Complex magnetic orders in frustrated magnets may exhibit rich melting processes when the magnet is heated toward the paramagnetic phase. We show that one may tune such melting processes by quantum fluctuations. We consider a kagome lattice dipolar Ising model subject to transverse field and focus on the thermal transitions out of its magnetic ground state, which features a $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ magnetic unit cell. Our quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations suggest that, at weak transverse field, the $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ phase melts by way of an intermediate magnetic charge ordered phase where the lattice translation symmetry is restored while the time reversal symmetry remains broken. By contrast, at stronger transverse field, QMC simulations suggest the $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ phase melts through a floating Kosterlitz-Thouless phase. The two distinct melting processes are separated by either a multicritical point or a short line of first order phase transition.
Asymmetric destruction of the one-third magnetization plateau upon heating is found in the spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnets using the typical pure quantum state approach. The asymmetry originates from larger density of states of low-lying excited sates of $N_{\rm s}$ spin systems with magnetization $(1/3-2/N_{\rm s})$ than that of low-lying sates with magnetization $(1/3+2/N_{\rm s})$. The enhanced specific heat and entropy that reflect the larger density of states in the lower-field side of the plateau are detectable in candidate materials of the kagome antiferromagnets. We discuss…
When the constituent spins have an energetic preference to lie along an easy-axis, triangular and Kagome lattice antiferromagnets often develop long-range order that distinguishes the three sublattices of the underlying triangular Bravais lattice. In zero magnetic field, this three-sublattice order melts {\em either} in a two-step manner, {\em i.e.} via an intermediate phase with power-law three-sublattice order controlled by a temperature dependent exponent $η(T) \in (\frac{1}{9},\frac{1}{4})$, {\em or} via a transition in the three-state Potts universality class. Here, I predict that the uni…
Ever since the experiments which founded the field of highly frustrated magnetism, the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet has been the archetypical setting for the study of fluctuation induced exotic ordering. To this day the nature of its classical low-temperature state has remained a mystery: the non-linear nature of the fluctuations around the exponentially numerous harmonically degenerate ground states has not permitted a controlled theory, while its complex energy landscape has precluded numerical simulations at low temperature. Here we present an efficient Monte Carlo algorithm which remo…
Motivated by recent developments in magnetic materials, frustrated nanoarrays and cold atomic systems, we investigate the behaviour of dipolar spins on the frustrated two-dimensional kagome lattice. By combining the Luttinger-Tisza approach, numerical energy minimization, spin-wave analysis and parallel tempering Monte-Carlo, we study long-range ordering and finite-temperature phase transitions for a Hamiltonian containing both dipolar and nearest-neighbor interactions. For both weak and moderate dipolar interactions, the system enters a three-sublattice long-range ordered state, with each tri…
The weathervane modes of the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice constitute possibly the earliest and certainly the most celebrated example of a flat band of zero-energy excitations. Such modes arise from the underconstraint that has since become a defining criterion of strong geometrical frustration. We investigate the fate of this flat band when dipolar interactions are added. These change the nearest-neighbour model fundamentally as they remove the Heisenberg spin-rotational symmetry while also introducing a long- range component to the interaction. We explain how the…
Unconventional features of the magnetization curve at zero temperature such as plateaus or jumps are a hallmark of frustrated spin systems. Very little is known about their behavior at non-zero temperatures. Here we investigate the temperature dependence of the magnetization curve of the kagome lattice antiferromagnet in particular at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization for large lattice sizes of up to N=48 spins. We discuss the phenomenon of asymmetric melting and trace it back to a combined effect of unbalanced magnetization steps on either side of the investigated plateau as well as on the …
Using large scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations and dual vortex theory we analyze the ground state phase diagram of hard-core bosons on the kagome lattice with nearest neighbor repulsion. In contrast to the case of a triangular lattice, no supersolid emerges for strong interactions. While a uniform superfluid prevails at half-filling, two novel solid phases emerge at densities $ρ=1/3$ and $ρ=2/3$. These solids exhibit an only partial ordering of the bosonic density, allowing for local resonances on a subset of hexagons of the kagome lattice. We provide evidence for a weakly first-order phase…
