Stacking two graphene layers twisted by the 'magic angle' $θ\approx 1.1^\circ$ generates flat energy bands, which in turn catalyzes various strongly correlated phenomena depending on filling and sample details. At charge neutrality, transport measurements reveal superficially mundane semimetallicity (as expected when correlations are weak) in some samples yet robust insulation in others. We propose that the interplay between interactions and disorder admits either behavior, even when the system is strongly correlated and locally gapped. Specifically, we argue that strong interactions supplemented by weak, smooth disorder stabilize a network of gapped quantum valley Hall domains with spatially varying Chern numbers determined by the disorder landscape--even when an entirely different order is favored in the clean limit. Within this scenario, sufficiently small samples that realize a single domain display insulating transport characteristics. Conversely, multi-domain samples exhibit re-emergent massless Dirac fermions formed by gapless domain-wall modes, yielding semimetallic behavior except on the ultra-long scales at which localization becomes visible. We discuss experimental tests of this proposal via local probes and transport. Our results highlight the crucial role that randomness can play in ground-state selection of twisted heterostructures, an observation that we expect to have further ramifications at other fillings.
Utilizing the Baym-Kadanoff formalism with the polarization function calculated in the random phase approximation, the dynamics of the $ν=0$ quantum Hall state in bilayer graphene is analyzed. Two phases with nonzero energy gap, the ferromagnetic and layer asymmetric ones, are found. The phase diagram in the plane $(\tildeΔ_0,B)$, where $\tildeΔ_0$ is a top-bottom gates voltage imbalance, is described. It is shown that the energy gap scales linearly, $ΔE\sim 14 B[T]K, with magnetic field.
Using the semiclassical quantum Boltzmann equation (QBE), we numerically calculate the DC transport properties of bilayer graphene near charge neutrality. We find, in contrast to prior discussions, that phonon scattering is crucial even at temperatures below 40K. Nonetheless, electron-electron scattering still dominates over phonon collisions allowing a hydrodynamic approach. We introduce a simple two-fluid hydrodynamic model of electrons and holes interacting via Coulomb drag and compare our results to the full QBE calculation. We show that the two-fluid model produces quantitatively accurate…
We report on a fully self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculation of interaction effects on the Moiré flat bands of twisted bilayer graphene, assuming that valley U(1) symmetry is respected. We use realistic band structures and interactions and focus on the charge neutrality point, where experiments have variously reported either insulating or semimetallic behavior. Restricting the search to orders for which the valley U(1) symmetry remains unbroken, we find three types of self-consistent solutions with competitive ground state energy (i) insulators that break $C_2 {\mathcal T}$ symmetry, includin…
We investigate twisted bilayer graphene near charge neutrality using a generalized Bistritzer-MacDonald continuum model, accounting for corrugation effects. The Fermi velocity vanishes for particular twist angles properly reproducing the physics of the celebrated magic angles. Using group representation theory, we identify all contact interaction potentials compatible with the symmetries of the model. This enables us to identify two classes of quartic interactions leading to either the opening of a gap or to nematic ordering. We then implement a renormalization group analysis to study the comp…
Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) provides a unique framework to elucidate the interplay between strong correlations and topological phenomena in two-dimensional systems. The existence of multiple electronic degrees of freedom -- charge, spin, and valley -- gives rise to a plethora of possible ordered states and instabilities. Identifying which of them are realized in the regime of strong correlations is fundamental to shed light on the nature of the superconducting and correlated insulating states observed in the TBG experiments. Here, we use unbiased, sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo simul…
We discuss twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) based on a theorem of flat band ferromagnetism put forward by Mielke and Tasaki. According to this theorem, ferromagnetism occurs if the single particle density matrix of the flat band states is irreducible and we argue that this result can be applied to the quasi-flat bands of TBG that emerge around the charge-neutrality point for twist angles around the magic angle $θ\sim1.05^\circ$. We show that the density matrix is irreducible in this case, thus predicting a ferromagnetic ground state for neutral TBG ($n=0$). We then show that the theorem can also…
