Fits to determine parton distribution functions using top-antitop, inclusive $W/Z$ boson and $W^{\pm}$ boson production measurements in association with jets from ATLAS, in combination with deep-inelastic scattering data from HERA, are presented. The ATLAS $W/Z$ boson data exhibit sensitivity to the valence quark distributions and the light quark sea composition, whereas the top-quark pair production data have sensitivity to the gluon distribution. The impact of the these data is increased by fitting several distributions simultaneously, with the full information on the systematic and statistical correlations between data points. The parton distribution functions extracted using $W^{\pm}$ + jets data show an improved determination of the high-$x$ sea-quark densities, while confirming the unsuppressed strange-quark density at lower $x$ < 0.02 found by previous ATLAS analyses.
We present fits to determine Parton Distribution Functions using a diverse set of measurements from the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, including inclusive $W$ and $Z$ boson production, $t\bar{t}$ production, $W$+jets and $Z$+jets production, inclusive jet production and direct photon production. These ATLAS measurements are used in combination with deep-inelastic scattering data from the electron-proton collider HERA. Particular attention is paid to the correlation of systematic uncertainties within and between the various ATLAS data sets and to the impact of model, theoretical and parameterisat…
This paper presents an analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order in the theory of quantum chromodynamics for the determination of a new set of proton parton distribution functions using diverse measurements in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$, 8 and 13 TeV, performed by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, together with deep inelastic scattering data from $ep$ collisions at the HERA collider. The ATLAS data sets considered are differential cross-section measurements of inclusive $W^{\pm}$ and $Z/γ^*$ boson production, $W^{\pm}$ and $Z$ boson production in association with jets, …
Using differential cross-section data of inclusive $W$ and $Z/γ^\ast$ boson production and of their production in association with jets, and differential cross-section data of top-quark pair production in the lepton + jets and dilepton channels in proton$-$proton collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at center-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=7$ and 8 TeV, together with deep inelastic scattering data from electron$-$proton collisions at the HERA collider, several determinations of parton distribution functions of the proton have been performed by the ATLAS experiment. The results are prese…
In this contribution, Double Parton Scattering processes observed with the ATLAS detector at LHC are discussed. Results of five analyses are presented: production of W boson in association with 2 jets, production of J/psi meson in association with W boson, J/psi production with Z boson, J/psi pair production and four jet events.
The inclusive production of four isolated charged leptons in $pp$ collisions is analysed for the presence of hard double-parton scattering, using 20.2 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded in the ATLAS detector at the LHC at centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV. In the four-lepton invariant-mass range of $80<m_{4\ell}<1000$ GeV, an artificial neural network is used to enhance the separation between single- and double-parton scattering based on the kinematics of the four leptons in the final state. An upper limit on the fraction of events originating from double-parton scattering is determined at 95% …
This article presents a new set of proton parton distribution functions, ATLASepWZVjet20, produced in an analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD. The new data sets considered are the measurements of $W^+$ and $W^-$ boson and $Z$ boson production in association with jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 8~\mathrm{TeV}$ performed by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC with integrated luminosities of $20.2~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ and $19.9~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, respectively. The analysis also considers the ATLAS measurements of differential $W^{\pm}$ and $Z$ boson production at $\sqrt{s} = 7~\mathrm…
