The molecular mechanism of slip at the interface between polymer melts and weakly attractive smooth surfaces is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. In agreement with our previous studies on slip flow of shear-thinning fluids, it is shown that the slip length passes through a local minimum at low shear rates and then increases rapidly at higher shear rates. We found that at sufficiently high shear rates, the slip flow over atomically flat crystalline surfaces is anisotropic. It is demonstrated numerically that the friction coefficient at the liquid-solid interface (the ratio of viscosity and slip length) undergoes a transition from a constant value to the power-law decay as a function of the slip velocity. The characteristic velocity of the transition correlates well with the diffusion velocity of fluid monomers in the first fluid layer near the solid wall at equilibrium. We also show that in the linear regime, the friction coefficient is well described by a function of a single variable, which is a product of the magnitude of surface-induced peak in the structure factor and the contact density of the adjacent fluid layer. The universal relationship between the friction coefficient and induced fluid structure holds for a number of material parameters of the interface: fluid density, chain length, wall-fluid interaction energy, wall density, lattice type and orientation, thermal or solid walls.
Accurate prediction of interfacial slip in nanoscale channels is required by many microfluidic applications. Existing hydrodynamic solutions based on Maxwellian boundary conditions include an empirical parameter that depends on material properties and pore dimensions. This paper presents a derivation of a new expression for the slip coefficient that is not based on the assumptions concerning the details of solid-fluid collisions and whose parameters are obtainable from \textit{equilibrium} simulation. The results for the slip coefficient and flow rates are in good agreement with non-equilibriu…
We present a numerical study of the slip link model introduced by Likhtman for describing the dy- namics of dense polymer melts. After reviewing the technical aspects associated with the implemen- tation of the model, we extend previous work in several directions. The dependence of the relaxation modulus with the slip link density and the slip link stiffness is reported. Then the nonlinear rheolog- ical properties of the model, for a particular set of parameters, are explored. Finally, we introduce excluded volume interactions in a mean field such as manner in order to describe inhomogeneous s…
We study the effect of atomic scale surface-lubricant interactions on nanoscale boundary-lubricated friction, by considering two example surfaces - hydrophilic mica and hydrophobic graphene - confining thin layers of water in molecular dynamics simulations. We observe stick-slip dynamics for thin water films confined by mica sheets, involving periodic breaking-reforming transitions of atomic scale capillary water bridges formed around the potassium ions of mica. However, only smooth sliding without stick-slip events is observed for water confined by graphene, as well as for thicker water layer…
The shear rate dependence of the slip length in thin polymer films confined between atomically flat surfaces is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The polymer melt is described by the bead-spring model of linear flexible chains. We found that at low shear rates the velocity profiles acquire a pronounced curvature near the wall and the absolute value of the negative slip length is approximately equal to thickness of the viscous interfacial layer. At higher shear rates, the velocity profiles become linear and the slip length increases rapidly as a function of shear rate. The gradual…
We have developed a dynamic self-consistent field theory, without any adjustable parameters, for unentangled polymer blends under shear. Our model accounts for the interaction between polymers, and enables one to compute the evolution of the local rheology, microstructure and the conformations of the polymer chains under shear self-consistently. We use this model to study the interfacial dynamics in sheared polymer blends and make a quantitative comparison between this model and Molecular Dynamics simulations. We find good agreement between the two methods.
