Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs) are among the most energetic and powerful active galactic nuclei, often exhibiting jet powers comparable to or exceeding the Eddington luminosity. In this work, we performed broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling of two FSRQs PKS 1441+25 and Ton 599, using Swift-XRT/UVOT, NuSTAR, Fermi-LAT and VERITAS observations during 2015 and 2021, respectively. We considered four particle distribution models: a broken power law, a log-parabola, and two energy-dependent models in which either the diffusion or acceleration timescale depends on energy. Our results show that the jet power estimates derived from models with intrinsic curvature, such as the log-parabola and energy-dependent models, are of the same order as those obtained with a broken power-law distribution. This contrasts with the case of High Synchrotron Peaked Blazars (HBLs), where the power estimates can differ by nearly two orders of magnitude between models. We attribute this difference to the lower electron break energies typically observed in FSRQs. Consequently, our findings suggest that, unlike in HBLs, the estimated jet powers in FSRQs are relatively insensitive to the assumed particle energy distribution, reflecting the dominance of external Compton processes and weaker dependence on spectral curvature.
In this work, we have searched quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the 15 GHz light curve of the FSRQ PKS J0805-0111 monitored by the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) 40 m telescope during the period from January 9,2008 to May 9,2019, using the weighted wavelet Z-transform (WWZ) and the Lomb-Scargle Periodogram (LSP) techniques. This is the first time to search for periodic radio signal in the FSRQ PKS J0805-0111 by these two methods. All two methods consistently reveal a repeating signal with a periodicity of 3.38$\pm$ 0.8 years ($>$99.7\% confidence level). In order to determining the…
With the installation of a new 28-m diameter imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope in the middle of the array, the H.E.S.S. instrument has entered since 2012 into its Phase II. The fifth large-size telescope is particularly important to lower the threshold energy of the array, and is thus a unique instrument to observe low-frequency-peaked blazars, such as flat-spectrum radio-quasars (FSRQs), which remain rare in the very-high- energy (VHE; E $>$ 100 GeV) $γ$-ray domain. In this contribution, we report on the discovery with the H.E.S.S. telescopes of VHE $γ$-ray emission from the FSRQ PKS 07…
The flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) PKS 1510-089 (z=0.361) is known for its complex multiwavelength behavior. It has been monitored regularly at very high energy (VHE, $E>100\,$GeV) gamma-rays with H.E.S.S. since its discovery in 2009 in order to study the unknown behavior of FSRQs in quiescence at VHE, as well as the flux evolution around flaring events. Given the expected strong cooling of electrons and the absorption of VHE emission within the broad-line region, a detection of PKS 1510-089 at VHE in a quiescent state would be an important result, implying an acceleration and emission regi…
Among more than fifty blazars detected in very high energy (VHE, E>100GeV) gamma-rays, only three belong to the subclass of Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs): PKS 1510-089, PKS 1222+216 and 3C 279. The detection of FSRQs in the VHE range is challenging, mainly because of their steep soft spectra in the GeV-TeV regime. MAGIC has observed and detected all FSRQs known to be VHE emitters up to now and found that they exhibit very different behavior. The 2010 discovery of PKS 1222+216 (z = 0.432) with the fast variability observed, challenges simple one-zone emission models and more complicated s…
Flat-spectrum radio quasar PKS~1229$-$02 with a knotty and asymmetric radio morphology was identified as the optical and radio counterpart of a $γ$-ray source. In this paper, we study the properties, e.g. morphology, opacity, polarization and kinematics of the jet in PKS~1229$-$02 using radio interferometry. With our results, we find that the knotty and asymmetric morphology of this source may probably shaped by the interaction between its anterograde jet and the nonuniform dense ambient medium. By reproducing a Spectral Energy Distribution of PKS~1229$-$02 with the obtained kinematic paramete…
