A recent letter [1] investigated the effects of deuteron polarizability in the mu D atom. The importance of understanding this atom has been heightened because of the possible light it could shed on the proton radius puzzle. Here we confirm, clarify, and emphasize the significance of the result [1] that the effects of the third Zemach moment are canceled by part of the deuteron polarizability effects. 1. K. Thermonuclear fusion and generalized Gamow penetrability factor in intense laser fields

A theoretical study on thermonuclear fusion including deuterium-tritium (D-T) fusion and D-$^{3}$He fusion in intense laser fields has been shown in this article. With the laser fields expected to be available in the near future, some quantitative results for the laser-induced modifications to the cross-sections are given. It is reported that the cross-sections are more sensitive to the external laser fields at the lower energies. An explicit generalized form of the Gamow penetrability factor is given for the predictions of the laser-induced effects for some other similar nuclear processes.

Short-Range Correlations and the Nuclear EMC Effect in Deuterium and Helium-3

The EMC effect in deuterium and helium-3 is studied using a convolution formalism that allows isolating the impact of high-momentum nucleons in short-ranged correlated (SRC) pairs. We assume that the modification of the structure function of bound nucleons is given by a universal (i.e. nucleus independent) function of their virtuality, and find that the effect of such modifications is dominated by nucleons in SRC pairs. Dynamically assisted nuclear fusion

We consider the prototypical deuterium-tritium fusion reaction. At intermediate initial kinetic energies (in the keV regime), a major bottle-neck of this reaction is the Coulomb barrier between the nuclei, which is overcome by tunneling. Here, we study whether the tunneling probability can be enhanced by an additional electromagnetic field, such as an x-ray free electron laser (XFEL). We find that this dynamical assistance should be feasible with present-day or near future technology.

Simulation of Light Antinucleus-Nucleus Interactions

Creations of light anti-nuclei (anti-deuterium, anti-tritium, anti-He3 and anti-He4) are observed by collaborations at the LHC and RHIC accelerators. Some cosmic ray experiments are aimed to find the anti-nuclei in cosmic rays. To support the experimental studies of the anti-nuclei a Monte Carlo simulation of anti-nuclei interactions with matter is implemented in the Geant4 toolkit. The implementation combines practically all known theoretical approaches to the problem of antinucleon-nucleon interactions.
