Strong, long-range interactions present a unique challenge for the theoretical investigation of quantum many-body lattice models, due to the generation of large numbers of competing states at low energy. Here, we investigate a class of extended bosonic Hubbard models with off-site terms interpolating between short and infinite range, thus allowing for an exact numerical solution for all interaction strengths. We predict a novel type of stripe crystal at strong coupling. Most interestingly, for intermediate interaction strengths we demonstrate that the stripes can turn superfluid, thus leading to a self-assembled array of quasi-one-dimensional superfluids. These bosonic superstripes turn into an isotropic supersolid with decreasing the interaction strength. The mechanism for stripe formation is based on cluster self-assembling in the corresponding classical ground state, reminiscent of classical soft-matter models of polymers, different from recently proposed mechanisms for cold gases of alkali or dipolar magnetic atoms.
We study the ground state phase diagram of a two dimensional mixed-spin system of coupled alternating spin-1 and $1/2$ chains with a stripe supersolid phase. Utilizing different analytical and numerical approaches such as mean field approximation, cluster mean field theory and linear spin wave theory, we demonstrate that our system displays a rich ground state phase diagram including novel stripe supersolid, solids with different fillings and super-counterfluid phases, in addition to a stripe solid with half filling, superfluid and Mott insulating phases. In order to find a minimal mixed-spin …
We use microscopic Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism to explore the ground-state phase diagram of the single-band attractive Hofstadter-Hubbard model on a square lattice. We show that the interplay between the Hofstadter butterfly and superfluidity breaks spatial symmetry, and gives rise to stripe-ordered superfluid and supersolid phases in large parameter spaces. We also discuss the effects of a trapping potential and comment on the viability of observing stripe-ordered phases with cold Fermi gases.
Supersolidity - a coexistence of superfluidity and crystalline or amorphous density variations - has been vividly debated ever since its conjecture. While the initial focus was on helium-4, recent experiments uncovered supersolidity in ultra-cold dipolar quantum gases. Here, we propose a new self-bound supersolid phase in a binary mixture of Bose gases with short-range interactions, making use of the non-trivial properties of spin-orbit coupling. We find that a first-order phase transition from a self-bound supersolid stripe phase to a zero-minimum droplet state of the Bose gas occurs as a fun…

Supersolidity is an intriguing concept. It combines the property of superfluid flow with the long-range spatial periodicity of solids, two properties which are often mutually exclusive. The original discussion of quantum crystals and supersolidity focuses on solid Helium-4 where it was predicted that vacancies could form dilute weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates. In this system, direct observation of supersolidity has been elusive. The concept of supersolidity was then generalized to include other superfluid systems which break the translational symmetry of space. One of such systems…
A Bose gas under the effect of Raman Spin-Orbit Coupling (SOC) is analyzed using the Discrete Spin T-moves Diffusion Monte Carlo method. By computing the energy as well as the static structure factor and the superfluid fraction of the system, the emergence of an energetically favorable supersolid stripe state is observed, which is in agreement with recent observations. A significant enhancement of the stability of the stripe phase with respect to the mean-field prediction is observed when the strength of the inter-atomic correlations is increased. We also quantify and characterize the degree o…
We show anisotropy of the dipole interaction between magnetic atoms or polar molecules can stabilize new quantum phases in an optical lattice. Using a well controlled numerical method based on the tensor network algorithm, we calculate phase diagram of the resultant effective Hamiltonian in a two-dimensional square lattice - an anisotropic Hubbard model of hard-core bosons with attractive interaction in one direction and repulsive interaction in the other direction. Besides the conventional superfluid and the Mott insulator states, we find the striped and the checkerboard charge density wave s…
By means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations we study phase diagrams of dipolar bosons in a square optical lattice. The dipoles in the system are parallel to each other and their orientation can be fixed in any direction of the three-dimensional space. Starting from experimentally tunable parameters like scattering length and dipolar interaction strength, we derive the parameters entering the effective Hamiltonian. Depending on the direction of the dipoles, various types of supersolids (e.g. checkerboard, stripe) and solids (checkerboard, stripe, diagonal stripe, and an incompressible phase) ca…
