A chiral string can be seen as an ordinary string in a singular gauge for the worldsheet metric and has the ambitwistor string as its tensionless limit. As proposed by Siegel, there is a one-parameter ($β$) gauge family interpolating between the chiral limit and the usual conformal gauge in string theory. This idea was used to compute scattering amplitudes of tensile chiral strings, which are given by standard string amplitudes with modified ($β$-dependent) antiholomorphic propagators.
Due to the absence of a sensible definition of the integrated vertex operator, there is still no ordinary prescription for higher than $3$-point amplitude computations directly from the chiral model. The exception is the tensionless limit.
In this work this gap will be filled. Starting with a chiral string action, the integrated vertex operator is defined, relying on the so-called sectorized interpretation. As it turns out, this construction effectively emulates a left/right factorization of the scattering amplitude and introduces a relative sign flip in the propagator for the sector-split target space coordinates. $N$-point tree-level amplitudes can be easily shown to coincide with the results of Siegel et al.
The sectorized description of the (chiral) heterotic string using pure spinors has been misleadingly viewed as an infinite tension string. One evidence for this fact comes from the tree level 3-point graviton amplitude, which we show to contain the usual Einstein term plus a higher curvature contribution. After reintroducing a dimensionful parameter $\ell$ in the theory, we demonstrate that the heterotic model is in fact two-fold, depending on the choice of the supersymmetric sector, and that the spectrum also contains one massive (open string like) multiplet. By taking the $\ell\to\infty$ lim…
In this work, we investigate the bosonic chiral string in the sectorized interpretation, computing its spectrum, kinetic action and $3$-point amplitudes. As expected, the bosonic ambitwistor string is recovered in the tensionless limit. We also consider an extension of the bosonic model with current algebras. In that case, we compute the effective action and show that it is essentially the same as the action of the mass-deformed $(DF)^{2}$ theory found by Johansson and Nohle. Aspects which might seem somewhat contrived in the original construction --- such as the inclusion of a scalar transfor…
Bosonic and RNS chiral strings have been defined from a singular gauge fixing of the respective Polyakov and spinning string actions, enforcing, among other things, the finite nature of their physical spectra. Except for the heterotic case, the tensionless limits of such chiral models have been shown to describe the same field theories predicted by their ambitwistor analogues. In this paper, we study the Green-Schwarz formulation for Type II and heterotic superstrings in a singular gauge. After performing a light-cone gauge analysis, their physical spectra are shown to match those of RNS chira…
Vertex symmetry for interacting fermions will be shown to lead to a Lagrangian exhibiting $SU(2N)_W$ invariance associated with the subgroup $SU(2N)_q \times SU(2N)_{\bar{q}}$ generated by $C$-odd and $C$-even spin operators. Approximate $SU(6)_W$ vertex symmetry as well as chiral invariance will then be shown to follow from a principle of maximum smoothness (Möller-Rosenfeld) of the bound state quark wave function.
We study chiral symmetry breaking in quenched QED$_4$, using a vertex Ansatz recently proposed by Curtis and Pennington. Bifurcation analysis is employed to establish the existence of a critical coupling and to estimate its value. The main results are in qualitative agreement with the ladder approximation, the numerical changes being minor.
Chiral vertex-operators are defined for continuous quantum-group spins $J$ from free-field realizations of the Coulomb-gas type. It is shown that these generalized chiral vertex operators satisfy closed braiding relations on the unit circle, which are given by an extension in terms of orthogonal polynomials of the braiding matrix recently derived by Cremmer, Gervais and Roussel. This leads to a natural extension of the Liouville exponentials to continuous powers that remain local.
We give an explicit $L^2$-representation of chiral charged fermions using the Hardy-Lebesgue octant decomposition. In the " pure" case such a representation was already used by M. Sato in holonomic field theory. We study both "pure" and " mixed" cases. In the compact case we rigorously define unsmeared chiral charged fermion operators inside the unit circle. Using chiral fermions we orient our findings towards a functional analytic study of vertex algebras as one dimensional quantum field theory.
We prove unboundedness and boundedness of the unsmeared and smeared chiral vertex operators, respectively. We use elementary methods in bosonic Fock space, only. Possible applications to conformal two - dimensional quantum field theory, perturbation thereof, and to the perturbative construction of the sine-Gordon model by the Epstein-Glaser method are discussed. From another point of view the results of this paper can be looked at as a first step towards a Hilbert space interpretation of vertex operator algebras.
