The local balance equations for the density, momentum, and energy of a dilute gas of elastic or inelastic hard spheres, strongly confined between two parallel hard plates are obtained. The starting point is a Boltzmann-like kinetic equation, recently derived for this system. As a consequence of the confinement, the pressure tensor and the heat flux contain, in addition to the terms associated to the motion of the particles, collisional transfer contributions, similar to those that appear beyond the dilute limit. The complexity of these terms, and of the kinetic equation itself, compromise the potential of the equation to describe the rich phenomenology observed in this kind of systems. For this reason, a simpler model equation based on the Boltzmann equation is proposed. The model is formulated to keep the main properties of the underlying equation, and it is expected to provide relevant information in more general states than the original equation. As an illustration, the solution describing a macroscopic state with uniform temperature, but a density gradient perpendicular to the plates is considered. This is the equilibrium state for an elastic system, and the inhomogeneous cooling state for the case of inelastic hard spheres. The results are in good agreement with previous results obtained directly from the Boltzmann equation.
We study a two-dimensional gas of inelastic rough spheres, driven on the rotational degrees of freedom. Numerical simulations are compared to mean-field (MF) predictions with surprisingly good agreement for strong coupling of rotational and translational degrees of freedom -- even for very strong dissipation in the translational degrees. Although the system is spatially homogeneous, the rotational velocity distribution is essentially Maxwellian. Surprisingly, the distribution of tangential velocities is strongly deviating from a Maxwellian. An interpretation of these results is proposed, as we…
The inelastic hard sphere model of granular material is simple, easily accessible to theory and simulation, and captures much of the physics of granular media. It has three drawbacks, all related to the approximation that collisions are instantaneous: 1) The number of collisions per unit time can diverge, i.e. the ``inelastic collapse'' can occur. 2) All interactions are binary, multiparticle contacts cannot occur and 3) no static limit exists. We extend the inelastic hard sphere model by defining a duration of contact t_c such that dissipation is allowed only if the time between contacts is l…
Starting from the fluctuating Boltzmann equation for smooth inelastic hard spheres or disks, closed equations for the fluctuating hydrodynamic fields to Navier-Stokes order are derived. This requires to derive constitutive relations for both the fluctuating fluxes and the correlations of the random forces. The former are identified as having the same form as the macroscopic average fluxes and involving the same transport coefficients. On the other hand, the random force terms exhibit two peculiarities as compared with their elastic limit for molecular systems. Firstly, they are not white, but …
Due to the mathematical complexity of the Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres, a kinetic model has recently been proposed whereby the collision rate (which is proportional to the relative velocity for hard spheres) is replaced by an average velocity-independent value. The resulting inelastic Maxwell model has received a large amount of recent interest, especially in connection with the high energy tail of homogeneous states. In this paper the transport coefficients of inelastic Maxwell models in d dimensions are derived by means of the Chapman-Enskog method for unforced systems as we…
We calculate and verify with simulations the ratio between the average translational and rotational energies of systems with rough, inelastic particles, either forced or freely cooling. The ratio shows non-equipartition of energy. In stationary flows, this ratio depends mainly on the particle roughness, but in nonstationary flows, such as freely cooling granular media, it also depends strongly on the normal dissipation. The approach presented here unifies and simplifies different results obtained by more elaborate kinetic theories. We observe that the boundary induced energy flux plays an impo…
We study a generic class of inelastic soft sphere models with a binary collision rate $g^ν$ that depends on the relative velocity $g$. This includes previously studied inelastic hard spheres ($ν=1$) and inelastic Maxwell molecules ($ν=0$). We develop a new asymptotic method for analyzing large deviations from Gaussian behavior for the velocity distribution function $f(c)$. The framework is that of the spatially uniform nonlinear Boltzmann equation and special emphasis is put on the situation where the system is driven by white noise. Depending on the value of exponent $ν$, three different situ…
