This study is concern with the numerical solution of the initial boundary value problem (IBVP) for the semilinear scale-invariant wave equation with damping and mass and power non-linearity. Numerical results of the aforementioned IBVP is obtained by using standart Galerkin finite element method (GFEM) for the spatial variable and the temporal variable is discretized with the finite difference method (FDM). The FDM is also used for the discretization of the spatial variable for the accuracy of the numerical results. The obtained numerical results with different numerical schemes are observed compatible. Numerical simulation of the considered problem is given for the different initial conditions.
In this paper, we develop a well-balanced oscillation-free discontinuous Galerkin (OFDG) method for solving the shallow water equations with a non-flat bottom topography. One notable feature of the constructed scheme is the well-balanced property, which preserves exactly the hydrostatic equilibrium solutions up to machine error. Another feature is the non-oscillatory property, which is very important in the numerical simulation when there exist some shock discontinuities. To control the spurious oscillations, we construct an OFDG method with an extra damping term to the existing well-balanced …
In this paper, we develop an oscillation free local discontinuous Galerkin (OFLDG) method for solving nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations. Following the idea of our recent work [J. Lu, Y. Liu, and C.-W. Shu, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 59(2021), pp. 1299-1324.], we add the damping terms to the LDG scheme to control the spurious oscillations when solutions have a large gradient. The $L^2$-stability and optimal priori error estimates for the semi-discrete scheme are established. The numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method maintains the high-order accuracy and controls the spurio…
The purpose of the present paper is to compare two semi-Lagrangian methods in the context of the four-dimensional Vlasov--Poisson equation. More specifically, our goal is to compare the performance of the more recently developed semi-Lagrangian discontinuous Galerkin scheme with the de facto standard in Eulerian Vlasov simulation (i.e. using cubic spline interpolation). To that end, we perform simulations for nonlinear Landau damping and a two-stream instability and provide benchmarks for the SeLaLib and sldg codes (both on a workstation and using MPI on a cluster). We find that the semi-Lagra…
This paper considers the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for solving the Vlasov-Maxwell (VM) system, a fundamental model for collisionless magnetized plasma. The DG methods provide accurate numerical description with conservation and stability properties. However, to resolve the high dimensional probability distribution function, the computational cost is the main bottleneck even for modern-day supercomputers. This work studies the applicability of a post-processing technique to the DG solution to enhance its accuracy and resolution for the VM system. In particular, we prove the superconve…
We propose a high-order discontinuous Galerkin scheme for nonlinear acoustic waves on polytopic meshes. To model sound propagation with and without losses, we use Westervelt's nonlinear wave equation with and without strong damping. Challenges in the numerical analysis lie in handling the nonlinearity in the model, which involves the derivatives in time of the acoustic velocity potential, and in preventing the equation from degenerating. We rely in our approach on the Banach fixed-point theorem combined with a stability and convergence analysis of a linear wave equation with a variable coeffic…
We present a stable discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method with a perfectly matched layer (PML) for three and two space dimensional linear elastodynamics, in velocity-stress formulation, subject to well-posed linear boundary conditions. First, we consider the elastodynamics equation, in a cuboidal domain, and derive an unsplit PML truncating the domain using complex coordinate stretching. Leveraging the hyperbolic structure of the underlying system, we construct continuous energy estimates, in the time domain for the elastic wave equation, and in the Laplace space for a sequence of PML model probl…
The study of uncertainty propagation is of fundamental importance in plasma physics simulations. To this end, in the present work we propose a novel stochastic Galerkin (sG) particle {method} for collisional kinetic models of plasmas under the effect of uncertainties. This class of methods is based on a generalized polynomial chaos (gPC) expansion of the particles' position and velocity. In details, we introduce a stochastic particle approximation for the Vlasov-Poisson system with a BGK term describing plasma collisions. A careful reformulation of such dynamics is needed to perform the sG pro…
Bresse-Timoshenko beam model with thermal, mass diffusion and theormoelastic effects is studied. We state and prove the well-posedness of problem. The global existence and uniqueness of the solution is proved by using the classical Faedo-Galerkin approximations along with two a priori estimates. We prove an exponential stability estimate for problem under an unusual assumption, and by using a multiplier technique in two different cases, with frictional damping in the angular rotation and with frictional damping in the vertical displacement. In numerical parts, we first obtained a numerical sch…

We present a scalable 2D Galerkin spectral element method solution to the linearized potential flow radiation problem for wave induced forcing of a floating offshore structure. The pseudo-impulsive formulation of the problem is solved in the time-domain using a Gaussian displacement signal tailored to the discrete resolution. The added mass and damping coefficients are then obtained via Fourier transformation. The spectral element method is used to discretize the spatial fluid domain, whereas the classical explicit 4-stage 4th order Runge-Kutta scheme is employed for the temporal integration. …
We propose and analyze a seamless extended Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization of advection-diffusion equations on semi-infinite domains. The semi-infinite half line is split into a finite subdomain where the model uses a standard polynomial basis, and a semi-unbounded subdomain where scaled Laguerre functions are employed as basis and test functions. Numerical fluxes enable the coupling at the interface between the two subdomains in the same way as standard single domain DG interelement fluxes. A novel linear analysis on the extended DG model yields unconditional stability with respect…
The purpose of this work is to describe in detail the development of the Spectral Difference Raviart-Thomas (SDRT) formulation for two and three-dimensional tensor-product elements and simplexes. Through the process, the authors establish the equivalence between the SDRT method and the Flux-Reconstruction (FR) approach under the assumption of the linearity of the flux and the mesh uniformity. Such a connection allows to build a new family of FR schemes for two and three-dimensional simplexes and also to recover the well-known FR-SD method with tensor-product elements. In addition, a thorough a…
It is well-known that reliable and efficient domain truncation is crucial to accurate numerical solution of most wave propagation problems. The perfectly matched layer (PML) is a method which, when stable, can provide a domain truncation scheme which is convergent with increasing layer width/damping. The difficulties in using the PML are primarily associated with stability, which can be present at the continuous level or be triggered by numerical approximations. The mathematical and numerical analysis of the PML for hyperbolic wave propagation problems has been an area of active research. It i…