Triple point fermions are elusive electronic excitations that generalize Dirac and Weyl modes beyond the conventional high energy paradigm. Yet, finding real materials naturally hosting these excitations at the Fermi energy has remained challenging. Here we show that twisted bilayer graphene is a versatile platform to realize robust triple point fermions in two dimensions. In particular, we establish that the introduction of localized impurities lifts one of the two degenerate Dirac cones, yielding triple point fermions at charge neutrality. Furthermore, we show that the valley polarization is…
We present a framework for understanding the recently observed cascade transitions and the Landau level degeneracies at every integer filling of twisted bilayer graphene. The Coulomb interaction projected onto narrow bands causes the charged excitations at an integer filling to disperse, forming new bands. If the excitation moves the filling away from the charge neutrality point, then it has a band minimum at the moire Brillouin zone center with a small mass that compares well with the experiment; if towards the charge neutrality point, then it has a much larger mass and a higher degeneracy. A…
The emergence of controlled, two-dimensional moiré materials has uncovered a new platform for investigating topological physics. Twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) has been predicted to host a topologically non-trivial gapped phase with Chern number equal to two at charge neutrality, when half the flat bands are filled. However, it can be difficult to diagnose topological states using a single measurement because it is ideal to probe the bulk and edge properties at the same time. Here, we report a combination of chemical potential measurements, transport measurements, and theoretical calcu…
The nature of the insulating and superconducting states in twisted bilayer graphene systems is intensely debated. While many works seek for explanations in the few flat bands near the Fermi level, theory and a number of experiments suggest that nontwisted bilayer graphene systems do exhibit - or are at least close to - an ordered, insulating ground state related to antiferromagnetic ordering. Here we investigate in which ways this magnetic ordering scenario is affected by the slight twisting between the layers. We find that at charge neutrality the ordering tendencies of twisted systems interp…
Flat electronic bands can accommodate a plethora of interaction driven quantum phases, since kinetic energy is quenched therein and electronic interactions therefore prevail. Twisted bilayer graphene, near so-called the "magic angles", features \emph{slow} Dirac fermions close to the charge-neutrality point that persist up to high-energies. Starting from a continuum model of slow, but strongly interacting Dirac fermions, we show that with increasing chemical doping away from the charge-neutrality point, a time-reversal symmetry breaking, valley pseudo-spin-triplet, topological $p+ip$ supercond…
Graphene, a single sheet of graphite with honeycomb lattice structure, has massless carriers with tunable density and polarity. We investigate the ground state phase diagram of two graphene sheets (embedded in a dielectric) separated by distance $d$ where the top layer has electrons and the bottom layer has holes, using mean-field theory. We find that a uniform excitonic condensate occurs over a large range of carrier densities and is weakly dependent on the relative orientation of the two sheets. We obtain the excitonic gap, quasiparticle energy and the density of states. We show that both, t…
Twisted Bilayer graphene (TBG) is known to feature isolated and relatively flat bands near charge neutrality, when tuned to special magic angles. However, different criteria for the magic angle such as the vanishing of Dirac speed, minimal bandwidth or maximal band gap to higher bands typically give different results. Here we study a modified continuum model for TBG which has an infinite sequence of magic angles $θ$ at which, we simultaneously find that (i) the Dirac speed vanishes (ii) absolutely flat bands appear at neutrality and (iii) bandgaps to the excited bands are maximized. When param…
The quantum Hall effect near the charge neutrality point in bilayer graphene is investigated in high magnetic fields of up to 35 T using electronic transport measurements. In the high field regime, the eight-fold degeneracy in the zero energy Landau level is completely lifted, exhibiting new quantum Hall states corresponding filling factors $ν=$0, 1, 2, & 3. Measurements of the activation energy gap in tilted magnetic fields suggest that the Landau level splitting at the newly formed $ν=$1, 2, & 3 filling factors are independent of spin, consistent with the formation of a quantum Hall ferromag…
