We have studied the spin orbit torque (SOT) in Pt/Co/Ir multilayers with 3 repeats of the unit structure. As the system exhibits oscillatory interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) with varying Ir layer thickness, we compare the SOT of films when the Co layers are coupled ferromagnetically and antiferromagnetically. SOT is evaluated using current induced shift of the anomalous Hall resistance hysteresis loops. A relatively thick Pt layer, serving as a seed layer to the multilayer, is used to generate spin current via the spin Hall effect. In the absence of antiferromagnetic coupling, the SOT is constant against the applied current density and the corresponding spin torque efficiency (i.e. the effective spin Hall angle) is $\sim$0.09, in agreement with previous reports. In contrast, for films with antiferromagnetic coupling, the SOT increases with the applied current density and eventually saturates. The SOT at saturation is a factor of $\sim$15 larger than that without the antiferromagnetic coupling. The spin torque efficiency is $\sim$5 times larger if we assume the net total magnetization is reduced by a factor of 3 due to the antiferromagnetic coupling. Model calculations based on the Landau Lifshitz Gilbert equation show that the presence of antiferromagnetic coupling can increase the SOT but the degree of enhancement is limited, in this case, to a factor of 1.2-1.4. We thus consider there are other sources of SOT, possibly at the interfaces, which may account for the highly efficient SOT in the uncompensated synthetic anti-ferromagnet (SAF) multilayers.
This paper presents a review of the phenomenon of interlayer exchange coupling in magnetic multilayers. The emphasis is put on a pedagogical presentation of the mechanism of the phenomenon, which has been successfully explained in terms of a spin-dependent quantum confinement effect. The theoretical predictions are discussed in connection with corresponding experimental investigations.
We experimentally study the interlayer interaction in a magnetic multilayer system ferromagnet/insulator/ferromagnet with different spacer thickness. We demonstrate that the sign and the magnitude of the interaction can be deduced from the FMR peak shape rather than from the FMR peak shift. The proposed technique allows studying the interlayer interaction using a single sample (without a reference sample for comparison).
We present a theoretical description of the interlayer magnetoresistance in the layered Dirac fermion system with the application to the organic conductor α-(BEDT-TTF)_2I_3 under pressure. Assuming a non-vertical interlayer tunneling and including higher Landau level effects we calculate the interlayer conductivity using the Kubo formula. We propose a physical picture of the experimentally observed crossover from the negative interlayer magnetoresistance, where the Dirac fermion zero-energy Landau level plays a central role, to the positive interlayer magnetoresistance that is the consequence o…
With the motivation of improving the performance and reliability of aggressively scaled nano-patterned graphene field-effect transistors, we present the first systematic experimental study on charge and current distribution in multilayer graphene field-effect transistors. We find a very particular thickness dependence for Ion, Ioff, and the Ion/Ioff ratio, and propose a resistor network model including screening and interlayer coupling to explain the experimental findings. In particular, our model does not invoke modification of the linear energy-band structure of graphene for the multilayer c…
We report the first ab-initio study of the interlayer exchange coupling in Fe/c-FeSi/Fe sandwiches and Fe/c-FeSi multilayers. We perform several structural studies, which show the stability of the CsCl arrangement seen experimentally for the spacer. We find antiferromagnetic coupling between the Fe slabs for spacer thicknesses smaller than about 15 $Å$, for both sandwiches and multilayers structures. We also study the effect of pinholes, interface roughness or structural misconfigurations of the spacer on the sign and magnitude of the exchange constant J. We finally show that the asymptotic be…
Most experimental studies to date of multilayer epitaxial graphene on C-face SiC have indicated that the electronic states of different layers are decoupled as a consequence of rotational stacking. We have measured the third order nonlinear tensor in epitaxial graphene as a novel approach to probe interlayer electronic coupling, by studying THz emission from coherently controlled photocurrents as a function of the optical pump and THz beam polarizations. We find that the polarization dependence of the coherently controlled THz emission expected from perfectly uncoupled layers, i.e. a single gr…
