By combining molecular dynamics simulations and topological analyses with scaling arguments, we obtain analytic expressions that quantitatively predict the entanglement length $N_e$, the plateau modulus $G$, and the tube diameter $a$ in melts that span the entire range of chain stiffnesses for which systems remain isotropic. Our expressions resolve conflicts between previous scaling predictions for the loosely entangled [Lin-Noolandi: $G\ell_K^3/k_\textrm{B}T \sim (\ell_K/p)^3$], semiflexible [Edwards/de Gennes: $G\ell_K^3/k_\textrm{B}T \sim (\ell_K/p)^2$], and tightly-entangled [Morse: $G\ell_K^3/k_\textrm{B}T \sim (\ell_K/p)^{1+ε}$] regimes, where $\ell_K$ and $p$ are respectively the Kuhn and packing lengths. We also find that maximal entanglement (minimal $N_e$) coincides with the onset of local nematic order.

Relations between static and dynamic viscoelastic responses in gels can be very elucidating and may provide useful tools to study the behavior of bio-materials such as protein hydrogels. An important example comes from the viscoelasticity of semisolid gel-like materials, which is characterized by two regimes: a low-frequency regime where the storage modulus $G^{\prime}(ω)$ displays a constant value $G_{\text{eq}}$, and a high-frequency power-law stiffening regime, where $G^{\prime}(ω) \sim ω^{n}$. Recently, by considering Monte Carlo simulations to study the formation of peptides networks, we …
We calculate the plateau moduli of several single-chain slip-link and slip-spring models for entangled polymers. In these models, the entanglement effects are phenomenologically modeled by introducing topological constraints such as slip-links and slip-springs. The average number of segments between two neighboring slip-links or slip-springs, $N_{0}$, is an input parameter in these models. To analyze experimental data, the characteristic number of segments in entangled polymers $N_{e}$ estimated from the plateau modulus is used instead. Both $N_{0}$ and $N_{e}$ characterize the topological con…
Conflicting experimental results have been reported for the plateau modulus in actin solutions: Analogies are often made with the viscoelastic behaviour of flexible polymers making use of the idea of entanglement as the source of the macroscopic storage modulus. We resolve apparent experimental and theoretical contradictions by pointing out the possibility of two distinct plateau regimes as a function of frequency in semidilute solutions of semiflexible polymers. We make the point that longitudinal and transverse hindrance can have very different effects at the macroscopic scale.
In this paper we study a system of entangled chains that bear reversible cross-links in a melt state. The cross-links are tethered uniformly on the backbone of each chain. A slip-link type model for the system is presented and solved for the relaxation modulus. The effects of entanglements and reversible cross-linkers are modelled as discrete form of constraints that influence the motion of the primitive path. In contrast to a non-associating entangled system the model calculations demonstrate that the elastic modulus has a much higher first plateau and a delayed terminal relaxation. These eff…
A cornerstone of modern polymer physics is the `Flory ideality hypothesis' which states that a chain in a polymer melt adopts `ideal' random-walk-like conformations. Here we revisit theoretically and numerically this pivotal assumption and demonstrate that there are noticeable deviations from ideality. The deviations come from the interplay of chain connectivity and the incompressibility of the melt, leading to an effective repulsion between chain segments of all sizes $s$. The amplitude of this repulsion increases with decreasing $s$ where chain segments become more and more swollen. We illus…
The reorientation dynamics of local tangent vectors of chains in isotropic amorphous melts containing semiflexible model polymers was studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The reorientation is strongly influenced both by the local chain stiffness and by the overall chain length. It takes place by two different subsequent processes: A short-time non-exponential decay and a long-time exponential reorientation arising from the relaxation of medium-size chain segments. Both processes depend on stiffness and chain length. The strong influence of the chain length on the chain dynamics is in mar…
We have investigated the viscosity and the plateau modulus of actin solutions with a magnetically driven rotating disc rheometer. For entangled solutions we observed a scaling of the plateau modulus versus concentration with a power of 7/5. The measured terminal relaxation time increases with a power 3/2 as a function of polymer length. We interpret the entanglement transition and the scaling of the plateau modulus in terms of the tube model for semiflexible polymers.
