The formation of exciton-polaritons allows the transport of energy over hundreds of nanometres at velocities up to 10^6 m s^-1 in organic semiconductors films in the absence of external cavity structures.
Rubrene, a superstar in organic semiconductors, has achieved unprecedented achievements in the application of electronic devices, and research based on its various photoelectric properties is still in progress. In this review, we introduced the preparation of rubrene crystal, summarized the applications in organic optoelectronic devices with the latest research achievements based on rubrene semiconductors. An outlook of future research directions and challenges of rubrene semiconductor for applications is also provided.
Rapid progress in organic electronics demands new highly efficient organic semiconducting materials. Nevertheless, only few materials have been created so far that show reliable band-like transport with high charge mobilities, which reflects the two main obstacles in the field: the poor understanding of charge transport in organic semiconductors (OSs) and the difficulty of its quantification in devices. Here, we present a spectroscopic method for assessment of the charge transport in organic semiconductors. We show that the intensities of the low-frequency Raman spectrum allow calculation of t…
We investigate the effect of hypersonic (> 1 GHz) acoustic phonon wavepackets on electron transport in a semiconductor superlattice. Our quantum mechanical simulations demonstrate that a GHz train of picosecond deformation strain pulses propagating through a superlattice can generate current oscillations whose frequency is several times higher than that of the strain pulse train. The shape and polarity of the calculated current pulses agree well with experimentally measured electric signals. The calculations also explain and accurately reproduce the measured variation of the induced current pu…
Graphene oxide (GO) membranes continue to attract intense interest due to their unique molecular sieving properties combined with fast permeation rates. However, the membranes' use has been limited mostly to aqueous solutions because GO membranes appear to be impermeable to organic solvents, a phenomenon not fully understood yet. Here, we report efficient and fast filtration of organic solutions through GO laminates containing smooth two-dimensional (2D) capillaries made from flakes with large sizes of ~ 10-20 micron. Without sacrificing their sieving characteristics, such membranes can be mad…
Organic semiconductors are disordered molecular solids and as a result, their internal charge dynamics and ultimately, the performance of the optoelectronic devices they constitute, are governed by energetic disorder. To ascertain how energetic disorder impacts charge generation, exciton transport, charge transport, and the performance of organic semiconductor devices, an accurate approach is first required to measure this critical parameter. In this work, we show that the static disorder has no relation with the so-called Urbach energy in organic semiconductors. Instead, it can be obtained fr…
The modulus spectra of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) with electrode overlap and peripheral regions have been experimentally and theoretically investigated. The complex impedance of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) OFETs with electrode overlap and peripheral regions was measured with a frequency response analyzer. The complex modulus was derived from an equivalent circuit of OFETs with overlap and peripheral regions using a four-terminal matrix approach. The modulus spectra of the P3HT OFETs were successfully fitted by those calculated using the expression derived …
Excitons are widely found in semiconductors. In contrast to inorganic-based semiconductors, where the presence of excitons may need special morphonology, like low-dimensional layer structure, the excitons prevailingly exist in molecular organic semiconductors in a three-dimension solid state. The excitons can undergo a charging process to yield another kind of quasiparticles originating from the coupling of excitons and free charges. Herein, we investigated the interaction between excitons and free charges in a representative arylamine-derivative organic semiconductor(NPB), by the time-of-flig…
Understanding the role that exciton diffusion plays in organic solar cells is a crucial to understanding the recent rise in power conversion effciencies brought about by non-fullerene acceptors (NFA). Established methods for measuring exciton diffusion lengths in organic solar cells require specialized equipment designed for measuring high-resolution time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL). Here we introduce a technique, coined pulsed-PLQY, to measure the diffusion length of organic solar cells without any temporal measurements. Using a Monte-Carlo model we simulate the dynamics within a thin f…
Charge transport properties in organic semiconductors are determined by two kinds of microscopic disorders, namely energetic disorder related to the distribution of localized states and the spatial disorder related to the morphological features of the material. From a semi-classical picture, the charge transport properties are crucially determined by both the carrier mobility and the electrostatic field distribution in the material. Although the effect of disorders on carrier mobility has been widely studied, how electrostatic field distribution is distorted by the presence of disorders and it…
An electrode contact-related mechanism for the operational instability of organic electronic devices is proposed and confirmed via observation of a water-induced change in charge-injection barrier eights at the electrode/organic-semiconductor interfaces. Water molecules in air penetrate into the organic crystal via diffusion, and an external electric field orients the electric dipole of the water molecules at the electrode surfaces, leading to dipolar switching of the charge-injection barrier height. As a result of the switching, current-voltage curves of two-terminal Au-rubrene-Au devices cha…
Solution-processable interlayers are an important building block for the commercialization of organic electronic devices such as organic solar cells. Here, the potential of cross-linking to provide an insoluble, stable and versatile charge transport layer based on soluble organic semiconductors is studied. For this purpose, a photo-reactive tris-azide cross-linker is synthesized. The capability of the small molecular cross-linker is illustrated by applying it to a p-doped polymer used as a hole transport layer in organic solar cells. High cross-linking efficiency and excellent charge extractio…
Inducing an inversion layer in organic semiconductors is a highly nontrivial, but critical, achievement for producing organic field-effect transistor (OFET) devices, which rely on the generation of inversion, accumulation, and depletion regimes for successful operation. In recent years, a major milestone was reached: an OFET was made to successfully operate in the inversion-mode for the first time. Here, we develop a pulsed bias technique to characterize the dopant type of any organic material system, without prior knowledge or characterization of the material in question. We use this techniqu…
Spin angular momentum transfer in magnetic bilayers offers the possibility of ultrafast and low-loss operation for next-generation spintronic devices. We report the field- and temperature- dependent measurements on the magnetization precessions in Co$_2$FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TRMOKE). Analysis of the effective Gilbert damping and phase shift indicates a clear signature of an enhanced dynamic exchange coupling between the two ferromagnetic (FM) layers due to the reinforced spin pumping at resonance. The temperature dependence of the dynamic exchange-couplin…