The phase diagram of a spin-orbit-coupled two-component Bose gas includes a supersolid stripe phase, which is featuring density modulations along the direction of the spin-orbit coupling. This phase has been recently found experimentally [J.~Li \textit{et al.}, Nature (London) \textbf{543}, 91 (2017)]. In the present work we characterize the superfluid behavior of the stripe phase by calculating the drag force acting on a moving impurity. Because of the gapless band structure of the excitation spectrum, the Landau critical velocity vanishes if the motion is not strictly parallel to the stripes…
The competition of dipole-dipole and contact interactions leads to exciting new physics in dipolar gases, well-illustrated by the recent observation of quantum droplets and rotons in dipolar condensates. We show that the combination of the roton instability and quantum stabilization leads under proper conditions to a novel regime that presents supersolid properties, due to the coexistence of stripe modulation and phase coherence. In a combined experimental and theoretical analysis, we determine the parameter regime for the formation of coherent stripes, whose lifetime of a few tens of millisec…
Supersolidity is deeply connected with the emergence of Goldstone modes, reflecting the spontaneous breaking of both phase and translational symmetry. Here, we propose accessible signatures of these modes in harmonically trapped spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, where supersolidity appears in the form of stripes. By suddenly changing the trapping frequency, an axial breathing oscillation is generated, whose behavior changes drastically at the critical Raman coupling. Above the transition, a single mode of hybridized density and spin nature is excited, while below it, we predict a b…
We analyse the coexistence of superfluid and density wave (stripe) order in a quasi-two-dimensional gas of dipolar fermions aligned by an external field. Remarkably, the anisotropic nature of the dipolar interaction allows for such a coexistence in a large region of the zero temperature phase diagram. In this region, the repulsive part of the interaction drives the stripe formation and the attractive part induces the pairing, resulting in a supersolid with $p$-wave Cooper pairs aligned along the stripes. From a momentum space perspective, the stability of the supersolid phase is due to the fac…
We investigate the quench dynamics of the dipolar bosons in two dimensional optical lattice of square geometry using the time dependent Gutzwiller method. The system exhibits different density orders like the checkerboard and the striped pattern, depending upon the polarization angle of the dipoles. We quench the hopping parameter across the striped density wave (SDW) to striped supersolid (SSS) phase transition, and obtain the scaling laws for the correlation length and topological vortex density, as function of the quench rate. The results are reminiscent of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM).…
We present the theoretical mean-field zero-temperature phase diagram of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with dipolar interactions loaded into an optical lattice with a staggered flux. Apart from uniform superfluid, checkerboard supersolid and striped supersolid phases, we identify several supersolid phases with staggered vortices, which can be seen as combinations of supersolid phases found in earlier work on dipolar BECs and a staggered-vortex phase found for bosons in optical lattices with staggered flux. By allowing for different phases and densities on each of the four sites of the elemen…
The phase diagram of a Bose-Einstein condensate with Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling includes a stripe phase with supersolid features. In this work we develop a perturbation approach to study the ground state and the Bogoliubov modes of this phase, holding for small values of the Raman coupling. We obtain analytical predictions for the most relevant observables (including the periodicity of stripes, sound velocities, compressibility, and magnetic susceptibility) which are in excellent agreement with the exact (non perturbative) numerical results, obtained for significantly large values of th…
We investigate the extended hard-core Bose-Hubbard model on the triangular lattice as a function of spatial anisotropy with respect to both tunneling and nearest-neighbor interaction strength. At half-filling the system can be tuned from decoupled one-dimensional chains to a two-dimensional solid phase with alternating density order by adjusting the anisotropic coupling. At intermediate anisotropy, however, frustration effects dominate and an incommensurate supersolid phase emerges, which is characterized by incommensurate density order as well as an anisotropic superfluid density. We demonstr…