The worldline representation of the one loop fermionic effective action is used to obtain the vertex operator for the pion and the sigma in QCD strings. The vertex operator of the scalar sigma is distinguished from that of the pseudo-scalar pion by the presence of an additional operator m V_{0} where m is the current quark mass and V_{0} is a vertex operator that would describe a tachyon in the open bosonic string theory. This leads to a relation between the sigma propagator and the pion propagator, when chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken this relation implies that the propagator construc…
We study chiral vertex operators in the sine-Gordon [SG] theory, viewed as an off-conformal system. We find that these operators, which would have been primary fields in the conformal limit, have interesting and, in some ways, unexpected properties in the SG model. Some of them continue to have scale- invariant dynamics even in the presence of the non-conformal cosine interaction. For instance, it is shown that the Mandelstam operator for the bosonic representation of the Fermi field does {\it not} develop a mass term in the SG theory, contrary to what the real Fermi field in the massive Thirr…
We construct the exponentials of the Liouville field with continuous powers within the operator approach. Their chiral decomposition is realized using the explicit Coulomb-gas operators we introduced earlier. {}From the quantum-group viewpoint, they are related to semi-infinite highest or lowest weight representations with continuous spins. The Liouville field itself is defined, and the canonical commutation relations verified, as well as the validity of the quantum Liouville field equations. In a second part, both screening charges are considered. The braiding of the chiral components is deri…
Based on any chiral vertex operator algebra satisfying a suitable finiteness condition, the semisimplicity of the zero-mode algebra as well as a regularity for induced modules, we construct conformal field theory over the projective line with the chiral vertex operator algebra as symmetries of the theory. We appropriately generalize the argument in [TUY] so that we are able to define sheaves of conformal blocks for chiral vertex operator algebras and study them in detail. We prove the factorization theorem under the fairly general conditions for chiral vertex operator algebras and the zero-mod…
We studied the Adler-Bardeen-Bell-Jackiw anomaly in the context of a finite chiral quark model known as the Spectral Quark Model. Within this model, we obtain the general non-local form of the axial vertex compatible with a non vanishing axial coupling, in the chiral limit. The triangle anomaly is computed and we show that the obtained dependence of the axial vertex with the spectral mass is necessary to ensure both finiteness and the correct violation of the chiral Ward-Takahashi identity.
We obtain explicit expressions for all genus one chiral n-point functions for free bosonic and lattice vertex operator algebras. We also consider the elliptic properties of these functions.
We reconsider the construction of exponential fields in the quantized Liouville theory. It is based on a free-field construction of a continuous family or chiral vertex operators. We derive the fusion and braid relations of the chiral vertex operators. This allows us to simplify the verification of locality and crossing symmetry of the exponential fields considerably. The calculation of the matrix elements of the exponential fields leads to a constructive derivation of the formula proposed by Dorn/Otto and the brothers Zamolodchikov.
Kadanoff's "correlations along a line" in the critical two-dimensional Ising model (1969) are reconsidered. They are the analytical aspect of a representation of abelian chiral vertex operators as quadratic polynomials, in the sense of operator valued distributions, in non-abelian exchange fields. This basic result has interesting applications to conformal coset models. It also gives a new explanation for the remarkable relation between the "doubled" critical Ising model and the free massless Dirac theory. As a consequence, analogous properties as for the Ising model order/disorder fields with…
In the quenched approximation, the gauge covariance properties of three vertex Ansätze in the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the fermion self energy are analysed in three- and four- dimensional quantum electrodynamics. Based on the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action, it is inferred that the spectral representation used for the vertex in the gauge technique cannot support dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. A criterion for establishing whether a given Ansatz can confer gauge covariance upon the Schwinger-Dyson equation is presented and the Curtis and Pennington Ansatz is shown to satisfy …
Naively, helicity flip amplitudes for fermions seem to vanish in the chiral limit of light-front QCD, which would make it nearly impossible to generate a small pion mass in this framework. Using a simple model, it is illustrated how a large helicity flip amplitude is generated dynamically by summing over an infinite number of Fock space components. While the kinetic mass is basically generated by a zero-mode induced counter-term, the vertex mass is generated dynamically by infinitesimally small, but nonzero, momenta. Implications for the renormalization of light-front Hamiltonians for fermions…
We calculate chiral rings of the N=2 vertex algebras constructed from the combinatorial data of toric mirror symmetry and show that they coincide with the description of stringy cohomology conjectured previously in a joint work with A. Mavlyutov.
