We present a numerical study of the slip link model introduced by Likhtman for describing the dy- namics of dense polymer melts. After reviewing the technical aspects associated with the implemen- tation of the model, we extend previous work in several directions. The dependence of the relaxation modulus with the slip link density and the slip link stiffness is reported. Then the nonlinear rheolog- ical properties of the model, for a particular set of parameters, are explored. Finally, we introduce excluded volume interactions in a mean field such as manner in order to describe inhomogeneous systems, and we apply this description to a simple nanocomposite model. With this extension, the slip link model appears as a simple and generic model of a polymer melt, that can be used as an alternative to molecular dynamics for coarse grained simulations of complex polymeric systems.
We report the mechanical response of a model nanocomposite system of poly(styrene) (PS)-silica to large-amplitude oscillatory shear deformations. Nonlinear behavior of PS nanocomposites is discussed with the changes in particle dispersion upon deformation to provide a complete physical picture of their mechanical properties. The elastic stresses for the particle and polymer are resolved by decomposing the total stress into its purely elastic and viscous components for composites at different strain levels within a cycle of deformation. We propose a mechanistic model which captures the deformat…
The evolution over time of the non-linear slip behavior of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer melt on a weakly adsorbing surface made of short non-entangled PDMS chains densely end-grafted to the surface of a fused silica prism has been measured. The critical shear rate at which the melt enters the nonlinear slip regime has been shown to increase with time. The adsorption kinetics of the melt on the same surface has been determined independently using ellipsometry. We show that the evolution of slip can be explained by the slow adsorption of melt chains using the Brochard-de Gennes's model.
Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to investigate the dynamic behavior of the slip length in thin polymer films confined between atomically smooth thermal surfaces. For weak wall-fluid interactions, the shear rate dependence of the slip length acquires a distinct local minimum followed by a rapid growth at higher shear rates. With increasing fluid density, the position of the local minimum is shifted to lower shear rates. We found that the ratio of the shear viscosity to the slip length, which defines the friction coefficient at the liquid/solid interface, undergoes a transition fr…
The temperature dependence of the hydrodynamic boundary condition between a PDMS melt and two different non-attractive surfaces made of either an OTS (octadecyltrichlorosilane) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) or a grafted layer of short PDMS chains has been characterized. A slip length proportional to the fluid viscosity is observed on both surfaces. The slip temperature dependence is deeply influenced by the surfaces. The viscous stress exerted by the polymer liquid on the surface is observed to follow exactly the same temperature dependences as the friction stress of a cross-linked elastomer …
Using Couette and Poiseuille flow, we extract the temperature dependence of the slip length, $δ$, from molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained polymer model in contact with an attractive, corrugated surface. $δ$ is dictated by the ratio of bulk viscosity and surface mobility. At weakly attractive surfaces, a lubrication layer forms, $δ$ is large and increases upon cooling. Close to the glass transition temperature, $T_ g$, very large slip lengths are observed. At a more attractive surface, a``stick y surface layer" is build up, which gives rise to a small slip length. Upon cool ing,…
The shear rate dependence of the slip length in thin polymer films confined between atomically flat surfaces is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The polymer melt is described by the bead-spring model of linear flexible chains. We found that at low shear rates the velocity profiles acquire a pronounced curvature near the wall and the absolute value of the negative slip length is approximately equal to thickness of the viscous interfacial layer. At higher shear rates, the velocity profiles become linear and the slip length increases rapidly as a function of shear rate. The gradual…
The slip behavior of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer melts flowing on non-adsorbing surfaces made of short non-entangled PDMS chains densely end-grafted to silica has been characterized. For high enough shear rates, constant slip lengths proportional to the bulk fluid viscosity have been observed, in agreement with Navier's interfacial equation, and demonstrating that the interfacial Navier's friction coefficient is a local quantity, independent of the polymer molecular weight. Comparing the interfacial shear stresses deduced from these measured slip lengths to available friction stress me…
We have developed a coarse-grained (CG) model of a polymer-clay system consisting of organically modified montmorillonite nanoclay as the nanoparticle in accordance with the MARTINI forcefield. We have used mechanical properties and cleavage free energy of clay particle to respectively parameterize bonded and nonbonded interaction parameters for an organically modified montmorillonite (oMMT) clay particle where intergallery Na+ ions are replaced by tetramethylammonium (TMA) ions. The mechanical properties were determined from the slope of stress-strain curve and cleavage free energy was determ…