We consider the one-dimensional motion of a particle randomly accelerated by Gaussian white noise on the line segment 0<x<1. The reflections of the particle from the boundaries at x=0 and 1 are inelastic, with coefficient of restitution r. We have solved the Fokker-Planck equation satisfied by the equilibrium distribution function P(x,v) with a combination of exact analytical and numerical methods. Throughout the interval 0<r<1, P(x,v) remains extended, as opposed to collapsed. The particle is not localized at the boundary. However, for r<0.163 the equilibrium boundary collision rate is infini…
This work is devoted to analyze the relation between the thermodynamic properties of a confined fluid and the shape of its confining vessel. Recently, new insights in this topic were found through the study of cluster integrals for inhomogeneous fluids, that revealed the dependence on the vessel shape of the low density behavior of the system. Here, the statistical mechanics and thermodynamics of fluids confined in wedges or by edges is revisited, focusing on their cluster integrals. In particular, the well known hard sphere fluid, which was not studied in this framework so far, is analyzed un…
We evaluate the scattering functions of a gas of spin-polarized, non-interacting fermions confined in a quasi-onedimensional harmonic trap at zero temperature. The main focus is on the inelastic scattering spectrum and on the angular distribution of scattered light from a mesoscopic atomic cloud as probes of its discrete quantum levels and of its shell structure in this restricted geometry. The dynamic structure factor is calculated and compared with the results of a local-density approximation exploiting the spectrum of a one-dimensional homogeneous Fermi gas. The elastic and inelastic contri…
We study heat transport in a class of stochastic energy exchange systems that characterize the interactions of networks of locally trapped hard spheres under the assumption that neighbouring particles undergo rare binary collisions. Our results provide an extension to three-dimensional dynamics of previous ones applying to the dynamics of confined two-dimensional hard disks [Gaspard P & Gilbert T On the derivation of Fourier's law in stochastic energy exchange systems J Stat Mech (2008) P11021]. It is remarkable that the heat conductivity is here again given by the frequency of energy exchange…
A kinetic equation for a system of elastic hard spheres or disks confined by a hard wall of arbitrary shape is derived. It is a generalization of the modified Enskog equation in which the effects of the confinement are taken into account and it is supposed to be valid up to moderate densities. From the equation, balance equations for the hydrodynamic fields are derived, identifying the collisional transfer contributions to the pressure tensor and heat flux. A Lyapunov functional, $\mathcal{H}[f]$, is identified. For any solution of the kinetic equation, $\mathcal{H}$ decays monotonically in ti…
The shear viscosity in the dilute regime of a model for confined granular matter is studied by simulations and kinetic theory. The model consists on projecting into two dimensions the motion of vibrofluidized granular matter in shallow boxes by modifying the collision rule: besides the restitution coefficient that accounts for the energy dissipation, there is a separation velocity that is added in each collision in the normal direction. The two mechanisms balance on average, producing stationary homogeneous states. Molecular dynamics simulations show that in the steady state the distribution f…
The steady state of a vibrated granular gas confined by a movable piston on the top is discussed. Particular attention is given to the hydrodynamic boundary conditions to be used when solving the inelastic Navier-Stokes equations. The relevance of an exact general condition relating the grain fluxes approaching and moving away from each of the walls is emphasized. It is shown how it can be used to get a consistent hydrodynamic description of the boundaries. The obtained expressions for the fields do not contain any undetermined parameter. Comparison of the theoretical predictions with molecula…
The hydrodynamic equations for a model of a confined quasi-two-dimensional gas of smooth inelastic hard spheres are derived from the Boltzmann equation for the model, using a generalization of the Chapman-Enskog method. The heat and momentum fluxes are calculated to Navier-Stokes order, and the associated transport coefficients are explicitly determined as functions of the coefficient of normal restitution and the velocity parameter involved in the definition of the model. Also an Euler transport term contributing to the energy transport equation is considered. This term arises from the gradie…
A gas of inelastic rough spheres admits a spatially homogeneous base state which turns into a hydrodynamic state after a finite relaxation time. We show that this relaxation time is hardly dependent on the degree of inelasticity but increases dramatically with decreasing roughness. An accurate description of translational-rotational velocity correlations at all times is also provided. At a given inelasticity, the roughness parameter can be tuned to produce a huge distortion from the Maxwellian distribution function. The results are obtained from a Grad-like solution of the Boltzmann-Enskog equ…
