The zero-error channel capacity is the maximum asymptotic rate that can be reached with error probability exactly zero, instead of a vanishing error probability. The nature of this problem, essentially combinatorial rather than probabilistic, has led to various researches both in Information Theory and Combinatorics. However, the zero-error capacity is still an open problem, for example the capacity of the noisy-typewriter channel with 7 letters is unknown. In this article, we propose a new approach to construct optimal zero-error codes, based on the concatenation of words of variable-length, taken from a generator set. Three zero-error variable-length coding schemes, referred to as "variable-length coding", "intermingled coding" and "automata-based coding", are under study. We characterize their asymptotic performances via linear difference equations, in terms of simple properties of the generator set, e.g. the roots of the characteristic polynomial, the spectral radius of an adjacency matrix, the inverse of the convergence radius of a generator series. For a specific example, we construct an "intermingled" coding scheme that achieves asymptotically the zero-error capacity.
Unary coding has found applications in data compression, neural network training, and in explaining the production mechanism of birdsong. Unary coding is redundant; therefore it should have inherent error correction capacity. An expression for the error correction capability of unary coding for the correction of single errors has been derived in this paper.
The distributed index coding problem is studied, whereby multiple messages are stored at different servers to be broadcast to receivers with side information. First, the existing composite coding scheme is enhanced for the centralized (single-server) index coding problem, which is then merged with fractional partitioning of servers to yield a new coding scheme for distributed index coding. New outer bounds on the capacity region are also established. For 213 out of 218 non-isomorphic distributed index coding problems with four messages the achievable sum-rate of the proposed distributed compos…
The index coding problem studies the fundamental limit on broadcasting multiple messages to their respective receivers with different sets of side information that are represented by a directed graph. The generalized lexicographic product structure in the side information graph is introduced as a natural condition under which the corresponding index coding problem can be decomposed into multiple interacting subproblems. The capacity region is characterized in terms of the subproblem capacity regions combined in the same product structure. The proof is based on dual uses of random coding---one …
The capacity region of the index coding problem is characterized through the notion of confusion graph and its fractional chromatic number. Based on this multiletter characterization, several structural properties of the capacity region are established, some of which are already noted by Tahmasbi, Shahrasbi, and Gohari, but proved here with simple and more direct graph-theoretic arguments. In particular, the capacity region of a given index coding problem is shown to be simple functionals of the capacity regions of smaller subproblems when the interaction between the subproblems is none, one-w…
We study the index coding problem in the presence of an eavesdropper, where the aim is to communicate without allowing the eavesdropper to learn any single message aside from the messages it may already know as side information. We establish an outer bound on the underlying secure capacity region of the index coding problem, which includes polymatroidal and security constraints, as well as the set of additional decoding constraints for legitimate receivers. We then propose a secure variant of the composite coding scheme, which yields an inner bound on the secure capacity region of the index co…
The Ising channel, which was introduced in 1990, is a channel with memory that models Inter-Symbol interference. In this paper we consider the Ising channel with feedback and find the capacity of the channel together with a capacity-achieving coding scheme. To calculate the channel capacity, an equivalent dynamic programming (DP) problem is formulated and solved. Using the DP solution, we establish that the feedback capacity is the expression $C=(\frac{2H_b(a)}{3+a})\approx 0.575522$ where $a$ is a particular root of a fourth-degree polynomial and $H_b(x)$ denotes the binary entropy function. …
A new inner bound on the capacity region of a general index coding problem is established. Unlike most existing bounds that are based on graph theoretic or algebraic tools, the bound is built on a random coding scheme and optimal decoding, and has a simple polymatroidal single-letter expression. The utility of the inner bound is demonstrated by examples that include the capacity region for all index coding problems with up to five messages (there are 9846 nonisomorphic ones).
