In this work we investigate the effects of a Fermi velocity modulation in a valley filter in graphene created by a combination of a magnetic and electric barrier. With the effective Dirac equation of the system, we use the transfer matrix formalism to obtain the transmittance. We verify that the valley transport in graphene is very sensitive to a Fermi velocity modulation, which is able to choose which valley will be filtered with perfect filtering. Also, it is possible to use a Fermi velocity modulation to filter both valleys or to make the valley filter transparent. It reveals that the Fermi velocity is a powerful tool that can be used to tune a graphene valley filter, since it has a total control in its transport properties.
We propose a realization of perfect valley filters based on the chiral domain-wall channels between a quantum anomalous Hall insulator and a quantum valley Hall insulator. Uniquely, all these channels reside in the same valley and propagate unidirectionally, $100\%$ valley-polarizing passing-by carriers without backscattering. The valley index, the chirality, and the number of the channels are protected by topological charges, controllable by external fields, and detectable by circular dichroism.
We study perfect valley polarization in a molybdenum disulfide MoS2 nanoribbon monolayer using two bands Hamiltonian model and non-equilibrium Green's function method. The device consists of a one-dimensional quantum wire of MoS2 monolayer sandwiched between two zigzag MoS2 nanoribbons such that the sites A and B of the honeycomb lattice are constructed by the molecular orbital of Mo atoms, only. Spin-valley coupling is seen in energy dispersion curve due to the inversion asymmetry and time-reversal symmetry. Although, the time reversal symmetry is broken by applying an external magnetic field…
We consider theoretically staggered honeycomb lattices for photons which can be viewed as photonic analogs of transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMD) monolayers. We propose a simple realization of a photonic Quantum Valley Hall effect (QVHE) at the interface between two TMD analogs with opposite staggering on each side. This results in the formation of valley-polarized propagating modes whose existence relies on the difference between the valley Chern numbers, which is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant. We show that the magnitude of the photonic spin-orbit coupling based on the energy sp…
We present a single barrier system to generate pure valley-polarized current in monolayer graphene. A uniaxial strain is applied within the barrier region, which is delineated by localized magnetic field created by ferromagnetic stripes at the regions boundaries. We show that under the condition of matching magnetic field strength, strain potential, and Fermi energy, the transmitted current is composed of only one valley contribution. The desired valley current can transmit with zero reflection while the electrons from the other valley are totally reflected. Thus, the system generates pure val…
The hydrogenated $\rm{Sb}$ monolayer epitaxially grown on a $\rm{LaFeO_3}$ substrate is a novel type of two-dimensional material hosting quantum spin-quantum anomalous Hall (QS-QAH) states. For a device formed by $\rm{Sb}$ monolayer ribbon, the QAH edge states, belong to a single valley, are located at opposite edges of the ribbon. The QSH edge states, on the other hand, belong to the other valley and are distributed in a very narrow region at the same edge. In this paper, we find such material can be used to fabricate perfect valley filter. Adopting scattering matrix method and Green's functi…
We propose a realization of pure spin currents and perfect valley filter based on a quantum anomalous Hall insulator, around which edge states with up-spin and down-spin circulate. By applying staggered sublattice potential on the strips along the edges of sample, the edge states with down spin can be pushed into the inner boundaries of the strips while the other edge states with up spin remain on the outer boundaries, resulting in spatially separated chiral states with perfect spin polarization. Moreover, a valley filter, which is immune to short-range and smooth long-range scatterers, can be…
Owing to its charge-free property, magnon is highly promising to achieve dissipationless transport without Joule heating and thus potentially applicable to energy-efficient devices. Moreover, a kagome lattice, as stacking layers of many magnon ferromagnets, also exhibits valley structure in quasiparticle spectra, which are likely to add a new dimension to magnon excitation. Here, we investigate valley magnon and associated valley modulation in a kagome lattice, with staggered exchange interaction and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The staggered exchange interaction breaks spatial inversion…
We study the polarization dependence of optical absorption for the modified Haldane model, which exhibits antichiral edge modes in presence of sample boundaries and has been argued to be realizable in transition metal dichalcogenides or Weyl semimetals. A rich optical phase diagram is unveiled, in which the correlations between perfect circular dichroism, pseudospin and valley polarization can be tuned independently upon varying the Fermi energy. Importantly, perfect circular dichroism and valley polarization are achieved simultaneously. This unprecedented combination of optical properties sug…
