We derive a power series representation of an arbitrary electromagnetic field near some axis through the coaxial field components on the axis. The obtained equations are compared with Fourier-Bessel series approach and verified by several examples. It is shown that for each azimuthal mode we need only two real functions on the axis in order to describe the field in a source free region near to it. The representation of dipole mode in a superconducting radio-frequency gun is analyzed.

Merlin++ is a feature-full library with focus on long-term tracking studies. A user may simulate distributions of protons or electrons in either single particle or sliced macro-particle bunches. The tracking code includes both straight and curvilinear coordinate systems allowi…
An electron lens is planned for the Fermilab Integrable Optics Test Accelerator as a nonlinear element for integrable dynamics, as an electron cooler, and as an electron trap to study space-charge compensation in rings. We present the main design principles and constraints for nonlinear integrable optics. A magnetic configuration of the solenoids and of the toroidal section is laid out. Single-particle tracking is used to optimize the electron path. Electron beam dynamics at high intensity is calculated with a particle-in-cell code to estimate current limits, profile distortions, and the effec…
The McMillan system is a novel method to increase the tune spread of a beam without decreasing its dynamic aperture due to the systems integrability. While the ideal system is based on an infinitely thin kick, the physical design requires a thick electron lens, including a solenoid. Particle transport through the lens is difficult to simulate due to the nature of the force on the circulating beam. This paper demonstrates accurate simulation of a thick McMillan lens in a solenoid using symplectic integrators derived from Yoshidas method.
Beam Delivery Simulation (BDSIM) is a program that simulates the passage of particles in a particle accelerator. It uses a suite of standard high energy physics codes (Geant4, ROOT and CLHEP) to create a computational model of a particle accelerator that combines accurate accelerator tracking routines with all of the physics processes of particles in Geant4. This unique combination permits radiation and detector background simulations in accelerators where both accurate tracking of all particles is required over long range or over many revolutions of a circular machine, as well as interaction …
Accurate spin tracking is a valuable tool for understanding spin dynamics in particle accelerators and can help improve the performance of an accelerator. In this paper, we present a detailed discussion of the integrators in the spin tracking code gpuSpinTrack. We have implemented orbital integrators based on drift-kick, bend-kick, and matrix-kick splits. On top of the orbital integrators, we have implemented various integrators for the spin motion. These integrators use quaternions and Romberg quadratures to accelerate both the computation and the convergence of spin rotations. We evaluate th…
Symplectic tracking is important in accelerator beam dynamics simulation. So far, to the best of our knowledge, there is no self-consistent symplectic space-charge tracking model available in the accelerator community. In this paper, we present a two-dimensional and a three-dimensional symplectic multi-particle spectral model for space-charge tracking simulation. This model includes both the effect from external fields and the effect of self-consistent space-charge fields using a split-operator method. Such a model preserves the phase space structure and shows much less numerical emittance gro…
The demands on performance of advanced linear accelerator based facilities strongly depend on the quality of the particle beams produced by such machines. Indeed, state-of-the-art applications in photon production and high-energy physics colliders require to use very high brightness electron beams, implying the coexistence of high peak currents and small transverse emittances. In such systems, the nominal phase-space density may be diluted by the presence of self-induced electromagnetic fields, causing interaction among charged particles through space charge forces and the excitation of wakefi…
Proposed methods for measuring the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the proton use an intense, polarized proton beam stored in an all-electric storage ring "trap". At the "magic" kinetic energy of 232.792 MeV, proton spins are "frozen", for example always parallel to the instantaneous particle momentum. This paper describes an accelerator simulation code, ETEAPOT, a new component of the Unified Accelerator Libraries (UAL), to be used for long term tracking of particle orbits and spins in electric bend accelerators, in order to simulate EDM storage ring experiments. Though qualitatively much lik…
