[Background] While the tensor interaction has been shown to significantly affect the nuclear structure of exotic nuclei, its influence on nuclear reactions has only recently been investigated. The primary reason for this neglect is the fact that most studies of nuclear dynamics do not include the tensor force at all in their models. Indeed, only a few Skyrme parametrizations consider the tensor interaction in parameter determination. With modern research facilities extending our ability to probe exotic nuclei, a correct description of nuclear dynamics and heavy-ion fusion is vital to both supporting and leading experimental efforts.
[Method] Fusion cross sections are calculated using ion-ion potentials generated by the fully microscopic density-constrained time-dependent Hartree-Fock (DC-TDHF) method with the complete Skyrme tensor interaction.
[Results] For light nuclei, the tensor force only slightly changes the sub-barrier fusion cross sections at very low energies. Heavier nuclei, however, begin to exhibit a substantial hindrance effect in the sub-barrier region. This effect is strongest in spin-unsaturated systems, though can manifest in other configurations as well. Static, ground state deformation effects of the tensor force can also affect cross sections by shifting the fusion barrier.
[Conclusions] The tensor interaction has a measurable effect on the fusion cross sections of nuclei spanning the nuclear chart. The effect comes from both static effects present in the ground state and dynamic processes arising from the time evolution of the system. This motivates the development of a modern Skyrme parameter set that includes all time-odd and tensor terms and that studies moving forward should include the tensor force to ensure a more robust and complete description of nuclei.
Existing data on near-barrier fusion excitation functions of medium and heavy nucleus-nucleus systems have been analyzed using a simple diffused barrier formula derived assuming the Gaussian shape of the barrier height distributions. Fusion cross section is obtained by folding the Gaussian barrier distribution with the classical expression for the fusion cross section for a fixed barrier. The energy dependence of the fusion cross section, thus obtained, provides good description to the existing data on near-barrier fusion and capture excitation functions for medium and heavy nucleus-nucleus sy…
The dependence of fusion cross section on the isotopic composition of colliding nuclei is analysed within the dinuclear system concept for compound nucleus formation. Probabilities of fusion and surviving probabilities, ingredients of the evaporation residue cross sections, depend decisively on the neutron numbers of the dinuclear system. Evaporation residue cross sections for the production of actinides and superheavy nuclei, listed in table form, are discussed and compared with existing experimental data. Neutron-rich radioactive projectiles are shown to lead to similar fusion cross sections…
We present a fully microscopic study of the $^{16}$O+$^{208}$Pb fusion using the density-constrained time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory. The calculated fusion cross-sections are in good agreement with the experimental data for the entire energy range indicating that the incorporation of dynamical effects is crucial in describing heavy-ion fusion.
Fusion reactions of neutron-halo nuclei are investigated theoretically with a three-body model. The time-dependent wave-packet method is used to solve the three-body Schrodinger equation. The halo neutron behaves as a spectator during the Coulomb dissociation process of the projectile. The fusion cross sections of 11Be-209Bi and 6He-238U are calculated and are compared with measurements. Our calculation indicates that the fusion cross section is slightly hindered by the presence of weakly bound neutrons.
Fusion reactions with a weakly bound projectile are studied using the double-folding model along with a repulsive interaction modifying term. Using this modified potential, including nuclear matter incompressibility effects, the fusion reaction cross sections and suppression parameters are calculated for 9Be +209Bi,208Pb,29Si and 27Al reactions. The results show that applying these effects at energies near the Coulomb barrier improves the agreement between the calculated and experimental cross sections, and modifies the mean values of the suppression parameter.
We discuss the applicability of the energy density formalism (EDF) for heavy-ion fusion reactions at sub-barrier energies. For this purpose, we calculate the fusion excitation function and the fusion barrier distribution for the reactions of $^{16}$O with $^{154,}$$^{144}$Sm,$^{186}$W and $^{208}$Pb with the coupled-channels method. We also discuss the effect of saturation property on the fusion cross section for the reaction between two $^{64}$Ni nuclei, in connection to the so called steep fall-off phenomenon of fusion cross sections at deep sub-barrier energies.
