In this note, we study the ill-posedness of nonlinear wave equations (NLW). Namely, we show that NLW experiences norm inflation at every initial data in negative Sobolev spaces. This result covers a gap left open in a paper of Christ, Colliander, and Tao (2003) and extends the result by Oh, Tzvetkov, and the second author (2019) to non-cubic integer nonlinearities. In particular, for some low dimensional cases, we obtain norm inflation above the scaling critical regularity. We also prove ill-posedness for NLW, via norm inflation at general initial data, in negative regularity Fourier-Lebesgue and Fourier-amalgam spaces.
In this note, we consider the ill-posedness issue for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In particular, we prove norm inflation based at every initial condition in negative Sobolev spaces below or at the scaling critical regularity.
We consider semilinear Schrödinger equations with nonlinearity that is a polynomial in the unknown function and its complex conjugate, on $\mathbb{R}^d$ or on the torus. Norm inflation (ill-posedness) of the associated initial value problem is proved in Sobolev spaces of negative indices. To this end, we apply the argument of Iwabuchi and Ogawa (2012), who treated quadratic nonlinearities. This method can be applied whether the spatial domain is non-periodic or periodic and whether the nonlinearity is gauge/scale-invariant or not.
We demonstrate that the solutions to the Cauchy problem for the three dimensional incompressible magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) system can develop diferent types of norm inflations in $\dot{B}_{\infty}^{-1, \infty}$. Particularly the magnetic field can develop norm inflation in short time even when the velocity remains small and vice verse. Efforts are made to present a very expository development of the inginious construction of Bourgain and Pavlović for Navier-Stokes equation.
We consider the three-dimensional incompressible magneto-hydrodynamic system with fractional powers of the Laplacian. We discover a wide range of spaces where the norm inflation occurs and hence small initial data results are out of reach. The norm inflation occurs not only in scaling invariant (critical) spaces, but also in supercritical, and, surprisingly, subcritical ones.

We demonstrate norm inflation for nonlinear nonlocal equations, which extend the Korteweg-de Vries equation to permit fractional dispersion, in the periodic and non-periodic settings. That is, an initial datum is smooth and arbitrarily small in a Sobolev space, but the solution becomes arbitrarily large in the Sobolev space after an arbitrarily short time.
We consider nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equations in Fourier-Lebesgue and modulation spaces involving negative regularity. The equations are posed on the whole space, and involve a smooth power nonlinearity. We prove two types of norm inflation results. We first establish norm inflation results below the expected critical regularities. We then prove norm inflation with infinite loss of regularity under less general assumptions. To do so, we recast the theory of multiphase weakly nonlinear geometric optics for nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equations in a general abstract functional setting.
We consider ill-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the generalized Boussinesq and Kawahara equations. We prove norm inflation with general initial data, an improvement over the ill-posedness results by Geba et al., Nonlinear Anal. 95 (2014), 404-413 for the generalized Boussinesq equations and by Kato, Adv. Differential Equations 16 (2011), no. 3-4, 257-287 for the Kawahara equation.
In this paper, we prove that the Cauchy problem for the Fornberg-Whitham equation is not locally well-posed in $B^s_{p,r}(\R)$ with $(s,p,r)\in (1,1+\frac1p)\times[2,\infty)\times [1,\infty]$ or $(s,p,r)\in \{1\}\times[2,\infty)\times [1,2]$ by showing norm inflation phenomena of the solution for some special initial data.
The Cauchy problem for the classical Zakharov system is shown to be ill-posed in the sense of norm inflation in a range of Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{R}^d)\times H^l(\mathbb{R}^d)$ for all dimensions $d$. This proves several results on well-posedness, which includes existence of solutions, uniqueness and continuous dependence on the initial data, to be sharp up to endpoints.
Considered here is the periodic initial-value probem for the regularized long-wave (BBM) equation \[u_t+u_x+uu_x-u_{xxt}=0.\] Adding to previous work in the literature, it is shown here that for any $s < 0$, there is smooth initial data that is small in the $L_2$-based Sobolev spaces $H^s$, but the solution emanating from it becomes arbitrarily large in arbitrarily small time. This so called {\it norm inflation} result has as a consequence the previously determined conclusion that this problem is ill-posed in these negative-norm spaces.
We prove the norm inflation phenomena for the Boussinesq system on $\mathbb T^3$. For arbitrarily small initial data $(u_0,ρ_0)$ in the negative-order Besov spaces $\dot{B}^{-1}_{\infty, \infty} \times \dot{B}^{-1}_{\infty, \infty}$, the solution can become arbitrarily large in a short time. Such largeness can be detected in $ρ$ in Besov spaces of any negative order: $\dot{B}^{-s}_{\infty, \infty}$ for any $s>0$. Notice that our initial data space is scaling critical for $u$ and is scaling subcritical for $ρ$.
In this paper we consider Schr{ö}dinger equations with nonlinearities of odd order 2$σ$ + 1 on T^d. We prove that for $σ$d$\ge$2, they are strongly illposed in the Sobolev space H^s for any s \textless{} 0, exhibiting norm-inflation with infinite loss of regularity. In the case of the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation and its renormalized version we prove such a result for H^s with s \textless{} --2/3.
In this note, we study the ill-posedness problem for the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation (DNLS) in the one-dimensional setting. More precisely, by using a ternary-quinary tree expansion of the Duhamel formula we prove norm inflation in Sobolev spaces below the (scaling) critical regularity for the gauged DNLS. This ill-posedness result is sharp since DNLS is known to be globally well-posed in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. The main novelty of our approach is to control the derivative loss from the cubic nonlinearity by the quintic nonlinearity with carefully chosen initial data.
We study the strong ill-posedness (norm inflation with infinite loss of regularity) for the nonlinear wave equation at every initial data in Wiener amalgam and Fourier amalgam spaces with negative regularity. In particular these spaces contain Fourier-Lebesgue, Sobolev and some modulation spaces. The equations are posed on $\mathbb R^d$ and on torus $\mathbb T^d$ and involve a smooth power nonlinearity. Our results are sharp with respect to well-posedness results of Bényi and Okoudjou (2009) and Cordero and Nicola (2009) in the Wiener amalgam and modulation space cases. In particular, we also …
We consider the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation with a fractional power $α\in[1,\infty)$ of the Laplacian in the three dimensional case. We prove the existence of a smooth solution with arbitrarily small in $\dot{B}_{\infty,p}^{-α}$ ($2<p \leq \infty$) initial data that becomes arbitrarily large in $\dot{B}_{\infty,\infty}^{-s}$ for all $s> 0$ in arbitrarily small time. This extends the result of Bourgain and Pavlović for the classical Navier-Stokes equation which utilizes the fact that the energy transfer to low modes increases norms with negative smoothness indexes. It is remarkable th…