We supplement the discussion of Moore and Reshetikhin and others by finding new semiclassical nonabelian vertex operators for the chiral, antichiral and nonchiral primary fields of WZW theory. These new nonabelian vertex operators are the natural generalization of the familiar abelian vertex operators: They involve only the representation matrices of Lie $g$, the currents of affine $(g \times g)$ and certain chiral and antichiral zero modes, and they reduce to the abelian vertex operators in the limit of abelian algebras. Using the new constructions, we also discuss semiclassical operator prod…
The non-renormalization theorems of chiral vertex functions are derived on the basis of an algebraic analysis. The property, that the interaction vertex is a second supersymmetry variation of a lower dimensional field monomial, is used to relate chiral Green functions to superficially convergent Green functions by extracting the two supersymmetry variations from an internal vertex and transforming them to derivatives acting on external legs. The analysis is valid in the massive as well as in the massless model and can be performed irrespective of properties of the superpotential at vanishing m…
We study the effect of a refined electron-photon vertex on the dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry in reduced quantum electrodynamics. We construct an educated {\em ansatz} for this vertex which satisfies the required discrete symmetries under parity, time reversal and charge conjugation operations. Furthermore, it reproduces its asymptotic perturbative limit in the weak coupling regime and ensures the massless electron propagator is multiplicatively renormalizable in its leading logarithmic expansion. Employing this vertex {\em ansatz}, we solve the gap equation to compute dynamically gener…
The infrared behavior of the quark-gluon vertex of quenched Landau gauge QCD is studied by analyzing its Dyson-Schwinger equation. Building on previously obtained results for Green functions in the Yang-Mills sector we analytically derive the existence of power-law infrared singularities for this vertex. We establish that dynamical chiral symmetry breaking leads to the self-consistent generation of components of the quark-gluon vertex forbidden when chiral symmetry is forced to stay in the Wigner-Weyl mode. In the latter case the running strong coupling assumes an infrared fixed point. If chir…
We study general perturbations of two-dimensional conformal field theories by holomorphic fields. It is shown that the genus one partition function is controlled by a contact term (pre-Lie) algebra given in terms of the operator product expansion. These models have applications to vertex operator algebras, two-dimensional QCD, topological strings, holomorphic anomaly equations and modular properties of generalized characters of chiral algebras such as the $W_{1+\infty}$ algebra, that is treated in detail.
In this paper, we construct various simple vertex superalgebras which are extensions of affine vertex algebras, by using abelian cocycle twists of representation categories of quantum groups. This solves the Creutzig and Gaiotto conjectures in the case of type ABC. If the twist is trivial, the resulting algebras correspond to chiral differential operators in the chiral case, and to WZW models in the non-chiral case.
We analyze correlation functions of Wilson loop observables and local vertex operators within the strong-coupling regime of the AdS/CFT correspondence. When the local operator corresponds to a light string state with finite conserved charges the correlation function can be evaluated in the semiclassical approximation of large string tension, where the contribution from the light vertex can be neglected. We consider the cases where the Wilson loops are described by two concentric surfaces and the local vertices are the superconformal chiral primary scalar or a singlet massive scalar operator.
We study $AdS_3 \times S^1 \times Y$ supersymmetric string theory backgrounds with Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz flux that are dual to ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal theories on the boundary. We classify all worldsheet vertex operators that correspond to space-time chiral primaries. We compute space-time chiral ring structure constants for operators in the zero spectral flow sector using the operator product expansion in the worldsheet theory. We find that the structure constants take a universal form that depends only on the topological data of the ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal theory on $Y$.