Starting from Shannon's celebrated 1948 channel coding theorem, we trace the evolution of channel coding from Hamming codes to capacity-approaching codes. We focus on the contributions that have led to the most significant improvements in performance vs. complexity for practical applications, particularly on the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. We discuss algebraic block codes, and why they did not prove to be the way to get to the Shannon limit. We trace the antecedents of today's capacity-approaching codes: convolutional codes, concatenated codes, and other probabilistic coding …
In this paper, we study network coding capacity for random wireless networks. Previous work on network coding capacity for wired and wireless networks have focused on the case where the capacities of links in the network are independent. In this paper, we consider a more realistic model, where wireless networks are modeled by random geometric graphs with interference and noise. In this model, the capacities of links are not independent. We consider two scenarios, single source multiple destinations and multiple sources multiple destinations. In the first scenario, employing coupling and martin…
The paper provides a new perspective on peak- and average-constrained Gaussian channels. Such channels model optical wireless communication (OWC) systems which employ intensity-modulation with direct detection (IM/DD). First, the paper proposes a new, capacity-preserving vector binary channel (VBC) model, consisting of dependent binary noisy bit-pipes. Then, to simplify coding over this VBC, the paper proposes coding schemes with varying levels of complexity, building on the capacity of binary-symmetric channels (BSC) and channels with state. The achievable rates are compared to capacity and c…
Low-capacity scenarios have become increasingly important in the technology of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the next generation of wireless networks. Such scenarios require efficient and reliable transmission over channels with an extremely small capacity. Within these constraints, the state-of-the-art coding techniques may not be directly applicable. Moreover, the prior work on the finite-length analysis of optimal channel coding provides inaccurate predictions of the limits in the low-capacity regime. In this paper, we study channel coding at low capacity from two perspectives: fundament…
Arıkan's polar coding, is by now a well studied technique that allows achieving the symmetric capacity of binary input memoryless channels with low complexity encoding and decoding, provided that the polar decoding architecture is used and the decoding metric is matched to the true channel. In this paper, we analyze communication rates that are achievable when the polar coding/decoding architecture is used with the decoder using an incorrect model of the channel. We define the `polar mismatched capacity' as an analogue of the classical mismatched capacity, give an expression for it, and derive…
We consider the problem of multicasting information from a source to a set of receivers over a network where intermediate network nodes perform randomized network coding operations on the source packets. We propose a channel model for the non-coherent network coding introduced by Koetter and Kschischang in [6], that captures the essence of such a network operation, and calculate the capacity as a function of network parameters. We prove that use of subspace coding is optimal, and show that, in some cases, the capacity-achieving distribution uses subspaces of several dimensions, where the emplo…
One fundamental problem in the field of network coding is to determine the network coding capacity of networks under various network coding schemes. In this thesis, we address the problem with two approaches: matroidal networks and capacity regions. In our matroidal approach, we prove the converse of the theorem which states that, if a network is scalar-linearly solvable then it is a matroidal network associated with a representable matroid over a finite field. As a consequence, we obtain a correspondence between scalar-linearly solvable networks and representable matroids over finite fields i…
For a discrete memoryless channel with non-causal state information available only at the encoder, it is well-known that Gelfand-Pinsker coding achieves its capacity. In this paper, we analyze Gelfand-Pinsker coding scheme and capacity to bring out further understandings. We show that Gelfand-Pinsker capacity is equal to the interference-free capacity. Thus the capacity of a channel with non-causal state information available only at the encoder is the same as if the state information is also available at the decoder. Furthermore, the capacity-achieving conditional input distributions in these…
In this paper, we consider noncoherent random linear coding networks (RLCNs) as a discrete memoryless channel (DMC) whose input and output alphabets consist of subspaces. This contrasts with previous channel models in the literature which assume matrices as the channel input and output. No particular assumptions are made on the network topology or the transfer matrix, except that the latter may be rank-deficient according to some rank deficiency probability distribution. We introduce a random vector basis selection procedure which renders the DMC symmetric. The capacity we derive can be seen a…