The extreme mechanical resilience of graphene and the peculiar coupling it hosts between lattice and electronic degrees of freedom have spawned a strong impetus towards strain-engineered graphene where, on the one hand, strain augments the richness of its phenomenology and makes possible new concepts for electronic devices and, on the other hand, new and extreme physics might take place. Here, we demonstrate that the shape of substrates supporting graphene sheets can be optimized for approachable experiments where strain-induced pseudomagnetic fields (PMF) can be tailored by pressure for direc…
Graphene electrons feature a pair of massless Dirac cones of opposite pseudospin chirality at two valleys. Klein tunneling refers to the intriguing capability of these chiral electrons to penetrate through high and wide potential barrier. The two valleys have been treated independently in the literature, where time reversal symmetry dictates that neither the normal incidence transmission nor the angle-averaged one can have any valley polarization. Here we show that, when intervalley scattering by barrier is accounted, graphene electrons normally incident at a superlattice barrier can experienc…
The dynamic polarization for kekulé-patterned graphene is studied within the Random Phase Approximation (RPA). It is shown how the breaking of the valley degeneracy by the lattice modulation is manifested through the dielectric spectrum, the plasmonic dispersion, the static screening and the optical conductivity. The valley-dependent splitting of the Fermi velocities due to the kekulé distortion leads to a similar splitting in the dielectric spectrum of graphene, introducing new characteristic frequencies, which are given in terms of the valley-coupling amplitude. The valley coupling also spli…
The band structure of graphene ribbons with zigzag edges have two valleys well separated in momentum space, related to the two Dirac points of the graphene spectrum. The propagating modes in each valley contain a single chiral mode originating from a partially flat band at band center. This feature gives rise to a perfectly conducting channel in the disordered system, if the impurity scattering does not connect the two valleys, i.e. for long-range impurity potentials. Ribbons with short-range impurity potentials, however, through inter-valley scattering display ordinary localization behavior. …
We propose a simple, yet highly efficient and robust device for producing valley polarized current in graphene. The device comprises of two distinct components; a region of uniform uniaxial strain, adjacent to an out-of-plane magnetic barrier configuration formed by patterned ferromagnetic gates. We show that when the amount of strain, magnetic field strength, and Fermi level are properly tuned, the output current can be made to consist of only a single valley contribution. Perfect valley filtering is achievable within experimentally accessible parameters.
Recent experiments by Gutiérrez $\textit{et al.}$ [Nature Phys. $\textbf{12}$, 950 (2016)] on a graphene-copper superlattice have revealed an unusual Kekulé bond texture in the honeycomb lattice --- a Y-shaped modulation of weak and strong bonds with a wave vector connecting two Dirac points. We show that this so-called "Kek-Y" texture produces two species of massless Dirac fermions, with valley isospin locked parallel or antiparallel to the direction of motion. In a magnetic field $B$ the valley degeneracy of the $B$-dependent Landau levels is removed by the valley-momentum locking --- but a …
Due to their possibility to encode information and realize low-energy-consumption quantum devices, control and manipulation of the valley degree of freedom have been widely studied in electronic systems. In contrast, the phononic counterpart--valley phononics--has been largely unexplored, despite the importance in both fundamental science and practical applications. In this work, we demonstrate that the control of "valleys" is also applicable for phonons in graphene by using a grain boundary. In particular, perfect valley filtering effect is observed at certain energy windows for flexural mode…
The intrinsic spin-orbit coupling in the 2D staggered monolayer semiconductors is very large as compared to graphene. The large spin orbit interaction in these materials leads to the opening of a gap in the energy spectrum and spin-splitting of the bands in each valley. In this paper, we theoretically investigate the mechanical steering of beams from these spin-orbit rich, staggered 2D materials. Mechanical steering results in noticeable deviations of the reflected and transmitted ray profiles as predicted from classical laws of optics. These effects are generally called the Goos-Hanchen (GH) …
In this Letter, both the manipulation of valley-polarized currents and the optical-like behaviors of Dirac fermions are theoretically explored in polycrystalline graphene. When strain is applied, the misorientation between two graphene domains separated by a grain boundary can result in a mismatch of their electronic structures. Such a discrepancy manifests itself in a strong breaking of the inversion symmetry, leading to perfect valley polarization in a wide range of transmission directions. In addition, these graphene domains act as different media for electron waves, offering the possibilit…
