In this article we provide a Hamilton-Jacobi formalism in locally conformally symplectic manifolds. Our interest in the Hamilton-Jacobi theory comes from the suitability of this theory as an integration method for dynamical systems, whilst our interest in the locally conformal character will account for physical theories described by Hamiltonians defined on well-behaved line bundles, whose dynamic takes place in open subsets of the general manifold. We present a local l.c.s. Hamilton-Jacobi in subsets of the general manifold, and then provide a global view by using the Lichnerowicz-deRham differential. We show a comparison between the global and local description of a l.c.s. Hamilton--Jacobi theory, and how actually the local behavior can be glued to retrieve the global behavior of the Hamilton-Jacobi theory.
Non-holonomic mechanical systems can be described by a degenerate almost-Poisson structure (dropping the Jacobi identity) in the constrained space. If enough symmetries transversal to the constraints are present, the system reduces to a nondegenerate almost-Poisson structure on a ``compressed'' space. Here we show, in the simplest non-holonomic systems, that in favorable circumnstances the compressed system is conformally symplectic, although the ``non-compressed'' constrained system never admits a Jacobi structure (in the sense of Marle et al.).
Taking full advantage of two independent projectively equivalent metrics on the ellipsoid leading to Liouville integrability of the geodesic flow via the well-known Jacobi-Moser system, we disclose a novel integrable system on the sphere $S^n$, namely the "dual Moser" system. The latter falls, along with the Jacobi-Moser and Neumann-Uhlenbeck systems, into the category of (locally) Stäckel systems. Moreover, it is proved that quantum integrability of both Neumann-Uhlenbeck and dual Moser systems is insured by means of the conformally equivariant quantization procedure.
We study the spectral geometry of the conformal Jacobi operator on a 4-dimensional Riemannian manifold (M,g). We show that (M,g) is conformally Osserman if and only if (M,g) is self-dual or anti self-dual. Equivalently, this means that the curvature tensor of (M,g) is given by a quaternionic structure, at least pointwise.
The conditions for R-separation of variables for the conformally invariant Laplace equation on an n-dimensional Riemannian manifold are determined and compared with the conditions for the additive separation of the null geodesic Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The case of 3-dimensions is examined in detail and it is proven that on any conformally flat manifold the two equations separate in the same coordinates.
In this paper, we propose a discrete Hamilton--Jacobi theory for (discrete) Hamiltonian dynamics defined on a (discrete) contact manifold. To this end, we first provide a novel geometric Hamilton--Jacobi theory for continuous contact Hamiltonian dynamics. Then, rooting on the discrete contact Lagrangian formulation, we obtain the discrete equations for Hamiltonian dynamics by the discrete Legendre transformation. Based on the discrete contact Hamilton equation, we construct a discrete Hamilton--Jacobi equation for contact Hamiltonian dynamics. We show how the discrete Hamilton--Jacobi equation…
We develop a Hamilton-Jacobi theory for singular lagrangian systems in the Skinner-Rusk formalism. Comparisons with the Hamilton-Jacobi problem in the lagrangian and hamiltonian settings are discussed.
Employing a suitable nonlinear Lagrange functional, we derive generalized Hamilton-Jacobi equations for dynamical systems subject to linear velocity constraints. As long as a solution of the generalized Hamilton-Jacobi equation exists, the action is actually minimized (not just extremized).
In this paper we propose a geometric Hamilton--Jacobi theory on a Nambu--Jacobi manifold. The advantange of a geometric Hamilton--Jacobi theory is that if a Hamiltonian vector field $X_H$ can be projected into a configuration manifold by means of a one-form $dW$, then the integral curves of the projected vector field $X_H^{dW}$ can be transformed into integral curves of the vector field $X_H$ provided that $W$ is a solution of the Hamilton--Jacobi equation. This procedure allows us to reduce the dynamics to a lower dimensional manifold in which we integrate the motion. On the other hand, the i…
In this paper, some of formulations of Hamilton-Jacobi equations for Hamiltonian system on Lie algebroids are given. Here we use the general properties of Lie algebroids to express and prove two geometric version of the Hamilton-Jacobi theorem for Hamiltonian system on Lie algebroids. Then this results are generalized and two types of time-dependent Hamilton-Jacobi theorem of Hamiltonian system on Lie algebroids are obtained.
