A comprehensive study of multifrequency correlations can shed light on the nature of variation for blazars. In this work, we collect the long-term radio, optical and $γ$-ray light curves of PKS 1502+106. After performing the localized cross-correlation function analysis, we find that correlations between radio and $γ$-ray or $V$ band are beyond the $3σ$ significance level. The lag of the $γ$-ray relative to 15 GHz is $-60^{+5}_{-10}$ days, translating to a distance $3.18^{+0.50}_{-0.27}$ parsec (pc) between them. Within uncertainties, the locations of the $γ$-ray and optical emitting regions are roughly the same, and are away from the jet base within $1.2$ pc. The derived magnetic field in optical and $γ$-ray emitting regions is about $0.36$ G. The logarithm of $γ$-ray flux is significantly linearly correlated with that of $V$ band fluxes, which can be explained by the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) process, the external Compton (EC) processes, or the combination of them. We find a significant linear correlation in the plot of $\log\prod$ (polarization degree) versus $\log νF_ν$ at $V$ band, and use the empirical relation $Π\sim \sin^n θ'$ ($θ'$ is the observing angle in the comoving frame blob) to explain it. The behaviors of color index (generally redder when brighter at the active state) and $γ$-ray spectral index (softer when brighter) could be well explained by the twisted jet model. These findings suggest that the curvature effect (mainly due to the change of the viewing angle) is dominant in the variation phenomena of fluxes, spectral indices, and polarization degrees for PKS 1502+106.
The synchrotron peak of the X-ray bright High Energy Peaked Blazar (HBL) PKS 2155$-$304 occurs in the UV-EUV region and hence its X-ray emission (0.6--10 keV) lies mostly in the falling part of the synchrotron hump. We aim to study the X-ray emission of PKS 2155$-$304 during different intensity states in 2009$-$2014 using XMM$-$Newton satellite. We studied the spectral curvature of all of the observations to provide crucial information on the energy distribution of the non-thermal particles. Most of the observations show curvature or deviation from a single power-law and can be well modeled by…
The addition of a 28 m Cherenkov telescope (CT5) to the H.E.S.S. array extended the experiment's sensitivity to lower energies, providing new opportunities for studies of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) with soft intrinsic spectra and at high redshifts. The high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects PKS 2155-304 (z = 0.116) and PG 1553+113 (0.43 < z < 0.58) are among the brightest objects in the gamma-ray sky, both showing clear signatures of gamma-ray absorption at E > 100 GeV interpreted as being due to interactions with the extragalactic background light (EBL). Multiple observational campaigns of P…
The broad band optical/UV and X-ray spectra of blazars have been often modeled as synchrotron component arising from a broken power-law distribution of electrons. A broken power-law distribution is expected, since the high energy electrons undergo radiative losses effectively. The change in the energy index should then be approximately 1 and corresponds to a spectral index difference of 0.5. However, one of the long outstanding problems has been that the observed index change is significantly different. On the other hand, recent high quality observations of blazars suggest that their local spe…
Spectral energy distribution and its variability are basic tools for understanding the physical processes operating in active galactic nuclei (AGN). In this paper we report the results of a one-year near infra red (NIR) and optical monitoring of a sample of 22 AGN known to be gamma-ray emitters, aimed at discovering correlations between optical and gamma-ray emission. We observed our objects with the Rapid Eye Mount (REM) telescope in J, H, K, and R bands nearly twice every month during their visibility window and derived light curves and spectral indexes. We also analyzed the gamma-ray data f…
We present the $γ$-ray observations of the flat-spectrum radio quasar PKS 1441+25 (z=0.939), using the {\it Fermi} large Area Telescope data accumulated during January - December 2015. A $γ$-ray flare was observed in January 24, when the flux increased up to $(2.22\pm0.38)\times10^{-6}\;{\rm photon\:cm^{-2}\:s^{-1}}$ with the flux-doubling time scale being as short as $\sim1.44$ days. The spectral analysis shows that from April 13 to April 28, 2015 the MeV-to-GeV photon index has hardened and changes in the range of $Γ=(1.73-1.79)$ for most of the time. The hardest photon index of $Γ=1.54\pm0.…
