We consider the problem of multilayer graphene on a Haldane sphere and determine the Landau level spectrum for this family of systems. This serves as a generalization of the Landau quantization problem of ordinary non-relativistic Haldane sphere and spherical graphene, or Dirac-like particles on a sphere. The Hamiltonian is diagonalized in a concise algebraic fashion exploiting two mutually commuting SU(2) algebras of the problem. Additionally, using exact wave functions we demonstrate computation of Haldane pseudopotentials in the second Landau level. These exact solutions add to the current toolkits of the numerical studies on fractional quantum Hall effects in systems of graphite multilayers.
We propose the model of layered materials, in which each layer is described by the conventional Haldane model, while the inter - layer hopping parameter corresponds to the ABC stacking. We calculate the topological invariant $N_3$ for the resulting model, which is responsible for the conductivity of intrinsic quantum Hall effect. It has been shown that in a certain range of the values of interlayer hopping parameter, the value of $N_3$ is equal to the number of layers multiplied by the topological invariant of each layer. At the same time this value may be calculated using the low energy effec…
We study the Haldane model under strain using a tight-binding approach, and compare the obtained results with the continuum-limit approximation. As in graphene, nonuniform strain leads to a time-reversal preserving pseudo-magnetic field that induces (pseudo) Landau levels. Unlike a real magnetic field, strain lifts the degeneracy of the zeroth pseudo Landau levels at different valleys. Moreover, for the zigzag edge under uniaxial strain, strain removes the degeneracy within the pseudo-Landau levels by inducing a tilt in their energy dispersion. The latter arises from next-to-leading order corr…
We show that valley degeneracy in rotationally faulted multilayer graphene may be broken in the presence of a magnetic field and interlayer commensurations. This happens due to a simultaneous breaking of both time-reversal and inversion symmetries leading to a splitting of Landau levels linear in the field. Our theoretical work is motivated by an experiment [Y. J. Song et al., Nature 467, 185 (2010)] on epitaxially grown multilayer graphene where such linear splitting of Landau levels was observed at moderate fields. We consider both bilayer and trilayer configurations and, although a linear s…
A generalized diffusion Monte Carlo method for solving the many-body Schrödinger equation on curved manifolds is introduced and used to perform a `fixed-phase' simulation of the fractional quantum Hall effect on the Haldane sphere. This new method is used to study the effect of Landau level mixing on the $ν=1/3$ energy gap and the relative stability of spin-polarized and spin-reversed quasielectron excitations.
The Landau level spectra and the quantum Hall effect of ABA-stacked multilayer graphenes are studied in the effective mass approximation. The low-energy effective mass Hamiltonian may be partially diagonalized into an approximate block-diagonal form, with each diagonal block contributing parabolic bands except, in a multilayer with an odd number of layers, for an additional block describing Dirac-like bands with a linear dispersion. We fully include the band parameters and, taking into account the symmetry of the lattice, we analyze their affect on the block-diagonal Hamiltonian. Next-nearest …
We study the density of states in graphene at high magnetic field, when the physics is dominated by strong correlations between electrons. In particular we use the method of Haldane pseudopotentials to focus on almost empty or almost filled Landau levels. We find that, besides the usual Landau level peaks, additional peaks ("sashes") appear in the spectrum. The energies of these peaks are determined by the strength of Haldane's pseudopotentials, but as opposed to the usual two-dimensional gas, when there is a one-to-one correspondence between a Haldane pseudopotential and a peak in the spectru…

When electrons are confined in a two dimensional (2D) system, typical quantum mechanical phenomena such as Landau quantization can be detected. Graphene systems, including the single atomic layer and few-layer stacked crystals, are ideal 2D materials for studying a variety of quantum mechanical problems. In this article, we review the experimental progress in the unusual Landau quantized behaviors of Dirac fermions in monolayer and multilayer graphene by using scanning tunneling microscopy(STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy(STS). Through STS measurement of the strong magnetic fields, dis…
We present a theoretical description of the interlayer magnetoresistance in the layered Dirac fermion system with the application to the organic conductor α-(BEDT-TTF)_2I_3 under pressure. Assuming a non-vertical interlayer tunneling and including higher Landau level effects we calculate the interlayer conductivity using the Kubo formula. We propose a physical picture of the experimentally observed crossover from the negative interlayer magnetoresistance, where the Dirac fermion zero-energy Landau level plays a central role, to the positive interlayer magnetoresistance that is the consequence o…