A hierarchical (triple scale) simulation methodology is presented for the prediction of the dynamical and rheological properties of high molecular weight entangled polymer melts. The methodology consists of atomistic, moderately coarse-grained (mCG), and highly coarse-grained slip-spring (SLSP) simulations. At the mCG level, a few chemically bonded atoms are lumped into one coarse-grained bead. At this level, the chemical identity of the atomistic system, and the interchain topological constraints (entanglements) are preserved. The mCG potentials are derived by matching local structural distri…
Hydrodynamic slip of a liquid at a solid surface represents a fundamental phenomenon in fluid dynamics that governs liquid transport at small scales. For polymeric liquids, de Gennes predicted that the Navier boundary condition together with the theory of polymer dynamics imply extraordinarily large interfacial slip for entangled polymer melts on ideal surfaces; this Navier-de Gennes model was confirmed using dewetting experiments on ultra-smooth, low-energy substrates. Here, we use capillary leveling - surface tension driven flow of films with initially non-uniform thickness - of polymeric fi…
Using the phenol-terminated polycarbonate blend as an example, we demonstrate that the hydrodynamic boundary conditions for a flow of an adsorbing polymer melt are extremely sensitive to the structure of the epitaxial layer. Under shear, the adsorbed parts (chain ends) of the polymer melt move along the equipotential lines of the surface potential whereas the adsorbed additives serve as the surface defects. In response to the increase of the number of the adsorbed additives the surface layer becomes thinner and solidifies. This results in a gradual transition from the slip to the no-slip bound…
We successfully extend a multiscale simulation (MSS) method to nonisothermal well-entangled polymer melt flows between two coaxial cylinders. In the multiscale simulation, the macroscopic flow system is connected to a number of microscopic systems through the velocity gradient tensor, stress tensor and temperature. At the macroscopic level, in addition to the momentum balance equation, we consider the energy balance equation, where heat generation plays an important role not only in the temperature distribution but also in the flow profile. At the microscopic level, a dual slip-link model is e…
Electrolytes as nanostructured materials are very attractive for batteries or other types of electronic devices. (PEO)8ZnCl2 polymer electrolytes and nanocomposites (PEO)8ZnCl2/TiO2 were prepared from PEO and ZnCl2 and with addition of TiO2 nanograins. The influence of TiO2 nanograins was studied by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) simultaneously recorded with wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at the synchrotron ELETTRA. It was shown by previous impedance spectroscopy (IS) that the room temperature conductivity of nanocomposite polymer electrolyt…
The crazing behavior of polymer nanocomposites formed by blending polymer grafted nanoparticles with an entangled polymer melt is studied by molecular dynamics simulations. We focus on the three key differences in the crazing behavior of a composite relative to the pure homopolymer matrix, namely, a lower yield stress, a smaller extension ratio and a grafted chain length dependent failure stress. The yield behavior is found to be mostly controlled by the local nanoparticle-grafted polymer interfacial energy, with the grafted polymer-polymer matrix interfacial structure being of little to no re…
We investigate the role played by the bidispersity of polymer chains on the local structure and the potential of mean force (PMF) between silica nanoparticles (NPs) in a polystyrene melt. We use the hybrid particle-field molecular dynamics technique which allows to efficiently relax polymer nanocomposites even with high molecular weights. The NPs we investigate are either bare or grafted with polystyrene chains immersed in a melt of free polystyrene chains, whereas the grafted and the free polystyrene chains are either monodisperse or bidisperse. The two-body PMF shows that a bidisperse distrib…
The molecular mechanism of slip at the interface between polymer melts and weakly attractive smooth surfaces is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. In agreement with our previous studies on slip flow of shear-thinning fluids, it is shown that the slip length passes through a local minimum at low shear rates and then increases rapidly at higher shear rates. We found that at sufficiently high shear rates, the slip flow over atomically flat crystalline surfaces is anisotropic. It is demonstrated numerically that the friction coefficient at the liquid-solid interface (the ratio of v…
In this study, we present a novel method to assess the slip length and the viscosity of thin films of highly viscous Newtonian liquids. We quantitatively analyse dewetting fronts of low molecular weight polystyrene melts on Octadecyl- (OTS) and Dodecyltrichlorosilane (DTS) polymer brushes. Using a thin film (lubrication) model derived in the limit of large slip lengths, we can extract slip length and viscosity. We study polymer films with thicknesses between 50 nm and 230 nm and various temperatures above the glass transition. We find slip lengths from 100 nm up to 1 micron on OTS and between …