We report on temporal and spectral study of a flat spectrum radio quasar, PKS B1222+216, in flare state to get insight into acceleration and emission mechanisms inside the jet. This is one of the brightest and highly active blazar in the MeV-GeV regime. Long term multi-waveband light curves of this object showed a flaring activity in 2014 with two distinct flares. Work presented here includes the study of flux-index variation, flare fitting, hardness ratio and spectral modelling of both X-ray and $γ-$ray data. The flux-index correlation we have found in MeV-GeV regime indicates a 'softer when …
We have used all 20 archival XMM-Newton observations of PKS 2155-304 with simultaneous X-ray and UV/optical data to study its long term flux and spectral variability. We find significant variations, in all bands, on time-scales of years with an rms amplitude of ~ 35-45 per cent, through the optical/UV variations are not correlated with those in the X-ray. We constructed SEDs that span more than three orders of magnitude in frequency and we first fitted them with a log-parabolic model; such models have been applied many times in the past for this, and other, blazars. These fits were poor, so we…

Variable gamma-ray emission has been discovered in five Radio-loud Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. This has clearly demonstrated that these NLSy1 galaxies do have relativistic jets similar to two other cases of gamma-ray emitting Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), namely blazars and radio galaxies. We present here our results on the multi-band analysis of two gamma-ray emitting NLSy1 galaxies namely PKS 1502+036 (z = 0.409) and PKS 2004-447 (z = 0.240) using archival data. We generate multi-band long term light cu…
PKS 0558-504 is a highly variable, X-ray bright, radio-loud, Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy with super-Eddington accretion rate and extended jets that do not dominate the emission beyond the radio band. Therefore, this source represents an ideal laboratory to shed some light on the central engine in highly accreting systems and specifically on the link between accretion disc and corona. Here we present the results from a 1.5 year monitoring with Swift XRT and UVOT. The simultaneous coverage at several wavelengths confirms that PKS 0558-504 is highly variable in any band from optical, to UV and X…
We study the long-term behavior of the bright gamma-ray blazar PKS 0402-362. We collected approximately 13 years of Fermi-LAT data between Aug 2008 to Jan 2021 and identified three bright $γ$-ray activity epochs. The second was found to be the brightest epoch ever seen in this source. We observed most of the $γ$-ray flare peaks to be asymmetric in profile suggesting a slow cooling time of particles or the varying Doppler factor as the main cause of these flares. The $γ$-ray spectrum is fitted with PL and LP spectral models, and in both cases, the spectral index is very steep. The $γ$-ray spect…
We report the first hard X-ray observations with NuSTAR of the BL Lac type blazar PKS 2155-304, augmented with soft X-ray data from XMM-Newton and gamma-ray data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope, obtained in April 2013 when the source was in a very low flux state. A joint NuSTAR and XMM spectrum, covering the energy range 0.5 - 60 keV, is best described by a model consisting of a log-parabola component with curvature beta = 0.3(+0.2,-0.1) and a (local) photon index 3.04 +/- 0.15 at photon energy of 2 keV, and a hard power-law tail with photon index 2.2 +/- 0.4. The hard X-ray tail can be sm…
We report the $γ$-ray detection of a young radio galaxy, PKS 1718$-$649, belonging to the class of Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs), with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the {\it Fermi} satellite. The third {\it Fermi} Gamma-ray LAT catalog (3FGL) includes an unassociated $γ$-ray source, 3FGL J1728.0$-$6446, located close to PKS 1718$-$649. Using the latest Pass 8 calibration, we confirm that the best fit $1 σ$ position of the $γ$-ray source is compatible with the radio location of PKS 1718$-$649. Cross-matching of the $γ$-ray source position with the positions of blazar sources from s…