To address thermal stability issues for spintronic devices with a reduced size, we investigate spin-orbit torque in Co/Pt multilayers with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Note that the spin-orbit torque arises from the global imbalance of the spin currents from the top and bottom interfaces for each Co layer. By inserting Ta or Cu layers to strengthen the top-down asymmetry, the spin-orbit torque efficiency can be greatly modified without compromised perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Above all, the efficiency builds up as the number of layers increases, realizing robust thermal stab…
Current induced spin-orbit torques have been studied in ferromagnetic nanowires made of 20 nm thick Co/Pd multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Using Hall voltage and lock-in measurements, it is found that upon injection of an electric current both in-plane (Slonczewski-like) and perpendicular (field-like) torques build up in the nanowire. The torque efficiencies are found to be as large as 1.17 kOe and 5 kOe at 108 A/cm2 for the in-plane and perpendicular components, respectively, which is surprisingly comparable to previous studies in ultrathin (~ 1 nm) magnetic bilayers. We sh…
Interlayer interactions perturb the electronic structure of two-dimensional materials and lead to new physical phenomena, such as van Hove singularities and Hofstadter's butterfly pattern. Silicene, the recently discovered two-dimensional form of silicon, is quite unique, in that silicon atoms adopt competing <i>sp</i>2 and <i>sp</i>3 hybridization states leading to a low-buckled structure promising relatively strong interlayer interaction. In multilayer silicene, the stacking order provides an important yet rarely explored degree of freedom for tuning its electronic stru…
We study the combined effect of temperature and disorder in the spacer on the interlayer exchange coupling. The temperature dependence is treated on ab initio level. We employ the spin-polarized surface Green function technique within the tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method and the Lloyd formulation of the IEC. The integrals involving the Fermi-Dirac distribution are calculated using an efficient method based on representation of integrands by a sum of complex exponentials. Application is made to Co/Cu_{100-x}M_x/Co(001) trilayers (M=Zn, Au, and Ni) with varying thicknesses of the s…
We investigate the effect of the interlayer spin-flip tunneling for the interlayer magnetoresistance under magnetic fields in alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3, which is a multilayer massless Dirac fermion system under pressure. The mean field of the spin-flip correlation associated with the interlayer Coulomb interaction enables the interlayer spin-flip tunneling. Assuming the non-vertical interlayer spin-flip tunneling, we calculate the interlayer magnetoresistance using the Kubo formula. The crossover magnetic field, at which the interlayer magnetoresistance changes from positive to negative is shifted b…
Extensive efforts have been devoted to the study of spin-orbit torque in ferromagnetic metal/heavy metal bilayers and exploitation of it for magnetization switching using an in-plane current. As the spin-orbit torque is inversely proportional to the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer, sizable effect has only been realized in bilayers with an ultrathin ferromagnetic layer. Here we demonstrate that, by stacking ultrathin Pt and FeMn alternately, both ferromagnetic properties and current induced spin-orbit torque can be achieved in FeMn/Pt multilayers without any constraint on its total thickne…
We investigate a novel type of interlayer exchange coupling based on driving a strong/weak/strong ferromagnetic tri-layer through the Curie point of the weakly ferromagnetic spacer, with the exchange coupling between the strongly ferromagnetic outer layers that can be switched, on and off, or varied continuously in magnitude by controlling the temperature of the material. We use Ni-Cu alloy of varied composition as the spacer material and model the effects of proximity-induced magnetism and the interlayer exchange coupling through the spacer from first principles, taking into account not only …