Axial-symmetric magnetic field is often used in focusing of particle beams. Most existing ion Low Energy Beam Transport lines are based on solenoid focusing. Modern accelerator projects utilize superconducting solenoids in combination with superconducting accelerating cavities for acceleration of high-intensity particle beams. Present paper discusses conditions for matched beam in axial-symmetric magnetic field. Analysis allows us to minimize power consumption of solenoids and beam emittance growth due to nonlinear space charge, lens aberrations, and maximize acceptance of the channel. Express…
We present the results of experimental studies on the transverse and longitudinal dynamics of a single electron in the IOTA storage ring. IOTA is a flexible machine dedicated to beam physics experiments with electrons and protons. A method was developed to reliably inject and circulate a controlled number of electrons in the ring. A key beam diagnostic system is the set of sensitive high-resolution digital cameras for the detection of synchrotron light emitted by the electrons. With 60-130 electrons in the machine, we measured beam lifetime and derived an absolute calibration of the optical sy…
Beam-driven collinear wakefield accelerators (CWAs) that operate by using slow-wave structures or plasmas hold great promise toward reducing the size of contemporary accelerators. Sustainable acceleration of charged particles to high energies in the CWA relies on using field-generating relativistic electron bunches with a highly asymmetric peak current profile and a large energy chirp. A new approach to obtaining such bunches has been proposed and illustrated with the accelerator design supported by particle tracking simulations. It has been shown that the required particle distribution in the…
For any storage ring-based large-scale scientific facility, one of the most important performance parameters is the dynamic aperture (DA), which measures the motion stability of charged particles in a global manner. To date, long-term tracking-based simulation is regarded as the most reliable method to calculate DA. However, numerical tracking may become a significant issue, especially when lots of candidate designs of a storage ring need to be evaluated. In this paper, we present a novel machine learning-based method, which can reduce the computation cost of DA tracking by approximately one o…
Recent progress in particle accelerator tracking has shown that the field representation is one of the major limits of the prediction accuracy especially for machines, whose aperture is fully filled by the beam and thus higher the artefacts created by higher order modes have to be thoroughly understood. The standard tool for field presentation today are cylindrical circular multipoles due to their straight forward correspondence to the Cartesian coordinates. In this paper we extend the standard approach to other coordinate systems, show how these can be measured next to their realisation in me…
The study of beam transport is of central importance to the design and performance assessment of modern particle accelerators. In this paper, we benchmark two contemporary codes, DIMAD and BDSIM, the latter being a relatively new tracking code built within the framework of GEANT4. We consider both the 20 mrad and 2 mrad extraction lines of the 500 GeV International Linear Collider (ILC) and we perform particle tracking studies of heavily disrupted post-collision electron beams. We find that the two codes give an almost equivalent description of the beam transport.
In accelerator and plasma physics it is accepted that there is no need to solve the dynamical equations for particles in covariant form, i.e. by using the coordinate-independent proper time to parameterize particle world-lines in space-time: to describe dynamics in the laboratory frame, there is no need to use the laws of relativistic kinematics. It is sufficient to account for the relativistic dependence of particles momenta on the velocity in the second Newton's law. Then, the coupling of fields and particles is based on the use of result from particle dynamics treated according to Newton's …
The attainable transformer ratio in plasma accelerators is limited by instabilities. Using three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we demonstrate that these can be controlled using a hollow plasma channel with a co-axial plasma filament. The driver scatters electrons from the filament, and the slow pinch of the ions leads to a strong chirp of the effective betatron frequency, preventing beam breakup. We demonstrate the monoenergetic acceleration of an electron bunch to 20 GeV over 4.4 m, achieving a transformer ratio of 10, an energy efficiency of 40% and an emittance of 1.8 um.