We present preliminary results of the X-ray analysis of XMM-Newton and Swift observations as part of a multi-wavelength monitoring campaign in 2012 of the radio-loud narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy PKS 2004-447. The source was recently detected in gamma-rays by Fermi/LAT among only four other galaxies of that type. The 0.5-10 keV X-ray spectrum is well-described by a simple absorbed powerlaw (photon index ~ 1.6). The source brightness exhibits variability on timescales of months to years with indications for spectral variability, which follows a 'bluer-when-brighter' behaviour, similar to blazars…
PKS 1510-089 (z=0.361) is one of only a handful of flat spectrum radio quasars that have been detected at very high energy (VHE, $E>100\,$GeV) gamma rays. It is a very active source across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. VHE observations in May 2016 with H.E.S.S. and MAGIC revealed an exceptionally strong flare, which lasted for less than two nights, and exhibited a peak flux of about 0.8 times the flux of the Crab Nebula above $200\,$GeV. The flare provides the first evidence of intranight variability at VHE in this source. While optical observations with ATOM reveal a counterpart at opt…
PKS 2155-304 is a well studied BL Lac object in the southern sky. The historical optical data during different period have been collected and compiled. Light curves with a time span of 35 years have been constructed. The R-band light curve has been analyzed by means of three methods: epoch folding method, Jurkevich method and discrete correlation function (DCF) method. It is derived that there is an evident periodic component of 317 days (i.e. 0.87 yr) superposed on a long-term trend with large-amplitude variation in the light curve. The variability of this source is accompanied by a slight co…
The origin of the multiwavelength emission from PKS 0502+049 neighboring the first cosmic neutrino source TXS 0506+056 is studied using the data observed by Fermi-LAT and Swift UVOT/XRT. This source was in a flaring state in the considered bands before and after the neutrino observations in 2014-2015, characterized by hard emission spectra in the X-ray and $γ$-ray bands, $1.5-1.8$ and $\leq2.0$, respectively. During the neutrino observations, the $γ$-ray spectrum shows a deviation from a simple power-law shape, indicating a spectral cutoff at $E_c =8.50\pm2.06$ GeV. The spectral energy distrib…
The active galaxy PKS 0208-512, detected at lower energies by COMPTEL, has been claimed to be a MeV blazar from EGRET. We report on the most recent INTEGRAL observations of the blazar PKS 0208-512, which are supplemented by Swift ToO observations. The high energy X-ray and gamma-ray emission of PKS 0208-512 during August - December 2008 has been studied using 682 ks of INTEGRAL guest observer time and ~ 56 ks of Swift/XRT observations. These data were collected during the decay of a gamma-ray flare observed by Fermi/LAT. At X-ray energies (0.2 - 10 keV) PKS 0208-512 is significantly detected b…
We report the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) detection of two very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-ray photons from the directional vicinity of the distant (redshift, z = 1.1) blazar PKS 0426-380. The null hypothesis that both the 134 and 122 GeV photons originate from unrelated sources can be rejected at the 5.5 sigma confidence level. We therefore claim that at least one of the two VHE photons is securely associated with the blazar, making PKS 0426-380 the most distant VHE emitter known to date. The results are in agreement with the most recent Fermi-LAT constraints on the Extragalactic…
In this paper we present a fully selfconsistent SSC model with particle acceleration due to shock and stochastic acceleration (Fermi-I and Fermi-II-Processes respectively) to model the quiescent spectral energy distribution (SED) observed from PKS 2155. The simultaneous August/September 2008 multiwavelength data of H.E.S.S., Fermi, RXTE, SWIFT and ATOM give new constraints to the high-energy peak in the SED concerning its curvature. We find that, in our model, a monoenergetic injection of electrons at $γ_0 = 910$ into the model region, which are accelerated by Fermi-I- and Fermi-II-processes w…
We investigate the gamma-ray and X-ray properties of the flat spectrum radio quasar PKS 2149-306 at redshift z = 2.345. A strong gamma-ray flare from this source was detected by the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope satellite in 2013 January, reaching on January 20 a daily peak flux of (301$\pm$36)$\times$10$^{-8}$ ph/cm$^2$/s in the 0.1-100 GeV energy range. This flux corresponds to an apparent isotropic luminosity of (1.5$\pm$0.2)$\times$10$^{50}$ erg/s, comparable to the highest values observed by a blazar so far. During the flare the increase of flux was acc…