In this paper, we present a systematical account of the descending procedure from six-vertex model to the $N$-state chiral Potts model through fusion relations of $τ^{(j)}$-operators, following the works of Bazhanov-Stroganov and Baxter-Bazhanov-Perk. A careful analysis of the descending process leads to appearance of the high genus curve as rapidities' constraint for the chiral Potts models. Full symmetries of the rapidity curve are identified, so is its symmetry group structure. By normalized transfer matrices of the chiral Potts model, the $τ^{(2)}T$ relation can be reduced to functional eq…
No-go theorems on gauge-symmetry-deforming interactions of chiral p-forms are reviewed. We consider the explicit case of p=4, D=10 and show that the only symmetry-deforming consistent vertex for a system of one chiral 4-form and two 2-forms is the one that occurs in the type II B supergravity Lagrangian.
We examine the Onsager algebra symmetry of $τ^{(j)}$-matrices in the superintegrable chiral Potts model. The comparison of Onsager algebra symmetry of the chiral Potts model with the $sl_2$-loop algebra symmetry of six-vertex model at roots of unity is made from the aspect of functional relations using the $Q$-operator and fusion matrices. The discussion of Bethe ansatz for both models is conducted in a uniform manner through the evaluation parameters of their symmetry algebras.
The six-vertex model and its spin-$S$ descendants obtained from the fusion procedure are well-known lattice discretizations of the SU$(2)_k$ WZW models, with $k=2S$. It is shown that, in these models, it is possible to exhibit a local observable on the lattice that behaves as the chiral current $J^a(z)$ in the continuum limit. The observable is built out of generators of the su$(2)$ Lie algebra acting on a small (finite) number of lattice sites. The construction works also for the multi-critical quantum spin chains related to the vertex models, and is verified numerically for $S=1/2$ and $S=1$…
We construct a sheaf of N=2 vertex algebras naturally associated to any Poisson manifold. The relation of this sheaf to the chiral de Rham complex is discussed. We reprove the result about the existence of two commuting N = 2 superconformal structures on the space of sections of the chiral de Rham complex of a Calabi-Yau manifold, but now calculated in a manifest N=2 formalism. We discuss how the semi-classical limit of this sheaf of N=2 vertex algebras is related to the classical supersymmetric non-linear sigma model.
In this paper we consider the possibility of chiral (charge or spin density wave) symmetry breaking in graphene due to long-range Coulomb interaction by comparing the results of the Bethe-Salpeter and functional renormalization-group approaches. The former approach performs summation of ladder diagrams in the particle-hole channel, and reproduces the results of the Schwinger-Dyson approach for the critical interaction strength of the quantum phase transition. The renormalization-group approach combines the effect of different channels and allows to study the role of vertex corrections. The cri…
We give a functorial construction of the genus zero chiral algebras of class $\mathcal{S}$, that is, the vertex algebras corresponding to the theory of class $\mathcal{S}$ associated with genus zero pointed Riemann surfaces via the 4d/2d duality discovered by Beem, Lemos, Liendo, Peelaers, Rastelli and van Rees in physics. We show that there is a unique family of vertex algebras satisfying the required conditions and show that they are all simple and conformal. In fact, our construction works for any complex semisimple group G that is not necessarily simply laced. Furthermore, we show that the…
A non-perturbative construction of the 3-point fermion-boson vertex which obeys its Ward-Takahashi or Slavnov-Taylor identity, ensures the massless fermion and boson propagators transform according to their local gauge covariance relations, reproduces perturbation theory in the weak coupling regime and provides a gauge independent description for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB) and confinement has been a long-standing goal in physically relevant gauge theories such as quantum electrodynamics (QED) and quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In this paper, we demonstrate that the same simple an…
We construct a cubic field theory which provides all genus amplitudes of the topological A-model for all non-compact Calabi-Yau toric threefolds. The topology of a given Feynman diagram encodes the topology of a fixed Calabi-Yau, with Schwinger parameters playing the role of Kahler classes of Calabi-Yau. We interpret this result as an operatorial computation of the amplitudes in the B-model mirror which is the Kodaira-Spencer quantum theory. The only degree of freedom of this theory is an unconventional chiral scalar on a Riemann surface. In this setup we identify the B-branes on the mirror Ri…
We demonstrate that the $τ^{(j)}$-matrices in the superintegrable chiral Potts model possess the Onsager algebra symmetry for their degenerate eigenvalues. The Fabricius-McCoy comparison of functional relations of the eight-vertex model for roots of unity and the superintegrable chiral Potts model has been carefully analyzed by identifying equivalent terms in the corresponding equations, by which we extract the conjectured relation of $Q$-operators and all fusion matrices in the eight-vertex model corresponding to the $T\hat{T}$-relation in the chiral Potts model.