We study the relations between moments of fusion cross sections and averages of angular momentum. The role of the centrifugal barrier and the target deformation in determining the effective barrier radius are clarified. A simple method for extracting average angular momentum from fusion cross sections is demonstrated using numerical examples as well as actual data.
The total fusion cross sections for the fusion of weakly bound $^{9}$Be on $^{27}$Al and $^{64}$Zn targets at near and above the barrier have been calculated using one dimensional barrier penetration model, taking scattering potential as the sum of Coulomb and proximity potential and the calculated values are compared with experimental data. For the purpose of comparison of the fusion of weakly bound projectiles and strongly bound projectiles, the total fusion cross sections for the reaction of tightly bound nucleus $^{16}$O on $^{64}$Zn have also been computed using a similar procedure. The c…
$^{50}$Ti-induced fusion reactions to synthesize superheavy elements are studied systematically with the two-step model developed recently, where fusion process is divided into approaching phase and formation phase. Furthermore, the residue cross sections for different neutron evaporation channels are evaluated with the statistical evaporation model. In general, the calculated cross sections are much smaller than that of $^{48}$Ca-induced fusion reactions, but the results are within the detection capability of experimental facilities nowadays. The maximum calculated residue cross section for p…
Using the dinuclear system concept we present calculations of production cross sections for the heaviest nuclei. The obtained results are in a good agreement with the experimental data. The experimentally observed rapid fall-off of the cross sections of the cold fusion with increasing charge number $Z$ of the compound nucleus is explained. Optimal experimental conditions for the synthesis of the superheavy nuclei are suggested.
We propose a new method for evaluating incomplete and complete fusion cross sections separately using the Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels method. This method is applied to analysis of the deuteron induced reaction on a 7Li target up to 50 MeV of the deuteron incident energy. Effects of deuteron breakup on this reaction are explicitly taken into account. Results of the method are compared with those of the Glauber model, and the difference between the two is discussed. It is found that the energy dependence of the incomplete fusion cross sections obtained by the present calculation is al…
Based on the extended optical model approach in which the polarization potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts, simultaneous $χ^{2}$ analyses are performed for elastic scattering, DR, and fusion cross section data for the $^{9}$Be+$^{208}$Pb system at near-Coulomb-barrier energies. Similar $χ^{2}$ analyses are also performed by only taking into account the elastic scattering and fusion data as was previously done by the present authors, and the results are compared with those of the full analysis including the DR cross section data as well. We find that the analyses …
In this theoretical study, we establish an interrelationship between the nucleon-nucleon interaction potential and the nuclear fusion reaction cross-sections at low energies. The axially deformed self-consistent relativistic mean field with non-linear NL3$^*$ force is used to calculate the density distribution of the projectile and target nuclei for fusion. The Wong formula is used to estimate the fusion cross-section and barrier distribution from the nucleus-nucleus optical potential for Ni-based systems, which are known for fusion hindrance phenomena. The results of the application of the so…
This article summarizes recent progress in our understanding of the reaction mechanisms leading to the formation of superheavy nuclei in cold and hot fusion reactions. Calculations are done within the Fusion-by-Diffusion (FBD) model using the new nuclear data tables by Jachimowicz et al. [At. Data Nucl. Data Tables 138, 101393 (2021)]. The synthesis reaction is treated in a standard way as a three-step process (i.e., capture, fusion, and survival). Each reaction step is analyzed separately. Model calculations are compared with selected experimental data on capture, fissionlike and fusion cross…
A recent publication reports that heavy-ion fusion cross sections at extreme subbarrier energies show a continuous change of their logarithmic slope with decreasing energy, resulting in a much steeper excitation function compared with theoretical predictions. We show that the energy dependence of this slope is partly due to the asymmetric shape of the Coulomb barrier, that is its deviation from a harmonic shape. We also point out that the large low-energy slope is consistent with the surprisingly large surface diffusenesses required to fit recent high-precision fusion data.
