We discuss the static spherically symmetric Einstein-spinor field system in the possible presence of various spinor field nonlinearities. We take into account that the spinor field energy-momentum tensor (EMT) has in general some off-diagonal components, whose vanishing due to the Einstein equations substantially affects the form of the spinor field itself and the space-time geometry.
In particular, the EMT structure with any spinor field nonlinearities turns out to be the same as that of the EMT of a minimally coupled scalar field with a self-interaction potential. Therefore many results previously obtained for systems with such scalar fields are directly extended to the Einstein-spinor field system. Some special solutions are obtained and discussed, in particular, a solution for the Einstein-Dirac system (which lack asymptotic flatness) and some examples with spinor field nonlinearities.
Einstein-Dirac equations for two spinor fields are considered. It is shown that in this case one can obtain self-consistent equations set for these gravitating spinors. The key idea to obtain Einstein-Dirac equations is to use special ansätze for spinor fields in order to zero some off-diagonal componentes of the spinor energy - momentum tensor.
The Fermi transport of the Dirac spinor is considered as a generalization of the parallel transport of this spinor which was introduced by V. Fock and D. Ivanenko (1929). The possible structure of the new variant of the general-relativistic Dirac equation based on the Fermi transport is discussed.
We consider the most general torsional completion of gravitation together with electrodynamics for the Dirac spinorial material fields, and we show that consistency arguments constrain torsion to be completely antisymmetric and the dynamics to be parity-invariant and described by actions that are either least-order derivative or renormalizable.
Using the fact that a spin connection is defined to an accuracy of a vector it is shown that the spin connection should be modified in such a manner that Dirac equation in a curve space would be compatible with Dirac equation in a flat space.
Within the scope of a spherically symmetric space-time we study the role of a nonlinear spinor field in the formation of different configurations with spherical symmetries. The presence of the non-diagonal components of energy-momentum tensor of the spinor field leads to some severe restrictions on the spinor field itself. Since spinor field is the source of the gravitational one, the metric functions also changes in accordance with it. The system as a whole possesses solutions only in case of some additional conditions on metric functions.
In the present article we solve, via separation of variables, the massless Dirac equation in a nonstationary rotating, causal Gödel-type cosmological universe, having a constant rotational speed in all the points of the space. We compute the frequency spectrum. We show that the spectrum of massless Dirac particles is discrete and unbounded.
We investigate the behavior of the Dirac spinor fields in general relativistic high density stellar backgrounds and the possibility of spontaneous spinorization which is analogous to spontaneous scalarization. We consider the model with the modified kinetic term of the Dirac field by the insertion of the fifth gamma matrix ${\hat γ}^5$ and the conformal coupling of the Dirac spinor field to the matter sector, which would lead to the tachyonic growth of the Dirac spinor field in the high density compact stellar backgrounds. In order to obtain the static and spherically symmetric solutions, we h…
In this paper, the recently-introduced ELKO and the well-known Dirac spinor fields will be compared; however, instead of comparing them under the point of view of their algebraic properties or their dynamical features, we will proceed by investigating the analogies and similarities in terms of their geometrical character viewed from the perspective of torsion. The paper will be concluded by sketching some consequences for the application to cosmology and particle physics.
In this paper we present a detailed calculation of an Ansatz that allows to obtain spherically symmetric Einstein-Dirac configurations in $d$-dimensions. We show that this is possible by combining $2^{\lfloor \frac{d-2}{2} \rfloor}$ Dirac fields, making use of the properties of the angular dependence of the spinors in a spherical background. By applying this Ansatz, we investigate some simple analytical solutions. One of them is a regular wormhole supported by the Dirac fields. Other solutions include a pathological black hole and a naked singularity. We analyze the domain of existence and pro…
We show that the coupling of a Dirac spinor field with the gravitational field in the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity is consistent. For an arbitrary SO(3,1) connection there are two possibilities for the coupling of the spinor field with the gravitational field. The problems of consistency raised by Y. N. Obukhov and J. G. Pereira in the paper {\it Metric-affine approach to teleparallel gravity} [gr-qc/0212080] take place only in the framework of one particular coupling. By adopting an alternative coupling the consistency problem disappears.
