In Sedgwick et al. (2019) we introduced and utilised a method to combat surface brightness and mass biases in galaxy sample selection, using core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) as pointers towards their host galaxies, in order to: (i) search for low-surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs); (ii) assess the contributions of galaxies at a given mass to the star-formation-rate density (SFRD); and (iii) infer from this, using estimates of specific star-formation (SF) rate, the form of the SF-galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF). A CCSN-selection of SF-galaxies allows a probe of the form of the SFRD and GSMF deep into the dwarf galaxy mass regime. In the present work, we give improved constraints on our estimates of the SFRD and star-forming GSMF, in light of improved photometric redshift estimates required for estimates of galaxy stellar mass. The results are consistent with a power-law increase to SF-galaxy number density down to our low stellar mass limit of $\sim 10^{6.2}$ M$_{\odot}$. No deviation from the high-mass version of the surface brightness - mass relation is found in the dwarf mass regime. These findings imply no truncation to galaxy formation processes at least down to $\sim 10^{6.2}$ M$_{\odot}$.
Massive stars are the main objects that illuminate H II regions and they evolve quickly to end their lives in core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). Thus it is important to investigate the association between CCSNe and H II regions. In this paper, we present emission line diagnostics of the stellar populations around nearby CCSNe, that include their host H II regions, from the PMAS/PPAK Integral-field Supernova hosts COmpilation (PISCO). We then use BPASS stellar population models to determine the age, metallicity and gas parameters for H II regions associated with CCSNe, contrasting models that co…
We introduce a method for producing a galaxy sample unbiased by surface brightness and stellar mass, by selecting star-forming galaxies via the positions of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). Whilst matching $\sim$2400 supernovae from the SDSS-II Supernova Survey to their host galaxies using IAC Stripe 82 legacy coadded imaging, we find $\sim$150 previously unidentified low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs). Using a sub-sample of $\sim$900 CCSNe, we infer CCSN-rate and star-formation rate densities as a function of galaxy stellar mass, and the star-forming galaxy stellar mass function. Result…
We present a systematic study of the most luminous ($M_{\mathrm{IR}}$ [Vega magnitudes] brighter than $-14$) infrared (IR) transients discovered by the SPitzer InfraRed Intensive Transients Survey (SPIRITS) between 2014 and 2018 in nearby galaxies ($D < 35$ Mpc). The sample consists of nine events that span peak IR luminosities of $M_{[4.5],\mathrm{peak}}$ between $-14$ and $-18.2$, show IR colors between $0.2 < ([3.6]{-}[4.5]) < 3.0$, and fade on timescales between $55$ days $< t_{\mathrm{fade}} < 480$ days. The two reddest events ($A_V > 12$) show multiple, luminous IR outbursts over several…
Stellar and supernova nucleosynthesis in the first few billion years of the cosmic history have set the scene for early structure formation in the Universe, while little is known about their nature. Making use of stellar physical parameters measured by GALAH Data Release 3 with accurate astrometry from the Gaia EDR3, we have selected $\sim 100$ old main-sequence turn-off stars (ages $\gtrsim 12$ Gyrs) with kinematics compatible with the Milky Way stellar halo population in the Solar neighborhood. Detailed homogeneous elemental abundance estimates by GALAH DR3 are compared with supernova yield …
There is observational evidence of a dearth in core-collapse supernova (ccSN) explosions from stars with zero age main sequence (ZAMS) mass M_0~17-30 Msol, referred to as the 'red supergiant problem'. However, simulations now predict that above 20Msol we should indeed only expect stars within certain pockets of M_0 to produce a visible SN explosion. Validating these predictions requires large numbers of ccSNe of different types with measured M_0, which is challenging. In this paper we explore the reliability of using host galaxy emission lines and the Halpha equivalent width to constrain the a…
Recent results suggest that the initial mass function (IMF) of globular clusters (GCs) is metallicity and density dependent. Here it is studied how this variation affects the initial masses and the numbers of core collapse supernovae (CCSNe) required to reproduce the observed iron spreads in GCs. The IMFs of all of the investigated GCs were top-heavy implying larger initial masses compared to previous results computed assuming an invariant canonical IMF. This leads to more CCSNe being required to explain the observed iron abundance spreads. The results imply that the more massive GCs formed at…
The level of star formation in elliptical galaxies is poorly constrained, due to difficulties in quantifying the contamination of flux-based estimates of star formation from unrelated phenomena, such as AGN and old stellar populations. We here utilise core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) as unambiguous tracers of recent star formation in ellipticals within a cosmic volume. We firstly isolate a sample of 421 z < 0.2, r < 21.8 mag CCSNe from the SDSS-II Supernova Survey. We then introduce a Bayesian method of identifying ellipticals via their colours and morphologies in a manner unbiased by redshift…