The slip phenomena in thin polymer films confined by either flat or periodically corrugated surfaces are investigated by molecular dynamics and continuum simulations. For atomically flat surfaces and weak wall-fluid interactions, the shear rate dependence of the slip length has a distinct local minimum which is followed by a rapid increase at higher shear rates. For corrugated surfaces with wavelength larger than the radius of gyration of polymer chains, the effective slip length decays monotonically with increasing corrugation amplitude. At small amplitudes, this decay is reproduced accuratel…
Stick-slip, manifest as intermittent tangential motion between two solids, is a well-known friction instability that occurs in a number of natural and engineering systems. In the context of adhesive polymer interfaces, this phenomenon has often been solely associated with Schallamach waves, which are termed slow waves due to their low propagation speeds. We study the dynamics of a model polymer interface using coupled force measurements and high speed \emph{in situ} imaging, to explore the occurrence of stick-slip linked to other slow wave phenomena. Two new waves---slip pulse and separation p…
Polymer solutions subject to pressure driven flow and in nanoscale slit pores are systematically investigated using the dissipative particle dynamics approach. We investigated the effect of molecular weight, polymer concentration and flow rate on the profiles across the channel of the fluid and polymer velocities, polymers density, and the three components of the polymers radius of gyration. We found that the mean streaming fluid velocity decreases as the polymer molecular weight or/and polymer concentration is increased, and that the deviation of the velocity profile from the parabolic profil…
We calculate the free energy and the pressure of a weakly slip-linked Gaussian polymer chains. We show that the equilibrium statistics of a slip-linked system is different from one of the corresponding ideal chain system without any constraints by slip-links. It is shown that the pressure of a slip-linked system decreases compared with the ideal system, which implies that slip-linked chains spontaneously form aggregated cluster like compact structures. These are qualitatively consistent with previous theoretical analyses or multi chain simulations. We also show that repulsive potentials betwee…
Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to investigate the dynamic behavior of the slip length in thin polymer films confined between atomically smooth thermal surfaces. For weak wall-fluid interactions, the shear rate dependence of the slip length acquires a distinct local minimum followed by a rapid growth at higher shear rates. With increasing fluid density, the position of the local minimum is shifted to lower shear rates. We found that the ratio of the shear viscosity to the slip length, which defines the friction coefficient at the liquid/solid interface, undergoes a transition fr…
A new method of polymer characterization, based on permeation studies using nanoscale pores, was recently proposed by Brochard and de Gennes. In the present paper, we study how this method, initially developped for star polymers can be extended to comb-like polymers.
The progressive onset of slip at the wall, which corresponds to a slip length increasing with the solicitation time before reaching a plateau, has been investigated for model viscoelastic polymer solutions, allowing one to vary the longest relaxation time while keeping constant solid - fluid interactions. A hydrodynamic model based on a Maxwell fluid and the classical Navier's hypothesis of a linear response for the friction stress at the interface fully accounts for the data, without any adjustable parameter. No viscoelastic response needs be postulated for the friction, reflecting the local …
We consider the response of an adsorbed polymer that is pulled by an AFM within a simple geometric framework. We separately consider the cases of i) fixed polymer-surface contact point, ii) sticky case where the polymer is peeled off from the substrate, and iii) slippery case where the polymer glides over the surface. The resultant behavior depends on the value of the surface friction coefficient and the adsorption strength. Our resultant force profiles in principle allow to extract both from non-equilibrium force-spectroscopic data.
The evolution over time of the non-linear slip behavior of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer melt on a weakly adsorbing surface made of short non-entangled PDMS chains densely end-grafted to the surface of a fused silica prism has been measured. The critical shear rate at which the melt enters the nonlinear slip regime has been shown to increase with time. The adsorption kinetics of the melt on the same surface has been determined independently using ellipsometry. We show that the evolution of slip can be explained by the slow adsorption of melt chains using the Brochard-de Gennes's model.
A mesoscopic, mixed particle- and field-based Brownian dynamics methodology for the simulation of entangled polymer melts has been developed. Polymeric beads consist of several Kuhn segments, and their motion is dictated by the Helmholtz energy of the sample, which is a sum of the entropic elasticity of chain strands between beads, slip springs, and nonbonded interactions. The entanglement effect is introduced by the slip springs, which are springs connecting either nonsuccessive beads on the same chain or beads on different polymer chains. The terminal positions of slip springs are altered du…
The role of the polymer volume fraction, $ϕ$, on steady state slippage and interfacial friction is investigated for a semi-dilute polystyrene solutions in diethyl phthalate in contact with two solid surfaces. Signicant slippage is evidenced for all samples, with slip lengths b obeying a power law dependence. The Navier's interfacial friction coecient, k, is deduced from the slip length measurements and from independent measurements of the solutions viscosity $η$. The observed scaling of k versus $ϕ$ clearly excludes a molecular mechanism of friction based on the existence of a depletion layer.…
Using Couette and Poiseuille flow, we extract the temperature dependence of the slip length, $δ$, from molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained polymer model in contact with an attractive, corrugated surface. $δ$ is dictated by the ratio of bulk viscosity and surface mobility. At weakly attractive surfaces, a lubrication layer forms, $δ$ is large and increases upon cooling. Close to the glass transition temperature, $T_ g$, very large slip lengths are observed. At a more attractive surface, a``stick y surface layer" is build up, which gives rise to a small slip length. Upon cool ing,…
We propose a single chain slip-spring model, which is based on the slip-spring model by Likhtman [A. E. Likhtman, Macromolecules, 38, 6128 (2005)], for fast rheology simulations of entangled polymers on a GPU. We modify the original slip-spring model slightly for efficient calculations on a GPU. Our model is designed to satisfy the detailed balance condition, which enables us to analyze its static or linear response properties easily. We theoretically analyze several statistical properties of the model, such as the linear response, which will be useful to analyze simulation data. We show that …
Recent experiments suggest that shear-enhanced growth of concentration fluctuations in polymer solutions is strongly influenced by solid boundaries. We analyze the dynamics of a model of a sheared polymer solution, accounting for the effect of stress variations on mass flux and for wall-slip. If (and only if) these effects are present, the flow exhibits a boundary-localized instability consistent with experimental observations. Even in the absence of flow instability, thermally-driven concentration fluctuations are significantly enhanced near the boundary.