The aim of this paper is to develop a Hamilton--Jacobi theory for contact Hamiltonian systems. We find several forms for a suitable Hamilton-Jacobi equation accordingly to the Hamiltonian and the evolution vector fields for a given Hamiltonian function. We also analyze the corresponding formulation on the symplectification of the contact Hamiltonian system, and establish the relations between these two approaches. In the last section, some examples are discussed.
Recently, M. de León el al. ([8]) have developed a geometrical description of Hamilton-Jacobi theory for multisymplectic field theory. In our paper we analyse in the same spirit a special kind of field theories which are gauge field theories. The Hamilton-Jacobi theory for this kind of fields is shown.
In this paper we extend the geometric formalism of the Hamilton-Jacobi theory for time dependent Mechanics to the case of classical field theories in the k-cosymplectic framework.
Recently, M. de León el al. ([9]) have developed a geometric Hamilton-Jacobi theory for Classical Field Theories in the setting of multisymplectic geometry. Our purpose in the current paper is to establish the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi theory in the Cauchy data space, and relate both approaches.
In this paper we extend the geometric formalism of the Hamilton-Jacobi theory for hamiltonian mechanics to the case of classical field theories in the framework of multisymplectic geometry and Ehresmann connections.
We develop a Hamilton-Jacobi theory for singular lagrangian systems using the Gotay-Nester-Hinds constraint algorithm. The procedure works even if the system has secondary constraints.
Examples of non-standard construction of Hamiltonian structures for dynamical systems and the respective Hamilton-Jacobi (H-J) equations, without using Lagrangians, are presented. Alternative H-J equations for Euler top are explicitly exhibited and solved. We demonstrate that some stability criterion, relating the slope of a Casimir function parametrized by the Lagrange multiplier to critical point type, depends on the used Hamiltonian structure and it is inadequate for this reason.
As a continuation of Rabei et al. work [11], the Hamilton- Jacobi partial differential equation is generalized to be applicable for systems containing fractional derivatives. The Hamilton- Jacobi function in configuration space is obtained in a similar manner to the usual mechanics. Two problems are considered to demonstrate the application of the formalism. The result found to be in exact agreement with Agrawal's formalism.
The geometric framework for the Hamilton-Jacobi theory is used to study this theory in the ambient of higher-order mechanical systems, both in the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms. Thus, we state the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi equations in these formalisms and apply our results to analyze some particular physical examples.
Lagrangian submanifolds are becoming a very essential tool to generalize and geometrically understand results and procedures in the area of mathematical physics. Here we use general Lagrangian submanifolds to provide a geometric version of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. This interpretation allows us to study some interesting applications of Hamilton-Jacobi equation in holonomic, nonholonomic and time-dependent dynamics from a geometrical point of view.
The paper is devoted to prove the existence of a local solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in field theory, whence the general solution of the field equations can be obtained. The solution is adapted to the choice of the submanifold where the initial data of the field equations are assigned. Finally, a technique to obtain the general solution of the field equations, starting from the given initial manifold, is deduced.
Jacobi's method is a well-known algorithm in linear algebra to diagonalize symmetric matrices by successive elementary rotations. We report about the generalization of these elementary rotations towards canonical transformations acting in Hamiltonian phase spaces. This generalization allows to use Jacobi's method in order to compute eigenvalues and eigenvectors of Hamiltonian (and skew-Hamiltonian) matrices with either purely real or purely imaginary eigenvalues by successive elementary symplectic "decoupling"-transformations.
In this paper we extend the geometric formalism of Hamilton-Jacobi theory for Mechanics to the case of classical field theories in the k-symplectic framework.
The asymptotic stability of a global solution satisfying Hamilton-Jacobi equations with jumps will be analyzed in dependence on the strong dissipativity of the jump control function and using orbits of the differentiable flows to describe the corresponding characteristic system.