In addition to electron charge and spin, novel materials host another degree of freedom, the valley. For a junction composed of valley filter sandwiched by two normal terminals, we focus on the valley efficiency under disorder with two valley filter models based on monolayer and bilayer graphene. Applying the transfer matrix method, valley resolved transmission coefficients are obtained. We find that: i) under weak disorder, when the line defect length is over about $15\rm nm$, it functions as a perfect channel (quantized conductance) and valley filter (totally polarized); ii) in the diffusive…
Achieving a population imbalance between the two inequivalent valleys is a critical first step for any valleytronic device. A valley-polarization can be induced in biased bilayer graphene using circularly polarized light. In this paper, we present a detailed theoretical study of valley-polarization in biased bilayer graphene. We show that a nearly perfect valley-polarization can be achieved with the proper choices of external bias and pulse frequency. We find that the optimal pulse frequency $ω$ is given by $\hbarω=2a,$ where $2a$ is the potential energy difference between the graphene layers.…
We study the conductivity of disordered zigzag graphene nanoribbons in the incoherent regime by using the Boltzmann equation approach. The band structure of zigzag nanoribbons contains two energy valleys, and each valley has an excess one-way channel. The crucial point is that the numbers of conducting channels for two propagating directions are imbalanced in each valley due to the presence of an excess one-way channel. It was pointed out that as a consequence of this imbalance, a perfectly conducting channel is stabilized in the coherent regime if intervalley scattering is absent. We show tha…
We adopt the tight-binding mode-matching method to study the strain effect on silicene heterojunctions. It is found that valley- and spin-dependent separation of electrons cannot be achieved by the electric field only. When a strain and an electric field are simultaneously applied to the central scattering region, not only are the electrons of valleys K and K' separated into two distinct transmission lobes in opposite transverse directions, but the up-spin and down-spin electrons will also move in the two opposite transverse directions. Therefore, one can realize an effective modulation of val…
We study the effect of the strain on the band structure and the valley-dependent transport property of graphene heterojunctions. It is found that valley-dependent separation of electrons can be achieved by utilizing the strain and on-site energies. In the presence of the strain, the values of the transmission can be effectively adjusted by changing the strengths of the strain, while the transport angle basically keeps unchanged. When an extra on-site energy is simultaneously applied to the central scattering region, not only are the electrons of valleys K and K' separated into two distinct tra…
In graphene, the pseudospin and the valley flavor arise as new types of quantum degrees of freedom due to the honeycomb lattice comprising two sublattices (A and B) and two inequivalent Dirac points (K and K') in the Brillouin zone, respectively. Unique electronic properties of graphene result in striking phenomena such as Klein tunnelling, Veselago lens, and valley-polarized currents. Here, we investigate the roles of the pseudospin and the valley in electron scattering at graphene edges and show that they are strongly correlated with charge density modulations of short-wavelength oscillation…
We recently shown, using tight-binding calculations, that nonequilibrium valley polarization can be realized in graphene, when the current is injected through "valley filter": a ballistic point contact with zigzag edges. Here we demonstrate, that the effect is surprisingly robust against changing the crystallographic orientation of the filter axis. Namely, the output current remains polarized unless a point contact has perfect armchair edges, at which two subblattices are equally represented. The polarization is inverted when the filter orientation crosses the amchair line and, subsequently, d…
Numerical calculations have been performed to elucidate unconventional electronic transport properties in disordered nanographene ribbons with zigzag edges (zigzag ribbons). The energy band structure of zigzag ribbons has two valleys that are well separated in momentum space, related to the two Dirac points of the graphene spectrum. The partial flat bands due to edge states make the imbalance between left- and right-going modes in each valley, {\it i.e.} appearance of a single chiral mode. This feature gives rise to a perfectly conducting channel in the disordered system, i.e. the average of c…
The transport properties of Chern insulator junctions generated by bipolar junctions in quantum Hall graphene are theoretically studied in the coherent regime. Coherent transport across the junction exhibits two mesoscopic features: valley-isospin dependence of the quantum Hall conductance, and the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effects with the interface channels. We demonstrate that the valley-isospin dependence can be measured in a graphene sample with perfect edge terminations, resulting in conductance oscillation for the smallest Chern number case. On the other hand, while conductance plateaus are fo…
