Recently, a new strategy to the reconstruction of $f(R)$-gravity models based on the Raychaudhuri equation has been suggested by Choudhury et al. In this paper, utilizing this method, the reconstruction of anisotropic Einstein-Maxwell equation in the $1+3$ covariant formalism of $f(R)$-gravity is investigated in four modes: $i.$ Reconstruction from a negative constant deceleration parameter refereeing to an ever-accelerating universe; $ii.$ Reconstruction from a constant jerk parameter $j=1$ which recovers celebrated $Λ\text{CDM}$ mode of evolution; $iii.$ Reconstruction from a variable jerk parameter $j=Q(t)$; and $iv.$ Reconstruction from a slowly varying jerk parameter. Furthermore, two suggestions for enhancing the method are proposed.
There is ongoing interest in adopting various tools and ideas from general relativity for optical applications and the study of light propagation through natural or engineered media. Here, the covariant kinematics of light propagating through arbitrary dielectric media in curved space-times are derived, allowing for analysis and tracing of congruences of light through media that may smoothly vary in character between vacuum, positively refracting, and negatively refracting; or null, timelike, and spacelike with respect to the background metric. The kinematics are then used to generalize the Ra…
We studied the Raychaudhuri equation in Kaluza-Klein space-time. We derived an additional term that is solely due to Kaluza-Klein's unification. This term affects the defocus of world lines near the singularity of charged higher-dimensional black holes. We illustrated it with a static higher-dimensional black hole generated by Einstein-Maxwell equations. It has been found that the term derived modifies the repulsive effect of kaluza Klein scalar on world lines. We proved some mathematical theorems which give an insight into the interior of the black holes.
We show that the covariant Raychaudhuri identity describing kinematic characteristics of space-time admits a representation involving a geometrical scalar $ξ$ which, depending on circumstances, might be related to, e.g., relativistic temperature or cosmological scalar field. With an appropriately chosen spacetime deformation tensor (fixing the symmetry of a problem under consideration), such scalarization opens a wide scope for physical applications. We consider few such applications including dynamics of cosmological (anti)scalar background, non-variational deduction of the field equations, s…

We explore the relationship between the effective dynamics in standard loop quantum cosmology (LQC) based on holonomies and triads obtained from gauge-fixing fluxes, and a modification of LQC based on holonomies and gauge-covariant fluxes (referred to as gLQC). Both the models yield singularity resolution via a bounce because of non-perturbative quantum geometric effects resulting in a maximum for energy density. In LQC, the bounce is extremely well captured by a $ρ^2$ term in energy density with a negative sign which emerges as a non-perturbative modification to the classical Friedmann and Ra…
We use the Raychaudhuri equation to probe certain aspects related to the gravitational collapse of a charged medium. The aim is to identify the stresses the Maxwell field exerts on the fluid and discuss their potential implications. Particular attention is given to those stresses that resist contraction. After looking at the general case, we consider the two opposite limits of poor and high electrical conductivity. In the former there are electric fields but no currents, while in the latter the situation is reversed. When the conductivity is low, we find that the main agents acting against the…
We introduce and develop the 1+3 covariant approach to relativity and cosmology to spacetimes of arbitrary dimensions that have nonzero torsion and do not satisfy the metricity condition. Focusing on timelike observers, we identify and discuss the main differences between their kinematics and those of their counterparts living in standard Riemannian spacetimes. At the centre of our analysis lies the Raychaudhuri equation, which is the fundamental formula monitoring the convergence/divergence, namely the collapse/expansion, of timelike worldline congruences. To the best of our knowledge, we pro…
In this article, we quantize the Maxwell ("massless spin one") de Sitter field in a conformally invariant gauge. This quantization is invariant under the SO$_0(2,4)$ group and consequently under the de Sitter group. We obtain a new de Sitter invariant two-points function which is very simple. Our method relies on the one hand on a geometrical point of view which uses the realization of Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spaces as intersections of the null cone in $\setR^6$ and a moving plane, and on the other hand on a canonical quantization scheme of the Gupta-Bleuler type.