We present numerical studies of dipolar spin ice in the presence of a magnetic field slightly tilted away from the [111] axis. We find a first-order transition from a kagome ice to a $\mathbf{q}=$X state when the external field is tilted toward the $[11\bar{2}]$ direction. This is consistent with the anomalous critical scattering previously observed in the neutron scattering experiment on the spin ice material $\textrm{Ho}_{2}\textrm{Ti}_{2}\textrm{O}_{7}$ in a tilted field [Nat. Phys. 3, 566 (2007)]. We show that this ordering originates from the antiferromagnetic alignment of spin chains on …
We study equilibration and ordering in the classical dipolar kagome Ising antiferromagnet, which we show behaves as a disorder-free fragile spin glass. By identifying an appropriate order parameter, we demonstrate a transition to the ordered state proposed by Chioar et al. [Phys. Rev. B 93, 214410 (2016)] with a 12-site unit cell that breaks time-reversal and sublattice symmetries, and further provide evidence that the nature of the transition is first order. Upon approaching the transition, the spin dynamics slow dramatically. The system readily falls out of equilibrium, overshooting the tran…
Spin ice, a peculiar thermal state of a frustrated ferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice, has a finite entropy density and excitations carrying magnetic charge. By combining analytical arguments and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that spin ice on the two-dimensional kagome lattice orders in two stages. The intermediate phase has ordered magnetic charges and is separated from the paramagnetic phase by an Ising transition. The transition to the low-temperature phase is of the three-state Potts or Kosterlitz-Thouless type, depending on the presence of defects in charge order.
A promising route to realize entangled magnetic states combines geometrical frustration with quantum-tunneling effects. Spin-ice materials are canonical examples of frustration, and Ising spins in a transverse magnetic field are the simplest many-body model of quantum tunneling. Here, we show that the tripod kagome lattice material Ho${_3}$Mg${_2}$Sb${_3}$O${_{14}}$ unites an ice-like magnetic degeneracy with quantum-tunneling terms generated by an intrinsic splitting of the Ho$^{3+}$ ground-state doublet, which is further coupled to a nuclear spin bath. Using neutron scattering and thermodyna…

Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is at present the cleanest example of a spin-ice material. Previous theoretical and experimental work on the first-order transition between the kagome-ice and the fully polarized state has been taken as a validation for the dipolar spin-ice model. Here we investigate in further depth this phase transition using ac-susceptibility and dc-magnetization, and compare this results with Monte-Carlo simulations and previous magnetization and specific heat measurements. We find signatures of an intermediate state between the kagome-ice and full polarization. This signatures are absent…
Motivated by dipolar-coupled artificial spin systems, we present a theoretical study of the classical $J_1-J_2-J_3$ Ising antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice. We establish the ground-state phase diagram of this model for $J_1 > |J_2|, |J_3|$ based on exact results for the ground-state energies. When all the couplings are antiferromagnetic, the model has three macroscopically degenerate ground-state phases, and using tensor networks, we can calculate the entropies of these phases and of their boundaries very accurately. In two cases, the entropy appears to be a fraction of that of the triangu…
We present a numerical study of magnetic ordering in spin ice on kagome, a two-dimensional lattice of corner-sharing triangles. The magnet has six ground states and the ordering occurs in two stages, as one might expect for a six-state clock model. In spin ice with short-range interactions up to second neighbors, there is an intermediate critical phase separated from the paramagnetic and ordered phases by Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions. In dipolar spin ice, the intermediate phase has long-range order of staggered magnetic charges. The high and low-temperature phase transitions are of the Isin…
We report magnetization and neutron scattering measurements down to 60 mK on a new family of Fe based kagome antiferromagnets, in which a strong local spin anisotropy combined with a low exchange path network connectivity lead to domain walls intersecting the kagome planes through strings of free spins. These produce unfamiliar slow spin dynamics in the ordered phase, evolving from exchange-released spin-flips towards a cooperative behavior on decreasing the temperature, probably due to the onset of long-range dipolar interaction. A domain structure of independent magnetic grains is obtained t…
We study the effects of lattice deformations on the Kagome spin ice, with Ising spins coupled by nearest neighbor exchange and long range dipolar interactions, in the presence of in-plane magnetic fields. We describe the lattice energy according to the Einstein model, where each site distortion is treated independently. Upon integration of lattice degrees of freedom, effective quadratic spin interactions arise. Classical MonteCarlo simulations are performed on the resulting model, retaining up to third neighbor interactions, under different directions of the magnetic field. We find that, as th…