We re-analyse the associated production of a prompt J/psi and a W boson in pp collisions at the LHC following the results of the ATLAS Collaboration. We perform the first study of the Single-Parton-Scattering (SPS) contributions at the Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) in alpha_s in the Colour-Evaporation Model (CEM), an approach based on the quark-hadron-duality. Our study provides clear indications for Double-Parton-Scattering (DPS) contributions, in particular at low transverse momenta, since our SPS CEM evaluation, which can be viewed as a conservative upper limit of the SPS yields, falls short …
We present a new software package designed to reduce the computational burden of hadron collider measurements in Parton Distribution Function (PDF) fits. The APFELgrid package converts interpolated weight tables provided by APPLgrid files into a more efficient format for PDF fitting by the combination with PDF and $α_s$ evolution factors provided by APFEL. This combination significantly reduces the number of operations required to perform the calculation of hadronic observables in PDF fits and simplifies the structure of the calculation into a readily optimised scalar product. We demonstrate t…
Jet production at hadron colliders provides constraints on the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton, in particular on the gluon distribution. In the present paper, the impact on PDF of CMS inclusive differential jet cross sections at center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt s = 8$ TeV for jets with low momentum $p\mathrm{_T}$ and produced in the forward direction is investigated at next-to leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The results of the QCD global analysis are compared with theoretical predictions. The impact of low-$p\mathrm{_T}$ jet measurements on the det…
A new measurement of elastic $pp$ scattering at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS-ALFA detector is presented. The measurement was performed using data recorded in a special run of the LHC with $β^\star = 2.5$ km. The elastic cross-section was measured differentially in the Mandelstam $t$ variable and from a fit to ${\textrm{d}}σ/\textrm{d}t$ the total cross section, the $ρ$-parameter and parameters of the nuclear slope are determined. The results for $σ_{\textrm{tot}}$ and $ρ$ are \begin{equation*} σ_{\textrm{tot}}(pp\rightarrow X) = \mbox{104.7} \; \pm 1.1 \; \mbox{mb} , \; \; ρ= \mbox{0.098…
In the present paper, the ATLAS inclusive $W^{\pm}$ and $Z$ boson production data are analysed together with the CMS inclusive $W^{\pm}$ and $Z$ boson production data to investigate any possible tensions between the data sets and to determine the strange sea fraction, within the framework of a parton distribution function fit at next-to-next-to leading order in perturbative QCD.
Recently, the ATLAS data of isolated three-photon production showed that the next-to-leading order (NLO) collinear factorization is not enough to describe experimental data. Therefore, one needs to calculate the cross section beyond the NLO, and as showed later, these data can be well described by the NNLO calculation within the collinear factorization framework. However, it is shown that the $k_t$-factorization can be quite successful in describing exclusive and high energy collision processes, henceforth we decided to calculate isolated three-photon production within this framework. In this …
We discuss the determination of the parton substructure of hadrons by casting it as a peculiar form of pattern recognition problem in which the pattern is a probability distribution, and we present the way this problem has been tackled and solved. Specifically, we review the NNPDF approach to PDF determination, which is based on the combination of a Monte Carlo approach with neural networks as basic underlying interpolators. We discuss the current NNPDF methodology, based on genetic minimization, and its validation through closure testing. We then present recent developments in which a hyperop…
The luminosity determination for the ATLAS detector at the LHC during pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV in 2012 is presented. The evaluation of the luminosity scale is performed using several luminometers, and comparisons between these luminosity detectors are made to assess the accuracy, consistency and long-term stability of the results. A luminosity uncertainty of dL/L = +/- 1.9% is obtained for the 22.7 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collision data delivered to ATLAS at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV in 2012.