We consider Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation of the form $$ u_t+u_x+uu_x-u_{xxt}=0, \quad (x, t)\in \mathcal{M}\times \mathbb R $$ where $\mathcal{M}= \mathbb T$ or $\mathbb R.$ We establish norm inflation (NI) with infinite loss of regularity at general initial data in Fourier amalgam and Wiener amalgam spaces with negative regularity. This strengthen several known NI results at zero initial data in $H^s(\mathbb T)$ established by Bona-Dai (2017) and ill-posedness result established by Bona-Tzvetkov (2008) and Panthee (2011) in $H^s(\mathbb R).$ Our result is sharp with respect to local we…
We construct an example showing that the solution map of the Euler equations is not continuous in the Hölder space from $C^{1,α}$ to $L^\infty_tC^{1,α}_x$ for any $0<α<1$. On the other hand we show that it is continuous when restricted to the little Hölder subspace $c^{1,α}$. We apply the latter to prove an ill-posedness result for solutions of the vorticity equations in Besov spaces near the critical space $B^1_{2,1}$. As a consequence we show that a sequence of best constants of the Sobolev embedding theorem near the critical function space is not continuous.
In this work we are interested in the well-posedness issues for the initial value problem associated with a higher order water wave model posed on a pe\-rio\-dic domain $\mathbb{T}$. We derive some multilinear estimates and use them in the contraction mapping argument to prove local well-posedness for initial data in the periodic Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, $s\geq 1$. With some restriction on the parameters appeared in the model, we use the conserved quantity to obtain global well-posedness for given data with Sobolev regularity $s\geq 2$. Also, we use splitting argument to improve the gl…
Positive-regularity norm inflation for the 3D hypodissipative Navier--Stokes equations

Norm inflation implies certain discontinuous dependence of the solution on the initial value. The well-posedness of the mild solution means the existence and uniqueness of the fixed points of the corresponding integral equation. For ${\rm BMO}^{-1}$, Auscher-Dubois-Tchamitchian proved that Koch-Tataru's solution is stable. In this paper, we construct a non-Gauss flow function to show that, for classic Navier-Stokes equations, wellposedness and norm inflation may have no conflict and stability may have meaning different to $L^{\infty}(({\rm BMO}^{-1})^{n})$.
When a function belonging to a fractional-order Sobolev space is supported in a proper subset of the Lipschitz domain on which the Sobolev space is defined, how is its Sobolev norm as a function on the smaller set compared to its norm on the whole domain? On what do the comparison constants depend on? Do different norms behave differently? This article addresses these issues. We prove some inequalities and disprove some misconceptions by counter-examples.
In this article we show that the Euler equations, when linearized around a low frequency perturbation to Couette flow, exhibit norm inflation in Gevrey-type spaces as time tends to infinity. Thus, echo chains are shown to be a (secondary) linear instability mechanism. Furthermore, we develop a more precise analysis of cancellations in the resonance mechanism, which yields a modified exponent in the high frequency regime. In addition it allows us to remove a logarithmic constraint on the perturbations present in prior works by Bedrossian, Deng and Masmoudi and to construct solutions which are i…
We provide answers to some questions raised in a recent work by H. Brezis, J. Van Schaftingen and Po-Lam Yung concerning the Gagliardo semi-norm $|u|_{W^{s,q}}$ computed at $s = 1$, when the strong $L^q$ is replaced by weak $L^q$. In particular, we address generalization of their results for a general domain and non-smooth functions.