Quantum field theory in curved spacetime may be defined either through a manifestly unitary canonical approach or via the manifestly covariant path integral formalism. For gauge theories, these two approaches have produced conflicting results, leading to the question of whether the canonical approach is covariant, and whether the path integral approach is unitary. We show the unitarity of the covariant U(1) Maxwell theory, defined via the Wick rotation of a Euclidean path integral. We begin by gauge-fixing the path integral, taking care with zero modes, large gauge transformations, and nontriv…
We develop a hydrodynamic representation of the Klein-Gordon-Maxwell-Einstein equations. These equations combine quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and general relativity. We consider the case of an arbitrary curved spacetime, the case of weak gravitational fields in a static or expanding background, and the nonrelativistic (Newtonian) limit. The Klein-Gordon-Maxwell-Einstein equations govern the evolution of a complex scalar field, possibly describing self-gravitating Bose-Einstein condensates, coupled to an electromagnetic field. They may find applications in the context of dark matter, bo…
In the recent decades, it became more and more popular for engineers, physicists, and mathematicians alike to put the Maxwell equations into a generally covariant form. This is particularly useful for understanding the fundamental structure of electrodynamics (conservation of electric charge and magnetic flux). Moreover, it is ideally suited for applying it to media with local (and mainly linear) response behavior. We try to collect the new knowledge that grew out of this development. We would like to ask the participants of EMTS 2016 to inform us of work that we may have overlooked in our rev…
Time-independent gauge transformations are implemented in the canonical formalism by the Gauss law which is not covariant. The covariant form of Gauss law is conceptually important for studying asymptotic properties of the gauge fields. For QED in $3+1$ dimensions, we have developed a formalism for treating the equations of motion (EOM) themselves as constraints, that is, constraints on states using Peierls' quantization. They generate spacetime dependent gauge transformations. We extend these results to the Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) Lagrangian. The surprising result is that the covariant Gau…
We derive source-free Maxwell-like equations in flat spacetime for any helicity "j" by comparing the transformation properties of the 2(2j+1) states that carry the manifestly covariant representations of the inhomogeneous Lorentz group with the transformation properties of the two helicity "j" states that carry the irreducible representations of this group. The set of constraints so derived involves a pair of curl equations and a pair of divergence equations. These reduce to the free-field Maxwell equations for j=1 and the analogous equations coupling the gravito-electric and the gravito-magne…
Although the entropy of black holes in any diffeomorphism invariant theory of gravity can be expressed as the Wald entropy, the issue of whether the entropy always obeys the second law of black hole thermodynamics remains open. Since the nonminimal coupling interaction between gravity and the electromagnetic field in the general quadric corrected Einstein-Maxwell gravity can sufficiently influence the expression of the Wald entropy, we check whether the Wald entropy of black holes in the quadric corrected gravity still satisfies the second law. A quasistationary accreting process of black hole…
In this work we take a formal approach to the problem of decoupling Proca equations in curved space-times. We use Newman-Penrose (NP) two-spinor formalism to represent the Proca vector by one complex and two real scalars. We show that a decoupled second order differential equation for one of the real scalars can be derived if and only if the background space-time admits a covariantly constant null vector. Thus, the background space-time must be a pp-wave vacuum. We evaluate the separability of Proca, Maxwell and Dirac equations on the resulting pp-wave background.
We show that the main properties of the fracton quasiparticles can be derived from a generalized covariant Maxwell-like action. Starting from a rank-2 symmetric tensor field $A_{μν}(x)$, we build a partially symmetric rank-3 tensor field strength $F_{μνρ}(x)$ which obeys a kind of Bianchi identity. The most general action invariant under the covariant ``fracton'' transformation $δ_{fract}A_{μν}(x)=\partial_μ\partial_νΛ(x)$ consists of two independent terms: one describing Linearized Gravity (LG) and the other referable to fractons. The whole action can be written in terms of $F_{μνρ}(x)$, and …
In this paper the macroscopic Einstein and Maxwell equations for system, in which the electromagnetic interactions are dominating (for instance, the cosmological plasma before the moment of recombination), are derived. Ensemble averaging of the microscopic Einstein - Maxwell equations and the iouville equations for the random functions leads to a closed system of macroscopic Einstein - Maxwell equations and kinetic equations for one-particle distribution functions. The macroscopic Einstein equations for a relativistic plasma differ from the classical Einstein equations in that their left-hand …
We study cosmological density fluctuations within a covariant and gauge-invariant fluid-flow approach for a perfect fluid in the Einstein-Cartan gravity and derive the corresponding Raychaudhuri type of inhomogeneous coupled differential evolution equations of the second order. It appears that the quantum fluctuations of spin trigger primordial density inhomogeneities at the scale of weak interactions. These inhomogeneities are then evolved precisely to the value measured be COBE mission at the scale of decoupling.