We present {\tt GKG18-DPDFs}, a next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD analysis of diffractive parton distribution functions (diffractive PDFs) and their uncertainties. This is the first global set of diffractive PDFs determined within the {\tt xFitter} framework. This analysis is motivated by all available and most up-to-date data on inclusive diffractive deep inelastic scattering (diffractive DIS). Heavy quark contributions are considered within the framework of the Thorne-Roberts (TR) general mass variable flavor number scheme (GM-VFNS). We form a mutually consistent set of diffractive PDFs due to…
We discuss the determination of electroweak parameters from hadron collider observables, focusing on the $W$ boson mass measurement. We revise the procedures adopted in the literature to include in the experimental analysis the uncertainty due to our imperfect knowledge of the proton structure. We show how the treatment of the proton parton density functions (PDFs) uncertainty as a source of systematic error, leads to the automatic inclusion in the fit of the bin-bin correlation of the kinematic distributions with respect to PDF variations. In the case of the determination of $M_W$ from the ch…
Inclusive four-jet events produced in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV are analysed for the presence of hard double-parton scattering using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 37.3 pb$^{-1}$, collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The contribution of hard double-parton scattering to the production of four-jet events is extracted using an artificial neural network, assuming that hard double-parton scattering can be approximated by an uncorrelated overlaying of dijet events. For events containing at least four jets with transverse mom…
The production of $W$/$Z$-bosons in association with jets is an important test of perturbative QCD predictions and also yields information about the parton distribution functions of the proton. We present fits to determine PDFs using inclusive $W$/$Z$-boson and $W$/$Z$+jets measurements from the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The ATLAS measurements are used in combination with deep-inelastic scattering data from HERA. An improved determination of the sea-quark densities at high Bjorken-$x$ is seen, while confirming a strange-quark density similar in size to the up- and down-sea-quark densities i…
At LHCb, proton parton distribution functions (PDFs) can be studied in a unique phase space complementary to that accessible by ATLAS and CMS, corresponding to low and high values of Bjorken-$x$. The measurements of vector boson production in the forward region, with and without an associated jet, are presented. These measurements can be used to constrain the proton PDFs, and in particular, the production of a $Z$ boson in association with a $c$-jet can be studied to measure the intrinsic charm content of the proton.
Theoretical predictions of top-quark cross sections depend on the values of the parameters of the quantum chromodynamics Lagrangian, such as the strong coupling constant and the mass of the top quark, but also on parameters of the electroweak sector of the standard model and parton distribution functions. Comparisons between state-of-the-art calculations and recent measurements at the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN LHC allow for the precise determination of these parameters. In this proceeding, the most recent results by the two collaborations are summarized and discussed.
It has become apparent in recent years that it is important, notably for a range of physics studies at the Large Hadron Collider, to have accurate knowledge on the distribution of photons in the proton. We show how the photon parton distribution function (PDF) can be determined in a model-independent manner, using electron-proton ($ep$) scattering data, in effect viewing the $ep\to e+X$ process as an electron scattering off the photon field of the proton. To this end, we consider an imaginary, beyond Standard Model process with a flavour changing photon-lepton vertex. We write its cross sectio…
We show how an inaccurate determination of experimental uncertainty correlations in high-precision LHC measurements may undermine the reliability of the associated $χ^2$. We formulate the problem rigorously, and devise a regularisation procedure that increases the stability of the $χ^2$ by altering the covariance matrix of the measurement as little as possible. We apply the procedure to the NNPDF4.0 global analysis of parton distribution functions that utilises a large amount of LHC measurements. We find that the regularised $χ^2$ of the NNPDF4.0 determination is lowered by about $3σ$, without…
We review various methods used to estimate uncertainties in quantum correlation functions, such as parton distribution functions (PDFs). Using a toy model of a PDF, we compare the uncertainty estimates yielded by the traditional Hessian and data resampling methods, as well as from explicitly Bayesian analyses using nested sampling or hybrid Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques. We investigate how uncertainty bands derived from neural network approaches depend on details of the network training, and how they compare to the uncertainties obtained from more traditional methods with a specific unde…
Helicity-dependent parton distribution functions at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy from inclusive and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering data
We report a measurement of the charge asymmetry $A_C$ in top quark pair production with the ATLAS experiment. The measurement focuses on dilepton channels ($ee$, $eμ$, $μμ$). The data are unfolded to parton level at full phase space using a fully Bayesian unfolding method. Inclusive and differential measurements of the charge asymmetry are performed.
The hadroproduction of the radially excited heavy-quarkonium states $ψ(2S)$ and $Υ(3S)$ at high energies is studied in the parton reggeization approach and the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic QCD at lowest order in the strong-coupling constant $α_s$ and the relative heavy-quark velocity $v$. A satisfactory description of the $ψ(2S)$ transverse-momentum ($p_T$) distributions measured by ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{S}=7$ TeV is obtained using the color-octet long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) extracted from CDF data at $\sqrt{S}=1.96$ TeV. The importance of…