It is shown that on the de Sitter space-time the global behavior of the free Dirac spinors in momentum representation is determined by several phases factors which are functions of momentum with special properties. Such suitable phase functions can be chosen for writing down the free Dirac quantum modes of the spin basis that are well-defined even for the particles at rest in the moving local charts where the modes of the helicity basis remain undefined. Under quantization these modes lead to a basis in which the one-particle operators keep their usual forms apart from the energy operator whic…
Self-consistent system of nonlinear spinor field and Bianchi I (BI) gravitational one with time dependent gravitational constant ($G$) and cosmological constant ($Λ$) has been studied. The initial and the asymptotic behaviors of the field functions and the metric one have been thoroughly investigated. Given $Λ= Λ_0/τ^2$, with $τ= \sqrt{-g}$, $G$ has been estimated as a function of $τ$. The role of perfect fluid at the initial state of expansion and asymptotical isotropization process of the initailly anisotropic universe has been elucidated.
Within general relativity, we construct sequences of rapidly rotating Dirac stars consisting of a spinor fluid described by an effective equation of state. We find the physically relevant domain of stable configurations and calculate their principal characteristics which are completely determined by the central density of the spinor fluid, the mass of the nonlinear spinor field, and the velocity of rotation. It is demonstrated that for a certain choice of the spinor field mass, the main physical characteristics of the Dirac stars are close to those that are typical of rotating neutron stars.
The generalization of Sommers--Sen spinor connection for spinor fields, associated with a distribution $V_4^3$ and on this basis the equations for Weyl and Dirac null vector fields on complexificated $V_4^3$ are obtained. We interpret the obtained results by examining the interaction of spinor fields with the inertial forces.
We study configurations consisting of a gravitating spinor field $ψ$ with a nonlinearity of the type $λ\left(\barψψ\right)^2$. To ensure spherical symmetry of the configurations, we use two spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ fields forming a spin singlet. For such systems, we find regular stationary asymptotically flat solutions describing compact objects. For negative values of the coupling constant $λ$, it is shown that, by choosing physically reasonable values of this constant, it is possible to obtain configurations with masses comparable to the Chandrasekhar mass. It enables us to speak of an astrophysic…
We study Dirac spinors in Bianchi type-I cosmological models, within the framework of torsional $f(R)$-gravity. We find four types of results: the resulting dynamic behavior of the universe depends on the particular choice of function $f(R)$; some $f(R)$ models do not isotropize and have no Einstein limit, so that they have no physical significance, whereas for other $f(R)$ models isotropization and Einsteinization occur, and so they are physically acceptable, suggesting that phenomenological arguments may select $f(R)$ models that are physically meaningful; the singularity problem can be avoi…
We analyse the Hawking(-Unruh) effect for a massive Dirac spinor on the Z_2 quotient of Kruskal spacetime known as the RP^3 geon. There are two distinct Hartle-Hawking-like vacua, depending on the choice of the spin structure, and suitable measurements in the static region (which on its own has only one spin structure) distinguish these two vacua. However, both vacua appear thermal in the usual Hawking temperature to certain types of restricted operators, including operators with support in the asymptotic future (or past). Similar results hold in a family of topologically analogous flat spacet…
General relativity is derived from an action which is quadratic in the covariant derivative of certain spinor one-form gravitational potentials. Either a pair of 2-component spinor one-forms or a single Dirac spinor one-form can be employed. The metric is a quadratic function of these spinor one-forms. In the 2-component spinor formulation the action differs from the usual chiral action for general relativity by a total differential. In the Dirac spinor formulation the action is the real part of the former one. The Hamiltonian is related to the ones in positive energy proofs and spinorial quas…
Einstein-Cartan theory is formulated in (1+2)-dimensions using the algebra of exterior differential forms. A Dirac spinor is coupled to gravity and the field equations are obtained by a variational principle. The space-time torsion is found to be given algebraically in terms of the Dirac field. Circularly symmetric, exact solutions that collapse to AdS_3 geometry in the absence of a Dirac spinor are found.
Two-spinor formalism for Einstein Lagrangian is developed. The gravitational field is regarded as a composite object derived from soldering forms. Our formalism is geometrically and globally well-defined and may be used in virtually any 4m-dimensional manifold with arbitrary signature as well as without any stringent topological requirement on space-time, such as parallelizability. Interactions and feedbacks between gravity and spinor fields are considered. As is well known, the Hilbert-Einstein Lagrangian is second order also when expressed in terms of soldering forms. A covariant splitting i…
Employing the covariant language of two-spinors, we find what conditions a curved Lorentzian spacetime must satisfy for existence of a second order symmetry operator for the massive Dirac equation. The conditions are formulated as existence of a set of Killing spinors satisfying a set of covariant linear differential equations. Using these Killing spinors, we then state the most general form of such an operator. Partial results for the zeroth and first order are presented and interpreted as well. Computer algebra tools from the Mathematica package suite xAct were used for the calculations.
