Given a connected and bridgeless graph $G$, let $\mathscr{D}(G)$ be the family of strong orientations of $G$. The orientation number of $G$ is defined to be $\bar{d}(G):=min\{d(D)|D\in \mathscr{D}(G)\}$, where $d(D)$ is the diameter of the digraph $D$. In this paper, we focus on the orientation number of complete tripartite graphs. We prove a conjecture raised by Rajasekaran and Sampathkumar. Specifically, for $q\ge p\ge 3$, if $\bar{d}(K(2,p,q))=2$, then $q\le{{p}\choose{\lfloor{p/2}\rfloor}}$. We also present some sufficient conditions on $p$ and $q$ for $\bar{d}(K(p,p,q))=2$.
This paper discusses the enumeration for the total number of all rooted spanning forests of the labeled complete tripartite graph. We enumerate the total number by a combinatorial decomposition.
For even $n$ we prove that the genus of the complete tripartite graph $K_{n,n,1}$ is $\lceil (n-1) (n-2)/4 \rceil$. This is the least number of bridges needed to build a complete $n$-way road interchange where changing lanes is not allowed. Both the theoretical result, and the surprising link to modelling road intersections are new.
The equitable coloring problem, introduced by Meyer in 1973, has received considerable attention and research. Recently, Wu et al. introduced the concept of equitable (t,k)-tree-coloring, which can be viewed as a generalization of proper equitable t-coloring. The strong equitable vertex k-arboricity of complete bipartite equipartition graphs was investigated in 2013. In this paper, we study the exact value of the strong equitable vertex 3-arboricity of complete equipartition tripartite graphs.
The problem of decomposing a complete tripartite graph into 5-cycles was first proposed in 1995 by Mahmoodian and Mirzakhani and since then many attempts have been made to decompose such graphs into 5-cycles. Such attempts were partially successful but parts of the problem still remain open. In this paper, we investigate the problem deeper, decompose more tripartite graphs into 5-cycles, and introduce the Graph Adjacency Matrix (GAM) method for cycle decomposition in general. GAM method transforms the cycle decomposition problem to covering squares with certain polygons. This new formulation i…
The closed neighborhood $N_G[e]$ of an edge $e$ in a graph $G$ is the set consisting of $e$ and of all edges having an end-vertex in common with $e$. Let $f$ be a function on $E(G)$, the edge set of $G$, into the set $\{-1,1\}$. If $\sum_{x\in{N[e]}}f(x)\geq 1$ for each edge $e \in E(G)$, then $f$ is called a signed edge dominating function of $G$. The signed edge domination number of $G$ is the minimum weight of a signed edge dominating function of $G$. In this paper, we find the signed edge domination number of the complete tripartite graph $K_{m,n,p}$, where $1\leq m\leq n$ and $p\geq m+n$.…
Let $P(G, x)$ be the chromatic polynomial of a graph $G$. A graph $G$ is called \textit{chromatically unique} if for any graph $H,\, P(G, x) = P(H, x)$ implies that $G$ and $H$ are isomorphic. In this paper we show that full tripartite graph $K(n_1, n_2, n_3)$ is chromatically unique if $n_1 \geq n_2 \geq n_2 \geq n_3 \geq 2, n_1 - n_3 \leq 5$ and $n_1 + n_2 + n_3 \not \equiv 2 \mod{3}$.

