We study the meromorphic open-string vertex algebras and their modules over the two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds that are complete, connected, orientable, and of constant sectional curvature $K\neq 0$. Using the parallel tensors, we explicitly determine a basis for the meromorphic open-string vertex algebra, its modules generated by eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator, and their irreducible quotients. We also study the modules generated by lowest weight subspace satisfying a geometrically interesting condition. It is showed that every irreducible module of this type is generated by some (local) eigenfunction on the manifold. A classification is given for modules of this type admitting a composition series of finite length. In particular and remarkably, if every composition factor is generated by eigenfunctions of eigenvalue $p(p-1)K$ for some $p\in \mathbb{Z}_+$, then the module is completely reducible.
A notion of meromorphic open-string vertex algebra is introduced. A meromorphic open-string vertex algebra is an open-string vertex algebra in the sense of Kong and the author satisfying additional rationality (or meromorphicity) conditions for vertex operators. The vertex operator map for a meromorphic open-string vertex algebra satisfies rationality and associativity but in general does not satisfy the Jacobi identity, commutativity, the commutator formula, the skew-symmetry or even the associator formula. Given a vector space \mathfrak{h}, we construct a meromorphic open-string vertex algeb…
We study representations of the meromorphic open-string vertex algebra (MOSVAs hereafter) defined in [H3], a noncommutative generalization of vertex (operator) algebra. We start by recalling the definition of a MOSVA $V$ and left $V$-modules in [H3]. Then we define right $V$-modules and $V$-bimodules that reflect the noncommutative nature of $V$. When $V$ satisfies a condition on the order of poles of the correlation function (which we call pole-order condition), we prove that the rationality of products of two vertex operators implies the rationality of products of any numbers of vertex opera…
This paper generalizes Huang's cohomology theory of grading-restricted vertex algebras to meromorphic open-string vertex algebras (MOSVAs hereafter), which are noncommutative generalizations of grading-restricted vertex algebras introduced by Huang. The vertex operators for these algebras satisfy associativity but do not necessarily satisfy the commutativity. Moreover, the MOSVA and its bimodules considered in this paper do not necessarily have finite-dimensional homogeneous subspaces, though we do require that they have lower-bounded gradings. The construction and results in this paper will b…
We give a criterion for the complete reducibility of modules satisfying a composability condition for a meromorphic open-string vertex algebra $V$ using the first cohomology of the algebra. For a $V$-bimodule $M$, let $\hat{H}^{1}_{\infty}(V, M)$ be the first cohomology of $V$ with the coefficients in $M$. Let $\hat{Z}^{1}_{\infty}(V, M)$ be the subspace of $\hat{H}^{1}_{\infty}(V, M)$ canonically isomorphic to the space of derivations obtained from the zero mode of the right vertex operators of weight $1$ elements such that the difference between the skew-symmetric opposite action of the left…
We introduce notions of open-string vertex algebra, conformal open-string vertex algebra and variants of these notions. These are ``open-string-theoretic,'' ``noncommutative'' generalizations of the notions of vertex algebra and of conformal vertex algebra. Given an open-string vertex algebra, we show that there exists a vertex algebra, which we call the ``meromorphic center,'' inside the original algebra such that the original algebra yields a module and also an intertwining operator for the meromorphic center. This result gives us a general method for constructing open-string vertex algebras…
We introduce the notion of meromorphic tensor category and illustrate it in several examples. They include representations of quantum affine algebras, chiral algebras of Beilinson and Drinfeld, G-vertex algebras of Borcherds, and representations of GL over a local field. Hopefully the formalism will accomodate various tensor structures arising in relation to the quantized Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations and deformed CFT
The notion of vertex operator coalgebra is presented and motivated via the geometry of conformal field theory. Specifically, we describe the category of geometric vertex operator coalgebras, whose objects have comultiplicative structures meromorphically induced by conformal equivalence classes of worldsheets. We then show this category is isomorphic to the category of vertex operator coalgebras, which is defined in the language of formal algebra. The latter has several characteristics which give it the flavor of a coalgebra with respect to the structure of a vertex operator algebra and several…
We give a new construction of the moonshine VOA V^{\natural} over the real number field. We proved that V^{\natural} has a positive definite invariant bilinear form and its full automorphism group is the Monster simple group. We also construct an infinite series of meromorphic VOAs whose full automorphism groups are finite. We calculate the trace form on V^{\natural} for some element of the Monster.