Confined fluids display complex behavior due to layering and local packing. Here, we disentangle these effects by confining a hard-sphere fluid to the surface of a cylinder, such the circumference extends only over a few particle diameters. We compare the static structure factor and the pressure measured in computer simulations to the Percus-Yevick closure in liquid state theory. A non-monotonic evolution of the static-structure-factor peak and the pressure is observed upon variation of the confining length, similar to a liquid confined between two plates. This indicates that the density profi…
Confined granular fluids, placed in a shallow box that is vibrated vertically, can achieve homogeneous stationary states thanks to energy injection mechanisms that take place throughout the system. These states can be stable even at high densities and inelasticities allowing for a detailed analysis of the hydrodynamic modes that govern the dynamics of granular fluids. Analyzing the decay of the time correlation functions it is shown that there is a crossover between a quasielastic regime in which energy evolves as a slow mode, to a inelastic regime, with energy slaved to the other conserved fi…
We report the emergence of a giant Mpemba effect in the uniformly heated gas of inelastic rough hard spheres: The initially hotter sample may cool sooner than the colder one, even when the initial temperatures differ by more than one order of magnitude. In order to understand this behavior, it suffices to consider the simplest Maxwellian approximation for the velocity distribution in a kinetic approach. The largeness of the effect stems from the fact that the rotational and translational temperatures, which obey two coupled evolution equations, are comparable. Our theoretical predictions agree…
Conditions for the stability under linear perturbations around the homogeneous cooling state are studied for dilute granular gases of inelastic and rough hard disks or spheres with constant coefficients of normal ($α$) and tangential ($β$) restitution. After a formally exact linear stability analysis of the Navier--Stokes--Fourier hydrodynamic equations in terms of the translational ($d_t$) and rotational ($d_r$) degrees of freedom, the transport coefficients derived in the companion paper [A. Megías and A. Santos, "Hydrodynamics of granular gases of inelastic and rough hard disks or spheres. …
We study a two-dimensional granular gas of inelastic spheres subject to multiplicative driving proportional to a power $|v(\vec{x})|^δ$ of the local particle velocity $v(\vec{x})$. The steady state properties of the model are examined for different values of $δ$, and compared with the homogeneous case $δ=0$. A driving linearly proportional to $v(\vec{x})$ seems to reproduce some experimental observations which could not be reproduced by a homogeneous driving. Furthermore, we obtain that the system can be homogenized even for strong dissipation, if a driving inversely proportional to
We consider the three-dimensional dynamics of systems of many interacting hard spheres, each individually confined to a dispersive environment, and show that the macroscopic limit of such systems is characterized by a coefficient of heat conduction whose value reduces to a dimensional formula in the limit of vanishingly small rate of interaction. It is argued that this limit arises from an effective loss of memory. Similarities with the diffusion of a tagged particle in binary mixtures are emphasized.
The complex behavior of confined fluids arising due to a competition between layering and local packing can be disentangled by considering quasi-confined liquids, where periodic boundary conditions along the confining direction restore translational invariance. This system provides a means to investigate the interplay of the relevant length scales of the confinement and the local order. We provide a mode-coupling theory of the glass transition (MCT) for quasi-confined liquids and elaborate an efficient method for the numerical implementation. The nonergodicity parameters in MCT are compared to…
Non-Newtonian transport properties of an inertial suspension of inelastic rough hard spheres under simple shear flow are determined from the Boltzmann kinetic equation. The influence of the interstitial gas on rough hard spheres is modeled via a Fokker-Planck generalized equation for rotating spheres accounting for the coupling of both the translational and rotational degrees of freedom of grains with the background viscous gas. The generalized Fokker-Planck term is the sum of two ordinary Fokker-Planck differential operators in linear $\mathbf{v}$ and angular $\boldsymbolω$ velocity space. As…
We show that hard spheres confined between two parallel hard plates pack denser with periodic adaptive prismatic structures which are composed of alternating prisms of spheres. The internal structure of the prisms adapts to the slit height which results in close packings for a range of plate separations, just above the distance where three intersecting square layers fit exactly between the plates. The adaptive prism phases are also observed in real-space experiments on confined sterically stabilized colloids and in Monte Carlo simulations at finite pressure.