A $(q,r)$\emph{-tree-coloring} of a graph $G$ is a $q$-coloring of vertices of $G$ such that the subgraph induced by each color class is a forest of maximum degree at most $r.$ An \emph{equitable $(q, r)$-tree-coloring} of a graph $G$ is a $(q,r)$-tree-coloring such that the sizes of any two color classes differ by at most one. Let the \emph{strong equitable vertex $r$-arboricity} be the minimum $p$ such that $G$ has an equitable $(q, r)$-tree-coloring for every $q\geq p.$ In this paper, we find the exact value for each $va^\equiv_2(K_{m,n})$ and $va^\equiv_2(K_{l,m,n}).$
Mantel's theorem says that among all triangle-free graphs of a given order the balanced complete bipartite graph is the unique graph of maximum size. We prove an analogue of this result for 3-graphs. Let $K_4^-=\{123,124,134\}$, $F_6=\{123,124,345,156\}$ and $\mathcal{F}=\{K_4^-,F_6\}$: for $n\neq 5$ the unique $\mathcal{F}$-free 3-graph of order $n$ and maximum size is the balanced complete tripartite 3-graph $S_3(n)$ (for $n=5$ it is $C_5^{(3)}=\{123,234,345,145,125\}$). This extends an old result of Bollobás that $S_3(n) $ is the unique 3-graph of maximum size with no copy of $K_4^-=\{123,1…
The problem of finding necessary and sufficient conditions to decompose a complete tripartite graph $K_{r,s,t}$ into 5-cycles was first considered by E.S. Mahmoodian and Maryam Mirzakhani (1995). They stated some necessary conditions and conjectured that those conditions are also sufficient. Since then, many cases of the problem have been solved by various authors; however, the case when the partite sets $r\leq s\leq t$ have odd and distinct sizes remained open. We show the conjecture is true when $r$, $s$ and $t$ are all multiples of 5, $t+90 \leq \frac{4rs}{r+s}$, and $t \neq s+10$.
The crossing number cr(G) of a graph G is the minimum number of crossings in a nondegenerate planar drawing of G. The rectilinear crossing number cr'(G) of G is the minimum number of crossings in a rectilinear nondegenerate planar drawing (with edges as straight line segments) of G. Zarankiewicz proved in 1952 that cr'(K_{n_1,n_2})\le Z(n_1,n_2):= n_1/2*(n_1-1)/2*n_2/2*(n_2-1)/2. We define an analogous bound A(n_1,n_2,n_3) for the complete tripartite graph K_{n_1,n_2,n_3}, and prove that cr'(K_{n_1,n_2,n_3})\le A({n_1,n_2,n_3}). We also show that for n large enough, 0.973 A(n,n,n) \le cr'(K_{n…

A graph H is common if the number of monochromatic copies of H in a 2-edge-colouring of the complete graph is minimised by the random colouring. Burr and Rosta, extending a famous conjecture by Erdos, conjectured that every graph is common. The conjectures by Erdos and by Burr and Rosta were disproved by Thomason and by Sidorenko, respectively, in the late 1980s. Collecting new examples for common graphs had not seen much progress since then, although very recently, a few more graphs are verified to be common by the flag algebra method or the recent progress on Sidorenko's conjecture. Our cont…
For an integer $k \geq 2$, an ordered $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}=(H,<)$ is a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ together with a fixed linear ordering $<$ of its vertex set. The ordered Ramsey number $\overline{R}(\mathcal{H},\mathcal{G})$ of two ordered $k$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{G}$ is the smallest $N \in \mathbb{N}$ such that every red-blue coloring of the hyperedges of the ordered complete $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{K}^{(k)}_N$ on $N$ vertices contains a blue copy of $\mathcal{H}$ or a red copy of $\mathcal{G}$. The ordered Ramsey numbers are quite extensivel…
It is known that complete multipartite graphs are determined by their distance spectrum but not by their adjacency spectrum. The Seidel spectrum of a graph $G$ on more than one vertex does not determine the graph, since any graph obtained from $G$ by Seidel switching has the same Seidel spectrum. We consider $G$ to be determined by its Seidel spectrum, up to switching, if any graph with the same spectrum is switching equivalent to a graph isomorphic to $G$. It is shown that any graph which has the same spectrum as a complete $k$-partite graph is switching equivalent to a complete $k$-partite g…