Using different types of proximity potentials, we have examined the trend of variations of barrier characteristics (barrier height and its position) as well as fusion cross sections for 50 isotopic systems including various collisions of C, O, Mg, Si, S, Ca, Ar, Ti and Ni nuclei with $1\leq N/Z < 1.6$ condition for compound systems. The results of our studies reveal that the relationships between increase of barrier positions and decrease of barrier heights are both linear with increase of $N/Z$ ratio. Moreover, fusion cross sections also enhance linearly with increase of this ratio.
We investigate the proton-boron nuclear fusion cross sections under the influence of the intense linearly polarized monochromatic laser fields with high frequency. First, we rewrite the time-dependent Schrödinger equation using Kramers-Henneberger (KH) transformation which allows for shifting all time dependence of the problem into the potential function. Then, for the intense laser fields that satisfy the high frequency limit, the time-averaged scheme in the KH framework should be valid. We can use WKB approximation to evaluate Coulomb barrier penetrability and then calculate proton-boron nuc…
Based on an approach recently proposed by us, simultaneous $χ^{2}$-analyses are performed for elastic scattering, direct reaction (DR) and fusion cross sections data for the $^{6}$He+$^{209}$Bi system at near-Coulomb-barrier energies to determine the parameters of the polarization potential consisting of DR and fusion parts. We show that the data are well reproduced by the resultant potential, which also satisfies the proper dispersion relation. A discussion is given of the nature of the threshold anomaly seen in the potential.
we use the nuclear proximity potential obtained recently for the Skyrme nucleus-nucleus interaction in the semiclassical extended Thomas Fermi (ETF) approach using Skyrme energy density formalism (SEDF) under frozen-density (sudden-without-exchange) approximation, and $Φ$=0$^0$. This method allows the barrier modifications by using different Skyrme forces, since a different Skyrme force would mean different barrier characteristics, and possibly a different force for different reaction cross-section.
We investigate the influence of strong dichromatic laser fields (i.e. 1ω-2ω and 1ω-3ω) with high-frequency limit on the cross sections of deuteron-triton(DT) fusion in Kramers-Henneberger(KH) frame. We focus on the transitions of phase-dependent effects depending on a dimensionless quantity n_{d} , which equals the ratio of the quiver oscillation amplitude to the geometrical touching radius of the deuteron and triton as defined in our previous research. Theoretical calculations show that the angle-dependent as well as phase-dependent Coulomb barrier penetrabilities can be enhanced in dichromat…
We introduce a new microscopic approach to calculate the dependence of fusion barriers and cross-sections on isospin dynamics. The method is based on the time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory and the isoscalar and isovector properties of the energy density functional (EDF). The contribution to the fusion barriers originating from the isoscalar and isovector parts of the EDF is calculated. It is shown that for non-symmetric systems the isovector dynamics influence the sub-barrier fusion cross-sections. For most systems this results in an enhancement of the sub-barrier cross-sections, while for oth…
We discuss a model for the description of subbarrier fusion of heavy ions which takes into account the coupling to the low-energy surface vibrational states and to the few-nucleon transfer with arbitrary reaction Q-value. The fusion reactions ^{28,30}Si+^{58,62,64}Ni, ^{40}Ca+^{90,96}Zr, ^{28}S+^{94,100}Mo, ^{16,18,20,22,24}O+^{58}Ni and ^{28}Si+^{124,126,128,130,132}Sn are analyzed in detail. The model describes rather well the experimental fusion cross section and mean angular momentum for reactions between nuclei near the β-stability line. It is shown that these quantities are significantly…
A microscopic mean-field description of heavy ions fusion is performed in the framework of the Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory using a Skyrme interaction with the SLy4d parametrization. A good agreement with experiments is obtained on the position of the fusion barriers for various total masses, mass asymmetries and deformations. The excitation function of the 16O+208Pb is overestimated by about 16% above the barrier. The restriction to an independent particles state in the mean-field dynamics prevents the description of sub-barrier fusion. Effect of transfer on fusion is discussed.