We investigate the ground state of a classical two-dimensional system of hard-sphere dipoles confined between two hard walls. Using lattice sum minimization techniques we reveal that at fixed wall separations, a first-order transition from a vacuum to a straight one-dimensional chain of dipoles occurs upon increasing the density. Further increase in the density yields the stability of an undulated chain as well as nontrivial buckling structures. We explore the close-packed configurations of dipoles in detail, and we find that, in general, the densest packings of dipoles possess complex magneti…
A hierarchy of equations was introduced recently to describe the kinetics of homogeneous cooling of the gas of inelastic hard spheres. It is argued that this hierarchy does not describe this system accurately, and a simple test for this is proposed. A stochastic interpretation of the hierarchy is presented.
We explore the possibility of describing the main transport properties of a granular gas by means of a model consisting of elastic hard spheres under the action of a drag force that mimics the inelastic cooling of the granular gas. Direct Monte Carlo simulations of the Boltzmann equation show a good agreement between the results for a gas of inelastic hard spheres and those for a gas of driven elastic hard spheres in the simple shear flow state. This approximate equivalence between both systems is exploited to extend known kinetic models for elastic collisions to the inelastic case.
The free cooling process in the inelastic hard sphere system is studied by analysing the data from large scale molecular dynamics simulations on a three dimensional system. The initial energy decay, the velocity distribution function, and the velocity correlation functions are calculated to be compared with theoretical predictions. The energy decay rate in the homogeneous cooling state is slightly but distinctively smaller than that expected from the independent collision assumption. The form of the one particle velocity distribution is found not to be stationary. These contradict to the predi…
The Boltzmann equation for inelastic and rough hard spheres is considered as a model of a dilute granular gas. In this model, the collisions are characterized by constant coefficients of normal and tangential restitution and hence the translational and rotational degrees of freedom are coupled. A normal solution to the Boltzmann equation is obtained by means of the Chapman-Enskog method for states near the homogeneous cooling state. The analysis is carried out to first order in the spatial gradients of the number density, the flow velocity, and the granular temperature. The constitutive equati…
In the preceding paper (cond-mat/0405252), we have conjectured that the main transport properties of a dilute gas of inelastic hard spheres (IHS) can be satisfactorily captured by an equivalent gas of elastic hard spheres (EHS), provided that the latter are under the action of an effective drag force and their collision rate is reduced by a factor $(1+α)/2$ (where $α$ is the constant coefficient of normal restitution). In this paper we test the above expectation in a paradigmatic nonequilibrium state, namely the simple or uniform shear flow, by performing Monte Carlo computer simulations of th…
The transport coefficients for dilute granular gases of inelastic and rough hard disks or spheres with constant coefficients of normal ($α$) and tangential ($β$) restitution are obtained in a unified framework as functions of the number of translational ($d_t$) and rotational ($d_r$) degrees of freedom. The derivation is carried out by means of the Chapman--Enskog method with a Sonine-like approximation in which, in contrast to previous approaches, the reference distribution function for angular velocities does not need to be specified. The well-known case of purely smooth $d$-dimensional part…
In a recent paper [A. Santos, G. M. Kremer, and V. Garzó, \emph{Prog. Theor. Phys. Suppl.} \textbf{184}, 31-48 (2010)] the collisional energy production rates associated with the translational and rotational granular temperatures in a granular fluid mixture of inelastic rough hard spheres have been derived. In the present paper the energy production rates are explicitly decomposed into equipartition rates (tending to make all the temperatures equal) plus genuine cooling rates (reflecting the collisional dissipation of energy). Next the homogeneous free cooling state of a binary mixture is anal…
Granular gaseous mixtures under rapid flow conditions are usually modeled by a multicomponent system of smooth inelastic hard spheres with constant coefficients of normal restitution. In the low density regime an adequate framework is provided by the set of coupled inelastic Boltzmann equations. Due to the intricacy of the inelastic Boltzmann collision operator, in this paper we propose a simpler model of elastic hard spheres subject to the action of an effective drag force, which mimics the effect of dissipation present in the original granular gas. The Navier--Stokes transport coefficients f…