Two explicit formulas for metric connections in the bundle of Dirac spinors are studied. Their equivalence is proved. The explicit formula relating the spinor curvature tensor with the Riemann curvature tensor is rederived.
We consider a five-dimensional Einstein--Cartan spacetime upon which Dirac spinor fields can be defined. Dirac spinor fields in five and four dimensions share many features, like the fact that both are described by four-component spinor fields, but they are also characterized by strong differences, like the fact that in five dimensions we do not have the possibility to project on left-handed and right-handed chiral parts unlike what happens in the four-dimensional instance: we conduct a polar decomposition of the spinorial fields, so to highlight all similarities and discrepancies. As an appli…
We show that higher degree Dirac currents of twistor and Killing spinors correspond to the hidden symmetries of the background spacetime which are generalizations of conformal Killing and Killing vector fields respectively. They are the generalizations of 1-form Dirac currents to higher degrees which are used in constructing the bosonic supercharges in supergravity theories. In the case of Killing spinors, we find that the equations satisfied by the higher degree Dirac currents are related to Maxwell-like and Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau equations. Correspondence between the Dirac currents and harmoni…
We show how to transform a Dirac equation in curved spacetime into a Dirac equation in flat spacetime. In particular, we show that any solution of the free massless Dirac equation in a 1+1 dimensional flat spacetime can be transformed via a local phase transformation into a solution of the corresponding Dirac equation in a curved background, where the spacetime metric is encoded into the phase. In this way, the existing quantum simulators of the Dirac equation can naturally incorporate curved spacetimes. As a first example we use our technique to obtain solutions of the Dirac equation in a par…
In flat spacetime, the Dirac equation is the "square root" of the Klein-Gordon equation in the sense that by applying the square of the Dirac operator to the Dirac spinor, one recovers the Klein-Gordon equation duplicated for each component of the spinor. In the presence of gravity, applying the square of the curved-spacetime Dirac operator to the Dirac spinor does not yield the curved-spacetime Klein-Gordon equation, but yields, instead, the Schrödinger-Dirac covariant equation. First, we show that the latter equation gives rise to a generalization to spinors of the covariant Gross-Pitaevskii…
We give a streamlined account of $2$-spinors, up to and including the Dirac equation, using little more than the resources of linear algebra. We prove that the Dirac bundle is isomorphic to the associated bundles $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C}) \times_{\mathrm{SU}_2} S$ and $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C}) \times_{\mathrm{SU}_2} \bar{S}$. A solution of the Dirac equation determines a pair of conjugate $2$-spinor fields over the mass shell $X_m$.
An integrated approach to Lie derivatives of spinors, spinor connections and the gravitational field is presented, in the context of a previously proposed, partly original formulation of a theory of Einstein-Carta-Maxwell-Dirac fields based on "minimal geometric data": all the needed underlying structure is geometrically constructed from the unique assumption of a complex vector field $S\to M$ with 2-dimensional fibers. The Lie derivatives of objects of all considered types, with respect to a vector field $X:M\to TM$, are well-defined without making any special assumption about $X$, and fulfil…
We explicitly compute the Green's function of the spinor Klein-Gordon equation on the Riemannian and Lorentzian manifolds of the form $M_0 \times ... \times M_N$, with each factor being a space of constant sectional curvature. Our approach is based on an extension of the method of spherical means to the case of spinor fields and on the use of Riesz distributions.
Transformation properties of Dirac equation correspond to Spin(3,1) representation of Lorentz group SO(3,1), but group GL(4,R) of general relativity does not accept a similar construction with Dirac spinors. On the other hand, it is possible to look for representation of GL(4,R) in some bigger space, there Dirac spinors are formally situated as some "subsystem." In the paper is described construction of such representation, using Clifford and Grassmann algebras of 4D space.