We investigate the dichotomy between jetted and non-jetted Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), focusing on the fundamental differences of these two classes in the accretion physics onto the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). Our aim is to study and constrain the structure, kinematics and physical state of the nuclear environment in the Broad Line Radio Galaxy (BLRG) PKS 2251+11. The high X-ray luminosity and the relative proximity make such AGN an ideal candidate for a detailed analysis of the accretion regions in radio galaxies. We performed a spectral and timing analysis of a $\sim$64 ks obs…
Our goal is to limit the redshifts of three blazars PG 1553+113, 3C 66A and PKS 1424+240, through the investigation of their Fermi and VHE (very high energy) $γ$-ray observations. We assume that the intrinsic spectra of PG 1553+113, 3C 66A, and PKS 1424+240 have not any cutoff across the Fermi and VHE $γ$-ray energy ranges. The intrinsic spectra of VHE $γ$-rays are obtained through the extrapolation of Fermi spectra. Comparing the measured and intrinsic VHE spectra due to extragalactic background light (EBL) absorption, we give the redshift upper limits of three blazars assuming a specific EBL…
We report on a detailed investigation of the $γ$-ray emission from 26 non-blazar AGNs based on the Fermi LAT data accumulated for 7 years. The photon index of non-blazar AGNs changes in the range of 1.84-2.86 and the flux varies from a few times $10^{-9} photon\: cm^{-2} s^{-1}$ to $10^{-7} photon\: cm^{-2}s^{-1}$. Over long time periods, power-law provides an adequate description of the $γ$-ray spectra of almost all sources. Significant curvature is observed in the $γ$-ray spectra of NGC 1275, NGC 6251, SBS 0846+513 and PMN J0948+0022 and their spectra are better described by log-parabola or …
The origin of the multi-band activities (outbursts/flares) of blazars is still a heavily debated topic. Shock and magnetic reconnection have long been considered as possible triggers for the multi-band activities. In this paper, we present an exploration of the origin of multi-band activities for a high-redshift (z =1.8385) FSRQ PKS 1502+106. Utilizing multi-band data from radio to $γ$-ray and optical polarization observations, we investigate two dramatic activities in detail: a $γ$-ray dominated outburst in 2015 and an optical dominated outburst in 2017. Our main results are as follows. (I) A…
We present a systematic characterization of multi-wavelength emission from blazar PKS 1510-089 using well-sampled data at infrared(IR)-optical, X-ray and $γ$-ray energies. The resulting flux distributions, except at X-rays, show two distinct lognormal profiles corresponding to a high and a low flux level. The dispersions exhibit energy dependent behavior except for the LAT $γ$-ray and optical B-band. During the low level flux states, it is higher towards the peak of the spectral energy distribution, with $γ$-ray being intrinsically more variable followed by IR and then optical, consistent with…
The detection of gamma-ray emission from narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLSy1) has challenged the idea that large black hole (BH) masses ($\ge$10$^8$ M$_{\odot}$) are needed to launch relativistic jets. We present near-infrared imaging data of the gamma-ray-emitting NLSy1 PKS 1502+036 obtained with the Very Large Telescope. Its surface brightness profile, extending to $\sim$ 20 kpc, is well described by the combination of a nuclear component and a bulge with a Sersic index $n$ = 3.5, which is indicative of an elliptical galaxy. A circumnuclear structure observed near PKS 1502+036 may be the r…
We present detailed analysis of the gamma-ray flux variability and spectral properties of the five radio-loud narrow line Seyfert 1 (RL-NLSy1) galaxies, detected by the Large Area Telescope onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, namely 1H 0323+342, SBS 0846+513, PMN J0948+0022, PKS 1502+036, and PKS 2004$-$447. The first three sources show significant flux variations including the rapid variability of a few hours by 1H 0323+342. The average gamma-ray spectrum of 1H 0323+342 and PMN J0948+0022 shows deviation from a simple power law (PL) behavior, whereas for other three sources, PL model…