The temperature dependence of the hydrodynamic boundary condition between a PDMS melt and two different non-attractive surfaces made of either an OTS (octadecyltrichlorosilane) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) or a grafted layer of short PDMS chains has been characterized. A slip length proportional to the fluid viscosity is observed on both surfaces. The slip temperature dependence is deeply influenced by the surfaces. The viscous stress exerted by the polymer liquid on the surface is observed to follow exactly the same temperature dependences as the friction stress of a cross-linked elastomer …
Free energy barrier for entry of a charged polymer into a nanoscale channel by a driving electric field is studied theoretically and using molecular dynamics simulations. Dependence of the barrier height on the polymer length, the driving field strength, and the channel entrance geometry is investigated. Squeezing effect of the electric field on the polymer before its entry to the channel is taken into account. It is shown that lateral confinement of the polymer prior to its entry changes the polymer length dependence of the barrier height noticeably. Our theory and simulation results are in g…
Probing the fluid dynamics of thin films is an excellent tool to study the solid/liquid boundary condition. There is no need for external stimulation or pumping of the liquid due to the fact that the dewetting process, an internal mechanism, acts as a driving force for liquid flow. Viscous dissipation within the liquid and slippage balance interfacial forces. Thereby, friction at the solid/liquid interface plays a key role towards the flow dynamics of the liquid. Probing the temporal and spatial evolution of growing holes or retracting straight fronts gives, in combination with theoretical mod…
Understanding the transmission of nanoscale forces in the pico-to-nanonewton range is important in polymer physics. While physical approaches have limitations in analyzing the local force distribution in condensed environments, chemical analysis using force probes is promising. However, there are stringent requirements for probing the local forces generated before structural damage. The magnitude of those forces corresponds to the range below covalent bond scission (from 200 pN to several nN) and above thermal fluctuation (several pN). Here, we report a conformationally flexible dual-fluoresce…
Hydrodynamic slip of a liquid at a solid surface represents a fundamental phenomenon in fluid dynamics that governs liquid transport at small scales. For polymeric liquids, de Gennes predicted that the Navier boundary condition together with the theory of polymer dynamics imply extraordinarily large interfacial slip for entangled polymer melts on ideal surfaces; this Navier-de Gennes model was confirmed using dewetting experiments on ultra-smooth, low-energy substrates. Here, we use capillary leveling - surface tension driven flow of films with initially non-uniform thickness - of polymeric fi…
The electric-field-driven entry process of flexible charged polymers such as single stranded DNA (ssDNA) into asymmetric nanoscale channels such as alpha-hemolysin protein channel is studied theoretically and using molecular dynamics simulations. Dependence of the height of the free-energy barrier on the polymer length, the strength of the applied electric field and the channel entrance geometry is investigated. It is shown that the squeezing effect of the driving field on the polymer and the lateral confinement of the polymer before its entry to the channel crucially affect the barrier height…
There is ample evidence that polymer brushes reduce friction between surfaces. Several industrial applications take advantage of this fact, such as those in plastic bag production, where the brushes act as slip agents; however, the complex mechanisms that give rise to such reduction of friction are not yet fully understood. In this work we report coarse grained, dissipative particle dynamics simulations carried out for surfaces functionalized with erukamide brushes, a polymer commonly used in the plastics industry as a slip agent between surfaces. We calculate their rheological properties, suc…
Hydrodynamic slippage plays a crucial role in the flow dynamics of thin polymer films, as recently shown by the analysis of the profiles of liquid fronts. For long-chained polymer films it was reported that a deviation from a symmetric profile is a result of viscoelastic effects. In this Letter, however, evidence is given that merely a slip boundary condition at the solid/liquid interface can lead to an asymmetric profile. Dewetting experiments of entangled polymer melts on diverse substrates allow a direct comparison of rim morphologies. Variation of molecular weight Mw clearly reveals that s…