The Boltzmann collision operator for a dilute granular gas of inelastic rough hard spheres is much more intricate than its counterpart for inelastic smooth spheres. Now the one-body distribution function depends not only on the translational velocity of the center of mass but also on the angular velocity of the particle. Moreover, the collision rules couple both velocities, involving not only the coefficient of normal restitution but also the coefficient of tangential restitution. The aim of this paper is to propose an extension to inelastic rough particles of a Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook-like kine…
Disordered jammed packings under confinement have received considerably less attention than their \textit{bulk} counterparts and yet arise in a variety of practical situations. In this work, we study binary sphere packings that are confined between two parallel hard planes, and generalize the Torquato-Jiao (TJ) sequential linear programming algorithm [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 82}, 061302 (2010)] to obtain putative maximally random jammed (MRJ) packings that are exactly isostatic with high fidelity over a large range of plane separation distances $H$, small to large sphere radius ratio $α$ and small s…
Starting from a recent derivation of the energy production rates in terms of the number of translational and rotational degrees of freedom, a comparative study on different granular temperatures in gas mixtures of inelastic and rough disks or spheres is carried out. Both the homogeneous freely cooling state and the state driven by a stochastic thermostat are considered. It is found that the relaxation number of collisions per particle is generally smaller for disks than for spheres, the mean angular velocity relaxing more rapidly than the temperature ratios. In the asymptotic regime of the und…
In this paper we numerically investigate the influence of dissipation during particle collisions in an homogeneous turbulent velocity field by coupling a discrete element method to a Lattice-Boltzmann simulation with spectral forcing. We show that even at moderate particle volume fractions the influence of dissipative collisions is important. We also investigate the transition from a regime where the turbulent velocity field significantly influences the spatial distribution of particles to a regime where the distribution is mainly influenced by particle collisions.
The inherent structure landscape for a system of hard spheres confined to a hard cylindrical channel, such that spheres can only contact their first and second neighbours, is studied using an analytical model that extends previous results [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 025702 (2015)] to provide a comprehensive picture of jammed packings over a range of packing densities. In the model, a packing is described as an arrangement of $k$ helical sections, separated by defects, that have alternating helical twist directions and where all spheres satisfy local jamming constraints. The structure of each helica…
The dynamical properties of a tracer or impurity particle immersed in a host gas of inelastic and rough hard spheres in the homogeneous cooling state is studied. Specifically, the breakdown of energy equipartition as characterized by the tracer/host ratios of translational and rotational temperatures is analyzed by exploring a wide spectrum of values of the control parameters of the system (masses, moments of inertia, sizes, and coefficients of restitution). Three complementary approaches are considered. On the theoretical side, the Boltzmann and Boltzmann--Lorentz equations (both assuming the…
We use a series of molecular dynamics simulations, and analytical theory, to demonstrate that a system of hard spheres confined to a narrow cylindrical channel exhibits a continuous phase transition from an isotropic fluid at low densities, to an orientationally ordered, but translationally disordered, helical fluid at high densities. The ordered fluid phase contains small sections of helix separated by topological defects that change the direction of the twist, altering the local chirailty. The defects break up the translational order, but the fluid develops long range orientational order. An…
We calculate in this work the Navier-Stokes transport coefficients from the Boltzmann equation for $d$-dimensional inelastic Maxwell models. By granular gas we mean here a low density system of identical spheres that lose a fraction of their kinetic energy after collisions. In the present work, the granular gas is fluidized by the presence of a thermostat that aides the system to reach a steady state. The thermostat is composed by two terms: a random force and a drag force. The combined action of both forces, that act homogeneously on the granular gas, tries to mimic the interaction of the set…
This paper deals with solutions of the nonlinear Boltzmann equation for spatially uniform freely cooling inelastic Maxwell models for large times and for large velocities, and the nonuniform convergence to these limits. We demonstrate how the velocity distribution approaches in the scaling limit to a similarity solution with a power law tail for general classes of initial conditions and derive a transcendental equation from which the exponents in the tails can be calculated. Moreover on the basis of the available analytic and numerical results for inelastic hard spheres and inelastic Maxwell m…
