The droplet crystal phase of a symmetric binary mixture of Rydberg-blockaded dipolar Bose gases is studied by computer simulation. At high temperature each droplet comprises on average equal numbers of particles of either component, but the two components demix below the supersolid transition temperature, i.e., droplets mostly consist of particles of one component. Droplets consisting of the same component will also favor clustering. Demixing is driven by quantum tunnelling of particles across droplets over the system, and does not take place in a non-superfluid crystal. This effect should be easily detectable in a cold gas experiment.
We calculate the mean-field phase diagram of a zero-temperature, binary Bose mixture on a square optical lattice, where one species possesses a non-negligible dipole moment. Remarkably, this system exhibits supersolidity for anomalously weak dipolar interaction strengths, which are readily accessible with current experimental capabilities. The supersolid phases are robust, in that they occupy large regions in the parameter space. Further, we identify a first-order quantum phase transition between supersolid and superfluid phases. Our results demonstrate the rich features of the dipolar Bose mi…
Motivated by recent experiments and theoretical investigations on binary mixtures, we investigate the miscible-immiscible transition at finite temperature by means of Quantum Monte Carlo. Based on the observation that the segregated phase is strongly affected by temperature, we propose to use the degree of demixing for thermometry of a binary bosonic mixture trapped in an optical lattice. We show that the proposed method is especially sensitive at low temperatures, of the order of the tunnelling amplitude, and therefore is particularly suitable in the regime where quantum magnetism is expected…
We derive the complete mixing-demixing phase-diagram relevant to a bosonic binary mixture confined in a ring trimer and modeled within the Bose-Hubbard picture. The mixing properties of the two quantum fluids, which are shown to be strongly affected by the fragmented character of the confining potential, are evaluated by means of a specific indicator imported from Statistical Thermodynamics and are shown to depend only on two effective parameters incorporating the asymmetry between the heteronuclear species. To closely match realistic experimental conditions, our study is extended also beyond …
The usual treatment of a Bose-Fermi mixture relies on weak-coupling Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) and density-functional (DF) Lagrangians, often including the more realistic {perturbative} Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) corrections. We suggest analytic {non-perturbative} beyond-mean-field Bose and Fermi Lagrangians valid along the crossover from weak- to strong-coupling limits of intra-species interactions consistent with the LHY corrections and the strong-coupling (unitarity) limit for small and large scattering lengths $|a|$, respectively, and use these to study the Bose-Fermi mixture. We study numerically mi…
Recent studies on supersolidity in a single-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) have relied on the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction for stabilization of self-bound droplets, which however involves a high density inside the droplets, limiting the lifetime of the supersolid. Here we propose a two-component mixture of dipolar and nondipolar BECs, such as an $^{166}$Er-$^{87}$Rb mixture, to create and stabilize a supersolid without the LHY correction, which can suppress the atomic loss and may allow observation of the long-time dynamics of the supersolid. In such a system, supersolidity can be…
An exactly solvable model mimicking demixing of two Bose-Einstein condensates at the many-body level of theory is devised. Various properties are expressed in closed form along the demixing pathway and investigated. The connection between the center-of-mass coordinate and in particular the relative center-of-mass coordinate and demixing is explained. The model is also exactly solvable at the mean-field level of theory, allowing thereby comparison between many-body and mean-field properties. Applications are briefly discussed.