Alkylsilane self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are often used as model substrates for their ease of preparation and hydrophobic properties. We have observed that these atomically smooth monolayers also provide a slip boundary condition for dewetting films composed of unentangled polymers. This slip length, an indirect measure of the friction between a given liquid and different solids, is switchable and can be increased [Fetzer et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 2005; Bäumchen et al. J. Phys.: Cond. Matt. 2012] if the alkyl chain length is changed from 18 to 12 backbone carbons, for example. Typically, th…
The influence of periodic and random surface textures on the flow structure and effective slip length in Newtonian fluids is investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We consider a situation where the typical pattern size is smaller than the channel height and the local boundary conditions at wetting and nonwetting regions are characterized by finite slip lengths. In case of anisotropic patterns, transverse flow profiles are reported for flows over alternating stripes of different wettability when the shear flow direction is misaligned with respect to the stripe orientation. The ang…
Adhesion between two surfaces depend on the chemical and the mechanical properties of both the materials. However, heterogeneities (surface or bulk) affect the adhesion between the two surfaces tremendously. In this work, we study the role of externally deposited nanoscale heterogeneities on their adhesion behavior. Silica nanoparticles in the bulk polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer matrix act as external heterogeneities, which subsequently affect their adhesion. The nanoscale heterogeneities change the polymer environment locally, which subsequently modify its mechanical properties, e.g. ela…
Stability of lubricating fluid infused slippery surfaces is a concern for scientists and engineers and attempts are being made for its improvement. Lubricating oil coated slippery surface for aqueous drops is one of the important candidates in this class and their stability needs be improved to make them useful for practical applications. Cloaking of water drops with thin lubricant layer results in the loss of lubricant leading to deterioration of slippery behavior. Surface roughness or porosity provides larger surface area to the lubricating fluid and would to affect the stability of the lubr…
Wrinkling patterns at the metallized surface of thin polymer films are shown to be sensitive to the sticky or slippery character of the polymer/substrate interface (titanium coating, polystyrene film and coated silicon substrate). Selective prefered wrinkle orientation and amplitude are achieved. Existing theoretical models are expanded to specific boundary conditions (adhesive vs slippery) and rationalize these observations.
Hydrodynamic slip of Newtonian liquids is a new phenomenon, the origin of which is not yet clarified. There are various direct and indirect techniques to measure slippage. Here we describe a method to characterize the influence of slippage on the shape of rims surrounding growing holes in thin polymer films. Atomic force microscopy is used to study the shape of the rim; by analyzing its profile and applying an appropriate lubrication model we are able to determine the slip length for polystyrene films. In the experiments we study polymer films below the entanglement length that dewet from hydr…
It has been established that the entangled polymer dynamics can be reasonably described by single chain models such as tube and slip-link models. Although the entanglement effect is a result of the hard-core interaction between chains, linkage between the single chain models and the real multi-chain system has not been established yet. In this study, we propose a multi-chain slip-spring model where bead-spring chains are dispersed in space and connected by slip-springs inspired by the single chain slip-spring model [A. E. Likhtman, Macromolecules 38, 6128 (2005)]. In this model the entanglemen…
The properties of polymeric nanofibers can be tailored and enhanced by properly managing the structure of the polymeric molecules at the nanoscale. Although electrospun polymer fibers are increasingly exploited in many technological applications, their internal nanostructure, determining their improved physical properties, is still poorly investigated and understood. Here, we unravel the internal structure of electrospun functional nanofibers made by prototype conjugated polymers. The unique features of near field optical measurements are exploited to investigate the nanoscale spatial variatio…
The slip behavior of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer melts flowing on non-adsorbing surfaces made of short non-entangled PDMS chains densely end-grafted to silica has been characterized. For high enough shear rates, constant slip lengths proportional to the bulk fluid viscosity have been observed, in agreement with Navier's interfacial equation, and demonstrating that the interfacial Navier's friction coefficient is a local quantity, independent of the polymer molecular weight. Comparing the interfacial shear stresses deduced from these measured slip lengths to available friction stress me…
