We formulate and experimentally validate an equivalent-circuit model based on distributed elements to describe the electric and electro-optic (EO) properties of travellingwave silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) slot-waveguide modulators. The model allows to reliably predict the small-signal EO frequency response of the modulators exploiting purely electrical measurements of the frequency-dependent RF transmission characteristics. We experimentally verify the validity of our model, and we formulate design guidelines for an optimum trade-off between optical loss due to free-carrier absorption (FCA), electro-optic bandwidth, and π-voltage of SOH slot-waveguide modulators.
Reliable operation of photonic integrated circuits at cryogenic temperatures would enable new capabilities for emerging computing platforms, such as quantum technologies and low-power cryogenic computing. The silicon-on-insulator platform is a highly promising approach to developing large-scale photonic integrated circuits due to its exceptional manufacturability, CMOS compatibility and high component density. Fast, efficient and low-loss modulation at cryogenic temperatures in silicon, however, remains an outstanding challenge, particularly without the addition of exotic nonlinear optical mat…
Engineering cm-scale true push-pull electro-optic modulators in a suspended GaAs photonic integrated circuit platform by exploiting the orientation induced asymmetry of the Pockels $r_{41}$ coefficient
Recently integrated optics has become an intriguing platform for implementing machine learning algorithms and inparticular neural networks. Integrated photonic circuits can straightforwardly perform vector-matrix multiplicationswith high efficiency and low power consumption by using weighting mechanism through linear optics. Although, this can not be said for the activation function which requires either nonlinear optics or an electro-optic module withan appropriate dynamic range. Even though all-optical nonlinear optics is potentially faster, its current integrationis challenging and is rather…
We investigate a plasmonic electro-optic modulator with an extinction ratio exceeding 1 dB/um by engineering the optical mode to be in-plane with the graphene layer, and show how lowering the operating temperature enables steeper switching. We show how cooling Graphene enables steeping thus improving dynamic energy consumption. Further, we show that multi-layer Graphene integrated with a plasmonic slot waveguide allows for in-plane electric field components, and 3-dB device lengths as short as several hundred nanometers only. Compact modulators approaching electronic length-scales pave a way f…
An integrated hybrid thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) electro-optic Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) is shown at near-infrared wavelengths. The design uses TFLN bonded to planarized silicon nitride waveguide circuits, and does not require etching or patterning of TFLN. The push-pull MZM achieves a half-wave voltage length product ($V_πL$) of 0.8 V$.$cm at 784 nm. MZM devices with 0.4 cm and 0.8 cm modulation length show a broadband electro-optic response with a 3 dB bandwidth beyond 100 GHz, with the latter showing a bandwidth to half-wave voltage ratio of 100 GHz/V.
We introduce phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) into metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide systems to realize chipscale plasmonic modulators and switches in the telecommunication band. Benefitting from the high contrast of optical properties between amorphous and crystalline GST, the three proposed structures can act as reconfigurable and non-volatile modulators and switches with excellent modulation depth 14 dB and fast response time in nanosecond, meanwhile possessing small footprints, simple frameworks and easy fabrication. This work provides new solutions to design active devices in MIM…

Emerging technologies based on tailorable interactions between photons and phonons promise new capabilities ranging from high-fidelity microwave signal processing to non-reciprocal optics and quantum state control. While such light-sound couplings have been studied in a variety of physical systems, many implementations rely on non-standard materials and fabrication schemes that are challenging to co-implement with standard integrated photonic circuitry. Notably, despite significant advances in integrated electro-optic modulators, related acousto-optic modulator concepts have remained relativel…
Silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) electro-optic (EO) modulators combine small footprint with low operating voltage and hence low power dissipation, thus lending themselves to on-chip integration of large-scale device arrays. Here we demonstrate an electrical packaging concept that enables high-density radio-frequency (RF) interfaces between on-chip SOH devices and external circuits. The concept combines high-resolution $\mathrm{Al_2O_3}$ printed-circuit boards with technically simple metal wire bonds and is amenable to packaging of device arrays with small on-chip bond pad pitches. Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) at cryogenic temperatures enable a wide range of applications in scalable classical and quantum systems for computing and sensing. A promising application of cryogenic PICs is to provide optical interconnects by up-converting signals from electrical to optical domain, allowing massive data-transfer from 4 K superconducting (SC) electronics to room temperature environment. Such a solution is central to overcome the major bottleneck in the scalability of cryogenic systems, which currently rely on bulky copper cables that suffer from limited bandwidth, large he…
We propose a triply-resonant electro-optic modulator architecture which maximizes modulation efficiency using simultaneous resonant enhancement of the RF drive signal, the optical pump, and the generated optical sideband. Optical enhancement of the optical pump and the sideband is achieved using resonant supermodes of two coupled optical resonators, and the RF enhancement is achieved with LC circuits formed by the capacitances of the optical resonators and inductors which can be implemented using CMOS technology. In the proposed configuration, the photon lifetime determines the bandwidth of th…
A simple optical circuit made by a cascade of two graphene-on-silicon electro absorption modulators (EAMs) of different length is used for the optical pre-emphasis of 10 Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signals by delay-inverse-weight compensation. Transmission up to 100 km on single mode fiber (SMF) without dispersion compensation is reported, showing also the large performance advantage (6 dB in back-to back and around 5 dB in transmission) in respect of the conventional single EAM transmitter configuration.