In this paper, we propose a geometric Hamilton-Jacobi theory for systems of implicit differential equations. In particular, we are interested in implicit Hamiltonian systems, described in terms of Lagrangian submanifolds of $TT^*Q$ generated by Morse families. The implicit character implies the nonexistence of a Hamiltonian function describing the dynamics. This fact is here amended by a generating family of Morse functions which plays the role of a Hamiltonian. A Hamilton--Jacobi equation is obtained with the aid of this generating family of functions. To conclude, we apply our results to sin…
A necessary and sufficient condition for a parameter transformation that leaves invariant the energy of a one dimensional autonomous system is obtained. Using a parameter transformation the Hamilton-Jacobi equation is solved by a quadrature. An example of this approach is given.
The Hamilton-Jacobi [$HJ$] analysis for higher-order Chern-Simons gravity is performed. The complete set of $HJ$ Hamiltonians are identified and a fundamental $HJ$ differential is constructed, from which the characteristic equations are obtained. In addition, the symmetries of the theory are identified and the obtained results are compared with other approaches reported in the literature.
Generalizations of the Hamilton-Jacobi and Schrodinger equations for multidimensional variational problems of field theory are deduced. These generalizations are so-called variational differential equations.
Conformally flat spacetimes with an elastic stress energy tensor given by a diagonal trace-free anisotropic pressure tensor are investigated using 1+3 formalism. We show how the null tetrad Ricci components are related to the pressure components and energy density. The 1+3 Bianchi and Jacobi identities and Einstein field equations are written for this particular case. In general the commutators must be considered since they supply potentially new information on higher order derivatives of the 1+3 quantities. We solve the system for the non rotating case which consist of ODEs of a spatial coord…
In this paper we develop a Hamilton-Jacobi theory in the setting of almost Poisson manifolds. The theory extends the classical Hamilton-Jacobi theory and can be also applied to very general situations including nonholonomic mechanical systems and time dependent systems with external forces.
In this survey, we review the classical Hamilton Jacobi theory from a geometric point of view in different geometric backgrounds. We propose a Hamilton Jacobi equation for different geometric structures attending to one particular characterization: whether they fulfill the Jacobi and Leibniz identities simultaneously, or if at least they satisfy one of them. In this regard, we review the case of time dependent and dissipative physical systems as systems that fulfill the Jacobi identity but not the Leibnitz identity. Furthermore, we review the contact evolution Hamilton Jacobi theory as a split…
We extend Hamilton-Jacobi theory to Lagrange-Dirac (or implicit Lagrangian) systems, a generalized formulation of Lagrangian mechanics that can incorporate degenerate Lagrangians as well as holonomic and nonholonomic constraints. We refer to the generalized Hamilton-Jacobi equation as the Dirac-Hamilton-Jacobi equation. For non-degenerate Lagrangian systems with nonholonomic constraints, the theory specializes to the recently developed nonholonomic Hamilton-Jacobi theory. We are particularly interested in applications to a certain class of degenerate nonholonomic Lagrangian systems with symmet…
Reduction theory has played a major role in the study of Hamiltonian systems. On the other hand, the Hamilton-Jacobi theory is one of the main tools to integrate the dynamics of certain Hamiltonian problems and a topic of research on its own. Moreover, the construction of several symplectic integrators rely on approximations of a complete solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The natural question that we address in this paper is how these two topics (reduction and Hamilton-Jacobi theory) fit together. We obtain a reduction and reconstruction procedure for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation with …
In this work we present a formal generalization of the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism, recently developed for singular systems, to include the case of Lagrangians containing variables which are elements of Berezin algebra. We derive the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for such systems, analizing the singular case in order to obtain the equations of motion as total differential equations and study the integrability conditions for such equations. An example is solved using both Hamilton-Jacobi and Dirac's Hamiltonian formalisms and the results are compared.
The covariant Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of Maxwell's equations is derived from the first-order (Palatini-like) Lagrangian using the analysis of constraints within the De~Donder-Weyl covariant Hamiltonian formalism and the corresponding polysymplectic reduction.