The blazar PKS 1510-089 was the first of the flat spectrum radio quasar type, which had been detected simultaneously by a ground based Cherenkov telescope (H.E.S.S.) and the LAT instrument on board the Fermi satellite. Given the strong broad line region emission defining this blazar class, and the resulting high optical depth for VHE ($E>100\,$GeV) $γ$-rays, it was surprising to detect VHE emission from such an object. In May 2015, PKS 1510-089 exhibited high states throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. Target of Opportunity observations with the H.E.S.S. experiment revealed strong and unpr…
In this paper, we characterize the first $γ$-ray flaring episode of the FSRQ PKS 0346-27 (z=0.991), as revealed by Fermi-LAT monitoring data, and the concurrent multi-wavelength variability observed from radio through X-rays. The quasi-simultaneous multi-wavelength coverage allowed us to construct time-resolved spectral energy distributions (SEDs). PKS 0346-27 entered an elevated $γ$-ray activity state starting from the beginning of 2018. The high-state continued throughout the year, displaying the highest fluxes in May 2018. We find evidence of short-time scale variability down to $\sim$1.5 h…
Variable gamma-ray emission has been discovered in five Radio-loud Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. This has clearly demonstrated that these NLSy1 galaxies do have relativistic jets similar to two other cases of gamma-ray emitting Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), namely blazars and radio galaxies. We present here our results on the multi-band analysis of two gamma-ray emitting NLSy1 galaxies namely PKS 1502+036 (z = 0.409) and PKS 2004-447 (z = 0.240) using archival data. We generate multi-band long term light cu…
[abridged] We present results of modeling the SED and multiwavelength variability of the bright FSRQ PKS1510-089 with our time-dependent multizone Monte Carlo/Fokker-Planck code (Chen et al. 2001). As primary source of seed photons for inverse Compton scattering, we consider radiation from the broad line region (BLR), from the molecular torus, and the local synchrotron radiation (SSC). Different scenarios are assessed by comparing simulated light curves and SEDs with one of the best flares by PKS1510-089, in March 2009. The time-dependence of our code and its correct handling of light travel t…
The origin of the multi-band activities (outbursts/flares) of blazars is still a heavily debated topic. Shock and magnetic reconnection have long been considered as possible triggers for the multi-band activities. In this paper, we present an exploration of the origin of multi-band activities for a high-redshift (z =1.8385) FSRQ PKS 1502+106. Utilizing multi-band data from radio to $γ$-ray and optical polarization observations, we investigate two dramatic activities in detail: a $γ$-ray dominated outburst in 2015 and an optical dominated outburst in 2017. Our main results are as follows. (I) A…
The flat spectrum radio quasar PKS 1510-089 is a monitored target in many wavelength bands due to its high variability. It was detected as a very-high-energy (VHE) $γ$-ray emitter with H.E.S.S. in 2009, and has since been a regular target of VHE observations by the imaging Cherenkov observatories H.E.S.S. and MAGIC. In this paper, we summarize the current state of results focusing on the monitoring effort with H.E.S.S. and the discovery of a particularly strong VHE flare in 2016 with H.E.S.S. and MAGIC. While the source has now been established as a weak, but regular emitter at VHE, no correla…
We report multi-wavelength (IR-O, UV, X-ray, gamma-ray) data of the flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) PKS B1424-418 (z=1.52) gathered during an active phase in 2013 April . As for a few other cases of FSRQs reported in literature, the detection by the Large Area Telescope onboard Fermi of gamma rays with energy above 10 GeV indicates that the emission likely occurs beyond the highly opaque (tau ~10) broad line region. This conclusion is strengthened by a model fit to the spectral energy distribution, which allows us to locate the emission region even beyond the distance generally assumed for t…
We present a systematic characterization of multi-wavelength emission from blazar PKS 1510-089 using well-sampled data at infrared(IR)-optical, X-ray and $γ$-ray energies. The resulting flux distributions, except at X-rays, show two distinct lognormal profiles corresponding to a high and a low flux level. The dispersions exhibit energy dependent behavior except for the LAT $γ$-ray and optical B-band. During the low level flux states, it is higher towards the peak of the spectral energy distribution, with $γ$-ray being intrinsically more variable followed by IR and then optical, consistent with…