Breakthrough experiments have newly explored the fascinating physics of dipolar quantum droplets and supersolids. The recent realization of dipolar mixtures opens further intriguing possibilities. We show that under rather general conditions, the presence of a second component catalyzes droplet nucleation and supersolidity in an otherwise unmodulated condensate. Droplet catalyzation in miscible mixtures, which may occur even for a surprisingly small impurity doping, results from a local roton instability triggered by the doping-dependent modification of the effective dipolar strength. The cata…
Supersolidity - a coexistence of superfluidity and crystalline or amorphous density variations - has been vividly debated ever since its conjecture. While the initial focus was on helium-4, recent experiments uncovered supersolidity in ultra-cold dipolar quantum gases. Here, we propose a new self-bound supersolid phase in a binary mixture of Bose gases with short-range interactions, making use of the non-trivial properties of spin-orbit coupling. We find that a first-order phase transition from a self-bound supersolid stripe phase to a zero-minimum droplet state of the Bose gas occurs as a fun…
Quantum fluctuations can stabilize Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) against the mean-field collapse. Stabilization of the condensate has been observed in quantum degenerate Bose-Bose mixtures and dipolar BECs. The fine-tuning of the interatomic interactions can lead to the emergence of two new states of matter: liquid-like selfbound quantum droplets and supersolid crystals formed from these droplets. We review the properties of these exotic states of matter and summarize the experimental progress made using dipolar quantum gases and Bose-Bose mixtures. We conclude with an outline of important o…
We show that, depending on the ratio between the inter- and the intra-species interactions, a binary mixture trapped in a three-well potential with periodic boundary conditions exhibits three macroscopic ground-state configurations which differ in the degree of mixing. Accordingly, the corresponding quantum states feature either delocalization or a Schrödinger cat-like structure. The two-step phase separation occurring in the system, which is smoothed by the activation of tunnelling processes, is confirmed by the analysis of the energy spectrum that collapses and rearranges at the two critical…
We study supersolid-like states in a quasi-two-dimensional trapped Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit (SO) coupled spin-1 condensate. For small strengths of SO coupling $γ$ ($γ\lessapprox 0.75$), in the ferromagnetic phase, circularly-symmetric $(0,\pm 1, \pm 2)$- and $(\mp 1, 0,\pm 1)$-type states are formed where the numbers in the parentheses denote the angular momentum of the vortex at the center of the components and where the upper (lower) sign correspond to Rashba (Dresselhaus) coupling; in the antiferromagnetic phase, only $(\mp 1, 0,\pm 1)$-type states are formed. For large strengths o…
We investigate the phase separation mechanism of bosonic binary mixtures in spatially-fragmented traps, evidencing the emergence of phases featuring a different degree of mixing. The analysis is initially carried out by means of a semiclassical approach which transparently shows the occurrence of critical phenomena. These predictions are actually corroborated by the study of genuinely quantum indicators, including, but not limited to, the energy levels' structure and the entanglement between the species. The scope of our work goes also beyond the ground state's properties, as it comprises exci…
We consider a mixture of ultracold bosonic atoms on a one-dimensional lattice described by the XXZ-Bose-Hubbard model, where the tunneling of one species depends on the spin state of a second deeply trapped species. We show how the inclusion of antiferromagnetic interactions among the spin degrees of freedom generates a Devil's staircase of symmetry-protected topological phases for a wide parameter regime via a bosonic analog of the Peierls mechanism in electron-phonon systems. These topological Peierls insulators are examples of symmetry-breaking topological phases, where long-range order due…
We investigate the mechanism of formation of supermixed soliton-like states in bosonic binary mixtures loaded in ring lattices. We evidence the presence of a common pathway which, irrespective of the number of lattice sites and upon variation of the interspecies attraction, leads the system from a mixed and delocalized phase to a supermixed and localized one, passing through an intermediate phase where the supermixed soliton progressively emerges. The degrees of mixing, localization and quantum correlation of the two condensed species, quantified by means of suitable indicators commonly used i…
Using the fractional statistical properties of so-called anyonic particles, we present exact solutions for up to six strongly interacting particles in one-dimensional confinement that interpolate the usual bosonic and fermionic limits. Specifically, we consider two-component mixtures of anyons and use these to eludicate the mixing-demixing properties of both balanced and imbalanced systems. Importantly, we demonstrate that the degree of demixing depends sensitively on the external trap in which the particles are confined. We also show how one may in principle probe the statistical parameter of…