A vertex algebra is an algebraic counterpart of a two-dimensional conformal field theory. We give a new definition of a vertex algebra which includes chiral algebras as a special case, but allows for fields which are neither meromorphic nor anti-meromorphic. To any complex torus equipped with a flat Kahler metric and a closed 2-form we associate an N=2 superconformal vertex algebra (N=2 SCVA) in the sense of our definition. We find a criterion for two different tori to produce isomorphic N=2 SCVA's. We show that for algebraic tori isomorphism of N=2 SCVA's implies the equivalence of the derive…
Semi-infinite forms on the moduli spaces of genus-zero Riemann surfaces with punctures and local coordinates are introduced. A partial operad for semi-infinite forms is constructed. Using semi-infinite forms and motivated by a partial suboperad of the partial operad for semi-infinite forms, topological vertex partial operads of type $k<0$ and strong topological vertex partial operads of type $k<0$ are constructed. It is proved that the category of (locally-)grading-restricted (strong) topological vertex operator algebras of type $k<0$ and the category of (weakly) meromorphic ${\Bbb Z}\times {\…
The Schur-index of the $(A_1, X_n)$-Argyres-Douglas theory is conjecturally a character of a vertex operator algebra. Here such vertex algebras are found for the $A_{\text{odd}}$ and $D_{\text{even}}$-type Argyres-Douglas theories. The vertex operator algebra corresponding to $A_{2p-3}$-Argyres-Douglas theory is the logarithmic $\mathcal B_p$-algebra of [1], while the one corresponding to $D_{2p}$, denoted by $\mathcal W_p$, is realized as a non-regular Quantum Hamiltonian reduction of $L_{k}(\mathfrak{sl}_{p+1})$ at level $k=-(p^2-1)/p$. For all $n$ one observes that the quantum Hamiltonian r…
A cohomological criterion for the complete reducibility of modules of finite length satisfying a composability condition for a meromorphic open-string vertex algebra $V$ has been given by Qi and the author. In order to apply this criterion, one needs to determine what types of $V$-modules satisfy the composability condition. In this paper, we prove that the composability condition is satisfied by generalized modules in a suitable category for a grading-restricted vertex algebra satisfying natural conditions.
In [H5] (q-alg/9512024) and [H7] (q-alg/9704008), the author introduced the notion of intertwining operator algebra, a nonmeromorphic generalization of the notion of vertex operator algebra involving monodromies. The problem of constructing intertwining operator algebras from representations of suitable vertex operator algebras were solved implicitly earlier in [H3] (q-alg/9505019). In the present paper, we generalize the geometric and operadic formulation of the notion of vertex operator algebra given in [H1], [H2], [HL1] (hep-th/9301009), [HL2] and [H6] to the notion of intertwining operator…
A new rigorous approach to conformal field theory is presented. The basic objects are families of complex-valued amplitudes, which define a meromorphic conformal field theory (or chiral algebra) and which lead naturally to the definition of topological vector spaces, between which vertex operators act as continuous operators. In fact, in order to develop the theory, Möbius invariance rather than full conformal invariance is required but it is shown that every Möbius theory can be extended to a conformal theory by the construction of a Virasoro field. In this approach, a representation of a con…
We consider several vertex operator (super)algebras closely related to $V_{-1}(\frak{sl} (n) )$, $n \ge 3$ : (a) the parafermionic subalgebra $K(\frak{sl}(n),-1)$ for which we completely describe its inner structure, (b) the vacuum algebra $Ω(V_{-1}(\frak{sl} (n) ) )$, and (c) an infinite extension $\mathcal U$ of $V_{-1}(\frak{sl} (n) )$ constructed by combining certain irreducible ordinary modules with integral weights. It turns out that $\mathcal U$ is isomorphic to the coset vertex algebra $\frak{psl}(n|n) _1 / \frak{sl}(n)_1$, $n \ge 3$. We show that $V_{-1}(\frak{sl}(n))$ admits precisel…
A full rational CFT, consistent on all orientable world sheets, can be constructed from the underlying chiral CFT, i.e. a vertex algebra, its representation category C, and the system of chiral blocks, once we select a symmetric special Frobenius algebra A in the category C [I]. Here we show that the construction of [I] can be extended to unoriented world sheets by specifying one additional datum: a reversion on A - an isomorphism from the opposed algebra of A to A that squares to the twist. A given full CFT on oriented surfaces can admit inequivalent reversions, which give rise to different a…