An extended Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice with two orbitals per site at charge neutrality is investigated with unbiased large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The Fermi velocity of the Dirac fermions is renormalized as the cluster charge interaction increases, until a mass term emerges and a quantum phase transition from Dirac semi-metal to valence bond solid (VBS) insulator is established. The quantum critical point is discovered to belong to 3D $N=4$ Gross-Neveu chiral XY universality with the critical exponents obtained at high precision. Further enhancement of the interaction …
We use self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations performed in the full $π$-band Hilbert space to assess the nature of the recently discovered correlated insulator states in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). We find that gaps between the flat conduction and valence bands open at neutrality over a wide range of twist angles, sometimes without breaking the system's valley projected ${\cal C}_{2}{\cal T}$ symmetry. Broken spin/valley flavor symmetries then enable gapped states to form not only at neutrality, but also at total moiré band filling $n = \pm p/4$ with integer $p = 1, 2, 3$, w…
The recent discovery of superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene has sparked a renewed interest in the strongly-correlated physics of $sp^2$ carbons, in stark contrast to preliminary investigations which were dominated by the one-body physics of the massless Dirac fermions. We thus provide a self-contained, theoretical perspective of the journey of graphene from its single-particle physics-dominated regime to the strongly-correlated physics of the flat bands. Beginning from the origin of the Dirac points in condensed matter systems, we discuss the effect of the superlattice on…
Bilayer graphene (BLG) at the charge neutrality point (CNP) is strongly susceptible to electronic interactions, and expected to undergo a phase transition into a state with spontaneous broken symmetries. By systematically investigating a large number of singly- and doubly-gated bilayer graphene (BLG) devices, we show that an insulating state appears only in devices with high mobility and low extrinsic doping. This insulating state has an associated transition temperature Tc~5K and an energy gap of ~3 meV, thus strongly suggesting a gapped broken symmetry state that is destroyed by very weak di…
Current experiments on different samples of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) have found different sets of insulating phases. Despite this diversity, many features of these insulating phases appear to be universal. They include the dispersion of Landau fans away from charge neutrality, a reduced Landau fan degeneracy from the expected value at charge neutrality, and the further reduction of this degeneracy when crossing an insulating phase with odd number of electrons in the superlattice unit cell. We point out that all these behaviors as well as the ferromagnetic behavior observed in some of the…
The degeneracy of Landau levels flanking charge neutrality in twisted bilayer graphene is known to change from eight-fold to four-fold when the twist angle is reduced to values near the magic angle of $\approx 1.05^\circ$. This degeneracy lifting has been reproduced in experiments by multiple groups, and is known to occur even in devices which do not harbor the correlated insulators and superconductors. We propose $C_3$ symmetry breaking as an explanation of such robust degeneracy lifting, and support our proposal by numerical results on the Landau level spectrum in near-magic-angle twisted bi…
Twisted bilayer graphene with a twist angle of around 1.1° features a pair of isolated flat electronic bands and forms a strongly correlated electronic platform. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to probe local properties of highly tunable twisted bilayer graphene devices and show that the flat bands strongly deform when aligned with the Fermi level. At half filling of the bands, we observe the development of gaps originating from correlated insulating states. Near charge neutrality, we find a previously unidentified correlated regime featuring a substantially enhanced flat band split…
Using a Green's function approach, we study phonon-mediated superconducting pairing symmetries that may arise in bilayer graphene where the monolayers are displaced in-plane with respect to each other. We consider a generic coupling potential between the displaced graphene monolayers, which is applicable to both shifted and commensurate twisted graphene layers; study intralayer and interlayer phonon-mediated BCS pairings; and investigate AA and AB(AC) stacking orders. Our findings demonstrate that at the charge neutrality point, the dominant pairings in both AA and AB stackings with intralayer…