We report our studies of the linear and nonlinear rheology of aqueous solutions of the surfactant cetyl trimethylammonium tosylate (CTAT) with varying amounts of sodium chloride (NaCl). The CTAT concentration is fixed at 42mM and the salt concentration is varied between 0mM to 120mM. On increasing the salt (NaCl) concentration, we see three distinct regimes in the zero-shear viscosity and the high frequency plateau modulus data. In regime I, the zero-shear viscosity shows a weak increase with salt concentration due to enhanced micellar growth. The decrease in the zero-shear viscosities with sa…
We study the onset of rigidity near the glass transition (GT) in a short-chain polymer melt modelled by a bead-spring model, where all beads interact with Lennard-Jones potentials. The properties of the system are examined above and below the GT. In order to minimize high cooling-rate effects and computational times, equilibrium configurations are reached via isothermal compression. We monitor quantities such as the heat capacity C_P, the short-time diffusion constants D, the viscosity η, and the shear modulus; the time-dependent shear modulus G(t) is compared with the shear modulus μobtained …
The breakdown of the time-temperature superposition (TTS) near its glass transition temperature (Tg) in simple bead-spring polymer melts with and without the chain angle potential was numerically investigated. The stress relaxation modulus at different temperatures G(t,T) was calculated by the Green-Kubo relation. The TTS of G(t,T) of bead-spring polymer melts worked well at temperatures sufficiently higher than its Tg. However, when the system temperature is approaching the glass transition regime, the breakdown of TTS is observed. At temperatures near the Tg, the temperature dependence of th…
We report on quantitative comparisons between simulation results of a bead-spring model and mode-coupling theory calculations for the structural and conformational dynamics of a supercooled, unentangled polymer melt. We find semiquantitative agreement between simulation and theory, except for processes that occur on intermediate length scales between the compressibility plateau and the amorphous halo of the static structure factor. Our results suggest that the onset of slow relaxation in a glass-forming melt can be described in terms of monomer-caging supplemented by chain connectivity. Furthe…
We present an extensive set of simulation results for the stress relaxation in equilibrium and step-strained bead-spring polymer melts. The data allow us to explore the chain dynamics and the shear relaxation modulus, $G(t)$, into the plateau regime for chains with $Z=40$ entanglements and into the terminal relaxation regime for $Z=10$. Using the known (Rouse) mobility of unentangled chains and the melt entanglement length determined via the primitive path analysis of the microscopic topological state of our systems, we have performed parameter -free tests of several different tube models. We …

The Kremer-Grest (KG) model is a standard for studying generic polymer properties. Here we have equilibrated KG melts up to and beyond $200$ entanglements per chain for varying chain stiffness. We present methods for estimating the Kuhn length corrected for incompressibility effects, for estimating the entanglement length corrected for chain stiffness, for estimating bead frictions and Kuhn times taking into account entanglement effects. These are the key parameters for enabling quantitative, accurate, and parameter free comparisons between theory, experiment and simulations of KG polymer mode…
We present results of molecular dynamics simulations of very long model polymer chains analyzed by various experimentally relevant techniques. The segment motion of the chains is found to be in very good agreement with the repatation model. We also calculated the plateau-modulus G_N. The predicitions of the entanglement length N_e from G_N and from the mean square displacements of the chains segments disagree by a factor of about 2.2(2), indicating an error in the prefactor in the standard formula for G_N. We show that recent neutron spin echo measurements were carried out for chain lengths wh…
The COMOFLO dynamic Monte Carlo algorithm is extended to enable the simulation of steady-state extensional rheology of dense melts for the first time ever. This significant advancement provides the ability to accurately capture the extensional viscosity of entangled polymer melts from low deformation rates, throughout the strain hardening regime, and into the region of viscosity thinning To do so, the purely extensional flow field associated with a four roll mill experiment is implemented in three dimensions. Periodic boundary conditions exist in all directions to enable a uniform deformation …
We present a detailed study of the static and dynamic behavior of long semiflexible polymer chains in a melt. Starting from previously obtained fully equilibrated high molecular weight polymer melts [{\it Zhang et al.} ACS Macro Lett. 3, 198 (2014)] we investigate their static and dynamic scaling behavior as predicted by theory. We find that for semiflexible chains in a melt, results of the mean square internal distance, the probability distributions of the end-to-end distance, and the chain structure factor are well described by theoretical predictions for ideal chains. We examine the motion …