We demonstrate spontaneous generation of spatially-periodic supersolid-like super-lattice and stripe solitons in Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupled spin-1 and spin-2 quasi-two-dimensional nonmagnetic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The solitons in a weakly SO-coupled spin-1 BEC are circularly-symmetric of $(-1, 0, +1)$ and $(0, +1, +2)$ types and have inherent vorticity; the numbers in the parentheses are the winding numbers in hyper-spin components $+1, 0, -1$, respectively. The circularly-symmetric solitons in an SO-coupled spin-2 BEC are of types $(-2, -1, 0, +1, +2)$ and $(-1, 0, +1, +2, +3)…
Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates represent a powerful platform for the exploration of quantum many-body phenomena arising from long-range interactions. A series of recent experiments has demonstrated the formation of supersolid states of matter. Subsequent theoretical works have shown that quantum fluctuations can affect the underlying phase transition and may lead to the emergence of supersolids with various lattice structures in dipolar condensates. In this work we explore the signatures of such different geometries in confined finite condensates. In addition to previously found triangular …
The soft-core boson system is one of the simplest models of supersolids, which have both off-diagonal long-range order (Bose-Einstein condensation) and diagonal long-range order (crystalline order). Although this model has been studied from various points of view, studies of the stability of current-flowing states are lacking. Solving the Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov equations, we obtain excitation spectra in superfluid, supersolid, and stripe phases. On the basis of the results of the excitation spectra, we present a stability phase diagram that shows the region of the metastable superflow…
In the past few decades, the search for supersolid-like phases has attracted great attention in condensed matter and ultracold atom communities. Here we experimentally demonstrate a route for realizing a superfluid stripe-phase in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate by employing a weak optical lattice to induce momentum-space hopping between two spin-orbit band minima. We characterize the striped ground state as a function of lattice coupling strength and spin-orbit detuning and find good agreement with mean-field simulations. We observe coherent Rabi oscillations in momentum space b…
We study rotating quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein-condensates, in which atoms are dressed to a highly excited Rydberg state. This leads to weak effective interactions that induce a transition to a mesoscopic supersolid state. Considering slow rotation, we determine its superfluidity using Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations as well as mean field calculations. For rapid rotation, the latter reveal an interesting competition between the supersolid crystal structure and the rotation-induced vortex lattice that gives rise to new phases, including arrays of mesoscopic vortex crystals.
We investigate topological supersolidity of dipolar Fermi gases in a spin-dependent 2D optical lattice. Numerical results show that the topological supersolid states can be synthesized via the combination of topological superfluid states with the stripe order, where the topological superfluid states generated with dipolar interaction possess the $Δ_{x}+iΔ_{y}$ order, and it is of D class topological classification. By adjusting the ratio between hopping amplitude $t_{x}/t_{y}$ and interaction strength $U$ with dipole orientation $ϕ\approx \fracπ{4}$, the system will undergo phase transitions a…
Using a beyond-mean-field model including a Lee-Huang-Yang-type interaction, we demonstrate a supersolid-like spatially-periodic square- and triangular-lattice crystallization of droplets in a polarized dipolar condensate confined by an appropriate three-dimensional (3D) box trap. In this paper we consider a rectangular box (cuboid) trap, a square box (cuboid with two equal sides) trap, a cylindrical box trap and a hexagonal box (hexagonal prism) trap. The droplet lattice is always formed in the $x$-$y$ plane perpendicular to the polarization $z$ direction of dipolar atoms. In contrast to a ha…
A novel supersolid phase is predicted for an ensemble of Rydberg atoms in the dipole-blockade regime, interacting via a repulsive dipolar potential "softened" at short distances. Using exact numerical techniques, we study the low temperature phase diagram of this system, and observe an intriguing phase consisting of a crystal of mesoscopic superfluid droplets. At low temperature, phase coherence throughout the whole system, and the ensuing bulk superfluidity, are established through tunnelling of identical particles between neighbouring droplets.