We show that the chiral multifold fermions present a dual Haldane sphere problem in momentum space. Owing to the Berry monopole at the degenerate point, a dual Landau level emerges in the trace of quantum metric, with which a quantized geometric invariant is defined through a surface integration. We further demonstrate potential manifestations in the measurable, physical observables. With a lower bound derived for the finite spread of Wannier functions, anomalous phase coherence is identified accordingly for the flat band superconductivity. We briefly comment on the stability of these results …
The orbital structure of the quantum Hall ferromagnetic states in the zero-energy Landau level in chiral multilayer graphene (AB, ABC, ABCA, etc.\ stackings) is determined by the exchange interaction with all levels, including deep-lying states in the Dirac sea. This exchange field favors orbitally coherent states with a U(1) orbital symmetry if the filling factor $ν$ is not a multiple of the number of layers. If electrons fill the orbital sector of a fixed spin/valley component to one-half, e.g., at $ν=\pm3,\pm1$ in the bilayer and at $ν=\pm2,\pm6$ in the ABCA four-layer, there is a transitio…
Essential properties of multilayer graphenes are diversified by the number of layers and the stacking configurations. For an $N$-layer system, Landau levels are divided into $N$ groups, with each identified by a dominant sublattice associated with the stacking configuration. We focus on the main characteristics of Landau levels, including the degeneracy, wave functions, quantum numbers, onset energies, field-dependent energy spectra, semiconductor-metal transitions, and crossing patterns, which are reflected in the magneto-optical spectroscopy, scanning tunneling spectroscopy, and quantum tran…
We consider a system of two interacting particles with like but unequal charges in a magnetic field in the planar geometry. We construct a complete basis of states compatible with both the axial symmetry and magnetic translations. The basis is obtained using a canonical transformation that generates effective quasiparticles with modified interactions. We establish a connection of this transformation with the SU(2) algebra and make use of the SU(2) Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formulas for evaluating the interaction matrix elements. We calculate analytically the eigenenergies of the problem (Haldan…
The ground state of the two-dimensional electron systems in Bernal bilayer and ABC-stacked multilayer graphenes in the presence of a strong magnetic field is investigated with the Hartree-Fock approximation. Phase diagrams of the systems are obtained, focusing on charge density wave states including states with vortices of valley pseudospins (called a Skyrme crystal). The single-electron states in these stacked graphenes are given by two-component wave functions. That of the first excited Landau level has the same component as the lowest Landau level of the ordinary two-dimensional electrons. …
We examine the electronic properties of 2D electron gas in black phosphorus multilayers in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, highlighting the role of in-plane anisotropy on various experimental quantities such as ac magneto-conductivity, screening, and magneto-plasmons. We find that resonant structures in the ac conductivity exhibits a red-shift with increasing doping due to inter-band coupling, $γ$. This arises from an extra correction term in the Landau energy spectrum proportional to $n^2γ^2$ ($n$ is Landau index), up to second order in $γ$. We found also that Coulomb interact…
Utilizing the realistic continuum description of twisted bilayer MoTe2 and many-body exact diagonalization calculation, we establish that the second moiré band of twisted bilayer MoTe2, at a small twist angle of approximately 2°, serves as an optimal platform for achieving the long-sought non-Abelian fractional quantum anomalous Hall states without the need for external magnetic fields. Across a wide parameter range, our exact diagonalization calculations reveal that the half-filled second moiré band demonstrates the ground state degeneracy and spectral flows, which are consistent with the pfa…
The thermodynamic properties of the electron gas in multilayer graphene depend strongly on the number of layers and the type of stacking. Here we analyse how those properties change when we vary the number of layers for rhombohedral stacked multilayer graphene and compare our results with those from a conventional two dimensional electron gas. We show that the highly degenerate zero energy Landau level which is partly filled with electrons and partly with holes has a strong influence on the value of the different thermodynamic quantities.