We propose a realizable device design for an all-electrical robust valley filter that utilizes spin protected topological interface states hosted on monolayer 2D-Xene materials with large intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. In contrast with conventional quantum spin-Hall edge states localized around the $X$-points, the interface states appearing at the domain wall between topologically distinct phases are either from the $K$ or $K^{'}$ points, making them suitable prospects for serving as valley-polarized channels. We show that the presence of a large band-gap quantum spin Hall effect enables the s…
This work performs a numerical study of electron transport through the fundamental logic gate in valleytronics - a valley valve consisting of two or increasing number of valley filters. Various typical effects on the transport are investigated, such as those due to interface scattering, long- and short- range impurity scattering, edge roughness, strain, inter-filter spacing, or increasing number of valley filters. For illustration, we consider the class of specific valves built from graphene quantum wire valley filters in single layer or bilayer graphene, with the filters subject to separate c…
The low-energy spectrum of graphene nanoribbons with armchair edges (armchair nanoribbons) is described as the superposition of two non-equivalent Dirac points of graphene. In spite of the lack of well-separated two valley structures, the single-channel transport subjected to long-ranged impurities is nearly perfectly conducting, where the backward scattering matrix elements in the lowest order vanish as a manifestation of internal phase structures of the wavefunction. For multi-channel energy regime, however, the conventional exponential decay of the averaged conductance occurs. Since the int…
Ferroelectric van der Waals heterostructures provide a natural platform to design a variety of electrically controllable devices. In this work, we demonstrate that AB bilayer graphene encapsulated in MoTe$_2$ acts as a valley valve that displays a switchable built-in topological gap, leading to ferroelectrically driven topological channels. Using a combination of ab initio calculations and low energy models, we show that the ferroelectric order of MoTe$_2$ allows the control of the gap opening in bilayer graphene and leads to topological channels between different ferroelectric domains. Moreov…
Graphene on hBN (G/hBN) has a long period moiré superstructure owing to the lattice mismatch between two materials. Long periodic potential caused by the moiré superstructure induces modulation of electronic properties of the system. In this paper, we numerically calculate optical conductivity of G/hBN under circularly polarized light irradiation. The lack of spatial inversion symmetry in G/hBN induces the valley polarization. In further, the valley polarization becomes most pronounced in the infrared and terahertz regions if the twist angle between two materials is close to zero for non-dopin…
Modulation of electronic states in two-dimensional (2D) materials can be achieved by using in-plane variations of the band gap or the average potential in lateral quantum structures. In the atomic configurations with hexagonal symmetry, this approach makes it possible to tailor the valleytronic properties for potential device applications. In this work, we present a multi-band theory to calculate the valley-dependent electron transport in graphene-based lateral quantum structures. As an example, we consider the structures with a single interface that exhibits an energy gap or potential discont…
Using the transfer matrix method, spin- and valley-dependent electron transport properties modulated by the velocity barrier were studied in the normal/ferromagnetic/normal monolayer MoS$_{2}$ quantum structure. Based on Snell's Law in optics, we define the velocity barrier as $ξ=v_{2}/v_{1}$ by changing the Fermi velocity of the intermediate ferromagnetic region to obtain a deflection condition during the electron transport process in the structure. The results show that both the magnitude and the direction of spin- and valley-dependent electron polarization can be regulated by the velocity b…
Chirality is a fundamental property of electrons with the relativistic spectrum found in graphene and topological insulators. It plays a crucial role in relativistic phenomena, such as Klein tunneling, but it is difficult to visualize directly. Here we report the direct observation and manipulation of chirality and pseudospin polarization in the tunneling of electrons between two almost perfectly aligned graphene crystals. We use a strong in-plane magnetic field as a tool to resolve the contributions of the chiral electronic states that have a phase difference between the two components of the…
In this work, we investigate spin and valley transport properties of a WSe$_2$ monolayer placed on top of a ferromagnetic insulator. We are interested in controlling the transport properties by applying external potentials to the system. To obtain spin an valley polarizations, we have considered a single and a double barrier structure with gate potentials. We have analyzed how the efficiency of these polarized transport properties depend on the gate-potential intensities and geometrical configurations. Additionally, we investigate how the spin and valley transport properties are modified when …