We search for $γ$-ray and optical periodic modulations in a distant flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) PKS 0426-380 (the redshift $z=1.1$). Using two techniques (i.e., the maximum likelihood optimization and the exposure-weighted aperture photometry), we obtain $γ$-ray light curves from \emph{Fermi}-LAT Pass 8 data covering from 2008 August to 2016 December. We then analyze the light curves with the Lomb-Scargle Periodogram (LSP) and the Weighted Wavelet Z-transform (WWZ). A $γ$-ray quasi-periodicity with a period of 3.35 $\pm$ 0.68 years is found at the significance-level of $\simeq3.6\ σ$. Th…
Flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) can suffer strong absorption above E = 25/(1+z) GeV, due to gamma-gamma interaction if the emitting region is at sub-parsec scale from the super-massive black hole (SMBH). Gamma-ray flares from these astrophysical sources can investigate the location of the high-energy emission region and the physics of the radiating processes. We present a remarkable gamma-ray flaring activity from FSRQ PKS 2023-07 during April 2016, as detected by both AGILE and Fermi satellites. An intensive multi-wavelength campaign, triggered by Swift, covered the entire duration of the…
Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQ) are the most powerful blazars in the gamma-ray band. Although they are supposed to be good candidates in producing high energy neutrinos, no secure detection of FSRQs has been obtained up to now, except for a possible case of PKS B1424-418. In this work, we compute the expected flux of high energy neutrinos from FSRQs using standard assumptions for the properties of the radiation fields filling the regions surrounding the central supermassive black hole. We obtain as a result that high energy neutrinos are naturally expected from FSRQs in the sub-EeV-EeV ener…
PKS 1424+240 is a distant very high energy gamma-ray BL Lac object with redshift $z=0.601$. It was found that pure synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) process normally need extreme input parameters (e.g., very low magnetic field intensity and extraordinarily large Doppler factor) to explain its multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs). To avoid the extreme model parameters, different models have been proposed (e.g., two-zone SSC model or lepto-hadronic model). In this work, we employ the traditional one-zone leptonic model after including a weak external Compton component to re-explore…
On July 30th, 2019 IceCube detected a high-energy astrophysical muon neutrino candidate, IC-190730A, with a $67\%$ probability of astrophysical origin. The flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) PKS 1502+106 is in the error circle of the neutrino. Motivated by this observation, we study PKS 1502+106 as a possible source of IC-190730A. PKS 1502+106 was in a quiet state in terms of UV/optical/X-ray/gamma-ray flux at the time of the neutrino alert, we therefore model the expected neutrino emission from the source during its average long-term state, and investigate whether the emission of IC-190730A as…
We present a multi-frequency study of PKS J1222$+$0413 (4C$+$04.42), currently the highest redshift $γ$-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 ($γ$-NLS1). We assemble a broad spectral energy distribution (SED) including previously unpublished datasets: X-ray data obtained with the NuSTAR and Neil Gehrels Swift observatories; near-infrared, optical and UV spectroscopy obtained with VLT X-shooter; and multiband radio data from the Effelsberg telescope. These new observations are supplemented by archival data from the literature. We apply physical models to the broadband SED, parameterising the accre…
The $γ$-ray loud narrow line Seyfert 1 ($γ$-NLSy1) galaxy PKS 1502+036 ($z=0.409$) exhibited its first $γ$-ray outburst on 2015 December 20. In the energy range of 0.1-300 GeV, the highest flux measured by {\it Fermi}-Large Area Telescope is (3.90 $\pm$ 1.52) $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, which is the highest $γ$-ray flux ever detected from this object. The associated spectral shape is soft ($Γ_{0.1-300~{\rm GeV}}=2.57\pm0.17$) and this corresponds to an isotropic $γ$-ray luminosity of (1.2 $\pm$ 0.6) $\times$ 10$^{48}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We generate the broadband spectral energy distri…
The flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) PKS 0208-512 underwent three outbursts at the optical-near-infrared (OIR) wavelengths during 2008-2011. The second OIR outburst did not have a gamma-ray counterpart despite being comparable in brightness and temporal extent to the other two. We model the time variable spectral energy distribution of PKS 0208-512 during those three flaring episodes with leptonic models to investigate the physical mechanism that can produce this anomalous flare. We show that the redder-when-brighter spectral trend in the OIR bands can be explained by the superposition of a f…