Diffieties formalize geometrically the concept of differential equations. We introduce and study Hamilton-Jacobi diffieties. They are finite dimensional subdiffieties of a given diffiety and appear to play a special role in the field theoretic version of the geometric Hamilton-Jacobi theory.
The Hamilton-Jacobi formalism is used to analyze the Weyl theory in the weak-field limit. The complete set of involutive Hamiltonians is obtained, which are classified into involutive and non-involutive. The counting of degrees of freedom is performed. Additionally, the generalized brackets and gauge symmetries are reported.
In this article, the quantum Hamilton- Jacobi theory based on the position dependent mass model is studied. Two effective mass functions having different singularity structures are used to examine the Morse and Poschl- Teller potentials. The residue method is used to obtain the solutions of the quantum effective mass- Hamilton Jacobi equation. Further, it is shown that the eigenstates of the generalized non-Hermitian Swanson Hamiltonian for Morse and Poschl-Teller potentials can be obtained by using the Riccati equation without solving a differential equation.
We develop Hamilton-Jacobi theory for Chaplygin systems, a certain class of nonholonomic mechanical systems with symmetries, using a technique called Hamiltonization, which transforms nonholonomic systems into Hamiltonian systems. We give a geometric account of the Hamiltonization, identify necessary and sufficient conditions for Hamiltonization, and apply the conventional Hamilton-Jacobi theory to the Hamiltonized systems. We show, under a certain sufficient condition for Hamiltonization, that the solutions to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation associated with the Hamiltonized system also solve the…
In this paper we propose a Hamilton-Jacobi theory for implicit contact Hamiltonian systems in two different ways. One is the understanding of implicit contact Hamiltonian dynamics as a Legendrian submanifold of the tangent contact space, and another is as a Lagrangian submanifold of a certain symplectic space embedded into the tangent contact space. In these two scenarios, we propose a Hamilton-Jacobi theory specifically derived with the aid of Herglotz Lagrangian dynamics generated by non-regular Lagrangian functions.
In this paper, we develop a Hamilton-Jacobi theory for forced Hamiltonian and Lagrangian systems. We study the complete solutions, particularize for Rayleigh systems and present some examples. Additionally, we present a method for the reduction and reconstruction of the Hamilton-Jacobi problem for forced Hamiltonian systems with symmetry. Furthermore, we consider the reduction of the Hamilton-Jacobi problem for a Čaplygin system to the Hamilton-Jacobi problem for a forced Lagrangian system.
We develop the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism for Podolsky's electromagnetic theory on the null-plane. The main goal is to build the complete set of Hamiltonian generators of the system, as well as to study the canonical and gauge transformations of the theory.
Following the analysis we have presented in a previous paper (that we refer to as [I]), we describe a Noether theorem related to symmetries, with the associated reduction procedures, for classical dynamics within the Lagrangian and the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism.
The Hamilton-Jacobi analysis of three dimensional gravity defined in terms of Ashtekar-like variables is performed. We report a detailed analysis where the complete set of Hamilton-Jacobi constraints, the characteristic equations and the gauge transformations of the theory are found. We find from integrability conditions on the Hamilton-Jacobi Hamiltonians that the theory is reduced to a $BF$ field theory defined only in terms of self-dual (or anti-self-dual) variables; we identify the dynamical variables and the counting of physical degrees of freedom is performed. In addition, we compare our…
Conformally St{ä}ckel manifolds can be characterized as the class of n-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifolds (M, G) on which the Hamilton-Jacobi equation G($\nabla$u, $\nabla$u) = 0 for null geodesics and the Laplace equation --$Δ$ G $ψ$ = 0 are solvable by R-separation of variables. In the particular case in which the metric has Riemannian signature, they provide explicit examples of metrics admitting a set of n--1 commuting conformal symmetry operators for the Laplace-Beltrami operator $Δ$ G. In this paper, we solve the anisotropic Calder{ó}n problem on compact 3-dimensional Riemannian man…
We extend the geometric Hamilton-Jacobi formalism for hamiltonian mechanics to higher order field theories with regular lagrangian density. We also investigate the dependence of the formalism on the lagrangian density in the class of those yelding the same Euler-Lagrange equations.