The main contribution of this paper is a formula for the number of acyclic orientations of a complete bipartite, $K_{n_1,n_2},$ revealing that it is equal to the poly-Bernoulli number $B_{n_1}^{(-n_2)}$ introduced in 1997 by Kaneko. We also give a simple bijective identification of acyclic orientations and lonesum matrices, confirming a 2008 result of Brewbaker, and show that the poly-Bernoulli numbers behave concavely, as well being symmetric. A second goal is to explore the behaviour of more general complete $r$-partite graphs in the space of the number of acyclic orientations. We prove that…
Building on previous work by Cameron et al. in [3], we give a recurrence for computing the number of acyclic orientations of complete $k$-partite graphs, which can be implemented to obtain a dynamic programming algorithm running in time $n^{O(k)}$, where $n$ is the number of vertices in the graph. We prove our result by using a relationship between the number of acyclic orientations and the number of Hamiltonian paths in complete $k$-partite graphs and providing a recurrence for the latter quantity. We give a simple extension of our algorithm to the situation when we are an edge removal away f…
Let the diameter cover number, $D^t_r(G)$, denote the least integer $d$ such that under any $r$-coloring of the edges of the graph $G$, there exists a collection of $t$ monochromatic subgraphs of diameter at most $d$ such that every vertex of $G$ is contained in at least one of the subgraphs. We explore the diameter cover number with two colors and two subgraphs when $G$ is a complete multipartite graph with at least three parts. We determine exactly the value of $D_2^2(G)$ for all complete tripartite graphs $G$, and almost all complete multipartite graphs with more than three parts.
In this paper, first we compute the energy of a special partitioned matrix under some cases. As a consequence, we obtain the reciprocal distance energy of the complete multipartite graph and also we give various other energies of complete multipartite graphs. Next, we show that among all complete k-partite graphs on n vertices, the complete split graph has minimum reciprocal distance energy and the reciprocal distance energy is maximum for the Turan graph. At last, it is shown that the reciprocal distance energy of the complete bipartite graph km,m decreases under deletion of an edge if 2\le m…
The orientation completion problem for a class of oriented graphs asks whether a given partially oriented graph can be completed to an oriented graph in the class by orienting the unoriented edges of the partially oriented graph. Orientation completion problems have been studied recently for several classes of oriented graphs, yielding both polynomial time solutions as well as NP-completeness results. Local tournaments are a well-structured class of oriented graphs that generalize tournaments and their underlying graphs are intimately related to proper circular-arc graphs. According to Skrien,…
The orientation completion problem for a fixed class of oriented graphs asks whether a given partially oriented graph can be completed to an oriented graph in the class. Orientation completion problems have been studied recently for several classes of oriented graphs, yielding both polynomial time solutions and NP-completeness results. Local tournaments are a well-structured class of oriented graphs that generalize tournaments and their underlying graphs are intimately related to proper circular-arc graphs. Proper interval graphs are precisely those which can be oriented as acyclic local tourn…
The $4$-girth-thickness $θ(4,G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of planar subgraphs of girth at least four whose union is $G$. In this paper, we obtain that the 4-girth-thickness of complete tripartite graph $K_{n,n,n}$ is $\big\lceil\frac{n+1}{2}\big\rceil$ except for $θ(4,K_{1,1,1})=2$. And we also show that the $4$-girth-thickness of the complete graph $K_{10}$ is three which disprove the conjecture $θ(4,K_{10})=4$ posed by Rubio-Montiel (Ars Math Contemp 14(2) (2018) 319).
We prove that deciding whether the edge set of a graph can be partitionned into two spanning trees with orientation constraints is NP-complete. If P $\neq$ NP then this disproves a conjecture of Recski.
