The concept of synthetic dimensions, which has enabled the study of higher-dimensional physics on lower-dimensional physical structures, has generated significant recent interest in many branches of science ranging from ultracold-atomic physics to photonics, since such a concept provides a versatile platform for realizing effective gauge potentials and novel topological physics. Previous experiments demonstrating this concept have augmented the real-space dimensionality by one additional physical synthetic dimension. Here we endow a single ring resonator with two independent physical synthetic dimensions. Our system consists of a temporally modulated ring resonator with spatial coupling between the clockwise and counterclockwise modes, creating a synthetic Hall ladder along the frequency and pseudospin degrees of freedom for photons propagating in the ring. We experimentally observe a wide variety of rich physics, including effective spin-orbit coupling, magnetic fields, spin-momentum locking, a Meissner-to-vortex phase transition, and chiral currents, completely in synthetic dimensions. Our experiments demonstrate that higher-dimensional physics can be studied in simple systems by leveraging the concept of multiple simultaneous synthetic dimensions.
We propose a versatile, free-space cavity optomechanics platform built from two photonic crystal membranes, one of which is freely suspended, and designed to form a microcavity less than one wavelength long. This cavity features a series of photonic bound states in the continuum that, in principle, trap light forever and can be favorably used together with evanescent coupling for realizing various types of optomechanical couplings, such as linear or quadratic coupling of either dispersive or dissipative type, by tuning the photonic crystal patterning and cavity length. Crucially, this platform…
Quantum photonic integrated circuit (QPIC) is a promising tool for constructing integrated devices for quantum technology applications. In the optical regime, silicon photonics empowered by complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology provides optical components useful for realizing large-scale QPICs. Optical nonlinearity at the single-photon level is required for QPIC to facilitate photon-photon interaction. However, to date, realization of optical elements with deterministic( i.e., not probabilistic) single-photon nonlinearity by using silicon-based components is challenging, de…
A coherent coupling among different energy photons provided by nonlinear optical interaction is regarded as a photonic version of the Rabi oscillation. Cavity enhancement of the nonlinearity reduces energy requirement significantly and pushes the scalability of the frequency-encoded photonic circuit based on the photonic Rabi oscillation. However, confinement of the photons in the cavity severely limits the number of interactable frequency modes. Here we demonstrate a wide-bandwidth and efficient photonic Rabi oscillation achieving full-cycle oscillation based on a cavity-enhanced nonlinear op…
Time-correlated photon pairs are generated by triply-resonant Four-Wave-Mixing in a In$_{0.5}$Ga$_{0.5}$P Photonic Crystal cavitiy. Maximal efficiency is reached by actively compensating the residual spectral misalignment of the cavity modes. The generation rate reaches 5 MHz in cavities with Q-factor $\approx 4\times 10^4$, more than one order of magnitude larger than what is measured using ring resonators with similar Q factors fabricated on the same chip. The Photonic Crystal source is integrated on a Si photonic circuit, an important asset for applications in quantum technologies.
The discovery of robust transport via topological states in electronic, photonic and phononic materials has deepened our understanding of wave propagation in condensed matter with prospects for critical applications of engineered metamaterials in communications, sensing, and controlling the environment. Topological protection of transmission has been demonstrated in the face of bent paths and on-site randomness in the structure. Here we measure the propagation of microwave radiation in a topological medium possessing time reversal symmetry with a cavity adjacent to the edge channel. A coupled-…
Silicon carbide is evolving as a prominent solid-state platform for the realization of quantum information processing hardware. Angle-etched nanodevices are emerging as a solution to photonic integration in bulk substrates where color centers are best defined. We model triangular cross-section waveguides and photonic crystal cavities using Finite-Difference Time-Domain and Finite-Difference Eigensolver approaches. We analyze optimal color center positioning within the modes of these devices and provide estimates on achievable Purcell enhancement in nanocavities with applications in quantum com…
Topological phases of light exhibit unique properties beyond the realm of conventional photonics. In particular the valley-Hall topological insulator has been realized in a variety of photonic structures because it can be easily induced by breaking certain lattice symmetries. However, the valley-Chern numbers are usually fixed by design and the corresponding topological edge states are forced to propagate in a fixed direction. Here, we propose a mechanism to induce topological transitions via accidental Dirac points in metasurfaces composed of interacting dipole emitters/antennas. For a fixed …
Cavity quantum electrodynamics studies light-matter interactions at single quanta level. Chiral photon-emitter coupling in photonic structures is characterized as unidirectional propagation locked by the local polarization of light. However, to realize the strong interaction of photon-emitter with direction-locked propagation, which will bring novel applications in nonreciprocal quantum devices, has not been reported yet. Here, we propose the coupled photonic crystal and metallic nanoparticle structure, where through strong local field with high helicity, the rate of circularly polarized photo…
We report a novel approach to the design and implementation of a tunable cavity on an optical nanofiber (ONF). The key point is to create a composite photonic crystal cavity (CPCC), by combining an ONF and a chirped period defect mode grating. Using numerical simulations we design the CPCC with low scattering loss while tuning the cavity resonance wavelength of \pm10 nm around the designed wavelength. We experimentally demonstrate the tunability of the CPCC, showing good agreement with the simulation results. Our results lay the foundation for a versatile platform for ONF cavity-quantum-electr…
Recent studies of disorder or non-Hermiticity induced topological insulators inject new ingredients for engineering topological matter. Here we consider the effect of purely non-Hermitian disorders, a combination of these two ingredients, in a 1D coupled-cavity array with disordered gain and loss. Topological photonic states can be induced by increasing gain-loss disorder strength with topological invariants carried by localized states in the complex bulk spectra. The system showcases rich phase diagrams and distinct topological states from Hermitian disorders. The non-Hermitian critical behav…
We clarify theoretically that the topological ring-cavity (TRC) modes propagating along the interface between two honeycomb-type photonic crystals distinct in topology can be exploited for achieving stable single-mode lasing, with the maximal intensity larger than a whispering-gallery-mode counterpart by order of magnitude. Especially, we show that the TRC modes located at the bulk bandgap center benefit maximally from the gain profile since they are most concentrated and uniform along the ring cavity, and that, inheriting from the Dirac-like dispersion of topological interface states, they ar…
Photonic resonators allowing to confine the electromagnetic field in ultra-small volumes and with long decay times are crucial to a number of applications requiring enhanced nonlinear effects. For applications to integrated photonic devices on chip, compactness and optimized in-plane transmission become relevant figures of merit as well. Here we optimize an encapsulated Si/SiO$_2$ photonic crystal nanobeam cavity at telecom wavelengths by means of a global optimization procedure, where only the first few holes surrounding the cavity are varied to decrease its radiative losses. This strategy al…