We present a quantitative analysis of chiral symmetry breaking in two-flavour continuum QCD in the quenched limit. The theory is set-up at perturbative momenta, where asymptotic freedom leads to precise results. The evolution of QCD towards the hadronic phase is achieved by means of dynamical hadronisation in the non-perturbative functional renormalisation group approach. We use a vertex expansion scheme based on gauge-invariant operators and discuss its convergence properties and the remaining systematic errors. In particular we present results for the quark propagator, the full tensor struct…
Within the framework of the Dyson-Schwinger equations in the axial gauge, we study the effect that non-perturbative glue has on the quark propagator. We show that Ward-Takahashi identities, combined with the requirement of matching perturbative QCD at high momentum transfer, guarantee the multiplicative renormalisability of the answer. Technically, the matching with perturbation theory is accomplished by the introduction of a transverse part to the quark-gluon vertex. We show that this transverse vertex is crucial for chiral symmetry breaking, and that massless solutions exist below a critical…
It is typical for a semi-infinite cohomology complex associated with a graded Lie algebra to occur as a vertex operator (or chiral) superalgebra where all the standard operators of cohomology theory, in particular the differential, are modes of vertex operators (fields). Although vertex operator superalgebras -with the inherent Virasoro action- are regarded as part of Conformal Field Theory (CFT), a VOSA may exhibit a square-zero operator (often, but not always, the semi-infinite cohomology differential) for which the Virasoro algebra acts trivially in the cohomology. Capable of shedding its C…
The coupled system of the quark-gluon vertex and quark propagator Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs) is investigated within Landau gauge QCD. The aim is to get a deeper insight into the mechanisms of quark confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and into a possible relation between these two phenomena. To this end an earlier study is extended by improving systematically on the truncations imposed on the quark-gluon vertex DSE. A clear infrared enhancement for all tensor structures of the quark-gluon vertex is obtained.
The gauge independence of the dynamical fermion mass generated through chiral symmetry breaking in QED in a strong, constant external magnetic field is critically examined. We show that the bare vertex approximation, in which the vertex corrections are ignored, is a consistent truncation of the Schwinger-Dyson equations in the lowest Landau level approximation. The dynamical fermion mass, obtained as the solution of the truncated Schwinger-Dyson equations evaluated on the fermion mass shell, is shown to be manifestly gauge independent. By establishing a direct correspondence between the trunca…
An argument is presented for a certain universality of finite size corrections in two dimensional gauge theories. In the abelian case a direct calculation is carried out for a particular chiral model. The analytical result confirms the above universality and that the 't Hooft vertex previously measured using the overlap smoothly approaches the correct continuum limit within statistical errors.
We show that the chiral partition function of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory on the sphere can be mapped to the partition function of the homogeneous six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions in the ferroelectric phase. A discrete matrix model description in both cases is given by the Meixner ensemble, leading to a representation in terms of a stochastic growth model. We show that the partition function is a particular case of the z-measure on the set of Young diagrams, yielding a unitary matrix model for chiral Yang-Mills theory on the sphere and the identification of the parti…
We extend the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model by introducing an effective four-quark vertex depending on Polyakov loop. The effective vertex generates entanglement interactions between Polyakov loop and chiral condensate. The new model is consistent with lattice QCD data at imaginary quark-number chemical potential and real and imaginary isospin chemical potentials, particularly on strong correlation between the chiral and deconfinement transitions and also on the quark-mass dependence of the order of the Roberge-Weiss endpoint predicted by lattice QCD very lately. We in…

We investigate the quark-gluon three-point correlation function within a one-loop computation performed in the Curci-Ferrari massive extension of the Faddeev-Popov gauge-fixed action. The mass term is used as a minimal way for taking into account the influence of the Gribov ambiguity. Our results, with renormalization-group improvement, are compared with lattice data. We show that the comparison is in general very satisfactory for the functions which are compatible with chiral symmetry, except for one. We argue that this may be due to large systematic errors {when extracting this function from…