In the continuum low energy model, we calculate the one-loop dynamical polarization functions in ABC-stacked (rhombohedral) $n$-layer graphene in a magnetic field. Neglecting the trigonal warping effects, they are derived as functions of wavevector and frequency at finite chemical potential, temperature, band gap, and the width of Landau levels. The analytic results are given in terms of digamma functions and generalized Laguerre polynomials and have the form of double sums over Landau levels. Various particular limits for polarization functions (static, clean, etc.) are discussed. The intrala…
We propose a mechanism for the quenching of the Shubnikov de Haas oscillations and the quantum Hall effect observed in epitaxial graphene. Experimental data show that the scattering time of the conduction electron is magnetic field dependent and of the order of the cyclotron orbit period, \textit{i.e.} can be much smaller than the zero field scattering time. Our scenario involves the extraordinary graphene $n=0$ Landau level of the uncharged layers that produces a high density of states at the Fermi level. We find that the coupling between this $n=0$ Landau level and the conducting states of t…
The quantum Hall effect (QHE) with quantized Hall resistance of h/νe2 starts the research on topological quantum states and lays the foundation of topology in physics. Afterwards, Haldane proposed the QHE without Landau levels, showing nonzero Chern number |C|=1, which has been experimentally observed at relatively low temperatures. For emerging physics and low-power-consumption electronics, the key issues are how to increase the working temperature and realize high Chern numbers (C>1). Here, we report the experimental discovery of high-Chern-number QHE (C=2) without Landau levels and C=1 Cher…
Landau level broadening mechanisms in electrically neutral and quasineutral graphene were investigated through micro-magneto-Raman experiments in three different samples, namely, a natural single-layer graphene flake and a back-gated single-layer device, both deposited over Si/SiO2 substrates, and a multilayer epitaxial graphene employed as a reference sample. Interband Landau level transition widths were estimated through a quantitative analysis of the magnetophonon resonances associated with optically active Landau level transitions crossing the energy of the E_2g Raman-active phonon. Contra…
In this paper, we study transport properties of non-equilibrium systems under the application of light in many-terminal measurements, using the Floquet picture. We propose and demonstrate that the quantum transport properties can be controlled in materials such as graphene and topological insulators, via the application of light. Remarkably, under the application of off-resonant light, topological transport properties can be induced; these systems exhibits quantum Hall effects in the absence of a magnetic field with a near quantization of the Hall conductance, realizing so-called quantum Hall …
We compare ground state energies by variational Monte Carlo of the spin unpolarized Halperin 331 and the spin polarized Moore-Read (MR) Pfaffian fractional quantum Hall states at half-filling of the lowest Landau level (LLL) and the second Landau level (SLL) as a function of small deviations around the Coulomb point via the finite thickness effect and direct alterations to the the first two Haldane pseudopotentials. In the comparison we find that in the LLL, either the 331 state or the MR Pfaffian may be lower in energy depending on the deviations. In the SLL, however, the MR Pfaffian is consi…
Zero-modes, their topological degeneracy and relation to index theorems have attracted attention in the study of single- and bilayer graphene. For negligible scalar potentials, index theorems explain why the degeneracy of the zero-energy Landau level of a Dirac hamiltonian is not lifted by gauge field disorder, for example due to ripples, whereas other Landau levels become broadened by the inhomogenous effective magnetic field. That also the bilayer hamiltonian supports such protected bulk zero-modes was proved formally by Katsnelson and Prokhorova to hold on a compact manifold by using the At…
We show that the low-energy electronic structure of arbitrarily stacked graphene multilayers with nearest-neighbor interlayer tunneling consists of chiral pseudospin doublets. Although the number of doublets in an $N$-layer system depends on the stacking sequence, the pseudospin chirality sum is always $N$. $N$-layer stacks have $N$ distinct Landau levels at E=0 for each spin and valley, and quantized Hall conductivity $σ_{xy} = \pm(4 e^2/h)(N/2+n)$ where $n$ is a non-negative integer.