A microscopic calculation of cross sections for fusion of oxygen isotopes $^{16}$O, $^{22}$O and $^{24}$O is presented. Fermionic Molecular Dynamics wave functions are used to describe the fully antisymmetrized and angular momentum projected nucleus-nucleus system. The same effective nucleon-nucleon interaction is used to determine the ground state properties of the nuclei as well as the nucleus-nucleus interaction. From the microscopic many-body wave function the corresponding wave function for the relative motion of two point-like nuclei is derived by a method proposed by Friedrich which lea…
It is the aim of this paper to discuss the impact of nuclear fusion on the EOS. This is a timely subject given the expected availability of increasingly exotic beams at rare isotope facilities\,\cite{balantekin2014}. In practice, we focus on $^{48}$Ca+$^{48}$Ca fusion. We employ three different approaches to calculate fusion cross-sections for a set of energy density functionals with systematically varying nuclear matter properties. Fusion calculations are performed using frozen densities, using a dynamic microscopic method based on density-constrained time-dependent Hartree-Fock (DC-TDHF) app…
The shell correction is proposed in the improved isospin dependent quantum molecular dynamics (ImIQMD) model, which plays an important role in heavy-ion fusion reactions near Coulomb barrier. By using the ImIQMD model, the static and dynamical fusion barriers, dynamical barrier distribution in the fusion reactions are analyzed systematically. The fusion and capture excitation functions for a series of reaction systems are calculated and compared with experimental data. It is found that the fusion cross sections for neutron-rich systems increase obviously, and the strong shell effects of two co…
We discuss the effect of surface energy coefficients as well as nuclear surface diffuseness in the proximity potential and ultimately in the fusion of heavy-ions. Here we employ different versions of surface energy coefficients. Our analysis reveals that these technical parameters can influence the fusion barriers by a significant amount. A best set of these parameters is also given that explains the experimental data nicely.
Based on the extended optical model approach in which the polarization potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts, simultaneous $χ^{2}$ analyses are performed for elastic scattering and fusion cross section data for the $^{6}$Li+$^{208}$Pb system at near-Coulomb-barrier energies. A folding potential is used as the bare potential. It is found that the real part of the resultant DR part of the polarization potential is repulsive, which is consistent with the results from the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) calculations and the normalization factors needed for…
[Background] Significant enhancement of sub-barrier fusion cross sections owing to neutron rearrangement with positive $Q$-values were found for many combinations of colliding nuclei. However several experimental results on fusion reactions were reported recently in which such enhancement has not been observed in spite of a possibility for neutron rearrangement with positive $Q$-values. [Purpose] We aim to clarify much better the mechanism of neutron rearrangement in sub-barrier fusion reactions to find the other requirements (beside positive $Q$-value) which favour (or prevent) sub-barrier fu…
We study heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies near the Coulomb barrier, in particular with neutron-rich radioactive ion beams. Dynamic microscopic calculations are carried out on a three-dimensional lattice using the Density-Constrained Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock (DC-TDHF) method. New results are presented for the $^{132}$Sn+$^{40}$Ca system which are compared to $^{132}$Sn+$^{48}$Ca studied earlier. Our theoretical fusion cross-sections agree surprisingly well with recent data measured at HRIBF. We also study the near- and sub-barrier fusion of $^{24,16}$O on $^{12}$C which is important to…
Describing fusion reactions between ^{16}O and ^{154}Dy and, between ^{16}O and ^{144}Sm by the $sd-$ and $sdf-$ interacting boson model, we show that heavy-ion fusion reactions are strongly affected by anharmonic properties of nuclear surface vibrations and nuclear shape, and thus provide a powerful method to study details of nuclear structure and dynamics.