Particle acceleration in microstructures driven by ultrafast solid state lasers is a rapidly evolving area of advanced accelerator research, leading to a variety of concepts based on planar-symmetric dielectric gratings, hollow core fibers, photonic crystals, and plasmonic meta-surfaces. This approach leverages well-established industrial fabrication capabilities and the commercial availability of tabletop lasers to reduce cost, with demonstrated axial accelerating fields in the GV/m range. Wide-ranging international efforts have significantly improved understanding of gradient limits, structu…
An alternative representation for the vector potential of the nonlinear magnetic insert for the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA), first described in Sec. V.A. of the paper of Danilov and Nagaitsev, is determined from first principles using standard complex variable methods. In particular, it is shown that the coupled system consisting of the 2D Laplace equation and the Bertrand-Darboux equation is equivalent to a single ordinary differential equation in the complex plane, and a simple solution is constructed. The results are consistent with the paper of Danilov and Nagaitsev, and this…
We present a general concept to accelerate non-relativistic charged particles. Our concept employs an adiabatically-tapered dielectric-lined waveguide which supports accelerating phase velocities for synchronous acceleration. We propose an ansatz for the transient field equations, show it satisfies Maxwell's equations under an adiabatic approximation and find excellent agreement with a finite-difference time-domain computer simulation. The fields were implemented into the particle-tracking program {\sc astra} and we present beam dynamics results for an accelerating field with a 1-mm-wavelength…
We discuss the level of natural shot noise in a proton bunch-driven plasma accelerator. The required seeding for the plasma wake field must be larger than the cumulative shot noise. This is the necessary condition for the axial symmetry of the generated wake and the acceleration quality. We develop an analytical theory of the noise field and compare it with multi-dimensional simulations. It appears that the natural noise wake field generated in plasma by the available at CERN super-protons-synchrotron (SPS) bunches is very low, at the level of a few 10 kV/m. This fortunate fact eases the requi…
The characterization of plasma wakefield acceleration experiments using emitted photons from betatron radiation requires numerical models in support of instrumentation of single-shot, double-differential angular-energy spectra. Precision characterization for relevant experiments necessitates covering a wide energy range extending from tens of keV through 10~GeV, with an angular resolution on the order of $100 \;μ\text{rad}$. In this paper, we present a numerical model for betatron radiation from plasma accelerated beams, that are based on integration of Lienard Wiechert (LW) potentials for com…
The motion of beams in particle accelerators is dominated by a plethora of non-linear effects which can enhance chaotic motion and limit their performance. The application of advanced non-linear dynamics methods for detecting and correcting these effects and thereby increasing the region of beam stability plays an essential role during the accelerator design phase but also their operation. After describing the nature of non-linear effects and their impact on performance parameters of different particle accelerator categories, the theory of non-linear particle motion is outlined. The recent dev…
A highly efficient, fully parallelized, six-dimensional tracking model for simulating interactions of colliding hadron beams in high energy ring colliders and simulating schemes for mitigating their effects is described. The model uses the weak-strong approximation for calculating the head-on interactions when the test beam has lower intensity than the other beam, a look-up table for the efficient calculation of long-range beam-beam forces, and a self-consistent Poisson solver when both beams have comparable intensities. A performance test of the model in a parallel environment is presented. T…
Fermilab is constructing the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) as the centerpiece of the Accelerator R&D Program towards high-intensity circular machines. One of the factors limiting the beam intensity in present circular accelerators is collective instabilities, which can be suppressed by a spread of betatron frequencies (tunes) through the Landau damping mechanism or by an external damper, if the instability is slow enough. The spread is usually created by octupole magnets, which introduce the tune dependence on the amplitude and, in some cases, by a chromatic spread (tune dependence…
Fixed-field Alternating Gradient (FFAG) accelerators offer the potential of high-quality, moderate energy ion beams at low cost. Modeling of these structures is challenging with conventional beam tracking codes because of the large radial excursions of the beam and the significance of fringe field effects. Numerous tune resonances are crossed during the acceleration, which would lead to beam instability and loss in a storage ring. In a non-scaling FFAG, the hope is that these resonances can be crossed sufficiently rapidly to prevent beam loss. Simulations are required to see if this is indeed …