A mesoscopic, mixed particle- and field-based Brownian dynamics methodology for the simulation of entangled polymer melts has been developed. Polymeric beads consist of several Kuhn segments, and their motion is dictated by the Helmholtz energy of the sample, which is a sum of the entropic elasticity of chain strands between beads, slip springs, and nonbonded interactions. The entanglement effect is introduced by the slip springs, which are springs connecting either nonsuccessive beads on the same chain or beads on different polymer chains. The terminal positions of slip springs are altered du…
We present atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of two Polyethylene systems where all entanglements are trapped: a perfect network, and a melt with grafted chain ends. We examine microscopically at what level topological constraints can be considered as a collective entanglement effect, as in tube model theories, or as certain pairwise uncrossability interactions, as in slip-link models. A pairwise parameter, which varies between these limiting cases, shows that, for the systems studied, the character of the entanglement environment is more pairwise than collective. We employ a novel metho…
We propose that several mechanisms contribute to friction in a polymer melt adsorbed at a structured surface. The first one is the well known disentanglement of bulk polymer chains from the surface layer. However, if the surface is ideal at the atomic scale, the adsorbed parts of polymer chains can move along the equipotential lines of the surface potential. This gives rise to a strong slippage of the melt. For high shear rates chains partially desorb. However, the friction force on adsorbed chains increases, resulting in quasi-stick boundary conditions. We propose that the adsorbed layers can…
Flow instabilities are widely studied because of their economical and theoretical interest, however few results have been published about the polymer electrification during the extrusion. Nevertheless the generation of the electrical charges is characteristic of the interaction between the polymer melt and the die walls. In our study, the capillary extrusion of a metallocene polyethylene (mPE) through a tungsten carbide die is characterized through accurate electrical measurements thanks a Faraday pail. No significant charges are observed since the extrudate surface remains smooth. However, as…
In this paper we study a system of entangled chains that bear reversible cross-links in a melt state. The cross-links are tethered uniformly on the backbone of each chain. A slip-link type model for the system is presented and solved for the relaxation modulus. The effects of entanglements and reversible cross-linkers are modelled as discrete form of constraints that influence the motion of the primitive path. In contrast to a non-associating entangled system the model calculations demonstrate that the elastic modulus has a much higher first plateau and a delayed terminal relaxation. These eff…
Alkylsilane self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are often used as model substrates for their ease of preparation and hydrophobic properties. We have observed that these atomically smooth monolayers also provide a slip boundary condition for dewetting films composed of unentangled polymers. This slip length, an indirect measure of the friction between a given liquid and different solids, is switchable and can be increased [Fetzer et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 2005; Bäumchen et al. J. Phys.: Cond. Matt. 2012] if the alkyl chain length is changed from 18 to 12 backbone carbons, for example. Typically, th…

Molecular dynamics simulations of a short-chain polymer melt between two brush-covered surfaces under shear have been performed. The end-grafted polymers which constitute the brush have the same chemical properties as the free chains in the melt and provide a soft deformable substrate. Polymer chains are described by a coarse-grained bead-spring model with Lennard-Jones interactions between the beads and a FENE potential between nearest neighbors along the backbone of the chains. The grafting density of the brush layer offers a way of controlling the behavior of the surface without altering th…
The dynamic rheology of a polymer melt composed of short chains with ten beads between rapidly oscillating plates is investigated for various oscillation frequencies by using the hybrid simulation of the molecular dynamics and computational fluid dynamics. In the rapidly oscillating plates, non-uniform boundary layer flows are generated over the plate due to inertia of the fluid, and the local rheological properties of the melt are spatially varied according to the local flow fields. Far from the plate, the local strain decreases as the oscillation frequency increases such that the dynamic rhe…
The results obtained from molecular dynamics simulations of the friction at an interface between polymer melts and weakly attractive crystalline surfaces are reported. We consider a coarse-grained bead-spring model of linear chains with adjustable intrinsic stiffness. The structure and relaxation dynamics of polymer chains near interfaces are quantified by the radius of gyration and decay of the time autocorrelation function of the first normal mode. We found that the friction coefficient at small slip velocities exhibits a distinct maximum which appears due to shear-induced alignment of semif…