We map out the possible ordered states in bilayer graphene at the neutrality point by extending the previous renormalization group treatment of many-body instabilities to finite temperature, trigonal warping and externally applied perpendicular electric field. We were able to analytically determine all outcomes of the RG flow equations for the 9 four-fermion coupling constants. While the full phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, we confirm that when forward scattering dominates, the only ordering tendency with divergent susceptibility at finite temperature is the nematic. At finite tempera…
We develop a theory for a qualitatively new type of disorder in condensed matter systems arising from local twist-angle fluctuations in two strongly coupled van der Waals monolayers twisted with respect to each other to create a flat band moiré superlattice. The new paradigm of 'twist angle disorder' arises from the currently ongoing intense research activity in the physics of twisted bilayer graphene. In experimental samples of pristine twisted bilayer graphene, which are nominally free of impurities and defects, the main source of disorder is believed to arise from the unavoidable and uncont…
Based on the four-band continuum model, we study the ordered-current state (OCS) for electrons in bilayer graphene at the charge neutrality point. The present work resolves the puzzles that (a) the energy gap increases significantly with increasing the magnetic field $B$, (b) the energy gap can be closed by the external electric field of either polarization, and (c) the particle-hole spectrum is asymmetric in the presence of $B$, all these as observed by the experiment. We also present the prediction of the hysteresis energy gap behavior with varying $B$, which explains the existing experiment…
Doping twisted bilayer graphene away from charge neutrality leads to an enormous buildup of charge inhomogeneities within each Moiré unit cell. Here we show, using unbiased real-space self-consistent Hartree calculations on a relaxed lattice, that Coulomb interactions smoothen this charge imbalance by changing the occupation of earlier identified `ring' orbitals in the AB/BA region and `center' orbitals at the AA region. For hole doping, this implies an increase of the energy of the states at the ${\bf Γ}$ point, leading to a further flattening of the flat bands and a pinning of the Van Hove s…
Correlated insulators and superconductivity have been observed in "magic-angle" twisted bilayer graphene, when the nearly flat bands close to neutrality are partially filled. While a momentum-space continuum model accurately describes these flat bands, interaction effects are more conveniently incorporated in tight-binding models. We have previously shown that no fully symmetric tight-binding model can be minimal, in the sense of capturing just the flat bands, so extended models are unavoidable. Here, we introduce a family of tight-binding models that capture the flat bands while simultaneousl…
We implement a self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation based on a microscopic model in real space, which allows us to consider the interplay between the Hubbard and the extended Coulomb interaction in twisted bilayer graphene at the magic angle. These two interactions tend to favor different symmetry breaking patterns, having therefore complementary roles in the regimes where one or the other dominates. We show that, for sufficiently large values of the on-site Hubbard repulsion, magic angle graphene has an antiferromagnetic ground state at the charge neutrality point, while at half-filling…
We have considered the AB-stacked bilayer graphene Josephson junction. The bilayers are supposed to be in the charge equilibrium states and at the half-filling in each of the electronic layers of the construction and at each value of the external gate. By considering the interacting bilayers in both sides of the junction and by taking into account both intralayer and interlayer Coulomb interaction effects, we have calculated the normal and excitonic tunnel currents through the junction. The electronic band renormalizations have been taken into account, due to the excitonic pairing effects and …
We study the effects of heterostrain on moiré bands in twisted bilayer graphene and bilayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) systems. For bilayer graphene with twist angle near $1^\circ$, we show that heterostrain significantly increases the energy separation between conduction and valence bands as well as the Dirac velocity at charge neutrality, which resolves several puzzles in scanning tunneling spectroscopy and quantum oscillation experiments at once. For bilayer TMD, we show that applying small heterostrain generally leads to flat moiré bands that are highly tunable.