Several thousand core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) of different flavors have been discovered so far. However, identifying their progenitors has remained an outstanding open question in astrophysics. Studies of SN host galaxies have proven to be powerful in providing constraints on the progenitor populations. In this paper, we present all CCSNe detected between 2009 and 2017 by the Palomar Transient Factory. This sample includes 888 SNe of 12 distinct classes out to redshift $z\approx1$. We present the photometric properties of their host galaxies from the far-ultraviolet to the mid-infrared and…
The majority of massive stars are in binaries, which implies that many core collapse supernovae (ccSNe) should be binaries at the time of the explosion. Here we show that the three most recent, local (visual) SNe (the Crab, CasA and SN1987A) were not binaries, with limits on the initial mass ratios of q=M2/M1<0.1. No quantitative limits have previously been set for CasA and the Crab, while for SN1987A we merely updated existing limits in view of new estimates of the dust content. The lack of stellar companions to these three ccSNe implies a 90% confidence upper limit on the q>0.1 binary fracti…
We present a comprehensive study of an unbiased sample of 150 nearby (<z> = 0.014) core-collapse supernova (CCSN) host galaxies drawn from the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) for direct comparison to the nearest LGRB and SLSN hosts. We use public imaging surveys to gather multi-wavelength photometry for all CCSN host galaxies and fit their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to derive stellar masses and integrated star formation rates. CCSNe populate galaxies across a wide range of stellar masses, from blue and compact dwarf galaxies to large spiral galaxies. We find 33(+4,-…
We age-date the stellar populations associated with 12 historic nearby core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) and 2 supernova impostors, and from these ages, we infer their initial masses and associated uncertainties. To do this, we have obtained new HST imaging covering these CCSNe. Using these images, we measure resolved stellar photometry for the stars surrounding the locations of the SNe. We then fit the color-magnitude distributions of this photometry with stellar evolution models to determine the ages of any young existing populations present. From these age distributions, we infer the most li…
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3 UV and near-IR (nIR) imaging of 21 Superluminous Supernovae (SLSNe) host galaxies, providing a sensitive probe of star formation and stellar mass with the hosts. Comparing the photometric and morphological properties of these host galaxies with those of core collapse supernovae (CCSNe) and long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs), we find SLSN hosts are fainter and more compact at both UV and nIR wavelengths, in some cases we barely recover hosts with absolute magnitude around MV ~ -14. With the addition of ground based optical observations and archiv…
We present new analytic solutions for one-zone (fully mixed) chemical evolution models and explore their implications. In contrast to existing analytic models, we incorporate a realistic delay time distribution for Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) and can therefore track the separate evolution of $α$-elements produced by core collapse supernovae (CCSNe) and iron peak elements synthesized in both CCSNe and SNIa. In generic cases, $α$ and iron abundances evolve to an equilibrium at which element production is balanced by metal consumption and gas dilution, instead of continuing to increase over time. T…

本文结合核心坍缩超新星爆发率与宇宙远紫外辐射密度,首次约束宇宙平均 IMF 斜率约为 1.8-3.2,接近 Salpeter IMF,并提出用 DSNB 中微子观测进一步改进约束。
The five-year Dark Energy Survey supernova programme (DES-SN) is one of the largest and deepest transient surveys to date in terms of volume and number of supernovae. Identifying and characterising the host galaxies of transients plays a key role in their classification, the study of their formation mechanisms, and the cosmological analyses. To derive accurate host galaxy properties, we create depth-optimised coadds using single-epoch DES-SN images that are selected based on sky and atmospheric conditions. For each of the five DES-SN seasons, a separate coadd is made from the other 4 seasons s…
We present observations of three Core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) in elliptical hosts, detected by the Zwicky Transient Facility Bright Transient Survey (BTS). SN 2019ape is a SN Ic that exploded in the main body of a typical elliptical galaxy. Its properties are consistent with an explosion of a regular SN Ic progenitor. A secondary g-band light curve peak could indicate interaction of the ejecta with circumstellar material (CSM). An H$α$-emitting source at the explosion site suggests a residual local star formation origin. SN 2018fsh and SN 2020uik are SNe II which exploded in the outskirts …