Based on the extended optical model with the double folding potential, in which the polarization potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts, simultaneous $χ^{2}$ analyses are performed of elastic scattering and fusion cross section data for the $^{9}$Be+$^{28}$Si, $^{144}$Sm, and $^{208}$Pb systems at near-Coulomb-barrier energies. We find that the real part of the resultant DR part of the polarization potential is systematically repulsive for all the targets considered, which is consistent with the results deduced from the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) c…
The heavy-ion fusion reactions induced by neutron-rich nuclei are investigated with the improved quantum molecular dynamics (ImQMD) model. With a subtle consideration of the neutron skin thickness of nuclei and the symmetry potential, the stability of nuclei and the fusion excitation functions of heavy-ion fusion reactions $^{16}$O+$^{76}$Ge, $^{16}$O+$^{154}$Sm, $^{40}$Ca+$^{96}$Zr and $^{132}$Sn+$^{40}$Ca are systematically studied. The fusion cross sections of these reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier can be well reproduced by using the ImQMD model. The corresponding slope para…
Simultaneous $χ^{2}$ analyses are performed for elastic scattering and fusion cross section data for the $^{12}$C+$^{208}$Pb system at near-Coulomb-barrier energies by using the extended optical model approach in which the polarization potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts. Use is made of the double folding potential as a bare potential. It is found that the experimental elastic scattering and fusion data are well reproduced without introducing any normalization factor for the double folding potential and also that both DR and fusion parts of the polarization poten…
The fusion cross sections from well above barrier to extreme sub-barrier energies have been analysed using the energy (E) and angular momentum (L) dependent barrier penetration model ({\small{ELDBPM}}). From this analysis, the adiabatic limits of fusion barriers have been determined for a wide range of heavy ion systems. The empirical prescription of Wilzynska and Wilzynski has been used with modified radius parameter and surface tension coefficient values consistent with the parameterization of the nuclear masses. The adiabatic fusion barriers calculated from this prescription are in good agr…
In their article [Phys.\ Rev.\ C {\bf 100}, 064610 (2019)], Lv, Duan, and Liu study the enhancement of deuterium-tritium fusion reactions by the electromagnetic field of an x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL). While we support the general idea (which was put forward earlier in our rapid communication [Phys.\ Rev.\ C {\bf 100}, 041601(R) (2019)]), we find that the time-averaged potential approximation used by Lv, Duan, and Liu is not justified in this regime and does not take into account important effects. Due to those effects, the enhancement mechanism may actually be more efficient than predict…
The fusion probability in "hot" fusion reactions leading to the synthesis of super-heavy nuclei is investigated systematically. The quasi-fission barrier influences the formation of the super-heavy nucleus around the "island of stability" in addition to the shell correction. Based on the quasi-fission barrier height obtained with the Skyrme energy-density functional, we propose an analytical expression for the description of the fusion probability, with which the measured evaporation residual cross sections can be reproduced acceptably well. Simultaneously, some special fusion reactions for sy…
We discuss the effects of coupling of the relative motion to nuclear collective excitations which have a finite lifetime on heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies near and below the Coulomb barrier. Both spreading and escape widths are explicitly taken into account in the exit doorway model. The coupled-channels equations are numerically solved to show that the finite resonance width always hinders fusion cross sections at subbarrier energies irrespective of the relative importance between the spreading and the escape widths. We also show that the structure of fusion barrier distribution is sm…
Fusion - fission probabilities in the synthesis of heaviest elements are discussed in the context of the latest experimental reports. Cross sections for superheavy nuclei are evaluated using "Fusion by Diffusion" (FBD) model. Predictive power of this approach is shown for experimentally known Lv, Og isotopes and predictions given for Z=119,120. Ground state and saddle point properties as: masses, shell corrections, pairing energies and deformations necessary for cross section estimations are calculated systematically within the multidimensional microscopic - macroscopic method based on the def…
Couplings between relative motion and internal structures are known to affect fusion barriers by dynamically modifying the densities of the colliding nuclei. The effect is expected to be stronger at energies near the barrier top, where changes in density have longer time to develop than at higher energies. Quantitatively, modern TDHF calculations are able to predict realistic fusion thresholds. However, the evolution of the potential barrier with bombarding energy remains to be confronted with the experimental data. The aim is to find signatures of the energy dependence of the barrier by compa…