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images are obtained for the first time on few layer and twisted multilayer epitaxial graphene states synthesized on n+ 6H-SiC a-plane non-polar surface. The twisted graphene is determined to have a rotation angle of 5.4° between the top two layers, by comparing moiré patterns from stick and ball models of bilayer graphene to experimentally obtained images. Furthermore, the experimental moiré pattern shows dynamic behavior, continuously shuffling between two stable surface arrangements one bond length apart. The moiré pattern shifts by more than 1 nm, making …
Interlayer magnetoresistance (ILMR) effect is explored in a vertical stack of weakly coupled multilayer graphene as grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). This effect has been characterized as a function of temperature and tilt angle of the magnetic field with respect to the interlayer current. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental report on angle dependent ILMR effect in graphitic systems. Our data agrees qualitatively with the existing theories of ILMR in multilayer massless Dirac Fermion systems. However, a sharper change in ILMR has been observed as the tilt angle of the magn…
In van der Waals bonded or rotationally disordered multilayer stacks of two-dimensional (2D) materials, the electronic states remain tightly confined within individual 2D layers. As a result, electron-phonon interactions occur primarily within layers and interlayer electrical conductivities are low. In addition, strong covalent in-plane intralayer bonding combined with weak van der Waals interlayer bonding results in weak phonon-mediated thermal coupling between the layers. We demonstrate here, however, that Coulomb interactions between electrons in different layers of multilayer epitaxial gra…
Current-induced dynamics of twisted domain walls and skyrmions in ferromagnetic perpendicularly magnetized multilayers is studied through three-dimensional micromagnetic simulations and analytical modeling. It is shown that such systems generally exhibit a Walker breakdown-like phenomenon in the presence of current-induced damping-like spin-orbit torque. Above a critical current threshold, corresponding to typical velocities of the order tens of m/s, domain walls in some layers start to precess with frequencies in the gigahertz regime, which leads to oscillatory motion and a significant drop i…
We report a study of interlayer exchange interaction in multilayer CoPt/Co structures consisting of periodic CoPt multilayer film with an "easy axis" anisotropy and thick Co layer with an "easy plane" anisotropy separated by Pt spacer with variable thickness. The magnetooptical Kerr effect (MOKE) and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements show up the essentially non-collinear state of magnetic moments of the layers and strong exchange coupling between CoPt and Co subsystems. The estimation of effective anisotropy and exchange coupling in a simple model based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert …
The recent renaissance of black phosphorus (BP) as a two-dimensional 2D layered material has generated tremendous interest in its tunable electronic band gap and highly anisotropic transport properties that offer new opportunities for device applications. Many of these outstanding properties are attributed to its unique structural characters that still need elucidation. Here we show Raman measurements that reveal an ultralow-frequency collective compression mode (CCM), which is unprecedented among similar 2D layered materials. This novel CCM indicates an unusually strong interlayer coupling in…
We study the effect that the electron-electron interaction has on the properties of a multilayer electron system. We consider the case corresponding to filling factor unity in each layer. We find that as a function of the sample parameters the system has ferromagnetic, canted antiferromagnetic or paramagnetic interlayer spin correlations. These three ground states are QHE phases, because of the existence of a finite activation energy. In the ferromagnetic phase the gap is due to the intrawell exchange energy, whereas in the paramagnetic phase the gap appears due to the spatial modulation of th…
We study the effect of perpendicular electric fields on the band structures of ABA and ABC graphene multilayers, and find that the electronic screening effect is significantly different between them. In ABA multilayers, the field produces a band overlap and gives a linear screening, while in ABC multilayers, in contrast, it opens an energy gap in the surface-state band at low energy, leading to a strong screening effect essentially non-linear to the field amplitude. The energy gap of a large ABC stack sharply rises when the external field exceeds a certain critical value.