The actions for bosonic fields typically contain terms quadratic in the derivatives of the fields. This is not the case in the Palatini approach to general relativity. The action does not contain any derivatives of the metric and it only contains terms linear in the derivatives of the connection. In general relativity the covariant derivative of the metric vanishes, so it is not possible to include such terms in the action. However, in more general theories this is not the case. In this paper I consider an action which is quadratic in the derivatives of the metric and connection and show that …
A generally covariant four-dimensional representation of Maxwell's electrodynamics in a generic material medium can be achieved straightforwardly in the metric-free formulation of electromagnetism. In this setup, the electromagnetic phenomena described by two tensor fields, which satisfy Maxwell's equations. A generic tensorial constitutive relation between these fields is an independent ingredient of the theory. By use of different constitutive relations (local and non-local, linear and non-linear, etc.), a wide area of applications can be covered. In the current paper, we present the jump co…
The main purpose of this contribution is to determine physical and geometrical characterizations of whole classes of stationary cyclic symmetric gravitational fields coupled to Maxwell electromagnetic fields within the $(2+1)$-dimensional gravity. The physical characterization is based on the determination of the local and global energy-momentum-mass quantities using the Brown-York approach. As far as to the algebraic-geometrical characterization is concerned, the eigenvalue problem for the electromagnetic field, energy-momentum and Cotton tensors is solved and their types are established. The…
Local continuity equations involving background fields and variantions of the fields, are obtained for a restricted class of solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell and Einstein-Weyl theories using a new approach based on the concept of the adjoint of a differential operator. Such covariant conservation laws are generated by means of decoupled equations and their adjoints in such a way that the corresponding covariantly conserved currents possess some gauge-invariant properties and are expressed in terms of Debye potentials. These continuity laws lead to both a covariant description of bilinear form…
We focus on the method recently proposed by Lunin and Frolov-Krtouš-Kubizňák to solve the Maxwell equation on the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime by separation of variables. In their method, it is crucial that the background spacetime has hidden symmetries because they generate commuting symmetry operators with which the separation of variables can be achieved. In this work we reproduce these commuting symmetry operators in a covariant fashion. We first review the procedure known as the Eisenhart-Duval lift to construct commuting symmetry operators for given equations of motion. Then we apply this pr…
We extend the Einstein-aether theory to include the Maxwell field in a nontrivial manner by taking into account its interaction with the time-like unit vector field characterizing the aether. We also include a generic matter term. We present a model with a Lagrangian that includes cross-terms linear and quadratic in the Maxwell tensor, linear and quadratic in the covariant derivative of the aether velocity four-vector, linear in its second covariant derivative and in the Riemann tensor. We decompose these terms with respect to the irreducible parts of the covariant derivative of the aether vel…
We study scalar field and electromagnetic perturbations on Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) class II spacetimes, exploiting a recently developed covariant and gauge-invariant perturbation formalism. From the Klein-Gordon equation and Maxwell's equations, respectively, we derive covariant and gauge-invariant wave equations for the perturbation variables and thereby find the generalised Regge-Wheeler equations for these LRS class II spacetime perturbations. As illustrative examples, the results are discussed in detail for the Schwarzschild and Vaidya spacetime, and briefly for some classes o…
The well-known discrepancies between covariant and non-covariant formalisms in quantum field theory and quantum cosmology are analyzed by focusing on the Coulomb gauge for vacuum Maxwell theory. On studying a flat Euclidean background with boundaries, the corresponding mode-by-mode analysis of one-loop quantum amplitudes agrees with the results of the Schwinger-DeWitt technique and of mode-by-mode calculations in relativistic gauges.
A new method for separating variables in Maxwell's equations in four- and higher-dimensional Kerr-(A)dS spacetimes proposed recently by Lunin is generalized to any off-shell metric that admits a principal Killing-Yano tensor. The key observation is that Lunin's ansatz for the vector potential can be formulated in a covariant form - in terms of the principal tensor. In particular, focusing on the four-dimensional case we demonstrate separability of Maxwell's equations in the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS and the Plebanski-Demianski family of spacetimes. The new method of separation of variables is quite diffe…
In this work we take into consideration a generalization of Gauge Theories based on the analysis of the structural characteristics of Maxwell theory, which can be considered as the prototype of such kind of theories (Maxwell-like). Such class of theories is based on few principles related to different orders of commutators between covariant derivatives. Their physical meaning is very simple, and lies in stating that the local transformations of a suitable substratum (the space-time or a particular phase space) and the imposed constraints define a "compensative mechanism" or the "interaction" w…
We study propagation of high-frequency electromagnetic waves in a curved spacetime. We demonstrate how a modification of the standard geometric optics allows one to include the helicity dependent corrections into the equations of motion of circularly polarized beams of radiation. As a result, polarized light rays are still null but not geodesic curves. To achieve these results we construct null frames associated with a set of (non-geodesic) null rays and use these frames for description of the high-frequency wave propagation. We call this approach spin optics approximation. It is completely co…
Using the solution phase space method, we investigate the thermodynamics of black holes in Einstein-aether-Maxwell theory, for which the traditional Wald method (covariant phase space method) fails. We show the first laws of thermodynamics and definitive entropy expressions at both Killing and universal horizons for some examples of exact black hole solutions, including 3-dimensional static charged quasi-BTZ black hole, two 4-dimensional static charged black holes and 3-dimensional rotating solution. At Killing horizons the entropies are exactly one quarter of the horizon area, but at universa…
We classify super-symmetric solutions of the minimal $N=2$ gauged Euclidean supergravity in four dimensions. The solutions with anti-self-dual Maxwell field give rise to anti-self-dual Einstein metrics given in terms of solutions to the $SU(\infty)$ Toda equation and more general three-dimensional Einstein--Weyl structures. Euclidean Kastor--Traschen metrics are also characterised by the existence of a certain super covariantly constant spinor.