In heavy-ion fusion reactions involving a well deformed nucleus, one often assumes that the orientation of the target nucleus does not change during the reaction. We discuss the accuracy of this procedure by analyzing the excitation function of the fusion cross section and the fusion barrier distribution in the reactions of $^{154}$Sm target with various projectiles ranging from $^{12}$C to $^{40}$Ar. It is shown that the approximation gradually looses its accuracy with increasing charge product of the projectile and target nuclei because of the effects of finite excitation energy of the targe…
The vast knowledge of strong influence of quadrupole deformation $β_2$ of colliding nuclei on heavy-ion subbarrier fusion reactions inspires a desire to quest the sensitivity of fusion dynamics to higher order deformations, such as $β_4$ and $β_6$ deformations. However, such studies have rarely been carried out, especially for deformation of projectile nuclei. In this article, we investigated the role of $β_4$ of the projectile nucleus in fusion of the $^{28}$Si + $^{92}$Zr system. We demonstrated that the fusion barrier distribution is sensitive to the sign and the value of the $β_4$ paramete…
In recent several years, the tensor force, one of the most important components of the nucleon-nucleon force, has been implemented in time-dependent density functional theories and it has been found to influence many aspects of low-energy heavy-ion reactions, such as dissipation dynamics, sub-barrier fusions, low-lying vibration states of colliding partners. Especially, the effects of tensor force on fusion reactions have been investigated from the internuclear potential to fusion cross sections systematically. In this work we present a mini review on the recent progresses on this topic. Consi…
In order to describe the fusion of two very heavy nuclei at near barrier energies, a generalized Langevin approach is proposed, which incorporates the quantum statistical fluctuations in accordance with the fluctuation and dissipation theorem. It is illustrated that the quantum statistical effects introduce an enhancement of the formation of compound nucleus, though the quantum enhancement is somewhat less pronounced as indicated in the previous calculations.
We propose a novel extension of the standard coupled-channels framework for heavy-ion reactions in order to analyze fusion reactions at deep subbarrier incident energies. This extension simulates a smooth transition between the diabatic two-body and the adiabatic one-body states. To this end, we damp gradually the off-diagonal part of the coupling potential, for which the position of the onset of the damping varies for each eigen channel. We show that this model accounts well for the steep falloff of the fusion cross sections for the $^{16}$O+$^{208}$Pb, $^{64}$Ni+$^{64}$Ni, and $^{58}$Ni+$^{5…
We discuss the effects of multi-phonon excitations on heavy-ion fusion reactions at energies near and below the Coulomb barrier, focusing especially on the role of anharmonicities. We carry out a systematic study of those effects on the excitation function of the fusion cross section and on the fusion barrier distribution, by using the vibrational limit of the interacting boson model. We also analyze the recently measured high-precision data of the $^{16}$O + $^{148}$Sm fusion reaction with this model and discuss the anharmonic properties of the quadrupole as well as the octupole vibrations in…
Based on precise Coulomb wave functions (CWFs), we attempt to calculate the fusion cross sections of light nuclei in a complex spherical square-well nuclear potential (i.e., optical potential model). Comparing with experimental benchmark cross section data, we can calibrate optical potential parameters associated with D+D, D+T, D+3He, p+D, p+6Li and p+7Li fusion reactions. Surprisingly, we find that our calculated optical potential parameters are quite different from those of many previous results (e.g., Phys. Rev. C. 61 (2000) 024610, Nucl. Phys. A 986 (2019) 98, etc.), in which approximate C…
Present theoretical investigations aim to explore the fusion characteristics of various isotopes of Z=120 within the relativistic mean-field (RMF) formalism. We predict the most suitable projectile-target combination for the synthesis of element Z=120. The microscopic nucleon-nucleon R3Y interaction and the RMF density distributions for targets and projectiles are used to calculate the nuclear interaction potential using the double folding approach. 17 different projectile-target combinations that allow a high $N$/$Z$ ratio are considered in the present analysis to calculate the capture and/or…
By using a suitable set of the surface energy coefficient, nuclear radius, and universal function, the original proximity potential 1977 is modified. The overestimate of the data by 4 % reported in the literature is significantly reduced. Our modified proximity potential reproduces the experimental data nicely compared to its older versions.