Despite the recent progress on two-dimensional multilayer materials (2DMM) with weak interlayer interactions, the investigation on 2DMM with strong interlayer interactions is far from its sufficiency. Here we report on first-principles calculations that clarify the structural evolution and optoelectronic properties of such a 2DMM, multilayer silicene. With our newly developed global optimization algorithm, we discover the existence of rich dynamically stable multilayer silicene phases, the stability of which is closely related to the extent of sp3 hybridization that can be evaluated by the ave…
Peeling, shearing, and sliding are important mechanical phenomena in van der Waals solids. However, theoretically they have been studied mostly using minimal periodic cells and in the context of accurate quantum simulations. Here, we investigate the peeling of large-scale multilayer graphene stacks with varying thicknesses, stackings, and peeling directions by using classical molecular dynamics simulations with a registry-dependent interlayer potential. Simulations show that, while at large scale the peeling proceeds smoothly, at small scale the registry shifts and sliding patterns of the laye…
Spin-orbit torque (SOT) magnetization switching of ferromagnets with large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy has a great potential for the next-generation non-volatile magnetoresistive random-access memory (MRAM). It requires a high-performance pure spin current source with a large spin Hall angle and high electrical conductivity, which can be fabricated by a mass production technique. In this work, we demonstrate ultrahigh efficient and robust SOT magnetization switching in all-sputtered BiSb topological insulator - perpendicularly magnetized Co/Pt multilayers. Despite fabricated by the indus…
We present a calculation of current-induced torques in metallic magnetic multilayers derived from the spin-dependent transmission and reflection properties of the magnetic layers. A scattering formalism is employed to calculate the torques in a magnetic-nonmagnetic-magnetic trilayer, for currents perpendicular to the layers, in both the ballistic and diffusive regimes.
This article reviews progress in the theoretical modelling of the electronic structure of rotationally faulted multilayer graphenes. In these systems the crystallographic axes of neighboring layers are misaligned so that the layer stacking does not occur in the Bernal structure observed in three dimensional graphite and frequently found in exfoliated bilayer graphene. Notably, rotationally faulted graphenes are commonly found in other forms of multilayer graphene including epitaxial graphenes thermally grown on ${\rm SiC \, (000 \bar 1)}$, graphenes grown by chemical vapor deposition, folded m…
Spin currents can modify the magnetic state of ferromagnetic ultrathin films through spin-orbit torque. They may be generated by means of spin-orbit interaction by either bulk or interfacial phenomena. Electrical transport measurements reveal a six-fold increase of the spin-orbit torque accompanied by a drastic reduction of the spin Hall magnetoresistance upon the introduction of a Cu interlayer in a Pt/Cu/Co/Pt structure with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We analyze the dependence of the spin Hall magnetoresistance with the thickness of the interlayer in the frame of a drift diffusion mo…
We present theoretical study of ferromagnetic resonance in a system of two coupled magnetic layers. We show that an interaction between the layers leads to the occurrence of the so-called Fano resonance. The Fano resonance changes the shape of the ferromagnetic resonance peak. It introduces a peak asymmetry. The asymmetry type is defined by the sign of the interaction between the magnetic layers. Therefore, studying the shape of the ferromagnetic resonance peaks one can define the type of the interlayer coupling (ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic). We show that using numerical simulations one…
We study molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) structures generated by folding single- and bilayer MoS2 flakes. We find that this modified layer stacking leads to a decrease in the interlayer coupling and an enhancement of the photoluminescence emission yield. We additionally find that folded single-layer MoS2 structures show a contribution to photoluminescence spectra of both neutral and charged excitons, which is a characteristic feature of single-layer MoS2 that has not been observed in multilayer MoS2. The results presented here open the door to fabrication of multilayered MoS2 samples with high opt…
Photoluminescence (PL) from excitons serves as a powerful tool to characterize the optoelectronic property and band structure of semiconductors, especially for atomically thin 2D transition metal chalcogenide (TMD) materials. However, PL quenches quickly when the thickness of TMD material increases from monolayer to few-layers, due to the change from direct to indirect band transition. Here we show that PL can be recovered by engineering multilayer heterostructures, with the band transition reserved to be direct type. We report emission from layer engineered interlayer excitons from these mult…