Dissipation-driven quantum state engineering uses the environment to steer the state of quantum systems and preserve quantum coherence in the steady state. We show that modulating the damping rate of a microwave resonator generates a vacuum squeezed state of arbitrary squeezing strength, thereby constituting a mechanism allowing perfect squeezing. Given the recent experimental realizations in circuit QED of a microwave resonator with a tunable damping rate [Yin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 107001 (2013)], superconducting circuits are an ideal playground to implement this technique. By dispers…
Ballistic point contact (BPC) with zigzag edges in graphene is a main candidate of a valley filter, in which the polarization of the valley degree of freedom can be selected by using a local gate voltage. Here, we propose to detect the valley filtering effect by Andreev reflection. Because electrons in the lowest conduction band and the highest valence band of the BPC possess opposite chirality, the inter-band Andreev reflection is strongly suppressed, after multiple scattering and interference. We draw this conclusion by both the scattering matrix analysis and the numerical simulation. The An…
We introduce a generalized Hamiltonian describing not only all topological phases observed experimentally in Kekulé graphene (KekGr) but predicting also new ones. These phases show features like a quadratic band crossing point, valley splitting, or the crossing of conduction bands, typically induced by Rashba spin-orbit interactions or Zeeman fields. The electrons in KekGr behave as Dirac fermions and follow pseudo-relativistic dispersion relations with Fermi velocities, rest masses, and valley-dependent self-gating. Transitions between the topological phases can be induced by tuning these par…
Valley polarized topological kink states, existing broadly in the domain wall of hexagonal lattices systems, are identified in experiments, unfortunately, only very limited physical properties being given. Using an Aharanov-Bohm interferometer composed of domain walls in graphene systems, we study the periodical modulation of pure valley current in a large range by tuning the magnetic field or the Fermi level. For monolayer graphene device, there exists one topological kink state, and the oscillation of transmission coefficients have single period. The $π$ Berry phase and the linear dispersion…
We study the conductance of graphene nanoribbons with long-range disorder. Due to the absence of intervalley scattering from the disorder potential, time-reversal symmetry (TRS) can be effectively broken even without a magnetic field, depending on the type of ribbon edge. Even though armchair edges generally mix valleys, we show that metallic armchair nanoribbons possess a hidden pseudovalley structure and effectively broken TRS. In contrast, semiconducting armchair nanoribbons inevitably mix valleys and restore TRS. As a result, in strong disorder metallic armchair ribbons exhibit a perfectly…
We study the electronic transport properties at the intersection of three topological zero-lines as the elementary current partition node that arises in minimally twisted bilayer graphene. Unlike the partition laws of two intersecting zero-lines, we find that (i) the incoming current can be partitioned into both left-right adjacent topological channels and that (ii) the forward-propagating current is nonzero. By tuning the Fermi energy from the charge-neutrality point to a band edge, the currents partitioned into the three outgoing channels become nearly equal. Moreover, we find that current p…
Exotic correlated insulating phases emerge in the ABC-stacked trilayer graphene-boron nitride Moire super-lattice at both quarter and half-filling. A single-band minimal model with valley contrasting staggered-flux is proposed to capture the relevant band structure, where the conspiracy of perfect Fermi-surface nesting and van Hove singularity strongly enhance the valley fluctuation, leading to inter-valley spiral (IVS) order at half filling. In this paper, we consider a strong coupling U(1)$_{v}\times $SU(2)$_{s}$ symmetric spin-valley model to obtain the correlated insulating state and the p…
Van-der-Waals heterostructures have become a paradigm for designing new materials and devices, in which specific functionalities can be tailored by combining the properties of the individual 2D layers. A single layer of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) is an excellent complement to graphene (Gr), since the high quality of charge and spin transport in Gr is enriched with the large spin-orbit coupling of the TMD via proximity effect. The controllable spin-valley coupling makes these heterostructures particularly attractive for spintronic and opto-valleytronic applications. In this work, we …
We will present brief overview on the electronic and transport properties of graphene nanoribbons focusing on the effect of edge shapes and impurity scattering. The low-energy electronic states of graphene have two non-equivalent massless Dirac spectrum. The relative distance between these two Dirac points in the momentum space and edge states due to the existence of the zigzag type graphene edges are decisive to the electronic and transport properties of graphene nanoribbons. In graphene nanoribbons with zigzag edges, two valleys related to each Dirac spectrum are well separated in momentum s…