We study the two-dimensional kagome-ice model derived from a pyrochlore lattice with second- and third-neighbor interactions. The canted moments align along the local $\langle 111 \rangle$ axes of the pyrochlore and respond to both in-plane and out-of-plane external fields. We find that the combination of further-neighbor interactions together with the external fields introduces a rich phase diagram with different spin textures. Close to the phase boundaries, metastable $\textit{"snake"}$ domains emerge with extremely long relaxation time. Our kinetic Monte Carlo analysis of the magnetic-field…
Quantum spin liquids are a new class of magnetic ground state in which spins are quantum mechanically entangled over macroscopic scales. Motivated by recent advances in the control of polar molecules, we show that dipolar interactions between S=1/2 moments stabilize spin liquids on the triangular and kagome lattices. In the latter case, the moments spontaneously break time-reversal, forming a chiral spin liquid with robust edge modes and emergent semions. We propose a simple route toward synthesizing a dipolar Heisenberg antiferromagnet from lattice-trapped polar molecules using only a single …
We illustrate how the tensorial kernel support vector machine (TK-SVM) can probe the hidden multipolar orders and emergent local constraint in the classical kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We show that TK-SVM learns the finite-temperature phase diagram in an unsupervised way. Moreover, in virtue of its strong interpretability, it identifies the tensorial quadrupolar and octupolar orders, which define a biaxial $D_{3h}$ spin nematic, and the local constraint that underlies the selection of coplanar states. We then discuss the disorder hierarchy of the phases, which can be inferred from both …
A magnetic monopole in spin ice is a novel quasiparticle excitation in condensed matter physics, and we found that the ac frequency dependent magnetic susceptibility $χ(ω)$ in the two-dimensional (2D) spin ice (so-called kagomé ice) of Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ shows a single scaling form. This behavior can be understood in terms of the dynamical scaling law for 2D Coulomb gas (CG) systems [Phys. Rev. B 90, 144428 (2014)], characterized by the charge correlation length $ξ(\propto1/\sqrt{ω_1})$, where $ω_{1}$ is a characteristic frequency proportional to the peak position of the imaginary part of $χ(ω)…
Thermodynamic properties of a spin ice model on a Kagomé lattice are obtained from dynamic simulations and compared with properties in square lattice spin ice. The model assumes three-component Heisenberg-like dipoles of an array of planar magnetic islands situated on a Kagomé lattice. Ising variables are avoided. The island dipoles interact via long-range dipolar interactions and are restricted in their motion due to local shape anisotropies. We define various order parameters and obtain them and thermodynamic properties from the dynamics of the system via a Langevin equation, solved by the H…
We present an effective $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory that captures various competing phases in spin-1/2 kagome lattice antiferromagnets: the topological $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid (SL) phase, and the 12-site and 36-site valence bond solid (VBS) phases. Our effective theory is a generalization of the recent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory proposed for SL phases by Wan and Tchernyshyov. In particular, we investigate possible VBS phases that arise from vison condensations in the SL. In addition to the 12-site and 36-site VBS phases, there exists 6-site VBS that is closely related to the symmetry-break…
We show that doping of hole charge carriers leads to formation of electric dipolar clusters in cuprates. They are created by many-body interactions between the dopant ion outside and holes inside the CuO planes. Because of the two-fold degeneracy holes in the CuO plane cluster into four-particles resonance valence bond plaquettes bound with dopant ions. Such dipoles may order into charge-density waves (CDW) or stripes or form a disordered state depending on doping and temperature. The lowest energy of the ordered system corresponds to a local anti-ferroelectric ordering. The mobility of indivi…
Motivated by the experimental realization of quantum spin models of polar molecule KRb in optical lattices, we analyze the spin 1/2 dipolar Heisenberg model with competing anisotropic, long-range exchange interactions. We show that, by tilting the orientation of dipoles using an external electric field, the dipolar spin system on square lattice comes close to a maximally frustrated region similar, but not identical, to that of the $J_1$-$J_2$ model. This provides a simple yet powerful route to potentially realize a quantum spin liquid without the need for a triangular or kagome lattice. The gr…