Graphene layers are known to stack in two stable configurations, namely ABA or ABC stacking, with drastically distinct electronic properties. Unlike the ABA stacking, little has been done to experimentally investigate the electronic properties of ABC graphene multilayers. Here, we report the first magneto optical study of a large ABC domain in a graphene multilayers flake, with ABC sequences exceeding 17 graphene sheets. The ABC-stacked multilayers can be fingerprinted with a characteristic electronic Raman scattering response, which persists even at room temperatures. Tracing the magnetic fie…
We investigate the topological insulating states of the $p$-band systems in optical lattices induced by the onsite orbital angular momentum polarization, which exhibit gapless edge modes in the absence of Landau levels. This effect arises from the energy level splitting between the onsite $p_x+ip_y$ and $p_x-ip_y$ orbitals by rotating each optical lattice site around its own center. At large rotation angular velocities, this model naturally reduces to two copies of Haldane's quantum Hall model without Landau levels. The distribution of Berry curvature in the momentum space and the quantized Ch…
We report the synthesis of AB-stacked multilayer graphene via ambient pressure chemical vapor deposition on Cu foils, and demonstrate a method to construct suspended multilayer graphene devices. In four-terminal geometry, such devices were characterized by hot carrier transport at temperatures down to 240 mK and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The differential conductance (dI/dV) shows a characteristic dip at longitudinal voltage bias V=0 at low temperatures, indicating the presence of hot electron effect due to a weak electron-phonon coupling. Under magnetic fields, the magnitude of the dI/dV …
We study an interacting two-component hard-core bosons on square lattice for which, in the presence of staggered magnetic flux, the ground state is a bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) state. Using a coupled-wire bosonization approach, we analytically show this model exhibits a BIQH state at total charge half filling associated with a symmetry-protected topological phase under $U(1)$ charge conservation. These theoretical expectations are verified, using the infinite density matrix renormalization group method, by providing numerical evidences for: (i) a quantized Hall conductance $σ_{xy}=\pm…
We formulate a field theory for a class of spin-singlet quantum Hall states (the Haldane-Rezayi state and its variants) which have been proposed for the quantized Hall plateaus observed at the second lowest Landau level. A new essential ingredient is a class of super Chern-Simons field. We show that the known properties of the states are consistently described by it. We also give a 2+1 dimensional hierarchical construction. Implications of the proposal are discussed and a new physical picture of composite particles at the second lowest Landau level emerges.
A theory for a Fermi-liquid-like state in a system of charged bosons at filling factor one is developed, working in the lowest Landau level. The approach is based on a representation of the problem as fermions with a system of constraints, introduced by Pasquier and Haldane (unpublished). This makes the system a gauge theory with gauge algebra W_infty. The low-energy theory is analyzed based on Hartree-Fock and a corresponding conserving approximation. This is shown to be equivalent to introducing a gauge field, which at long wavelengths gives an infinite-coupling U(1) gauge theory, without a …
The energy-dependence of the electronic scattering time is probed by Landau level spectroscopy in quasi neutral multilayer epitaxial graphene. From the Landau levels broadening we find that the scattering rate increases linearly with energy. This implies a surprising property of the Landau level spectrum in graphene - the number of the resolved Landau levels remains constant with the applied magnetic field. Insights are given about possible scattering mechanism and carrier mobilities in the graphene system investigated.
Particle-hole symmetry breaking in the fractional quantum Hall effect has recently been studied both theoretically and experimentally with most works focusing on non-Abelian states in the second electronic Landau level. In this work, we theoretically investigate particle-hole symmetry breaking of incompressible fractional quantum Hall states in the lowest Landau level under the influence of the realistic effect of a finite magnetic field strength. A finite magnetic field induces Landau level and sub-band mixing which are known to break particle-hole symmetry at the level of the Hamiltonian. We…
We study the orbital effect of a strong magnetic field parallel to the layers on the energy spectrum of the Bernal-stacked graphene bilayer and multilayers, including graphite. We consider the minimal model with the electron tunneling between the nearest sites in the plane and out of the plane. Using the semiclassical analytical approximation and exact numerical diagonalization, we find that the energy spectrum consists of two domains. In the low- and high-energy domains, the semiclassical electron orbits are closed and open, so the spectra are discrete and continuous, correspondingly. The dis…
The electronic Raman scattering of bulk graphite at zero magnetic field reveals a structureless signal characteristic of a metal. For T<~100 K and B > 2 T, several peaks at energies scaling linearly with magnetic field were observed and ascribed to transitions from the lowest energy Landau level(s) (LL) to excited states belonging to the same ladder. The LLs are equally (unequally) spaced for high (low) quantum numbers, being surprisingly consistent with the LL sequence from massive Dirac Fermions (m* = 0.033(2) m_e) with Berry's phase 2πfound in graphene bilayers. These results provide spectr…
Layer stacking and crystal lattice symmetry play important roles in the band structure and the Landau levels of multilayer graphene. ABA-stacked trilayer graphene possesses mirror-symmetry-protected monolayer-like and bilayer-like band structures. Broken mirror symmetry by a perpendicular electric field therefore induces hybridization between these bands and various quantum Hall phases emerge. We experimentally explore the evolution of Landau levels in ABA-stacked trilayer graphene under electric field. We observe a variety of valley and orbital dependent Landau level evolutions. These evoluti…
We study by exact diagonalization, in the lowest Landau level approximation, the Coulomb interaction problem of N = 4 and N = 6 quantum dot in the limit of zero Zeeman coupling. We find that meron excitations constitute the lowest lying states of the quantum dots. This is based on a mapping between the excitations of the dot and states of the Haldane-Shastry spin chain.