In this paper, we use entropy functions to characterise the set of rate-capacity tuples achievable with either zero decoding error, or vanishing decoding error, for general network coding problems. We show that when sources are colocated, the outer bound obtained by Yeung, A First Course in Information Theory, Section 15.5 (2002) is tight and the sets of zero-error achievable and vanishing-error achievable rate-capacity tuples are the same. We also characterise the set of zero-error and vanishing-error achievable rate capacity tuples for network coding problems subject to linear encoding const…
A combinatorial framework for adversarial network coding is presented. Channels are described by specifying the possible actions that one or more (possibly coordinated) adversaries may take. Upper bounds on three notions of capacity (the one-shot capacity, the zero-error capacity, and the compound zero-error capacity) are obtained for point-to-point channels, and generalized to corresponding capacity regions appropriate for multi-source networks. A key result of this paper is a general method by which bounds on these capacities in point-to-point channels may be ported to networks. This techniq…
We construct a channel coding scheme to achieve the capacity of any discrete memoryless channel based solely on the techniques of polar coding. In particular, we show how source polarization and randomness extraction via polarization can be employed to "shape" uniformly-distributed i.i.d. random variables into approximate i.i.d. random variables distributed ac- cording to the capacity-achieving distribution. We then combine this shaper with a variant of polar channel coding, constructed by the duality with source coding, to achieve the channel capacity. Our scheme inherits the low complexity e…
We propose a computationally efficient multilevel coding scheme to achieve the capacity of an ISI channel using layers of binary inputs. The transmitter employs multilevel coding with linear mapping. The receiver uses multistage decoding where each stage performs a separate linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) equalization and decoding. The optimality of the scheme is due to the fact that the LMMSE equalizer is information lossless in an ISI channel when signal to noise ratio is sufficiently low. The computational complexity is low and scales linearly with the length of the channel impulse…
A general method of coding over expansions is proposed, which allows one to reduce the highly non-trivial problem of coding over continuous channels to a much simpler discrete ones. More specifically, the focus is on the additive exponential noise (AEN) channel, for which the (binary) expansion of the (exponential) noise random variable is considered. It is shown that each of the random variables in the expansion corresponds to independent Bernoulli random variables. Thus, each of the expansion levels (of the underlying channel) corresponds to a binary symmetric channel (BSC), and the coding p…
Explicit characterization and computation of the multi-source network coding capacity region (or even bounds) is long standing open problem. In fact, finding the capacity region requires determination of the set of all entropic vectors $Γ^{*}$, which is known to be an extremely hard problem. On the other hand, calculating the explicitly known linear programming bound is very hard in practice due to an exponential growth in complexity as a function of network size. We give a new, easily computable outer bound, based on characterization of all functional dependencies in networks. We also show th…
In this paper, a general binary-input binary-output (BIBO) channel is investigated in the presence of feedback and input constraints. The feedback capacity and the optimal input distribution of this setting are calculated for the case of an $(1,\infty)$-RLL input constraint, that is, the input sequence contains no consecutive ones. These results are obtained via explicit solution of a corresponding dynamic programming optimization problem. A simple coding scheme is designed based on the principle of posterior matching, which was introduced by Shayevitz and Feder for memoryless channels. The po…
In ALOHA-type packetized network, the transmission times of packets follow a stochastic process. In this paper, we advocate a deterministic approach for channel multiple-access. Each user is statically assigned a periodic protocol signal, which takes value either zero or one, and transmit packets whenever the value of the protocol signal is equal to one. On top of this multiple-access protocol, efficient channel coding and network coding schemes are devised. We illustrate the idea by constructing a transmission scheme for the tandem collision network, for both slot-synchronous and slot-asynchr…
In this paper, we study the effect of a single link on the capacity of a network of error-free bit pipes. More precisely, we study the change in network capacity that results when we remove a single link of capacity $δ$. In a recent result, we proved that if all the sources are directly available to a single super-source node, then removing a link of capacity $δ$ cannot change the capacity region of the network by more than $δ$ in each dimension. In this paper, we extend this result to the case of multi-source, multi-sink networks for some special network topologies.