The evolution of dust at redshifts z>9, and consequently the dust properties, differs greatly from that in the local universe. In contrast to the local universe, core collapse supernovae (CCSNe) are the only source of thermally-condensed dust. Because of the low initial dust-to-gas mass ratio, grain destruction rates are low, so that CCSNe are net producers of interstellar dust. Galaxies with large initial gas mass or high mass infall rate will therefore have a more rapid net rate of dust production comported to galaxies with lower gas mass, even at the same star formation rate. The dust compo…

We study the spatial correlations between the H$α$ emission and different types of massive stars in two local galaxies, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Messier 33. We compare these to correlations derived for core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) in the literature to connect CCSNe of different types with the initial masses of their progenitors and to test the validity of progenitor mass estimates which use the pixel statistics method. We obtain samples of evolved massive stars in both galaxies from catalogues with good spatial coverage and/or completeness, and combine them with coordinates of …
The 11 Mpc H-alpha and Ultraviolet Galaxy (11HUGS) Survey traces the star formation activity of nearby galaxies. In addition within this volume the detection completeness of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) is high therefore by comparing these observed stellar births and deaths we can make a sensitive test of our understanding of how stars live and die. In this paper, we use the results of the Binary Population and Spectral Synthesis (BPASS) code to simulate the 11HUGS galaxies H-alpha and far-ultraviolet (FUV) star formation rate indicators (SFRIs) and simultaneously match the core-collapse s…
Infrared (IR) observations of core collapse supernovae (CCSNe) have been used to infer the mass of dust that has formed in their ejecta. A plot of inferred dust masses versus supernova (SN) ages shows a trend of increasing dust mass with time, spanning a few decades of observations. This trend has been interpreted as evidence for the slow and gradual formation of dust in CCSNe. Observationally, the trend exhibits a $ t^2$ behavior, exactly what is expected from an expanding optically thick ejecta. In this case, the observed dust resides in the infrared (IR)-thin "photosphere" of the ejecta, an…
Large direct-imaging surveys usually use a template-fitting technique to estimate photometric redshifts for galaxies, which are then applied to derive important galaxy properties such as luminosities and stellar masses. These estimates can be noisy and suffer from systematic biases because of the possible mis-selection of templates and the propagation of the photometric redshift uncertainty. We introduce an algorithm, the Direct Empirical Photometric method (DEmP), which can be used to directly estimate these quantities using training sets, bypassing photometric redshift determination. DEmP al…

Using multi-band photometric images of M 51 and its companion NGC 5195 from ultraviolet to optical and infrared, we investigate spatially resolved stellar population properties of this interacting system with stellar population synthesis models. The observed IRX is used to constrain dust extinction. Stellar mass is also inferred from the model fitting. By fitting observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with synthetical ones, we derive two-dimensional distributions of stellar age, metallicity, dust extinction, and stellar mass. In M 51, two grand-designed spiral arms extending from the bu…
We have surveyed a complete extent of Leo A - an apparently isolated gas-rich low-mass dwarf irregular galaxy in the Local Group. The $B$, $V$, and $I$ passband CCD images (typical seeing $\sim$0.8") were obtained with Subaru Telescope equipped with Suprime-Cam mosaic camera. The wide-field ($20' \times 24'$) photometry catalog of 38,856 objects ($V \sim 16-26$ mag) is presented. This survey is also intended to serve as "a finding chart" for future imaging and spectroscopic observation programs of Leo A.

Spherical asymmetries are prevalent within the outflows of AGB stars. Since binary interaction with a stellar or planetary companion is thought to be the underlying mechanism behind large-scale structures, we included the effects of UV radiation originating from a stellar companion in our chemical kinetics model. The one-dimensional model provides a first approximation of its effects on the chemistry throughout the outflow. The presence of a close-by stellar companion can strongly influence the chemistry within the entire outflow. Its impact depends on the intensity of the radiation (set by th…
Most stars form and spend their early life in regions of enhanced stellar density. Therefore the evolution of protoplanetary discs (PPDs) hosted by such stars are subject to the influence of other members of the cluster. Physically, PPDs might be truncated either by photoevaporation due to ultraviolet flux from massive stars, or tidal truncation due to close stellar encounters. Here we aim to compare the two effects in real cluster environments. In this vein we first review the properties of well studied stellar clusters with a focus on stellar number density, which largely dictates the degree…