We consider two orientation problems in a graph, namely the minimization of the sum of all the shortest path lengths and the minimization of the diameter. We show that it is NP-complete to decide whether a graph has an orientation such that the sum of all the shortest paths lengths is at most an integer specified in the input. The proof is a short reduction from a result of Chvátal and Thomassen showing that it is NP-complete to decide whether a graph can be oriented so that its diameter is at most 2. In contrast, for each positive integer k, we describe a linear-time algorithm that decides fo…
Koh and Tay proved a fundamental classification of $G$ vertex-multiplications into three classes $\mathscr{C}_0, \mathscr{C}_1$ and $\mathscr{C}_2$. They also showed that any vertex-multiplication of a tree with diameter at least 3 does not belong to the class $\mathscr{C}_2$. Of interest, $G$ vertex-multiplications are extensions of complete $n$-partite graphs and Gutin characterised complete bipartite graphs with an ingenious use of Sperner's Theorem. In this paper, we investigate vertex-multiplications of trees with diameter $4$ in $\mathscr{C}_0$ (or $\mathscr{C}_1$) and exhibit its intric…
If $G$ is a graph and $\vec H$ is an oriented graph, we write $G\to \vec H$ to say that every orientation of the edges of $G$ contains $\vec H$ as a subdigraph. We consider the case in which $G=G(n,p)$, the binomial random graph. We determine the threshold $p_{\vec H}=p_{\vec H}(n)$ for the property $G(n,p)\to \vec H$ for the cases in which $\vec H$ is an acyclic orientation of a complete graph or of a cycle.
Motivated by the question of how macromolecules assemble, the notion of an {\it assembly tree} of a graph is introduced. Given a graph $G$, the paper is concerned with enumerating the number of assembly trees of $G$, a problem that applies to the macromolecular assembly problem. Explicit formulas or generating functions are provided for the number of assembly trees of several families of graphs, in particular for what we call $(H,ϕ)$-graphs. In some natural special cases, we apply powerful recent results of Zeilberger and Apagodu on multivariate generating functions, and results of Wimp and Ze…

We show that the minimum number of orientations of the edges of the n-vertex complete graph having the property that every triangle is made cyclic in at least one of them is $\lceil\log_2(n-1)\rceil$. More generally, we also determine the minimum number of orientations of $K_n$ such that at least one of them orients some specific $k$-cycles cyclically on every $k$-element subset of the vertex set. The questions answered by these results were motivated by an analogous problem of Vera T. Sós concerning triangles and $3$-edge-colorings. Some variants of the problem are also considered.
In an earlier paper the first two authors have shown that self-complementary graphs can always be oriented in such a way that the union of the oriented version and its isomorphically oriented complement gives a transitive tournament. We investigate the possibilities of generalizing this theorem to decompositions of the complete graph into three or more isomorphic graphs. We find that a complete characterization of when an orientation with similar properties is possible seems elusive. Nevertheless, we give sufficient conditions that generalize the earlier theorem and also imply that decompositi…
Two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ on $n$ vertices are said to pack if there exist injective mappings of their vertex sets into $[n]$ such that the images of their edge sets are disjoint. A longstanding conjecture due to Bollobás and Eldridge and, independently, Catlin, asserts that, if $(Δ_1(G)+1) (Δ_2(G)+1) \le n+1$, then $G_1$ and $G_2$ pack. We consider the validity of this assertion under the additional assumption that $G_1$ or $G_2$ has bounded codegree. In particular, we prove for all $t \ge 2$ that, if $G_1$ contains no copy of the complete bipartite graph $K_{2,t}$ and $Δ_1 > 17 t \cdot Δ_2$,…
We disprove a conjecture of Frank stating that each weakly 2k-connected has a k-vertex-connected orientation. For k at least 3, we also prove that the problem of deciding whether a graph has a k-vertex-connected orientation is NP-complete.