One of the main theoretical motivations for the emerging area of network coding is the achievability of the max-flow/min-cut rate for single source multicast. This can exceed the rate achievable with routing alone, and is achievable with linear network codes. The multi-source problem is more complicated. Computation of its capacity region is equivalent to determination of the set of all entropy functions $Γ^*$, which is non-polyhedral. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that this difficulty can arise even in single source problems. In particular, for single source networks with hierarchic…
In this paper, we study the capacity region of the general distributed index coding. In contrast to the traditional centralized index coding where a single server contains all $n$ messages requested by the receivers, in the distributed index coding there are $2^n-1$ servers, each containing a unique non-empty subset $J$ of the messages and each is connected to all receivers via a noiseless independent broadcast link with an arbitrary capacity $C_J \ge 0$. First, we generalize the existing polymatroidal outer bound on the capacity region of the centralized problem to the distributed case. Next,…
This letter investigates the role of index coding in the capacity of AWGN broadcast channels with receiver message side information. We first show that index coding is unnecessary where there are two receivers; multiplexing coding and superposition coding are sufficient to achieve the capacity region. We next show that, for more than two receivers, multiplexing coding and superposition coding alone can be suboptimal. We give an example where these two coding schemes alone cannot achieve the capacity region, but adding index coding can. This demonstrates that, in contrast to the two-receiver ca…
In this paper, we study the capacity of the two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) linear deterministic interference channel (IC), with possible correlations within/between the channel matrices. The capacity region is characterized in terms of the rank of the channel matrices. It is shown that \emph{linear precoding} with Han-Kobayashi type of rate-splitting, i.e., splitting the information-bearing symbols of each user into common and private parts, is sufficient to achieve all the rate pairs in the derived capacity region. The capacity result is applied to obtain an achievable rate re…
Due to the redundant nature of DNA synthesis and sequencing technologies, a basic model for a DNA storage system is a multi-draw "shuffling-sampling" channel. In this model, a random number of noisy copies of each sequence is observed at the channel output. Recent works have characterized the capacity of such a DNA storage channel under different noise and sequencing models, relying on sophisticated typicality-based approaches for the achievability. Here, we consider a multi-draw DNA storage channel in the setting of noise corruption by a binary erasure channel. We show that, in this setting, …
This paper considers the memoryless input-constrained binary erasure channel (BEC). The channel input constraint is the $(d,\infty)$-runlength limited (RLL) constraint, which mandates that any pair of successive $1$s in the input sequence be separated by at least $d$ $0$s. We consider a scenario where there is causal, noiseless feedback from the decoder. We demonstrate a simple, labelling-based, zero-error feedback coding scheme, which we prove to be feedback capacity-achieving, and, as a by-product, obtain an explicit characterization of the feedback capacity. Our proof is based on showing th…
In this paper, we propose an approach to numerically compute the feedback capacity of stationary finite dimensional Gaussian channels and construct (arbitrarily close to) capacity-achieving feedback codes. In particular, we first extend the interpretation of feedback communication over stationary finite dimensional Gaussian channels as feedback control systems by showing that, the problem of finding stabilizing feedback controllers with maximal reliable transmission rate over Youla parameters coincides with the problem of finding strictly causal filters to achieve feedback capacity derived in …