To develop a new generation of high-speed photonic modulators on silicon-technology-based photonics, new materials with large Pockels coefficients have been transferred to silicon substrates. Previous approaches focus on realizing stand-alone devices on dedicated silicon substrates, incompatible with the fabrication process in silicon foundries. In this work, we demonstrate monolithic integration of electro-optic modulators based on the Pockels effect in barium titanate (BTO) thin films into the back-end-of-line of a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) platform. Molecular wafer bonding allows fu…
Electro-optic modulators for high-speed on-off keying (OOK) are key components of short- and mediumreach interconnects in data-center networks. Besides small footprint and cost-efficient large-scale production, small drive voltages and ultra-low power consumption are of paramount importance for such devices. Here we demonstrate that the concept of silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) integration is perfectly suited for meeting these challenges. The approach combines the unique processing advantages of large-scale silicon photonics with unrivalled electro-optic (EO) coefficients obtained by molecular e…
The use of the Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) platform has been prominent for realizing CMOS-compatible, high-performance photonic integrated circuits (PICs). But in recent years, the silicon-nitride-on-silicon-dioxide (SiN-on-SiO$_2$) platform has garnered increasing interest as an alternative to the SOI platform for realizing high-performance PICs. This is because of its several beneficial properties over the SOI platform, such as low optical losses, high thermo-optic stability, broader wavelength transparency range, and high tolerance to fabrication-process variations. However, SiN-on-SiO$_2$ b…
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) band (30 - 300 GHz) is an emerging spectrum range for wireless communication, short-range radar and sensor applications. mmWave-optic modulators that could efficiently convert mmWave signals into optical domain are crucial components for long-haul transmission of mmWave signals through optical networks. At these ultrahigh frequencies, however, the modulation performances are highly sensitive to the transmission line loss as well as the velocity- and impedance-matching conditions, while precise measurements and modeling of these parameters are often non-trivial. Here we…
Local laser oxidation of a thin titanium film is considered as a means of a precise adjustment of losses and effective refractive index of dielectric optical waveguides. A fine phase control of an operating point and extinction ratio enhancement up to 57 dB were demonstrated using an integrated optical Ti:LiNbO3 Mach-Zehnder modulator. This technique only slightly affects the dielectric waveguide material and is very promising for a high precision permanent trimming of photonic devices based on dielectric waveguides of different material platforms and fabrication technologies.
A fundamental challenge of the quantum revolution is to efficiently interface the quantum computing systems operating at cryogenic temperatures with room temperature electronics and media for high data-rate communication. Current approaches to control and readout of such cryogenic computing systems use electrical cables, which prevent scalability due to their large size, heat conduction, and limited bandwidth1. A more viable approach is to use optical fibers which allow high-capacity transmission and thermal isolation. A key component in implementing photonic datalinks is a cryogenic optical m…
Waveguide integrated optical modulators in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) wavelength range are of significant interest for molecular spectroscopy in one hand, as on-chip synchronous detection can improve the performance of detection systems, and for free-space communications on the other hand, where optical modulators working in the atmospheric transparency windows are crucially missing. Here we report for the first time the demonstration of optical modulation in mid-IR photonic circuit reaching wavelengths larger than 8 um. The ability of photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) to confine and slow down light makes them an ideal component to enhance the performance of various photonic devices, such as optical modulators or sensors. However, the integration of PCWs in photonic applications poses design challenges, most notably, engineering the PCW mode dispersion and creating efficient coupling devices. Here, we solve these challenges with photonic inverse design, and experimentally demonstrate a slow-light PCW optical phased array (OPA) with a wide steering range. Reducing energy dissipation is a central goal of classical and quantum technologies. Optics achieved great success in bringing down power consumption of long-distance communication links. With the rise of mobile, quantum and cloud technologies, it is essential to extend this success to shorter links. Electro-optic modulators are a crucial contributor of dissipation in such links. Numerous variations on important mechanisms such as free-carrier modulation and the Pockels effect are currently pursued, but there are few investigations of mechanical motion as an electro-optic mechanism in silicon.…