We use temperature-dependent resistivity in small-angle twisted double bilayer graphene to measure bandwidths and gaps of the bands. This electron-hole asymmetric system has one set of non-dispersing bands that splits into two flat bands with the electric field - distinct from the twisted bilayer system. With electric field, the gap between two emergent flat bands increases monotonically and bandwidth is tuned from 1 meV to 15 meV. These two flat bands with gap result in a series of thermally induced insulator to metal transitions - we use a model, at charge neutrality, to measure the bandwidt…
We study the effect of an in-plane magnetic field on the non-interacting dispersion of twisted bilayer graphene. Our analysis is rooted in the chirally symmetric continuum model, whose zero-field band structure hosts exactly flat bands and large energy gaps at the magic angles. At the first magic angle, the central bands respond to a parallel field by forming a quadratic band crossing point (QBCP) at the Moire Brillouin zone center. Over a large range of fields, the dispersion is invariant with an overall scale set by the magnetic field strength. For deviations from the magic angle and for rea…
Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) exhibits a range of correlated phenomena that originate from strong electron-electron interactions. These interactions make the Fermi surface highly susceptible to reconstruction when $ \pm 1, \pm 2, \pm 3$ electrons occupy each moir\' e unit cell and lead to the formation of correlated insulating, superconducting and ferromagnetic phases. While some phases have been shown to carry a non-zero Chern number, the local microscopic properties and topological character of many other phases remain elusive. Here we introduce a set of novel techniques hingi…
We investigate twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG), a four-layer system composed of two AB-stacked graphene bilayers rotated with respect to each other by a small angle. Our ab initio band structure calculations reveal a considerable energy gap at the charge point neutrality that we assign to the intrinsic symmetric polarization (ISP). We then introduce the ISP effect into the tight-binding parameterization and perform calculations on TDBG models that include lattice relaxation effects down to very small twist angles. We identify a narrow region around the magic angle $θ^\circ = 1.3^{\circ}…
We investigate interaction effects in transport phenomena in bilayer graphene (BLG). For the minimal conductivity in pristine BLG, we find that the conductivity assumes a constant value in the limit $T\to 0$, with the first correction being $\propto \sqrt{T}$. This has to be contrasted from the standard $1/T^2$ in Fermi liquids (neglecting additional logarithms and above all disorder). We furthermore study the Coulomb drag resistivity between two BLGs in the whole range from deep within the Fermi liquid regime all the way to the charge neutrality (CN) point. We find that in the Fermi liquid re…
We study theoretically many-body properties of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene for different doping levels. Our investigation is focused on the emergence, stability, and manifestations of nematicity of the ordered low-temperature electronic state. It is known that, at vanishing interactions, the low-energy spectrum of the system studied consists of four almost-flat almost-degenerate bands. Electron-electron repulsion lifts this degeneracy. To account for such an interaction effect, a numerical mean-field theory is used. Assuming that the ground state has spin-density-wave-like order, we i…
Using non-perturbative theoretical method, we address the problem of strong correlations in twisted bilayer-layer graphene at the magic angle. We concentrate on the solution without symmetry breaking, where conventional Mott insulating state is expected for all integer fillings. At Coulomb repulsion corresponding to dielectric constant $\varepsilon\approx 5$ and several integer fillings we find a Mott-semiconducting state, which simultaneously hosts the Mott state, and inside the Mott gap, a second much smaller semiconduting gap. The presence of these Mott-ingap states, which are located at th…
We analyze the effects of the long-range Coulomb interaction on the distribution of Berry curvature among the bands near charge neutrality of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) closely aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Due to the suppressed dispersion of the narrow bands, the band structure is strongly renormalized by electron-electron interactions, and thus, the associated topological properties of the bands are sensitive to filling. Using a Hartree formalism, we calculate the linear and nonlinear Hall conductivities, and find that for certain fillings, the remote bands contribute subst…
Twisted graphene bilayers provide a versatile platform to engineer metamaterials with novel emergent properties by exploiting the resulting geometric moiré superlattice. Such superlattices are known to host bulk valley currents at tiny angles ($α\approx 0.3 ^\circ$) and flat bands at magic angles ($α\approx 1^\circ$). We show that tuning the twist angle to $α^*\approx 0.8^\circ$ generates flat bands away from charge neutrality with a triangular superlattice periodicity. When doped with $\pm 6$ electrons per moiré cell, these bands are half-filled and electronic interactions produce a symmetry-…