Is change missing in Hamiltonian Einstein-Maxwell theory? Given the most common definition of observables (having weakly vanishing Poisson bracket with each first-class constraint), observables are constants of the motion and nonlocal. Unfortunately this definition also implies that the observables for massive electromagnetism with gauge freedom (Stueckelberg) are inequivalent to those of massive electromagnetism without gauge freedom (Proca). The alternative Pons-Salisbury-Sundermeyer definition of observables, aiming for Hamiltonian-Lagrangian equivalence, uses the gauge generator G, a tuned…
We use dimensional regularization to compute the one loop quantum gravitational contribution to the vacuum polarization on flat space background. Adding the appropriate BPHZ counterterm gives a fully renormalized result which we employ to quantum correct Maxwell's equations. These equations are solved to show that dynamical photons are unchanged, provided the free state wave functional is appropriately corrected. The response to the instantaneous appearance of a point dipole reveals a perturbative version of the long-conjectured, "smearing of the light-cone". There is no change in the far radi…
We show that the general solution of Chong, Cvetic, Lu and Pope for nonextremal rotating charged black holes in five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity, or equivalently in the Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with a negative cosmological constant and with the Chern-Simons coefficient $ ν=1 $, admits a simple description in a Kerr-Schild type framework with two scalar functions. Next, assuming this framework as an ansatz, we obtain new analytic solutions for slowly rotating charged black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with $ ν\neq 1 .$ Using a covariant superpotentia…
We develop and apply a fully covariant 1+3 electromagnetic analogy for gravity. The free gravitational field is covariantly characterized by the Weyl gravito-electric and gravito-magnetic spatial tensor fields, whose dynamical equations are the Bianchi identities. Using a covariant generalization of spatial vector algebra and calculus to spatial tensor fields, we exhibit the covariant analogy between the tensor Bianchi equations and the vector Maxwell equations. We identify gravitational source terms, couplings and potentials with and without electromagnetic analogues. The nonlinear vacuum Bia…
We investigate puncture statistics based on the covariant area spectrum in loop quantum gravity. First, we consider Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics with a Gibbs factor for punctures. We establish formulae which relate physical quantities such as horizon area to the parameter characterizing holographic degrees of freedom. We also perform numerical calculations and obtain consistency with these formulae. These results tell us that the holographic bound is satisfied in the large area limit and correction term of the entropy-area law can be proportional to the logarithm of the horizon area. Second, w…
In this thesis the generally covariant locality principle for bosonic free fields has been thoroughly analyzed devoting particular attention to the case of spin 1 fields on curved spacetimes (Proca and Maxwell fields). This has been obtained in two steps: In the first place the preliminary study of the corresponding field equations led to the construction of a symplectic space of solutions describing the classical theories of the considered fields. Secondly the locally covariant quantum theory of the field under consideration has been obtained through the assignment of the Weyl algebra associa…
By embedding Einstein's original formulation of GR into a broader context we show that a dynamic covariant description of gravitational stress-energy emerges naturally from a variational principle. A tensor $T^G$ is constructed from a contraction of the Bel tensor with a symmetric covariant second degree tensor field $Φ$ and has a form analogous to the stress-energy tensor of the Maxwell field in an arbitrary space-time. For plane-fronted gravitational waves helicity-2 polarised (graviton) states can be identified carrying non-zero energy and momentum.
We show how the Weyl anomaly generated by gauge fields, can be computed from manifestly gauge invariant and diffeomorphism invariant exact renormalization group equations, without having to fix the gauge at any stage. Regularisation is provided by covariant higher derivatives and by embedding the Maxwell field into a spontaneously broken $U(1|1)$ supergauge theory. We first provide a realisation that leaves behind two versions of the original $U(1)$ gauge field, and then construct a manifestly $U(1|1)$ supergauge invariant flow equation which leaves behind only the original Maxwell field in th…
We explicitly prove that the Weyl conformal symmetry solves the black hole singularity problem, otherwise unavoidable in a generally covariant local or non-local gravitational theory. Moreover, we yield explicit examples of local and non-local theories enjoying Weyl and diffeomorphism symmetry (in short co-covariant theories). Following the seminal paper by Narlikar and Kembhavi, we provide an explicit construction of singularity-free spherically symmetric and axi-symmetric exact solutions for black hole spacetimes conformally equivalent to the Schwarzschild or the Kerr spacetime. We first che…