We report an electron-beam based method for the nanoscale patterning of the poly(ethylene oxide)/LiClO$_{4}$ polymer electrolyte. We use the patterned polymer electrolyte as a high capacitance gate dielectric in single nanowire transistors and obtain subthreshold swings comparable to conventional metal/oxide wrap-gated nanowire transistors. Patterning eliminates gate/contact overlap which reduces parasitic effects and enables multiple, independently controllable gates. The method's simplicity broadens the scope for using polymer electrolyte gating in studies of nanowires and other nanoscale de…
Using the phenol-terminated polycarbonate blend as an example, we demonstrate that the hydrodynamic boundary conditions for a flow of an adsorbing polymer melt are extremely sensitive to the structure of the epitaxial layer. Under shear, the adsorbed parts (chain ends) of the polymer melt move along the equipotential lines of the surface potential whereas the adsorbed additives serve as the surface defects. In response to the increase of the number of the adsorbed additives the surface layer becomes thinner and solidifies. This results in a gradual transition from the slip to the no-slip bound…
Thin liquid films on surfaces are part of our everyday life, they serve e.g. as coatings or lubricants. The stability of a thin layer is governed by interfacial forces, described by the effective interface potential, and has been subject of many studies in the last decades. In recent years, the dynamics of thin liquid films came into focus since results on the reduction of the glass transition temperature raised new questions on the behavior of especially polymeric liquids in confined geometries. The new focus was fired by theoretical models that proposed significant implication of the boundar…
Understanding and controlling self-assembly processes at multiple length scales is vital if we are to design and create advanced materials. In particular, our ability to organise matter on the nanoscale has advanced considerably, but still lags far behind our skill in manipulating individual molecules. New tools allowing controlled nanoscale assembly are sorely needed, as well as the physical understanding of how they work. Here, we report a new method for the production of highly anisotropic nanoparticles with controlled dimensions based on a morphological transformation process (MORPH for sh…
Dewetting of thin polystyrene films deposited onto silicone wafers at temperatures close to the glass transition exhibits unusual dynamics and front morphologies. Here, we present a new theoretical approach of these phenomena taking into account both the viscoelastic properties of the film and the non-zero velocity of the film at the interface with the substrate (due to slippage). We then show how these two ingredients lead to : (a) A very asymmetric shape of the rim as the film dewetts, (b) A decrease of the dewetting velocity with time like $t^{-{1/2}}$ for times shorter than the reptation t…
When wall slip wins over shear flow: A temperature-dependent Eyring slip law and a thermal multiscale model for diamond-like carbon lubricated by a polyalphaolefin oil
Understanding confined flows of complex fluids requires simultaneous access to the mechanical behaviour of the liquid and the boundary condition at the interfaces. Here, we use evanescent wave microscopy to investigate near-surface flows of semi-dilute, unentangled polyacrylamide solutions. By using both neutral and anionic polymers, we show that monomer charge plays a key role in confined polymer dynamics. For solutions in contact with glass, the neutral polymers display chain-sized adsorbed layers, while a shear-rate-dependent apparent slip length is observed for anionic polymer solutions. T…
Classical hydrodynamic models predict that infinite work is required to move a three-phase contact line, defined here as the line where a liquid/vapor interface intersects a solid surface. Assuming a slip boundary condition, in which the liquid slides against the solid, such an unphysical prediction is avoided. In this article, we present the results of experiments in which a contact line moves and where slip is a dominating and controllable factor. Spherical cap shaped polystyrene microdroplets, with non-equilibrium contact angle, are placed on solid self-assembled monolayer coatings from whi…
In this study, we present a novel method to assess the slip length and the viscosity of thin films of highly viscous Newtonian liquids. We quantitatively analyse dewetting fronts of low molecular weight polystyrene melts on Octadecyl- (OTS) and Dodecyltrichlorosilane (DTS) polymer brushes. Using a thin film (lubrication) model derived in the limit of large slip lengths, we can extract slip length and viscosity. We study polymer films with thicknesses between 50 nm and 230 nm and various temperatures above the glass transition. We find slip lengths from 100 nm up to 1 micron on OTS and between …