We theoretically study the effect of the motion and the merging of Dirac cone on the interlayer magnetoresistance in multilayer graphene like systems. This merging, which could be induced by a uniaxial strain, gives rise in monolayer Dirac electron system to a topological transition from a semi-metallic phase to an insulating phase where Dirac points disappear. Based on a universal Hamiltonian proposed to describe the motion and the merging of Dirac points in two dimensional Dirac electron crystals, we calculate the interlayer conductivity of a stack of deformed graphene like layers using Kubo…
We review a unified approach for computing: (i) spin-transfer torque in magnetic trilayers like spin-valves and magnetic tunnel junction, where injected charge current flows perpendicularly to interfaces; and (ii) spin-orbit torque in magnetic bilayers of the type ferromagnet/spin-orbit-coupled-material, where injected charge current flows parallel to the interface. Our approach requires to construct the torque operator for a given Hamiltonian of the device and the steady-state nonequilibrium density matrix, where the latter is expressed in terms of the nonequilibrium Green's functions and spl…
The influence of dynamic interlayer interactions on the spin torque driven and damped excitations are illustrated for a three layer macrospin model system that corresponds to a standard spin-torque oscillator. The free layer and a synthetic antiferromagnetic (SyF) pinned layer of the spin-torque oscillator are in-plane magnetized. In order to understand experimental results, numerical simulations have been performed considering three types of interlayer interactions: exchange interaction between the two magnetic layers of the SyF, mutual spin torque between the top layer of the SyF and the fre…
The FMR linewidth and its anisotropy in F$_1$/f/F$_2$/AF multilayers, where spacer f has a low Curie point compared to the strongly ferromagnetic F$_1$ and F$_2$, is investigated. The role of the interlayer exchange coupling in magnetization relaxation is determined experimentally by varying the thickness of the spacer. It is shown that stronger interlayer coupling via thinner spacers enhances the microwave energy exchange between the outer ferromagnetic layers, with the magnetization of F$_2$ exchange-dragged by the resonance precession in F$_1$. A weaker mirror effect is also observed: the m…
We discuss the chiral decomposition of non-symmetric stacking structures. It is shown that the low-energy electronic structure of Bernal stacked graphene multilayer deposited on h-BN consists of chiral pseudospin doublets. N-layer graphene stocks on h-BN layer have N/2 effective bilayer graphene systems and one effective h-BN layer if N is even or (N-1)/2 effective graphene bilayers plus one graphene monolayer modified by h-BN layer if N is odd. We present the decomposition procedure and we derive the recurrence relations for the effective parameters characterizing the chiral subsystems. The e…
We report on an {\em ab-initio} study of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) and current-induced-torques (CITs) in Cr/Au multilayers that is based on non-equilibrium Green's functions and spin density functional theory. We find substantial GMR due primarily to a spin-dependent resonance centered at the Cr/Au interface and predict that the CITs are strong enough to switch the antiferromagnetic order parameter at current-densities $\sim 100$ times smaller than typical ferromagnetic metal circuit switching densities.
We study interlayer transport of multilayer graphenes in magnetic field with various stacking structures (AB, ABC, and AA types) by calculating the Hall and longitudinal conductivities as functions of Fermi energy. Their behavior depends strongly on the stacking structures and selection of the layers. The Hall conductivity between different layers is no longer quantized. Moreover, for AB stacking, the interlayer conductivity vanishes around zero energy with increasing layer separation, and shows negative values in particular cases. The fact that longitudinal interlayer conductivity suppressed …
Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanosheets exhibit remarkable electronic and optical properties. The 2D features, sizable bandgaps, and recent advances in the synthesis, characterization, and device fabrication of the representative MoS$_2$, WS$_2$, WSe$_2$, and MoSe$_2$ TMDs make TMDs very attractive in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. Similar to graphite and graphene, the atoms within each layer in 2D TMDs are joined together by covalent bonds, while van der Waals interactions keep the layers together. This makes the physical and chemical properties of 2D TMDs …
The critical current of the spin transfer torque-driven magnetization dynamics was studied by taking into account both spin pumping and the finite penetration depth of the transverse spin current. We successfully reproduced the recent experimental results obtained by Chen et al. [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 74}, 144408 (2006)] and found that the critical current remains finite even in the zero-thickness limit of the free layer. We showed that the remaining value of the critical current is determined mainly by spin pumping.