Viscoelastic and thermodynamic properties of transient gels comprised of telechelic polymers are theoretically studied. We extend classical theories of transient networks so that correlations among polymer chains through the network junctions are taken into account. This extension enables us to investigate how rheological quantities, such as viscosity and elastic modulus, are affected by the association equilibrium conditions, and how these quantities are related to the aggregation number of junctions. We present a theoretical model of transient networks with junctions comprised of variable nu…
We present large-scale molecular dynamics simulations for a coarse-grained model of polymer melts in equilibrium. From detailed Rouse mode analysis we show that the time-dependent relaxation of the autocorrelation function (ACF) of modes $p$ can be well described by the effective stretched exponential function due to the crossover from Rouse to reptation regime. The ACF is independent of chain sizes $N$ for $N/p<N_e$ ($N_e$ is the entanglement length), and there exists a minimum of the stretching exponent as $N/p \rightarrow N_e$. As $N/p$ increases, we verify the crossover scaling behavior of…
An extended Molecular-Dynamics study of the short-time "glassy" elasticity exhibited by a polymer melt of linear fully-flexible chains above the glass transition is presented. The focus is on the infinite-frequency shear modulus $G_\infty$ manifested in the picosecond time scale and the relaxed plateau $G_p$ reached at later times and terminated by the structural relaxation. The local stiffness of the interactions with the first neighbours of each monomer exhibits marked distribution with average value given by $G_\infty$. In particular, the neighbourhood of the end monomers of each chain are …
We investigate the viscoelastic properties of entangled networks of semiflexible polymers. At intermediate time scales the elastic response of these networks to shear deformation is described by the plateau modulus $G$. Different scaling laws with polymer concentration $c$ have been proposed based on the assumption that the deformation field is affine on all length scales. We develop a numerical approach that allows to calculate the modulus via free energy changes for both affine and non-affine deformations. The non-affine deformation field is obtained by a free energy minimization. Our findin…
We present a numerical study of the slip link model introduced by Likhtman for describing the dy- namics of dense polymer melts. After reviewing the technical aspects associated with the implemen- tation of the model, we extend previous work in several directions. The dependence of the relaxation modulus with the slip link density and the slip link stiffness is reported. Then the nonlinear rheolog- ical properties of the model, for a particular set of parameters, are explored. Finally, we introduce excluded volume interactions in a mean field such as manner in order to describe inhomogeneous s…
By means of computer simulations and solution of the equations of the Mode Coupling Theory (MCT), we investigate the role of the intramolecular barriers on several dynamic aspects of non-entangled polymers. The investigated dynamic range extends from the caging regime characteristic of glass-formers to the relaxation of the chain Rouse modes. We review our recent work on this question, provide new results and critically discuss the limitations of the theory. Solutions of the MCT for the structural relaxation reproduce qualitative trends of simulations for weak and moderate barriers. However a …
We have investigated the reduction of the glass transition temperature, $T_g$, for thin supported films of particularly small molecular weight ($M_W$ = 2 kg/mol) polystyrene, and found good agreement with earlier studies on larger molecules. By combining the eigenmodes of the films with mode coupling theory, we arrive at a simple and predictive model which is in quantitative agreement with the data. Its only fitting parameter is the shear modulus governing the relevant fluctuations. The weak dependence of the latter upon the molecular weight of the polymer is in accordance with the general obs…
We combine computer simulations and scaling arguments to develop a unified view of polymer entanglement based on the primitive path analysis (PPA) of the microscopic topological state. Our results agree with experimentally measured plateau moduli for three different polymer classes over a wide rangeof reduced polymer densities: (i) semi-dilute theta solutions of synthetic polymers, (ii) the corresponding dense melts above the glass transition or crystallization temperature, and (iii) solutions of semi-flexible (bio)polymers such as f-actin or suspensions of rodlike viruses. Together these syst…
We present atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of two Polyethylene systems where all entanglements are trapped: a perfect network, and a melt with grafted chain ends. We examine microscopically at what level topological constraints can be considered as a collective entanglement effect, as in tube model theories, or as certain pairwise uncrossability interactions, as in slip-link models. A pairwise parameter, which varies between these limiting cases, shows that, for the systems studied, the character of the entanglement environment is more pairwise than collective. We employ a novel metho…