A hierarchical (triple scale) simulation methodology is presented for the prediction of the dynamical and rheological properties of high molecular weight entangled polymer melts. The methodology consists of atomistic, moderately coarse-grained (mCG), and highly coarse-grained slip-spring (SLSP) simulations. At the mCG level, a few chemically bonded atoms are lumped into one coarse-grained bead. At this level, the chemical identity of the atomistic system, and the interchain topological constraints (entanglements) are preserved. The mCG potentials are derived by matching local structural distri…
We calculate the plateau moduli of several single-chain slip-link and slip-spring models for entangled polymers. In these models, the entanglement effects are phenomenologically modeled by introducing topological constraints such as slip-links and slip-springs. The average number of segments between two neighboring slip-links or slip-springs, $N_{0}$, is an input parameter in these models. To analyze experimental data, the characteristic number of segments in entangled polymers $N_{e}$ estimated from the plateau modulus is used instead. Both $N_{0}$ and $N_{e}$ characterize the topological con…
Using canonical Monte Carlo simulations, we introduce a new numerical procedure for comparing the entropic exponents of polymers with different constraints and/or topologies. Setting up competitions between polymer segments which can exchange monomers according to their free energies, we obtain the universal exponents of partition functions, independently of any knowledge of the non-universal part. The method is successfully tested for closed polymer loops decorated with sliding rings. We also investigate the entropic exponents of loops with a fixed knot type, in which case we are limited by s…
We successfully extend a multiscale simulation (MSS) method to nonisothermal well-entangled polymer melt flows between two coaxial cylinders. In the multiscale simulation, the macroscopic flow system is connected to a number of microscopic systems through the velocity gradient tensor, stress tensor and temperature. At the macroscopic level, in addition to the momentum balance equation, we consider the energy balance equation, where heat generation plays an important role not only in the temperature distribution but also in the flow profile. At the microscopic level, a dual slip-link model is e…
The optical polarimetry technique is used to explore molecular ordering of nematic liquid crystals 5FPFFPP3 embedded in parallel cylindrical channels of alumina membranes with pore walls covered by a SE-1211 polymer film enhancing normal anchoring. A chemical film deposition from organic solution apparently results in inhomogeneous coverage with local islands on the channels walls. Accordingly, a coexistence of differently ordered LC regions (nanodomains), characterized by positive and negative anisotropy, results in a weak effective (average) optical birefringence. Repeated polymer deposition…
We investigate the effect of short chains on slip of highly entangled polystyrenes (PS) during thin film dewetting from non-wetting fluorinated surfaces. Binary and ternary mixtures were prepared from monodisperse PS with weight average molecular weights $5 < M_\textrm{w} < 490$ kg/mol. Flow dynamics and rim morphology of dewetting holes were captured using optical and atomic force microscopy. Slip properties are assessed in the framework of hydrodynamic models describing the rim height profile of dewetting holes. We show that short chains with $M_\textrm{w}$ below the polymer critical molecul…
Simulations in which a globular ring polymer with delocalized knots is separated in two interacting loops by a slipping link, or in two non-interacting globuli by a wall with a hole, show how the minimal crossing number of the knots controls the equilibrium statistics. With slipping link the ring length is divided between the loops according to a simple law, but with unexpectedly large fluctuations. These are suppressed only for unknotted loops, whose length distribution shows always a fast power law decay. We also discover and explain a topological effect interfering with that of surface tens…
The question of how soft polymers slide against hard surfaces is of significant scientific interest, given its practical implications. Specifically, such sytems commonly show interesting stick-slip dynamics, wherein the interface moves intermittently despite uniform remote loading. \mt{The year 2021 marked the 50$^{th}$ anniversary of the publication of a seminal paper by Adolf Schallamach (\emph{Wear}, 1971)} that first revealed an intimate link between stick-slip and moving detachment waves, now called Schallamach waves. We place Schallamach's results in a broader context and review subseque…
This study reveals the influence of the surface energy and solid/liquid boundary condition on the breakup mechanism of dewetting ultra-thin polymer films. Using silane self-assembled monolayers, SiO$_2$ substrates are rendered hydrophobic and provide a strong slip rather than a no-slip solid/liquid boundary condition. On undergoing these changes, the thin-film breakup morphology changes dramatically -- from a spinodal mechanism to a breakup which is governed by nucleation and growth. The experiments reveal a dependence of the hole density on film thickness and temperature. The combination of l…