In this paper, we first propose an universal polar coding scheme for parallel Gaussian channels with non-binary inputs. It is assumed that the encoder knows only the sum capacity of M parallel channels instead of the capacity of any single channel. By decomposing each parallel channel into T = [log2r] sub channels, we therefore obtain MT binary sub-channels. A super polar coding scheme that across all sub-channels is then proposed. This scheme can achieve the sum capacity when the block length is sufficiently large. We have also discussed the applications of parallel polar coding design for bo…
It is known that a message can be transmitted safely against any wiretapper via a noisy channel without a secret key if the coding rate is less than the so-called secrecy capacity $C_S$, which is usually smaller than the channel capacity $C$. In order to remove the loss $C - C_S$, we propose a multiplex coding scheme with plural independent messages. In this paper, it is shown that the proposed multiplex coding scheme can attain the channel capacity as the total rate of the plural messages and the perfect secrecy for each message. The coding theorem is proved by extending Hayashi's proof, in w…
Cycles and Cliques in a side-information graph reduce the number of transmissions required in an index coding problem. Thapa, Ong and Johnson defined a more general form of overlapping cycles, called the interlinked-cycle (IC) structure, that generalizes cycles and cliques. They proposed a scheme, that leverages IC structures in digraphs to construct scalar linear index codes. In this paper, we extend the notion of interlinked cycle structure to define more generalised graph structures called overlapping interlinked cycle (OIC) structures. We prove the capacity of OIC structures by giving an i…
An interference alignment perspective is used to identify the simplest instances (minimum possible number of edges in the alignment graph, no more than 2 interfering messages at any destination) of index coding problems where non-Shannon information inequalities are necessary for capacity characterization. In particular, this includes the first known example of a multiple unicast (one destination per message) index coding problem where non-Shannon information inequalities are shown to be necessary. The simplest multiple unicast example has 7 edges in the alignment graph and 11 messages. The si…
In index coding, a server broadcasts multiple messages to their respective receivers, each with some side information that can be utilized to reduce the amount of communication from the server. Distributed index coding is an extension of index coding in which the messages are broadcast from multiple servers, each storing different subsets of the messages. In this paper, the optimal tradeoff among the message rates and the server broadcast rates, which is defined formally as the capacity region, is studied for a general distributed index coding problem. Inner and outer bounds on the capacity re…
Visible light communication (VLC) could provide short-range optical wireless communication together with illumination using LED lighting. However, conventional forward error correction (FEC) codes for reliable communication do not have the features for dimming support and flicker mitigation which are required in VLC for the main functionality of lighting. Therefore, auxiliary coding techniques are usually needed, which eventually reduce the coding efficiency and increase the complexity. In this paper, a polar codes-based FEC coding scheme for dimmable VLC is proposed to increase the coding eff…
Capacity formulas and random-coding exponents are derived for a generalized family of Gel'fand-Pinsker coding problems. These exponents yield asymptotic upper bounds on the achievable log probability of error. In our model, information is to be reliably transmitted through a noisy channel with finite input and output alphabets and random state sequence, and the channel is selected by a hypothetical adversary. Partial information about the state sequence is available to the encoder, adversary, and decoder. The design of the transmitter is subject to a cost constraint. Two families of channels a…
Recently, it has been shown that the max flow capacity can be achieved in a multicast network using network coding. In this paper, we propose and analyze a more realistic model for wireless random networks. We prove that the capacity of network coding for this model is concentrated around the expected value of its minimum cut. Furthermore, we establish upper and lower bounds for wireless nodes using Chernoff bound. Our experiments show that our theoretical predictions are well matched by simulation results.