Exact solutions to an Einstein-Maxwell(E-D-M) system with an electric current are simple models of global cosmic magnetic phenomena in the universe. In this paper, we consider an E-D-M system with two chiral spinors $ ψ^\pm$ coupled with a gauge field $ A$ and an electromagnetic field $F=dA$. We construct a family of exact solutions to the E-D-M system on four-dimensional static Sasakian spacetimes. The electromagnetic field in the solutions is a contact magnetic field, and the chiral spinors are induced from Sasakian quasi-Killing spinors. We find closed universe models whose weak energy cond…
We introduce spinors, at a level appropriate for an undergraduate or first year graduate course on relativity, astrophysics or particle physics. The treatment assumes very little mathematical knowledge (mainly just vector analysis and some idea of what a group is). The SU(2)--SO(3) homomorphism is presented in detail. Lorentz transformation, chirality, and the spinor Minkowski metric are introduced. Applications to electromagnetism, parity violation, and to Dirac spinors are presented. A classical form of the Dirac equation is obtained, and the (quantum) prediction that $g=2$ for Dirac particl…
In spinor formalism, since any massless free-field spinor with spin higher than $1/2$ can be constructed with spin-1/2 spinors (Dirac-Weyl spinors) and scalars, we introduce a map between Weyl fields and Dirac-Weyl fields. We determine the corresponding Dirac-Weyl spinors in a given empty spacetime. Regarding them as basic units, other higher spin massless free-field spinors are then identified. Along this way, we find some hidden fundamental features related to these fields. In particular, for non-twisting vacuum Petrov type N solutions, we show that all higher spin massless free-field spinor…
We study the relations of the positive frequency mode functions of Dirac field in 4-dimensional Minkowski spacetime covered with Rindler and Kasner coordinates, and describe the explicit form of the Minkowski vacuum state with the quantum states in Kasner and Rindler regions, and analytically continue the solutions. As a result, we obtain the correspondence of the positive frequency mode functions in Kasner region and Rindler region in a unified manner which derives vacuum entanglement.
Two real vector fields are revealed as spin connections of the spinor field, which is introduced as a representation of the local Lorentz group by Dirac spinors. One of these fields is identified as the Maxwell field. Another one is the axial field, which is sufficient to describe parity nonconservation effects in atoms and it is sensitive to the second internal degree of freedom of the Dirac spinor field. The polarization associated with this degree of freedom is a distinctive characteristic of the Dirac spinor field in spatially closed localized states. The short-distance behavior of the axi…
We solve for spectrum, obtain explicitly and study group properties of eigenfunctions of Dirac operator on the Riemann sphere $S^2$. The eigenvalues $λ$ are nonzero integers. The eigenfunctions are two-component spinors that belong to representations of SU(2)-group with half-integer angular momenta $l = |λ| - \half$. They form on the sphere a complete orthonormal functional set alternative to conventional spherical spinors. The difference and relationship between the spherical spinors in question and the standard ones are explained.
We apply a new general method of anholonomic frames with associated nonlinear connection structure to construct new classes of exact solutions of Einstein-Dirac equations in five dimensional (5D)gravity. Such solutions are parametrized by off-diagonal metrics in coordinate (holonomic) bases, or, equivalently, by diagonal metrics given with respect to some anholonomic frames (pentads, or funfbiends, satisfing corresponding constraint relations). We consider two possibilities of generalization of the Taub NUT metric in order to obtain vacuum solutions of 5D Einsitein equations with effective ren…
The spinor representation of the Lorentz group does not accept simple generalization with the group GL(4,R) of general linear coordinate transformations. The Dirac equation may be written for an arbitrary choice of a coordinate system and a metric, but the covariant linear transformations of the four-component Dirac spinor exist only for isometries. For usual diagonal Minkowski metric the isometry is the Lorentz transformation. On the other hand, it is possible to define the Dirac operator on the space of anti-symmetric (exterior) forms, and in such a case the equation is covariant for an arbi…
It is shown that since the geometric spinors are elements of Clifford algebras, they must have the same transformation properties as any other Clifford number. In general, a Clifford number $Φ$ transforms into a new Clifford number $Φ'$ according to $Φ\to Φ' = {\rm{R}}\,Φ\,{\rm{S}}$, i.e., by the multiplication from the left and from the right by two Clifford numbers ${\rm R}$ and ${\rm S}$. We study the case of $Cl(1,3)$, which is the Clifford algebra of the Minkowski spacetime. Depending on choice of ${\rm R}$ and ${\rm S}$, there are various possibilities, including the transformations of v…
Dual-helicity eigenspinors of the charge conjugation operator (ELKO spinor fields) belong -- together with Majorana spinor fields -- to a wider class of spinor fields, the so-called flagpole spinor fields, corresponding to the class-(5), according to Lounesto spinor field classification based on the relations and values taken by their associated bilinear covariants. There exists only six such disjoint classes: the first three corresponding to Dirac spinor fields, and the other three respectively corresponding to flagpole, flag-dipole and Weyl spinor fields. Using the mapping from ELKO spinor f…
