This article deals with the approximation of a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) via amplitude equations. We consider an SPDE with a cubic nonlinearity perturbed by a general multiplicative noise that preserves the constant trivial solution and we study the dynamics around it for the deterministic equation being close to a bifurcation.
Based on the separation of time-scales close to a change of stability, we rigorously derive an amplitude equation describing the dynamics of the bifurcating pattern.
This allows us to approximate the original infinite dimensional dynamics by a simpler effective dynamics associated with the solution of the amplitude equation. To illustrate the abstract result we apply it to a simple one-dimensional stochastic Ginzburg-Landau equation.
Bistability is a key property of many systems arising in the nonlinear sciences. For example, it appears in many partial differential equations (PDEs). For scalar bistable reaction-diffusions PDEs, the bistable case even has take on different names within communities such as Allee, Allen-Cahn, Chafee-Infante, Nagumo, Ginzburg-Landau, $Φ_4$, Schlögl, Stommel, just to name a few structurally similar bistable model names. One key mechanism, how bistability arises under parameter variation is a pitchfork bifurcation. In particular, taking the pitchfork bifurcation normal form for reaction-diffusio…
In the present work, we establish the approximation of nonlinear stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) driven by cylindrical α-stable Lévy processes via modulation or amplitude equations. We study SPDEs with a cubic nonlinearity, where the deterministic equation is close to a change of stability of the trivial solution. The natural separation of time-scales close to this bifurcation allows us to obtain an amplitude equation describing the essential dynamics of the bifurcating pattern, thus reducing the original infinite dimensional dynamics to a simpler finite-dimensional effective d…
We investigate the bifurcation phenomena for stochastic systems with multiplicative Gaussian noise, by examining qualitative changes in mean phase portraits. Starting from the Fokker-Planck equation for the probability density function of solution processes, we compute the mean orbits and mean equilibrium states. A change in the number or stability type, when a parameter varies, indicates a stochastic bifurcation. Specifically, we study stochastic bifurcation for three prototypical dynamical systems (i.e., saddle-node, transcritical, and pitchfork systems) under multiplicative Gaussian noise, …
The effect of multiplicative stochastic perturbations on Hamiltonian systems on the plane is investigated. It is assumed that perturbations fade with time and preserve a stable equilibrium of the limiting system. The paper investigates bifurcations associated with changes in the stability of the equilibrium and with the appearance of new stochastically stable states in the perturbed system. It is shown that depending on the structure and the parameters of the decaying perturbations the equilibrium can remain stable or become unstable. In some intermediate cases, a practical stability of the eq…
We propose a formal framework based on collective coordinates to reduce infinite-dimensional stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with symmetry to a set of finite-dimensional stochastic differential equations which describe the shape of the solution and the dynamics along the symmetry group. We study SPDEs arising in population dynamics with multiplicative noise and additive symmetry breaking noise. The collective coordinate approach provides a remarkably good quantitative description of the shape of the travelling front as well as its diffusive behaviour, which would otherwise on…

The Stable Manifold Theorem for Semilinear Stochastic Evolution Equations and Stochastic Partial Differential Equations II: Existence of stable and unstable manifolds
A central challenge in physics is to describe non-equilibrium systems driven by randomness, such as a randomly growing interface, or fluids subject to random fluctuations that account e.g. for local stresses and heat fluxes not related to the velocity and temperature gradients. For deterministic systems with infinitely many degrees of freedom, normal form and center manifold theory have shown a prodigious efficiency to often completely characterize how the onset of linear instability translates into the emergence of nonlinear patterns. However, in presence of random fluctuations, this reductio…
Bifurcation analysis has many applications in different scientific fields, such as electronics, biology, ecology, and economics. In population biology, deterministic methods of bifurcation are commonly used. In contrast, stochastic bifurcation techniques are infrequently employed. Here we establish stochastic P-bifurcation behavior of (i) a growth model with state-dependent birth rate and constant death rate, and (ii) a logistic growth model with state-dependent carrying capacity, both of which are driven by multiplicative symmetric stable Levy noise. Transcritical bifurcation occurs in the de…