We report on multifrequency observations of the gamma-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy PKS 1502+036 performed from radio to gamma-rays during 2008 August-2012 November by Fermi-LAT, Swift (XRT and UVOT), OVRO, VLBA, and VLA. No significant variability has been observed in gamma-rays, with 0.1-100 GeV flux that ranged between (3-7)x10^-8 ph/cm^2/s using 3-month time bins. The photon index of the LAT spectrum (Gamma=2.60+/-0.06) and the apparent isotropic gamma-ray luminosity, L(0.1-100 GeV)= 7.8x10^45 erg/s, over 51 months are typical of a flat spectrum radio quasar. The radio spectral…
The X-ray spectrum of extreme HBL type blazars is located in the synchrotron branch of the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED), at energies below the peak. A joint fit of the extrapolated X-ray spectra together with a host galaxy template allows characterizing the synchrotron branch in the SED. The X-ray spectrum is usually characterized either with a pure or a curved power-law model. In the latter case, however, it is hard to distinguish an intrinsic curvature from excess absorption. In this paper, we focus on five well-observed blazars: 1ES 0229+200, PKS 0548-322, RX J1136+6737, 1ES…
The extragalactic $γ$-ray sky is dominated by blazars and their study plays an important role in understanding jet physics, cosmic evolution history and origin of ultra high energy cosmic rays. In this work, we study a large sample of BL Lac objects to investigate why some sources are detected in $γ$-rays, while others not. We selected 170 BL Lac objects, with measured synchrotron spectral curvature and Doppler factor, and divided them into Fermi-LAT detected (FBLs) and non-detected (NFBLs) sources. We show that FBLs have smaller curvature than NFBLs, even after getting rid of Doppler beaming …
We have analyzed XMM-Newton observations of the high energy peaked blazar, PKS 2155-304, made on 24 May 2002 in the 0.3 - 10 keV X-ray band. These observations display a mini-flare, a nearly constant flux period and a strong flux increase. We performed a time-resolved spectral study of the data, by dividing the data into eight segments. We fitted the data with a power-law and a broken power-law model, and in some of the segments we found a noticeable spectral flattening of the source's spectrum below 10 keV. We also performed time-resolved cross-correlation analyses and detected significant ha…
We present the results of observations of blazar PKS 1510-089 with the Herschel Space Observatory PACS and SPIRE instruments, together with multiwavelength data from Fermi/LAT, Swift, SMARTS and SMA. The source was found in a quiet state, and its far-infrared spectrum is consistent with a power-law with a spectral index of alpha ~ 0.7. Our Herschel observations were preceded by two 'orphan' gamma-ray flares. The near-infrared data reveal the high-energy cut-off in the main synchrotron component, which cannot be associated with the main gamma-ray component in a one-zone leptonic model. This is …
On 2019 October 25, the Fermi-Large Area Telescope observed the first gamma-ray flare from the radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy 1) galaxy PKS 2004$-$447 ($z=0.24$). We report on follow-up observations in the radio, optical-UV, and X-ray bands that were performed by ATCA, the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR, respectively, and our multi-wavelength analysis. We study the variability across all energy bands and additionally produce $γ$-ray light curves with different time binnings to study the variability on short timescales during the flare. We examine the X-ray spect…
The high redhsift blazars powered by supermassive black holes with masses exceeding $10^9\:M_\odot$ have the highest jet power and luminosity and are important probes to test the physics of relativistic jets at the early epochs of the Universe. We present a multi-frequency spectral and temporal study of high redshift blazar PKS 0537-286 by analyzing data from Fermi-LAT, NuSTAR Swift XRT and UVOT. Although the time averaged $γ$-ray spectrum of the source is relatively soft (indicating the high-energy emission peak is below the GeV range), several prominent flares were observed when the spectrum…
We report on the multi-wavelength observations of PKS 1510-089 (a flat spectrum radio quasar at z=0.361) during its high activity period between 2008 September and 2009 June. During this 11 months period, the source was characterized by a complex variability at optical, UV and gamma-ray bands, on time scales down to 6-12 hours. The brightest gamma-ray isotropic luminosity, recorded on 2009 March 26, was ~ 2x10^48erg s^-1. The spectrum in the Fermi-LAT energy range shows a mild curvature well described by a log-parabolic law, and can be understood as due to the Klein-Nishina effect. The gamma-r…