We investigate the spin-transfer torque in a magnetic multilayer structure by means of a spin-diffusion model. The torque in the considered system, consisting of two magnetic layers separated by a conducting layer, is caused by a perpendicular-to-plane current. We compute the strength of the field-like and the damping-like torque for different material parameters and geometries. Our studies suggest that the field-like torque highly depends on the exchange coupling strength of the itinerant electrons with the magnetization both in the pinned and the free layer. While a low coupling leads to ver…
We develop a simple theoretical framework for transport in magnetic multilayers, based on Landauer-Buttiker scattering formalism and Random Matrix Theory. A simple transformation allows one to go from the scattering point of view to theories expressed in terms of local currents and electrochemical potential. In particular, our theory can be mapped onto the well established classical Valet Fert theory for collinear systems. For non collinear systems, in the absence of spin-flip scattering, our theory can be mapped onto the generalized circuit theory. We apply our theory to the angular dependanc…
We report a comprehensive study of the maximization of the spin Hall ratio (θSH) in Pt thin films by the insertion of sub-monolayer layers of Ti to decrease carrier lifetime while minimizing the concurrent reduction in the spin Hall conductivity. We establish that the intrinsic spin Hall conductivity of Pt, while robust against the strain and the moderate interruption of crystal order caused by these insertions, begins to decrease rapidly at high resistivity level because of the shortening carrier lifetime. The unavoidable trade-off between the intrinsic spin Hall conductivity and carrier life…
In this work, we study structural and vibrational properties of multilayer graphene using density-functional theory (DFT) with van der Waals (vdW) functionals. Initially, we analyze how different vdW functionals compare by evaluating the lattice parameters, elastic constants and vibrational frequencies of low energy optical modes of graphite. Our results indicate that the vdW-DF1-optB88 functional has the best overall performance on the description of vibrational properties. Next, we use this functional to study the influence of the vdW interactions on the structural and vibrational properties…
We investigate the spin-ordered states in multilayer massless Dirac fermion systems under magnetic fields, in which the intralayer interaction is ferromagnetic owing to the exchange interaction, while the interlayer interaction is antiferromagnetic arising from the interlayer hopping and the on-site Coulomb repulsion. The possible spin-ordered states are examined within the mean field theory, and we apply it to alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3, which is a multilayer massless Dirac fermion system under pressure. In the weak interlayer coupling regime the system exhibits a ferromagnetically spin-ordered stat…
In the context of graphene-based composite applications, a complete understanding of charge conduction in multilayer reduced graphene oxides (rGO) is highly desirable. However, these rGO compounds are characterized by multiple and different sources of disorder depending on the chemical method used for their synthesis. Most importantly the precise role of interlayer interaction in promoting or jeopardizing electronic flow remains unclear. Here, thanks to the development of a multiscale computational approach combining first-principles calculations with large scale transport simulations, the tra…
We consider a quasi one-dimensional configuration consisting of two small pieces of ferromagnetic material separated by a metallic one and contacted by two metallic leads. A spin-polarized current is injected from one lead. Our goal is to investigate the correlation induced between the magnetizations of the two ferromagnets by spin-transfer torque. This torque results from the interaction between the magnetizations and the spin polarization of the current. We discuss the dynamics of a single ferromagnet, the extension to the case of two ferromagnets, and give some estimates for the parameters …
We study inserting Co layer thickness-dependent spin transport and spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in the Pt/Co/Py trilayers by spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance. The interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy energy density ($K_s = 2.7~erg/cm^2$), which is dominated by interfacial spin-orbit coupling (ISOC) in the Pt/Co interface, total effective spin-mixing conductance ($G_{eff,tot} = 0.42 {\times} 10^{15}~Ω^{-1} m^{-2}$) and two-magnon scattering ($β_{TMS} = 0.46~nm^2$) are first characterized, and the damping-like torque ($ξ_{DL}$ = 0.103) and field-like torque ($ξ_{FL}$ = -0.017) efficienc…