The extreme electromagnetic fields sustained by plasma-based accelerators allow for energy gain rates above 100 GeV/m but are also an inherent source of correlated energy spread. This severely limits the usability of these devices. Here we propose a novel compact concept which compensates the induced energy correlation by combining plasma accelerating stages with a magnetic chicane. Particle-in-cell and tracking simulations of a particular 1.5 m-long setup with two plasma stages show that 5.5 GeV bunches with a final relative energy spread of $1.2\times10^{-3}$ (total) and $5.5\times10^{-4}$ (…
Field emitted electrons can seriously affect the operation of high-field, high-duty factor electron accelerators. Accelerated field emission can result in high average power beams which can radiation damage beamline components. In addition, localized losses generate thermal hot spots whose outgassing degrades the ultra-high vacuum required in photoinjectors and cryomodules. However, despite their importance, the effects of field emission are rarely included in the design and engineering of electron injectors. This work attempts to remedy this situation by combining two well-known and well-docu…
In laser illuminated dielectric accelerators (DLA) high acceleration gradients can be achieved due to high damage thresholds of the materials at optical frequencies. This is a necessity for developing more compact particle accelerator technologies. The Accelerator on a CHip International Program (ACHIP) funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation is researching such devices. DESY Hamburg is part of the collaboration. The dedicated accelerator research facility SINBAD is particularly well suited for DLA experiments at relativistic electron energies. High quality beams and short bunch length…
The Centre for the Clinical Application of Particles' Laser-hybrid Accelerator for Radiobiological Applications (LhARA) facility is being studied and requires simulation of novel accelerator components (such as the Gabor lens capture system), detector simulation and simulation of the ion beam interaction with cells. The first stage of LhARA will provide protons up to 15 MeV for in vitro studies. The second stage of LhARA will use a fixed-field accelerator to increase the energy of the particles to allow in vivo studies with protons and in vitro studies with heavier ions. Particle accelerators support a wide array of scientific, industrial, and medical applications. To meet the needs of these applications, accelerator physicists rely heavily on detailed simulations of the complicated particle beam dynamics through the accelerator. One of the most computationally expensive and difficult-to-model effects is the impact of Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR). As a beam travels through a curved trajectory (e.g. due to a bending magnet), it emits radiation that in turn interacts with the rest of the beam. At each step through the trajectory, the electromagnetic fiel…
This article describes a method devised for efficient evaluation of arbitrary static magnetic and electric fields in a source free region needed for long time tracking of charged particles. Field values given on the boundary of the region of interest are reproduced inside by an arrangement of hypothetical magnetic or electric monopoles surrounding the boundary surface. The vector and scalar potentials are obtained by summing the contributions of each monopole. The second step of the method improves the evaluation speed of the potentials and their derivatives by orders of magnitude. This compri…
Polarized protons have never been accelerated to more than about $25$GeV. To achieve polarized proton beams in RHIC (250GeV), HERA (820GeV), and the TEVATRON (900GeV), ideas and techniques new to accelerator physics are needed. In this publication we will stress an important aspect of very high energy polarized proton beams, namely the fact that the equilibrium polarization direction can vary substantially across the beam in the interaction region of a high energy experiment when no countermeasure is taken. Such a divergence of the polarization direction would not only diminish the average pol…
The possibilities to accelerate vortex electrons with orbital angular momentum (OAM) to relativistic energies and to produce vortex ions, protons, and other charged particles crucially depend on whether the OAM is conserved during the acceleration and on how phase space of the wave packet evolves. We show that both the OAM and a mean emittance of the packet, the latter obeying the Schrödinger uncertainty relation, are conserved in axially symmetric fields of electric and magnetic lenses, typical for accelerators and electron microscopes, as well as in Penning traps, while a linear approximatio…
The electromagnetic field distribution as well as the resonating frequency of various modes in superconducting cavities used in particle accelerators for example are sensitive to small geometry deformations. The occurring variations are motivated by measurements of an available set of resonators from which we propose to extract a small number of relevant and independent deformations by using a truncated Karhunen-Loève expansion. The random deformations are used in an expressive uncertainty quantification workflow to determine the sensitivity of the eigenmodes. For the propagation of uncertaint…