We study the phase behavior of hard spheres confined between two parallel hard plates using extensive computer simulations. We determine the full equilibrium phase diagram for arbitrary densities and plate separations from one to five hard-sphere diameters using free energy calculations. We find a first-order fluid-solid transition, which corresponds to either capillary freezing or melting depending on the plate separation. The coexisting solid phase consists of crystalline layers with either triangular or square symmetry. Increasing the plate separation, we find a sequence of crystal structur…
The aim of this work is to explore the combined effect of polydispersity and roughness on the partial energy production rates and on the total cooling rate of a granular fluid mixture. We consider a mixture of inelastic rough hard spheres of different number densities, masses, diameters, moments of inertia, and mutual coefficients of normal and tangential restitution. Starting from the first equation of the BBGKY hierarchy, the collisional energy production rates associated with the translational and rotational temperatures ($T_i^\text{tr}$ and $T_i^\text{rot}$) are expressed in terms of two-b…
N.N. Bogolyubov discovered that the Boltzmann-Enskog kinetic equation has microscopic solutions. They have the form of sums of delta-functions and correspond to trajectories of individual hard spheres. But the rigorous sense of the product of the delta-functions in the collision integral was not discussed. Here we give a rigorous sense to these solutions by introduction of a special regularization of the delta-functions. The crucial observation is that the collision integral of the Boltzmann-Enskog equation coincides with that of the first equation of the BBGKY hierarchy for hard spheres if th…
Extensions to kinetic theory and hydrodynamic models are proposed that account for the existence of multi-particle contacts. In the presence of multi-particle contacts (involving elastic, reversible, potential contact energy), dissipation of the translational (kinetic) energy is reduced and a class of different models lead to deviations from the classical inelastic hard sphere (IHS) homogeneous cooling state (HCS), as examined here. The theoretical results are found to be in perfect agreement with the numerical simulations.
The non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and kinetic theory for a model of a confined quasi-two-dimensional gas of inelastic hard spheres is presented. The dynamics of the particles includes an effective mechanism to transfer the energy injected in the vertical direction to the horizontal degrees of freedom. The Enskog approximation is formulated and used as the basis to investigate the temperature and the distribution function of the steady state eventually reached by the system. An exact scaling of the distribution function of the system having implications on the form of its moments is poi…
We study here the steady state attained in a granular gas of inelastic rough spheres that is subject to a spatially uniform random volume force. The stochastic force has the form of the so-called white noise and acts by adding impulse to the particle translational velocities. We work out an analytical solution of the corresponding velocity distribution function from a Sonine polynomial expansion that displays energy non-equipartition between the translational and rotational modes, translational and rotational kurtoses, and translational-rotational velocity correlations. By comparison with a nu…
A linear stability analysis of the hydrodynamic equations of a model for confined quasi-two-dimensional granular gases is carried out. The stability analysis is performed around the homogeneous steady state (HSS) reached eventually by the system after a transient regime. In contrast to previous studies (which considered dilute or quasielastic systems), our analysis is based on the results obtained from the inelastic Enskog kinetic equation, which takes into account the (nonlinear) dependence of the transport coefficients and the cooling rate on dissipation and applies to moderate densities. As…
We study the stationary state of a rough granular sphere immersed in a thermal bath composed of point particles. When the center of mass of the sphere is fixed the stationary angular velocity distribution is shown to be Gaussian with an effective temperature lower than that of the bath. For a freely moving rough sphere coupled to the thermostat via inelastic collisions we find a condition under which the joint distribution of the translational and rotational velocities is a product of Gaussian distributions with the same effective temperature. In this rather unexpected case we derive a formula…
We report the observation of the homogenous nucleation of crystals in a dense layer of steel spheres confined between two horizontal plates vibrated vertically. Above a critical vibration amplitude, two-layer crystals with square symmetry were found to coexist in steady state with a surrounding granular liquid. By analogy to equilibrium hard sphere systems, the phase behavior can be explained through entropy maximization. However, dramatic non-equilibrium effects are present, including a significant difference in the granular temperatures of the two phases.