A rateless coding scheme transmits incrementally more and more coded bits over an unknown channel until all the information bits are decoded reliably by the receiver. We propose a new rateless coding scheme based on polar codes, and we show that this scheme is capacity-achieving, i.e. its information rate is as good as the best code specifically designed for the unknown channel. Previous rateless coding schemes are designed for specific classes of channels such as AWGN channels, binary erasure channels, etc. but the proposed rateless coding scheme is capacity-achieving for broad classes of cha…
Motivated by applications in distributed storage, the storage capacity of a graph was recently defined to be the maximum amount of information that can be stored across the vertices of a graph such that the information at any vertex can be recovered from the information stored at the neighboring vertices. Computing the storage capacity is a fundamental problem in network coding and is related, or equivalent, to some well-studied problems such as index coding with side information and generalized guessing games. In this paper, we consider storage capacity as a natural information-theoretic anal…
This paper studies the transceiver design of the Gaussian two-pair two-way relay channel (TWRC), where two pairs of users exchange information through a common relay in a pairwise manner. Our main contribution is to show that the capacity of the Gaussian two-pair TWRC is achievable to within 1/2 bit for arbitrary channel conditions. In the proof, we develop a hybrid coding scheme involving Gaussian random coding, nested lattice coding, superposition coding, and network-coded decoding. Further, we present a message-reassembling strategy to decouple the coding design for the user-to-relay and re…
The capacity of private information retrieval (PIR) from databases coded using maximum distance separable (MDS) codes has been previously characterized by Banawan and Ulukus, where it was assumed that the messages are encoded and stored separably into the databases. This assumption was also usually taken in other related works in the literature, and this capacity is usually referred to as the MDS-PIR capacity colloquially. In this work, we considered the question if and when this capacity barrier can be broken through joint encoding and storing of the messages. Our main results are two classes…
We consider a model of communication via a fully quantum jammer channel with quantum jammer, quantum sender and quantum receiver, which we dub quantum arbitrarily varying channel (QAVC). Restricting to finite dimensional user and jammer systems, we show, using permutation symmetry and a de Finetti reduction, how the random coding capacity (classical and quantum) of the QAVC is reduced to the capacity of a naturally associated compound channel, which is obtained by restricting the jammer to i.i.d. input states. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the shared randomness required is at most logarithm…
A half-duplex wireless network with 6 lateral nodes, 3 transmitters and 3 receivers, and a central relay is considered. The transmitters wish to send information to their corresponding receivers via a two phase communication protocol. The receivers decode their desired messages by using side information and the signals received from the relay. We derive an outer bound on the capacity region of any two phase protocol as well as 3 achievable regions by employing different relaying strategies. In particular, we combine physical and network layer coding to take advantage of the interference at the…
In this paper, we propose a new coding scheme for symmetric Gaussian interference channels with feedback based on the ideas of time-varying coding schemes. The proposed scheme improves the Suh-Tse and Kramer inner bounds of the channel capacity for the cases of weak and not very strong interference. This improvement is more significant when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is not very high. It is shown theoretically and numerically that our coding scheme can outperform the Kramer code. In addition, the generalized degrees-of-freedom of our proposed coding scheme is equal to the Suh-Tse scheme i…
The multicast capacity of a directed network is closely related to the $s$-$t$ maximum flow, which is equal to the $s$-$t$ minimum cut capacity due to the max-flow min-cut theorem. If the topology of a network (or link capacities) is dynamically changing or have stochastic nature, it is not so trivial to predict statistical properties on the maximum flow. In this paper, we present a coding theoretic approach for evaluating the accumulate distribution of the minimum cut capacity of weighted random graphs. The main feature of our approach is to utilize the correspondence between the cut space of…
In this paper, we study the contribution of network coding (NC) in improving the multicast capacity of random wireless ad hoc networks when nodes are endowed with multi-packet transmission (MPT) and multi-packet reception (MPR) capabilities. We show that a per session throughput capacity of $Θ(nT^{3}(n))$, where $n$ is the total number of nodes and T(n) is the communication range, can be achieved as a tight bound when each session contains a constant number of sinks. Surprisingly, an identical order capacity can be achieved when nodes have only MPR and MPT capabilities. This result proves that…
For a class of graphs for which the Ramsey number $R(i,j)$ is upper bounded by $ci^aj^b$, for some constants $a,b,$ and $c$, it is shown that the clique covering scheme approximates the broadcast rate of every $n$-node index coding problem in the class within a multiplicative factor of $c^{\frac{1}{a+b+1}} n^{\frac{a+b}{a+b+1}}$ for every $n$. Using this theorem and some graph theoretic arguments, it is demonstrated that the broadcast rate of planar graphs, line graphs and fuzzy circular interval graphs is approximated by the clique covering scheme within a factor of $n^{\frac{2}{3}}$.