Magnetic materials with competing magnetocrystalline anisotropy and dipolar energies can develop a wide range of domain patterns, including classical stripe domains, domain branching, as well as topologically trivial and non-trivial (skyrmionic) bubbles. We image the magnetic domain pattern of Fe$_3$Sn$_2$ by magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and study its evolution due to geometric confinement, magnetic fields, and their combination. In Fe$_3$Sn$_2$ lamellae thinner than 3 $μ$m, we observe stripe domains whose size scales with the square root of the lamella thickness, exhibiting classical Kitte…
On examining the stability of a Wigner Crystal (WC) in an ionic dielectric, two competitive effects due to Polaron formation are found to be important: (i) the screening of the Coulomb forces which destabilizes the crystal, compensated by (ii) the increase of the carrier mass (polaron mass). The quantum melting of the Polaron Wigner Crystal (PWC) is examined. By calculating the quantum fluctuations of both the electrons and the polarization, we show that there is a competition between the dissociation of the Polarons at the insulator-to-metal transition (IMT), and a melting towards a polaron l…

On examining the stability of a Wigner crystal in an ionic dielectric, two competitive effects due to the polaron formation are found to be important: (i) the screening of the Coulomb force, which destabilizes the crystal, compensated by (ii) the increase of the carrier mass (polaron mass). The competition between the two effects is carefully studied, and the quantum melting of the polaronic Wigner crystal is examined by varying the density at zero temperature. By calculating the quantum fluctuations of both the electron and the polarization, we show that there is a competition between the dis…
We report a comprehensive muon spectroscopy study of the Zn-barlowite series of $S={\frac{1}{2}}$ kagomé antiferromagnets, Zn$_x$Cu$_{4-x}$(OH)$_{6}$FBr, for $x=0.00$ to $0.99(1)$. By combining muon spin relaxation and rotation measurements with state-of-the-art density-functional theory muon-site calculations, we observe the formation of both $μ$--F and $μ$--OH complexes in Zn-barlowite. From these stopping sites, implanted muon spins reveal the suppression of long-range magnetic order into a possible quantum spin liquid state upon increasing concentration of Zn-substitution. In the parent co…
The emergence of complex modulated structures in the magnetization pattern of thin films is a well-established experimental phenomenology caused by the frustrating effects of competing interactions. Using a coarse-grained version of the Ising ferromagnet with dipolar interactions, we develop a method that uses the information from the microscopic Hamiltonian to predict the specific topological phases present in the temperature-external magnetic field phase diagram. This is done by the combination of mean-field variational calculations and the renormalization group equations from the classical …
Paramagnetic spin systems with spontaneously broken spatial symmetries, such as valence bond solid (VBS) phases, can host topological defects carrying non-trivial quantum numbers, which enables the paradigm of deconfined quantum criticality. In this work, we study the properties of topological defects in valence plaquette solid (VPS) phases on square and cubic lattices. We show that the defects of the VPS order parameter, in addition to possessing non-trivial quantum numbers, have fracton mobility constraints deep in the VPS phase, which has been overlooked previously. The spinon inside a sing…
We present powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction and bulk measurements of the Kagome-staircase compound Ni3V2O8 (NVO) in fields up to 8.5T applied along the c-direction. (The Kagome plane is the a-c plane.) This system contains two types of Ni ions, which we call "spine" and "cross-tie". Our neutron measurements can be described with the paramagnetic space group Cmca for T < 15K and each observed magnetically ordered phase is characterized by the appropriate irreducible representation(s). Our zero-field measurements show that at T_PH=9.1K NVO undergoes a transition to an incommensurate…
In a $β$-Mn-type chiral magnet Co$_9$Zn$_9$Mn$_2$, we demonstrate that the magnetic field-driven collapse of a room temperature metastable topological skyrmion lattice passes through a regime described by a partial topological charge inversion. Using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, the magnetization distribution was observed directly as the magnetic field was swept antiparallel to the original skyrmion core magnetization, i.e. negative magnetic fields. Due to the topological stability of skyrmions, a direct transition of the metastable skyrmion lattice to the equilibrium helical stat…

Synthetic fields applied to ultracold quantum gases can realize topological phases that transcend conventional Bose and Fermi-liquid paradigms. Raman laser beams in particular are under scrutiny as a route to create synthetic fields in neutral gases to mimic ordinary magnetic and electric fields acting on charged matter. Yet external laser beams can impose heating and losses that make cooling into many-body topological phases challenging. We propose that atomic or molecular dipoles placed in optical lattices can realize a topological phase without synthetic fields by placing them in certain fr…