The 12C+12C sub-barrier fusion cross section is calculated within the framework of a Time Dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) based classical model using the Feynman Path Integral Method. The modified astrophysical S*-factor is compared to direct and indirect experimental results. A good agreement with the direct data is found. In the lower energy region, where recent analyses of experimental data obtained with the Trojan Horse Method (THM) lead to contrasting results, the model predicts an S* factor half way between those results. Low energy resonances revealed in the THM data are added to the calc…
The production of mesons in ultra-peripheral collisions of relativistic heavy ions is re-analyzed using a projection technique to calculate the amplitudes for the appropriate Feynman diagrams. The virtuality of the exchanged photons is fully accounted for in this approach. In the case of two-photon fusion, it is explicitly shown that the inclusion of nuclear form factors validates the equivalent photon approximation. However, this does not apply to three-photon fusion cross sections. The cross section of J/ψproduction in ultra-peripheral collisions at RHIC and LHC are shown to be much smaller …
Fusion cross sections of light nuclei are calculated by a complex potential and taking into account of conservation of angular momentum and parity. The nuclear potential is assumed to be as simple as a spherical complex square well with a rigid core. Then, the nuclear phase shift is extracted from continuity condition of inverse of the logarithmic derivative of the wave functions as a complex quantity. The quantum tunneling probability and cross section are obtained via real and complex components of nuclear phase shift. The obtained results for the two most important light nuclei reactions, $…
We provide a microscopic description of the fusion reactions between $^{40,48}$Ca and $^{78}$Ni. The internuclear potentials are obtained using the density-constrained (DC) time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) approach and fusion cross sections are calculated via the incoming wave boundary condition method. By performing DC-TDHF calculations at several selected incident energies, the internuclear potentials for both systems are obtained and the energy-dependence of fusion barrier are revealed. The influence of tensor force on internuclear potentials of $^{48}\mathrm{Ca}+{}^{78}\mathrm{Ni}$ is mo…
Cross-section and neutron-emission data from heavy-ion fusion-fission reactions are consistent with a Kramers-modified statistical model which takes into account the collective motion of the system about the ground state; the temperature dependence of the location of fission transition points; and the orientation degree of freedom. We see no evidence to suggest that the nuclear viscosity departs from the surface-plus-window dissipation model. The strong increase in the nuclear viscosity above a temperature of ~1 MeV deduced by others is an artifact generated by an inadequate fission model.
We investigate the influence of the neutron halo and the breakup channel in 6He + 238U fusion at near-barrier energies. To include static effects of the 2n-halo in 6He nuclei, we use a single-folding potential obtained from an appropriate nucleon-238U interaction and a realistic 6He density. Dynamical effects arising from the breakup process are then included through coupled-channel calculations. These calculations suggest that static effects dominate the cross section at energies above the Coulomb barrier, while the sub-barrier fusion cross section appears to be determined by coupling to the …
We outline a formalism to carry out TDHF calculations of fusion cross sections for spherical + deformed nuclei. The procedure incorporates the dynamic alignment of the deformed nucleus into the calculation of the fusion cross section. The alignment results from multiple E2/E4 Coulomb excitation of the ground state rotational band. Implications for TDHF fusion calculations are discussed. TDHF calculations are done in an unrestricted three-dimensional geometry using modern Skyrme force parametrizations.
