecture which is posted by Malec and O Murchadha in 2003.
In this paper, we generalize the defining equation for de Sitter space by replacing the de Sitter radius with a function $f$ satisfying certain conditions; each resulting hypersurface is diffeomorphic to de Sitter space, and has a geometry (and causal character) which is controlled by the choice of $f$. Necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for a hypersurface to be timelike, null, or spacelike in the generalized model; in the non-null case, the geometry is given by a warped product. Several examples of timelike, null, and spacelike hypersurfaces are presented. Lastly, we calculate t…
We consider spacetimes with compact Cauchy hypersurfaces and with Ricci tensor bounded from below on the set of timelike unit vectors, and prove that the results known for spacetimes satisfying the timelike convergence condition, namely, foliation by CMC hypersurfaces, are also valid in the present situation, if corresponding further assumptions are satisfied. In addition we show that the volume of any sequence of spacelike hypersurfaces, which run into the future singularity, decays to zero provided there exists a time function covering a future end, such that the level hypersurfaces have non…