We have considered the dislocation network model for the supersolid state in He-4 crystals. In difference with uniform 2D and 3D systems, the temperature of superfluid transition T_c in the network is much smaller than the degeneracy temperature T_d. It is shown that a crossover into a quasi superfluid state occurs in the temperature interval between T_c and T_d. Below the crossover temperature the time of decay of the flow increases exponentially under decrease of the temperature. The crossover has a continuous character and the crossover temperature does not depend on the density of dislocat…
We investigate a cold atomic mixture of spinless bosons and fermions in two-dimensional optical lattices. In the presence of a nested Fermi surface, the bosons may develop a fascinating supersolid behavior characterized by a finite superfluid density as well as a spatial density wave order. Focusing on the triangular lattice geometry and combining a general Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson approach with microscopically derived mean-field theory, we find an exotic supersolid phase at a fermionic band-filling of $n_f = 3/4$ with a Kagome-type crystalline order. We also address the case of anisotropic hopp…
Using an unbiased quantum Monte Carlo method, we obtain convincing evidence of the existence of a checkerboard supersolid at a {\it commensurate} filling factor 1/2 (commensurate supersolid) in the soft-core Bose-Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor repulsions on a cubic lattice. In conventional cases, supersolids are realized at incommensurate filling factors by a doped-defect-condensation mechanism, where particles (holes) doped into a perfect crystal act as interstitials (vacancies) and delocalize in the crystal order. However, in the above model, a supersolid state is stabilized even at the…
We study by means of first principle Quantum Monte Carlo simulations the ground state phase diagram of a system of dipolar bosons with aligned dipole moments, and with the inclusion of a two-body repulsive potential of varying range. The system is shown to display a supersolid phase in a relatively broad region of the phase diagram, featuring different crystalline patterns depending on the density and on the range of the repulsive part of the interaction (scattering length). The supersolid phase is sandwiched between a classical crystal of parallel filaments and a homogeneous superfluid phase.…
We demonstrate a supersolid-like spatially-periodic square- and honeycomb-lattice crystallization of droplets, in addition to the commonly-studied triangular-lattice crystallization, in a cylindrically-symmetric quasi-two-dimensional trapped dipolar condensate, using a beyond-mean-field model including a quantum-fluctuation Lee-Huang-Yang-type interaction. These three types of crystallization of droplets may appear for the same atomic interactions and the same trap frequencies. The energy $E$ of all three crystallization as a function of number $N$ of atoms satisfy the universal scaling relati…
A supersolid is a counter-intuitive state of matter that combines the frictionless flow of a superfluid with the crystal-like periodic density modulation of a solid. Since the first prediction in the 1950s, experimental efforts to realize this state have focussed mainly on Helium, where supersolidity remains elusive. Recently, supersolidity has also been studied intensively in ultracold quantum gases, and some of its defining properties have been induced in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) and BECs coupled to two crossed optical cavities. However, the periodicity of the crys…
In the present paper, we study finite-temperature phase structure of two-component hard-core bosons in a cubic optical lattice. The system that we study in the present paper is an effective model for the Bose-Hubbard model with strong on-site repulsions and is called bosonic t-J model. This model is a bosonic counterpart of the t-J model for the strongly-correlated electron systems like the high-temperature superconducting materials. We study the model by means of path-integral methods and Monte-Carlo simulations. We found that this system has a very rich phase structure including checkerboard…
By means of a mean-field method, we have studied the zero temperature structure and excitation spectrum of a three-dimensional soft-core bosonic system for a value of the interaction strength that favors a crystal structure made of atomic nano-clusters arranged with FCC ordering. In addition to the longitudinal and transverse phonon branches expected for a normal crystal, the excitation spectrum shows a soft mode related to the breaking of gauge symmetry, which signals a partial superfluid character of the solid. Additional evidence of supersolidity is provided by the calculation of the superf…
We propose a scheme to dynamically create a supersolid state in an optical lattice, using an attractive mixture of mass-imbalanced bosons. Starting from a "molecular" quantum crystal, supersolidity is induced dynamically as an out-of-equilibrium state. When neighboring molecular wavefunctions overlap, both bosonic species simultaneously exhibit quasi-condensation and long-range solid order, which is stabilized by their mass imbalance. Supersolidity appears in a perfect one-dimensional crystal, without the requirement of doping. Our model can be realized in present experiments with bosonic mixt…
Supersolids are theoretically predicted quantum states that break the continuous rotational and translational symmetries of liquids while preserving superfluid transport properties. Over the last decade, much progress has been made in understanding and characterizing supersolid phases through numerical simulations for specific interaction potentials. The formulation of an analytically tractable framework for generic interactions still poses theoretical challenges. By going beyond the usually considered quadratic truncations, we derive a systematic higher-order generalization of the Gross-Pitae…

The droplet crystal phase of a symmetric binary mixture of Rydberg-blockaded dipolar Bose gases is studied by computer simulation. At high temperature each droplet comprises on average equal numbers of particles of either component, but the two components demix below the supersolid transition temperature, i.e., droplets mostly consist of particles of one component. Droplets consisting of the same component will also favor clustering. Demixing is driven by quantum tunnelling of particles across droplets over the system, and does not take place in a non-superfluid crystal. This effect should be …