We report on the variation in the optical polarization of the blazar PKS 1749+096 observed in 2008--2015. The degree of polarization (PD) tends to increase in short flares having a time-scale of a few days. The object favors a polarization angle (PA) of $40^\circ$--$50^\circ$ at the flare maxima, which is close to the position angle of the jet ($20^\circ$--$40^\circ$). Three clear polarization rotations were detected in the negative PA direction associated with flares. In addition, a rapid and large decrease in the PA was observed in the other two flares, while another two flares showed no lar…
Observations of very high energy gamma-rays from blazars provide information about acceleration mechanisms occurring in their innermost regions. Studies of variability in these objects allow a better understanding of the mechanisms at play. To investigate the spectral and temporal variability of VHE (>100 GeV) gamma-rays of the well-known high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 with the H.E.S.S. imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes over a wide range of flux states. Data collected from 2005 to 2007 are analyzed. Spectra are derived on time scales ranging from 3 years to 4 minutes. …
The $γ$-ray flare of PKS 1222+216, observed in June 2010, is interpreted as an outcome of jet dynamics at recollimation zone. We obtained the $γ$-ray light-curves in three different energy bands, namely, 100--300 MeV, 300 MeV--1 GeV and 1--3 GeV from observations by the \emph{Fermi} Large Area Telescope (LAT). We also use the \emph{Swift}--XRT flux from 0.3--10 keV obtained from archival data. We supplement these with the 0.07--0.4 TeV observations with MAGIC telescope, available in the literature. The detection of source at very high energy (VHE, $E>100$ GeV) with a differential photon spectr…
Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) PKS 1222+21 (4C 21.35, z=0.432) was detected with the MAGIC Cherenkov telescopes during a short observation (~0.5 hr) performed on 2010 June 17. The MAGIC detection coincides with high energy MeV/GeV gamma-ray activity measured by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi satellite. The VHE spectrum measured by MAGIC extends from about 70 GeV up to at least 400 GeV and can be well described by a power law dN/dE \propto E^-Gamma with a photon index Gamma= 3.75+/-0.27stat +/-0.2syst. The averaged integra…
We present the first LOFAR observations of the radio jet in the quasar 4C+19.44 (a.k.a. PKS 1354+19) obtained with the long baselines. The achieved resolution is very well matched to that of archival Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) observations at higher radio frequencies as well as the archival X-ray images obtained with {\it Chandra}. We found that, for several knots along the jet, the radio flux densities measured at hundreds of MHz lie well below the values estimated by extrapolating the GHz spectra. This clearly indicates the presence of spectral curvature. Radio spectral curvature has bee…
We report on multiwavelength observations of the blazar PKS 0537-441 (z = 0.896) obtained from microwaves through gamma rays by SMA, REM, ATOM, Swift and Fermi during 2008 August-2010 April. Strong variability has been observed in gamma rays, with two major flaring episodes (2009 July and 2010 March) and a harder-when-brighter behaviour, quite common for FSRQs and low-synchrotron-peaked BL Lacs, in 2010 March. In the same way the SED of the source cannot be modelled by a simple synchrotron self-Compton model, as opposed to many BL Lacs, but the addition of an external Compton component of seed…
The addition of a 28 m Cherenkov telescope (CT5) to the H.E.S.S. array extended the experiment's sensitivity to lower energies. The lowest energy threshold is obtained using monoscopic analysis of data taken with CT5, providing access to gamma-ray energies below 100 GeV. Such an extension of the instrument's energy range is particularly beneficial for studies of Active Galactic Nuclei with soft spectra, as expected for those at a redshift > 0.5. The high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects PKS 2155-304 (z = 0.116) and PG 1553+113 (0.43 < z < 0.58) are among the brightest objects in the gamma-ray s…