In addition to the terminal flow (the region I) and the shear thinning (the region II), we discover two new flow regions in capillary flow at the wall stress higher than the plateau modulus of the polymer. The region III violates the empirical Cox-Merz rule with a significantly weaker shear thinning than the region II, and the region IV exhibits unexpected shear thickening. Moreover, the crossover shear rates between the regions II and III and between the regions III and IV scale with the number of entanglement per chain, Z=M_w/M_e, as Z^(-2.0) and Z^(-1.2) respectively. We attribute the weake…
Dynamical properties of a long polymer ring in a melt of unknotted and unconcatenated rings are calculated. We re-examine and generalize the well known model of a ring confined to a lattice of topological obstacles in the light of the recently developed Flory theory of unentangled rings which maps every ring on an annealed branched polymer and establishes that the backbone associated with each ring follows self-avoiding rather than Gaussian random walk statistics. We find the scaling of ring relaxation time and diffusion coefficient with ring length, as well as time dependence of stress relaxa…
The dynamic-mechanical response of flexible polymer networks is studied in the framework of tube model, in the limit of small affine deformations, using the approach based on Rayleighian dissipation function. The dynamic complex modulus G* is calculated from the analysis of a network strand relaxation to the new equilibrium conformation around the distorted primitive path. Chain equilibration is achieved via a sliding motion of polymer segments along the tube, eliminating the inhomogeneity of the polymer density caused by the deformation. The characteristic relaxation time of this motion <tau>…
Viscoelastic properties of polymer melts are particularly challenging to compute due to the intrinsic stress fluctuations in molecular dynamics (MD). We compared equilibrium and non-equilibrium MD approaches for extracting the storage (G') and loss moduli (G") over a wide frequency range from a bead-spring chain model, in both unentangled and entangled regimes. We found that, with properly chosen data processing and noise reduction procedures, different methods render quantitatively equivalent results. In equilibrium MD (EMD), applying the Green-Kubo relation with a multi-tau correlator method…
The scaling of the shear modulus near the gelation/vulcanization transition is explored heuristically and analytically. It is found that in a dense melt the effective chains of the infinite cluster have sizes that scale sub-linearly with their contour length. Consequently, each contributes k_B T to the rigidity, which leads to a shear modulus exponent dν. In contrast, in phantom elastic networks the scaling is linear in the contour length, yielding an exponent identical to that of the random resistor network conductivity, as predicted by de Gennes'. For non-dense systems, the exponent should c…
We present experimental evidence that the effective medium approximation (EMA), developed by D.C. Morse [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 63}, 031502, (2001)], provides the correct scaling law of the macroscopic plateau modulus $G^{0}\proptoρ^{4/3}L^{-1/3}_{p}$ (where $ρ$ is the contour length per unit volume and $L_{p}$ is the persistence length) of semi-flexible polymer solutions, in the highly entangled concentration regime. Competing theories, including a self-consistent binary collision approximation (BCA), have instead predicted $G^{0}\proptoρ^{7/5}L^{-1/5}_{p}$. We have tested both the EMA and BCA sca…
We present an analytic scheme to connect the fragility and viscoelasticity of metallic glasses to the effective ion-ion interaction in the metal. This is achieved by an approximation of the short-range repulsive part of the interaction, combined with nonaffine lattice dynamics to obtain analytical expressions for the shear modulus, viscosity, and fragility in terms of the ion-ion interaction. By fitting the theoretical model to experimental data, we are able to link the steepness of the interionic repulsion to the Thomas-Fermi screened Coulomb repulsion and to the Born-Mayer valence-electron o…
A long elastic cylinder, radius $a$ and shear-modulus $μ$, becomes unstable given sufficient surface tension $γ$. We show this instability can be simply understood by considering the energy, $E(λ)$, of such a cylinder subject to a homogenous longitudinal stretch $λ$. Although $E(λ)$ has a unique minimum, if surface tension is sufficient ($Γ\equivγ/(aμ)>\sqrt{32}$) it looses convexity in a finite region. We use a Maxwell construction to show that, if stretched into this region, the cylinder will phase separate into two segments with different stretches $λ_1$ and $λ_2$. Our model thus explains w…
Brownian dynamics simulations are used to study highly entangled solutions of semiflexible polymers. Bending fluctuations of semiflexible rods are signficantly affected by entanglement only above a concentration $c^{**}$, where $c^{**}\sim 10^{3}L^{-3}$ for chains of similar length $L$ and persistence length. For $c > c^{**}$, the tube radius $R_{e}$ approaches a dependence $R_{e} \propto c^{-3/5}$, and the linear viscoelastic response develops an elastic contribution that is absent for $c < c^{**}$. Experiments on isotropic solutions of $F$-actin span concentrations near $c^{**}$ for which th…