Channel coding over arbitrarily-permuted parallel channels was first studied by Willems et al. (2008). This paper introduces capacity-achieving polar coding schemes for arbitrarily-permuted parallel channels where the component channels are memoryless, binary-input and output-symmetric.
In this paper, we derive the capacity of the deterministic relay networks with relay messages. We consider a network which consists of five nodes, four of which can only communicate via the fifth one. However, the fifth node is not merely a relay as it may exchange private messages with the other network nodes. First, we develop an upper bound on the capacity region based on the notion of a single sided genie. In the course of the achievability proof, we also derive the deterministic capacity of a 4-user relay network (without private messages at the relay). The capacity achieving schemes use …
Previous work on network coding capacity for random wired and wireless networks have focused on the case where the capacities of links in the network are independent. In this paper, we consider a more realistic model, where wireless networks are modelled by random geometric graphs with interference and noise. In this model, the capacities of links are not independent. By employing coupling and martingale methods, we show that, under mild conditions, the network coding capacity for random wireless networks still exhibits a concentration behavior around the mean value of the minimum cut.
A single unicast index coding problem (SUICP) with symmetric neighboring interference (SNI) has equal number of $K$ messages and $K$ receivers, the $k$th receiver $R_{k}$ wanting the $k$th message $x_{k}$ and having the side-information $\mathcal{K}_{k}=(\mathcal{I}_{k} \cup x_{k})^c,$ where ${I}_k= \{x_{k-U},\dots,x_{k-2},x_{k-1}\}\cup\{x_{k+1}, x_{k+2},\dots,x_{k+D}\}$ is the interference with $D$ messages after and $U$ messages before its desired message. Maleki, Cadambe and Jafar obtained the capacity of this symmetric neighboring interference single unicast index coding problem (SNI-SUICP…
We give a complete characterization of the correlated random coding secrecy capacity of arbitrarily varying wiretap channels (AVWCs). We apply two alternative strong secrecy criteria, which both lead to the same multi-letter formula. The difference of these criteria lies in the treatment of correlated randomness, they coincide in the case of uncorrelated codes. On the basis of the derived formula, we show that the correlated random coding secrecy capacity is continuous as a function of the AVWC, in contrast to the discontinuous uncorrelated coding secrecy capacity. In the proof of the secrecy …
A general time-varying feedback coding scheme is proposed for $M$-user fully connected symmetric Gaussian interference channels. Based on the analysis of the general coding scheme, we prove a theorem which gives a criterion for designing good time-varying feedback codes for Gaussian interference channels. The proposed scheme improves the Suh-Tse and Kramer inner bounds of the channel capacity for the cases of weak and not very strong interference when $M=2$. This capacity improvement is more significant when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is not very high. In addition, our coding scheme can b…
Let (S1,i, S2,i), distributed according to i.i.d p(s1, s2), i = 1, 2, . . . be a memoryless, correlated partial side information sequence. In this work we study channel coding and source coding problems where the partial side information (S1, S2) is available at the encoder and the decoder, respectively, and, additionally, either the encoder's or the decoder's side information is increased by a limited-rate description of the other's partial side information. We derive six special cases of channel coding and source coding problems and we characterize the capacity and the rate-distortion functi…
We develop practical coding schemes for the cognitive overlay radios as modeled by the cognitive interference channel, a variation of the classical two user interference channel where one of the transmitters has knowledge of both messages. Inspired by information theoretical results, we develop a coding strategy for each of the three parameter regimes where capacity is known. A key feature of the capacity achieving schemes in these regimes is the joint decoding of both users' codewords, which we accomplish by performing a posteriori probability calculation over a combined trellis. The schemes …
We consider achieving the rates in the capacity region of a multi-level 3-receiver broadcast channel, in which the second receiver is degraded with respect to the first receiver, with degraded message sets. We propose a two-level chaining strategy based on polar codes that achieves the capacity region of the considered setting without time-sharing. We also look at a slight variation of this problem, where the first receiver only requires to decode its own private message and the other two receivers require to decode another private message common to them. We observe that the capacity region do…