The most widely used model for granular gases is perhaps the inelastic hard-sphere model (IHSM), where the grains are assumed to be perfectly smooth spheres colliding with a constant coefficient of normal restitution. A much more tractable model is the inelastic Maxwell model (IMM), in which the velocity-dependent collision rate is replaced by an effective mean-field constant. This simplification has been taken advantage of by many researchers to find a number of exact results within the IMM. On the other hand, both the IHSM and IMM neglect the impact of roughness -- generally present in real …
Hard-sphere fluids confined between parallel plates a distance $D$ apart are studied for a wide range of packing fractions, including also the onset of crystallization, applying Monte Carlo simulation techniques and density functional theory. The walls repel the hard spheres (of diameter $σ$) with a Weeks-Chandler-Andersen (WCA) potential $V_{WCA}(z) = 4 ε[(σ_w/z)^{12}-(σ_w/z)^6 + 1/4]$, with range $σ_w = σ/2$. We vary the strength $ε$ over a wide range and the case of simple hard walls is also treated for comparison. By the variation of $ε$ one can change both the surface excess packing fract…
We prove the existence and uniqueness of an equilibrium state with unit mass to the dissipative linear Boltzmann equation with hard--spheres collision kernel describing inelastic interactions of a gas particles with a fixed background. The equilibrium state is a universal Maxwellian distribution function with the same velocity as field particles and with a non--zero temperature lower than the background one, which depends on the details of the binary collision. Thanks to the H--theorem we then prove strong convergence of the solution to the Boltzmann equation towards the equilibrium.
The accuracy of a model to describe the horizontal dynamics of a confined quasi-two-dimensional system of inelastic hard spheres is discussed by comparing its predictions for the relaxation of the temperature in an homogenous system with molecular dynamics simulation results for the original system. A reasonably good agreement is found. Next, the model is used to investigate the peculiarities of the nonlinear evolution of the temperature when the parameter controlling the energy injection is instantaneously changed while the system was relaxing. This can be considered as a non-equilibrium gene…
A linear stability analysis of the hydrodynamic equations with respect to the homogeneous cooling state is carried out to identify the conditions for stability of a granular gas of rough hard spheres. The description is based on the results for the transport coefficients derived from the Boltzmann equation for inelastic rough hard spheres [Phys. Rev. E 90, 022205 (2014)], which take into account the complete nonlinear dependence of the transport coefficients and the cooling rate on the coefficients of normal and tangential restitution. As expected, linear stability analysis shows that a doubly…
We analyze the deviations from Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics found in recent experiments studying velocity distributions in two-dimensional granular gases driven into a non-equilibrium stationary state by a strong vertical vibration. We show that in its simplest version, the ``stochastic thermostat'' model of heated inelastic hard spheres, contrary to what has been hitherto stated, is incompatible with the experimental data, although predicting a reminiscent high velocity stretched exponential behavior with an exponent 3/2. The experimental observations lead to refine a recently proposed random…
Recently several authors studied the segregation of particles for a system composed of mono-dispersed inelastic spheres contained in a box divided by a wall in the middle. The system exhibited a symmetry breaking leading to an overpopulation of particles in one side of the box. Here we study the segregation of a mixture of particles composed of inelastic hard spheres and fluidized by a vibrating wall. Our numerical simulations show a rich phenomenology: horizontal segregation and periodic behavior. We also propose an empirical system of ODEs representing the proportion of each type of particle…