Blazars may accelerate protons and/or nuclei as well as electrons. The hadronic component of accelerated particles in blazars may constitute the bulk of their high-energy budget; nevertheless, this component is elusive due to a high value of the energy threshold of proton interaction with photon fields inside the source. However, broad line regions (BLRs) of some flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) may contain a sufficient amount of matter to render primary protons "visible" in $γ$ rays via hadronuclear interactions. In the present paper we study the persistent $γ$-ray emission of the FSRQ PKS…
Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) PKS 1222+21 (4C 21.35, z=0.432) was detected with the MAGIC Cherenkov telescopes during a short observation (~0.5 hr) performed on 2010 June 17. The MAGIC detection coincides with high energy MeV/GeV gamma-ray activity measured by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi satellite. The VHE spectrum measured by MAGIC extends from about 70 GeV up to at least 400 GeV and can be well described by a power law dN/dE \propto E^-Gamma with a photon index Gamma= 3.75+/-0.27stat +/-0.2syst. The averaged integra…
The blazar zone in quasars is commonly assumed to be located inside the broad-line region at some hundreds of Schwartzschild radii from the central black hole. Now, the simultaneous Fermi/LAT and MAGIC observations of a strong flare in the FSRQ PKS 1222+21 (4C 21.35, z=0.432) on 2010 June 17 challenge this picture. The spectrum can be described by a single power law with photon index 2.72+/-0.34 between 3 GeV and 400 GeV, and this is consistent with emission from a single component in the jet. The absence of a spectral cutoff constrains the gamma-ray emission region to lie outside of the broad…
Flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) are a particular class of blazars rich of optical/ultraviolet photons inside the broad line region (BLR), necessarily implying a huge optical depth for $γ$ rays above 20 GeV. As a consequence, photons with energy above such a threshold should not be emitted. However, photons in the energy range 70 - 400 GeV have been observed by MAGIC from the FSRQ PKS 1222+216. Several astrophysical explanations exist in the literature, but they are all ad hoc, namely devised only for that specific purpose. We show that such a surprising discovery can be explained within st…

We investigate the gamma-ray and X-ray properties of the flat spectrum radio quasar PKS 2149-306 at redshift z = 2.345. A strong gamma-ray flare from this source was detected by the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope satellite in 2013 January, reaching on January 20 a daily peak flux of (301$\pm$36)$\times$10$^{-8}$ ph/cm$^2$/s in the 0.1-100 GeV energy range. This flux corresponds to an apparent isotropic luminosity of (1.5$\pm$0.2)$\times$10$^{50}$ erg/s, comparable to the highest values observed by a blazar so far. During the flare the increase of flux was acc…
Flat-spectrum radio-quasars (FSRQs) are rarely detected at very-high-energies (VHE; E>100 GeV) due to their low-frequency-peaked SEDs. At present, only 6 FSRQs are known to emit VHE photons, representing only 7% of the VHE extragalactic catalog. Following the detection of MeV-GeV gamma-ray flaring activity from the FSRQ PKS 0736+017 (z=0.189) with Fermi, the H.E.S.S. array of Cherenkov telescopes triggered ToO observations on February 18, 2015, with the goal of studying the gamma-ray emission in the VHE band. H.E.S.S. ToO observations were carried out during the nights of February 18, 19, 21, …
On the kiloparsec scale, extragalactic radio jets show two distinct morphologies related to their power: collimated high-power jets ending in a bright termination shock and low-power jets opening up close to the core and showing a more diffuse surface brightness distribution. The emergence of this morphological dichotomy on the parsec scale at the innermost jet regions can be studied with very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) radio observations of blazars in which the jet emission is strongly Doppler boosted due to relativistic bulk motion at small angles between the jet direction and the l…
Flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) are the most luminous blazars at GeV energies, but only rarely emit detectable fluxes of TeV gamma rays, typically during bright GeV flares. We explore the gamma-ray variability and spectral characteristics of three FSRQs that have been observed at GeV and TeV energies by Fermi-LAT and VERITAS, making use of almost 100 hours of VERITAS observations spread over 10 years: 3C 279, PKS 1222+216, and Ton 599. We explain the GeV flux distributions of the sources in terms of a model derived from a stochastic differential equation describing fluctuations in the magn…
Among more than fifty blazars detected in very high energy (VHE, E>100GeV) gamma-rays, only three belong to the subclass of Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs). MAGIC observed FSRQ PKS 1510-089 in February-April 2012 during a high activity state in the high energy (HE, E>100 MeV) gamma-ray band observed by AGILE and Fermi. MAGIC observations result in the detection of a source with significance of 6.0 sigma. In agreement with the previous VHE observations of the source, we find no statistically significant variability during the MAGIC observations in daily, weekly or monthly time scales. The o…
We present the results of the Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) light curve (LC) modelling of selected blazars: six flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and five BL Lacertae (BL Lacs). All objects have densely sampled and long-term LCs, over 10 years. For each blazar we generated three LCs with 7, 10, and 14 days binning, using the latest LAT 8-year source catalog and binned analysis provided within the fermipy package. The LCs were modelled with several tools: the Fourier transform, the Lomb-Scargle periodogram (LSP), the autoregressive moving average (ARMA), the fractional autoregressive integ…
We report on multiwavelength observations of the blazar PKS 0537-441 (z = 0.896) obtained from microwaves through gamma rays by SMA, REM, ATOM, Swift and Fermi during 2008 August-2010 April. Strong variability has been observed in gamma rays, with two major flaring episodes (2009 July and 2010 March) and a harder-when-brighter behaviour, quite common for FSRQs and low-synchrotron-peaked BL Lacs, in 2010 March. In the same way the SED of the source cannot be modelled by a simple synchrotron self-Compton model, as opposed to many BL Lacs, but the addition of an external Compton component of seed…
Blazars host the most powerful persistent relativistic conical jet -- a highly collimated anisotropic flow of material/plasma. Motivated by this, we explore the blazar's broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) in an anisotropic flow of plasma which emits via synchrotron and inverse Compton (IC) mechanism. The flow is conical with two velocity components: a highly relativistic flow component along the jet axis and a random perpendicular component with average random Lorentz factor $\langle γ^{ran} \rangle$ $<<$ than the average component along the jet axis $\langle γ\rangle$. Assuming a br…
In this paper we develop the jet model of Potter & Cotter (2012) to include a magnetically dominated accelerating parabolic base transitioning to a slowly decelerating conical jet with a geometry set by recent radio observations of M87. We conserve relativistic energy-momentum and particle number along the jet and calculate the observed synchrotron emission from the jet by calculating the integrated line of sight synchrotron opacity through the jet in the rest frame of each section of plasma. We calculate the inverse-Compton emission from synchrotron, CMB, accretion disc, starlight, broad line…
We present the results of the \textit{Fermi}-LAT 10-years-long light curves (LCs) modeling of selected blazars: six flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and five BL Lacertae (BL Lacs), examined in 7-, 10-, and 14-day binning. The LCs and power spectral densities (PSDs) were investigated with various methods: Fourier transform, Lomb-Scargle periodogram (LSP), wavelet scalogram, autoregressive moving average (ARMA) process, continuous-time ARMA (CARMA), Hurst exponent ($H$), and the $\mathcal{A}-\mathcal{T}$ plane. First, with extensive simulations we showed that parametric modeling returns unrel…
The flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) PKS 1510-089 is known for its complex multiwavelength behavior, and is one of only a few FSRQs detected at very high energy (VHE, $E>100\,$GeV) $γ$-rays. VHE $γ$-ray observations with H.E.S.S. and MAGIC during late May and early June 2016 resulted in the detection of an unprecedented flare, which reveals for the first time VHE $γ$-ray intranight variability in this source. While a common variability timescale of $1.5\,$hr is found, there is a significant deviation near the end of the flare with a timescale of $\sim 20\,$min marking the cessation of the eve…