We study biased {\em orientation games}, in which the board is the complete graph $K_n$, and Maker and Breaker take turns in directing previously undirected edges of $K_n$. At the end of the game, the obtained graph is a tournament. Maker wins if the tournament has some property $\mathcal P$ and Breaker wins otherwise. We provide bounds on the bias that is required for a Maker's win and for a Breaker's win in three different games. In the first game Maker wins if the obtained tournament has a cycle. The second game is Hamiltonicity, where Maker wins if the obtained tournament contains a Hamilt…
We study the eternal dominating number and the m-eternal dominating number on digraphs. We generalize known results on graphs to digraphs. We also consider the problem "oriented (m-)eternal domination", consisting in finding an orientation of a graph that minimizes its eternal dominating number. We prove that computing the oriented eternal dominating number is NP-hard and characterize the graphs for which the oriented m-eternal dominating number is 2. We also study these two parameters on trees, cycles, complete graphs, complete bipartite graphs, trivially perfect graphs and different kinds of…
We show that the problem of deciding whether a given graph $G$ has a well-balanced orientation $\vec{G}$ such that $d_{\vec{G}}^+(v)\leq \ell(v)$ for all $v \in V(G)$ for a given function $\ell:V(G)\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$ is NP-complete. We also prove a similar result for best-balanced orientations. This improves a result of Bern\' ath, Iwata, Kir\' aly, Király and Szigeti and answers a question of Frank.
Alon and Yuster proved that the number of orientations of any $n$-vertex graph in which every $K_3$ is transitively oriented is at most $2^{\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor}$ for $n \geq 10^4$ and conjectured that the precise lower bound on $n$ should be $n \geq 8$. We confirm their conjecture and, additionally, characterize the extremal families by showing that the balanced complete bipartite graph with $n$ vertices is the only $n$-vertex graph for which there are exactly $2^{\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor}$ such orientations.
Recall that an excedance of a permutation $π$ is any position $i$ such that $π_i > i$. Inspired by the work of Hopkins, McConville and Propp (Elec. J. Comb., 2017) on sorting using toppling, we say that a permutation is toppleable if it gets sorted by a certain sequence of toppling moves. One of our main results is that the number of toppleable permutations on $n$ letters is the same as those for which excedances happen exactly at $\{1,\dots, \lfloor (n-1)/2 \rfloor\}$. Additionally, we show that the above is also the number of acyclic orientations with unique sink (AUSOs) of the complete bipa…
Nash-Williams proved that every graph has a well-balanced orientation. A key ingredient in his proof is admissible odd-vertex pairings. We show that for two slightly different definitions of admissible odd-vertex pairings, deciding whether a given odd-vertex pairing is admissible is co-NP-complete. This resolves a question of Frank. We also show that deciding whether a given graph has an orientation that satisfies arbitrary local arc-connectivity requirements is NP-complete.
A {\it semi-proper orientation} of a given graph $G$ is a function $(D,w)$ that assigns an orientation $D(e)$ and a positive integer weight $ w(e)$ to each edge $e$ such that for every two adjacent vertices $v$ and $u$, $S_{(D,w)}(v) \neq S_{(D,w)}(u) $, where $S_{(D,w)}(v) $ is the sum of the weights of edges with head $v$ in $D$. The {\it semi-proper orientation number} of a graph $G$, denoted by $\overrightarrowχ_s (G)$, is $ \min_{(D,w)\in Γ} \max_{v\in V(G)} S_{(D,w)}(v) $, where $Γ$ is the set of all semi-proper orientations of $G$. The {\it optimal semi-proper orientation} is a semi-pro…
We consider the Functional Orientation 2-Color problem, which was introduced by Valiant in his seminal paper on holographic algorithms [SIAM J. Comput., 37(5), 2008]. For this decision problem, Valiant gave a polynomial time holographic algorithm for planar graphs of maximum degree 3, and showed that the problem is NP-complete for planar graphs of maximum degree 10. A recent result on defective graph coloring by Corrêa et al. [Australas. J. Combin., 43, 2009] implies that the problem is already hard for planar graphs of maximum degree 8. Together, these results leave open the hardness question…