We propose Landau levels as a probe for the topological character of electronic bands in two-dimensional moiré superlattices. We consider two configurations of twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) that have very similar band structures, but show different valley Chern numbers of the flat bands. These differences between the AB-AB and AB-BA configurations of TDBG clearly manifest as different Landau level sequences in the Hofstadter butterfly spectra calculated using the tight-binding model. The Landau level sequences are explained from the point of view of the distribution of orbital magneti…
Magneto Raman scattering study of the E$_{2g}$ optical phonons in multi-layer epitaxial graphene grown on a carbon face of SiC are presented. At 4.2K in magnetic field up to 33 T, we observe a series of well pronounced avoided crossings each time the optically active inter Landau level transition is tuned in resonance with the E$_{2g}$ phonon excitation (at 196 meV). The width of the phonon Raman scattering response also shows pronounced variations and is enhanced in conditions of resonance. The experimental results are well reproduced by a model that gives directly the strength of the electro…
How atoms acquire three-dimensional bulk character is one of the fundamental questions in materials science. Before addressing this question, how atomic layers become a bulk crystal might give a hint to the answer. While atomically thin films have been studied in a limited range of materials, a recent discovery showing how to mechanically exfoliate bulk crystals has opened up the field to study the atomic layers of various materials. Here, we show systematic variation in the band structure of high mobility graphene with one to seven layers by measuring the quantum oscillation of magnetoresista…
We consider a family of twisted graphene multilayers consisting of $n$-untwisted chirally stacked layers, e.g., AB, ABC, etc, with a single twist on top of $m$-untwisted {chirally stacked} layers. Upon neglecting both trigonal warping terms for the untwisted layers and the same sublattice hopping between all layers, the resulting models generalize several remarkable features of the chiral model of twisted bilayer graphene (CTBG). In particular, they exhibit a set of magic angles which are identical to those of CTBG at which a pair of bands (i) are perfectly flat, (ii) have Chern numbers in the…
We theoretically study the effect of the motion and the merging of Dirac cone on the interlayer magnetoresistance in multilayer graphene like systems. This merging, which could be induced by a uniaxial strain, gives rise in monolayer Dirac electron system to a topological transition from a semi-metallic phase to an insulating phase where Dirac points disappear. Based on a universal Hamiltonian proposed to describe the motion and the merging of Dirac points in two dimensional Dirac electron crystals, we calculate the interlayer conductivity of a stack of deformed graphene like layers using Kubo…
Circular polarization resolved magneto-infrared studies of multilayer epitaxial graphene (MEG) are performed using tunable quantum cascade lasers in high magnetic fields up to 17.5 T. Landau level (LL) transitions in the monolayer and bilayer graphene inclusions of MEG are resolved, and considerable electron-hole asymmetry is observed in the extracted electronic band structure. For monolayer graphene, a four-fold splitting of the $n=0$ to $n=1$ LL transition is evidenced and attributed to the lifting of the valley and spin degeneracy of the zeroth LL and the broken electron-hole symmetry. The …
Optical Faraday rotation is one of the most direct and practically important manifestations of magnetically broken time-reversal symmetry. The rotation angle is proportional to the distance traveled by the light, and up to now sizeable effects were observed only in macroscopically thick samples and in two-dimensional electron gases with effective thicknesses of several nanometers. Here we demonstrate that a single atomic layer of carbon - graphene - turns the polarization by several degrees in modest magnetic fields. The rotation is found to be strongly enhanced by resonances originating from …
We classify all possible 36 gap-opening instabilities in graphene-like structures in two dimensions, i.e., masses of Dirac Hamiltonian when the spin, valley, and superconducting channels are included. These 36 order parameters break up into 56 possible quintuplets of masses that add in quadrature, and hence do not compete and thus can coexist. There is additionally a 6th competing mass, the one added by Haldane to obtain the quantum Hall effect in graphene without magnetic fields, that breaks time-reversal symmetry and competes with all other masses in any of the quintuplets. Topological defec…