Employing the recently developed momentum-space quantum Monte Carlo scheme, we study the dynamic response of single-particle and collective excitations in realistic continuum models of twisted bilayer graphene. At charge neutrality, this unbiased numerical method reveals strong competition between different symmetry breaking channels with a leading instability towards the intervalley coherent state. Single-particle spectra indicate that repulsive interactions push the fermion spectral weight away from the Fermi energy and open up an insulating gap. The spectra of collective excitations suggest…
Moiré systems displaying flat bands have emerged as novel platforms to study correlated electron phenomena. Insulating and superconducting states appear upon doping magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), and there is evidence of correlation induced effects at the charge neutrality point (CNP) which could originate from spontaneous symmetry breaking. Our theoretical calculations show how optical conductivity measurements can distinguish different symmetry breaking states, and reveal the nature of the correlated states. In the specific case of nematic order, which breaks the discrete rotati…
By applying a self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation, we show that the mechanism of dynamical symmetry breaking can account for the insulating phase that develops about the charge neutrality point of twisted bilayer graphene around the magic angle. ($i$) If the Coulomb interaction is screened by metallic gates, the opening of a gap between the lowest-energy valence and conduction bands proceeds through the breakdown of chiral symmetry at strong coupling. Increasing the dielectric screening, however, we find a critical coupling at which chiral symmetry breaking is suppressed, triggering a v…
We perform a general group-theoretical study of the Kondo problem in monolayer and bilayer graphene around the charge neutrality point. Utilizing the group representation theory, we derive from symmetry considerations a family of the Kondo models for all symmetric placements with either 3- or 6-fold rotational axis of an impurity atom in an arbitrary orbital state. We find six possible classes of the partially anisotropic four-channel Kondo model. As the key result, we argue several possibilities to realize the regime of the dominant channel-symmetric two-channel Kondo effect, protected by the…
According to electronic structure theory, bilayer graphene is expected to have anomalous electronic properties when it has long-period moiré patterns produced by small misalignments between its individual layer honeycomb lattices. We have realized bilayer graphene moiré crystals with accurately controlled twist angles smaller than 1 degree and studied their properties using scanning probe microscopy and electron transport. We observe conductivity minima at charge neutrality, satellite gaps that appear at anomalous carrier densities for twist angles smaller than 1 degree, and tunneling densitie…
We study effects of a repulsive Coulomb interaction on the spectral gap in monolayer and bilayer graphene in the vicinity of the charge neutrality point by employing the functional renormalization-group technique. In both cases Coulomb interaction supports the gap once it is open. For monolayer graphene we correctly reproduce results obtained previously by several authors, e.g., an apparent logarithmic divergence of the Fermi velocity and the gap as well as a fixed point corresponding to a quantum phase transition at infinitely large Coulomb interaction. On the other hand, we show that the gap…
We study symmetry-broken phases in twisted bilayer graphene at small filling above charge neutrality and at Van Hove filling. We argue that the Landau functionals for the particle-hole order parameters at these fillings both have an approximate SU(4) symmetry, but differ in the sign of quartic terms. We determine the order parameter manifold of the ground state and analyze its excitations. For small fillings, we find a strong 1st-order transition to an SU(3)$\otimes$U(1) manifold of orders that break spin-valley symmetry and induce a 3-1 splitting of fermionic excitations. For Van Hove filling…
We propose a model of spin-polarized-current state for electrons in bilayer graphene. The model resolves the puzzles as revealed by experiments that (a) the energy gap $E_{\rm gap}$ of the insulating ground state at the charge neutrality point (CNP) can be closed by a perpendicular electric field of either polarity, (b) $E_{\rm gap}$ increases significantly with increasing the magnetic field $B$, (c) the particle-hole spectrum is asymmetric in the presence of $B$, (d) there is a peak structure in the electric conductivity at small $B$ at the CNP, and (e) there are quantum Hall states stemming …
The recent discovery of correlated insulator states and superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene has paved the way to the experimental investigation of electronic correlations in tunable flat band systems realized in twisted van der Waals heterostructures. This novel twist angle degree of freedom and control should be generalizable to other 2D systems, which may exhibit similar correlated physics behavior while at the same time enabling new techniques to tune and control the strength of electron-electron interactions. Here, we report on a new highly tunable correlated system b…
The occurrence of superconducting and insulating phases is well-established in twisted graphene bilayers, and they have also been reported in other arrangements of graphene layers. We investigate three such arrangements: untwisted AB bilayer graphene on an hBN substrate, two graphene bilayers twisted with respect to each other, and a single ABC stacked graphene trilayer on an hBN substrate. Narrow bands with different topology occur in all cases, producing a high density of states which enhances the role of interactions. We investigate the effect of the long range Coulomb interaction, treated …