Herein, we introduce the framework of gauge invariant variables to describe fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, and prove that the wavefunction can always be represented by a unique holomorphic multi-variable complex function. As a special case, within the lowest Landau level, this function reduces to the well-known holomorphic coordinate representation of wavefunctions in the symmetric gauge. Using this framework, we derive an analytic guiding center Schrödinger's equation governing FQH states; it has a novel structure. We show how the electronic interaction is parametrized by generalized p…
Precise infrared magnetotransmission experiments have been performed in magnetic fields up to 32 T on a series of multilayer epitaxial graphene samples. We observe changes in the spectral features and broadening of the main cyclotron transition when the incoming photon energy is in resonance with the lowest Landau level separation and the energy of a K point optical phonon. We have developed a theory that explains and quantitatively reproduces the frequency and magnetic field dependence of the phenomenon as the absorption of a photon together with the simultaneous creation of an intervalley, i…
Electronic correlations stemming from nearly flat bands in van der Waals materials have demonstrated to be a powerful playground to engineer artificial quantum matter, including superconductors, correlated insulators and topological matter. This phenomenology has been experimentally observed in a variety of twisted van der Waals materials, such as graphene and dichalcogenide multilayers. Here we show that spontaneously buckled graphene can yield a correlated state, emerging from an elastic pseudo Landau level. Our results build on top of recent experimental findings reporting that, when placed…
The intrinsic resistance peak (ridge) structures were recently found to appear in the carrier density dependence plot of the resistance of the AB-stacked multilayer graphene with even numbers of layers. The ridges are due to topological changes in the Fermi surface. Here, these structures were studied in AB-stacked multilayer graphene with odd numbers of layers (5 and 7 layers) by performing experiments using encapsulated high-quality graphene samples equipped with top and bottom gate electrodes. The intrinsic resistance peaks that appeared on maps plotted with respect to the carrier density and…
A new class of multilayered functional materials has recently emerged in which the component atomic layers are held together by weak van der Waals forces that preserve the structural integrity and physical properties of each layer. An exemplar of such a structure is a transistor device in which relativistic Dirac Fermions can resonantly tunnel through a boron nitride barrier, a few atomic layers thick, sandwiched between two graphene electrodes. An applied magnetic field quantises graphene's gapless conduction and valence band states into discrete Landau levels, allowing us to resolve individu…
The electronic band structure of ABC-stacked multilayer graphene is studied within an effective mass approximation. The electron and hole bands touching at zero energy support chiral quasiparticles characterized by Berry's phase N pi for N-layers, generalizing the low-energy band structure of monolayer and bilayer graphene. We investigate the trigonal-warping deformation of the energy bands and show that the Lifshitz transition, in which the Fermi circle breaks up into separate parts at low energy, reflects Berry's phase N pi. It is particularly prominent in trilayers, N=3, with the Fermi circ…
The chiral two-dimensional electron gas in Landau levels $\left\vert N\right\vert >0$ of a Bernal-stacked graphene bilayer has a valley-pseudospin Ising quantum Hall ferromagnetic behavior at odd filling factors $ν_{N}=1,3$ of these fourfold degenerate states. At zero interlayer electrical bias, the ground state at these fillings is spin polarized and electrons occupy one valley or the other while a finite electrical bias produces a series of valley pseudospin-flip transitions. In this work, we extend the Ising behavior to chirally-stacked multilayer graphene and discuss the hysteretic behavio…
