Electron-beams with a sinusoidal energy modulation have the potential to emit sub-femtosecond x-ray pulses in a free-electron laser. The energy modulation can be generated by overlapping a powerful infrared laser with an electron-beam in a magnetic wiggler. Here we report on a new infrared source for this modulation, coherent radiation from the electron-beam itself. In this self-modulation process, the current spike on the tail of the electron-beam radiates coherently at the resonant wavelength of the wiggler, producing a six-period carrier-envelope-phase (CEP) stable infrared field with gigawatt power. This field creates a few MeV, phase-stable modulation in the electron-beam core. The modulated electron-beam is immediately useful for generating sub-femtosecond x-ray pulses at any machine repetition rate, and the CEP-stable infrared field may find application as an experimental pump or timing diagnostic.
The beam heat load is a fundamental input parameter for the design of superconducting wigglers since it is needed to specify the cooling power. In this presentation I will review the possible beam heat load sources and the measurements of beam heat load performed and planned onto the cold vacuum chambers installed at different synchrotron light sources.
In the SSRF Phase-II beamline project, a Superconducting Wiggler (SW) will be installed in the electron storage ring. It may greatly impact on the beam dynamics due to the very high magnetic field. The emittance growth becomes a main problem, even after a well correction of the beam optics. A local achromatic lattice is studied, in order to combat the emittance growth and keep the good performance of the SSRF storage ring, as well as possible. Other effects of the SW are simulated and optimized as well, including the beta beating, the tune shift, the dynamic aperture, and the field error effec…
We discuss the approach of generating round beams for ultimate storage rings using vertical damping wigglers (with horizontal magnetic field). The vertical damping wigglers provide damping and excite vertical emittance. This eliminates the need to generate large linear coupling that is impractical with traditional off-axis injection. We use a PEP-X compatible lattice to demonstrate the approach. This lattice uses separate quadrupole and sextupole magnets with realistic gradient strengths. Intrabeam scattering effects are calculated. The horizontal and vertical emittances are 22.3 pm and 10.3 p…
The performance of synchrotron light facilities are strongly influenced by the photon beam bright- ness, that can be further increased by reducing the beam emittance. A Robinson Wiggler can be installed in a non-zero dispersion straight section to reduce the horizontal beam emittance. It is composed of an array of magnets of alternated polarities, whose both magnetic field and gradient are of opposite signs. It provides a compact solution to reduce by 50% the horizontal emittance. How- ever, it increases the energy spread by 40%. The concept of the Robinson Wiggler (RW) is described here, the …
OPAL-FEL is a recently developed tool for the modeling of particle accelerators containing wigglers or undulators. It extends the well established 3D electrostatic particle-tracking code OPAL, by merging it with the finite-difference time-domain electromagnetic solver MITHRA. We present results of two benchmark cases where OPAL-FEL simulations are compared to experimental results. Both experiments concern electron beamlines where the longitudinal phase space is modulated with a short magnetic wiggler. Good agreement was found in both the space charge and radiation dominated regimes.
We propose an innovative beam cooling scheme based on laser driven plasma wakefields to address the challenge of high luminosity generation for a future linear collider. For linear colliders, beam cooling is realised by means of damping rings equipped with wiggler magnets and accelerating cavities. This scheme ensures systematic reduction of phase space volume through synchrotron radiation emission whilst compensating for longitudinal momentum loss via an accelerating cavity. In this paper, the concept of a plasma wiggler and its effective model analogous to a magnetic wiggler are introduced; …
Cornell's electron/positron storage ring (CESR) was modified over a series of accelerator shutdowns beginning in May 2008, which substantially improves its capability for research and development for particle accelerators. Additionally a number of these are also relevant for the beam physics of proton accelerators. This paper, the last in a series of four…
We outline the fundamental coherent radiation emission processes from a bunched charged particles beam. In contrast to spontaneous emission of radiation from a random electron beam that is proportional to the number of particles, a pre-bunched electron beam can emit spontaneously coherent radiation proportional to the number of particles - squared, through the process of (spontaneous) superradiance (SP-SR) (in the sense of Dicke's). The coherent SP-SR emission of a bunched electron beam can be even further enhanced by a process of stimulated-superradiance (ST-SR) in the presence of a seed inje…
The harmonic lasing free-electron laser amplifier, in which two wigglers is employed in order for the fundamental resonance of the second wiggler to coincide with the third harmonic of the first wiggler to generate ultraviolet radiation, is studied. A set of coupled nonlinear first-order differential equations describing the nonlinear evolution of the system, for a long electron bunch, is solved numerically by CYRUS code. Solutions for the non-averaged and averaged equations are compared. Remarkable agreement is found between the averaged and non-averaged simulation for the evolution of the th…
A novel polarimeter based on the asymmetry in the spacial distribution of synchrotron radiation will make for a fine addition to the existing Møller and Compton polarimeters. The spin light polarimeter consists of a set of wiggler magnet along the beam that generate synchrotron radiation. The spacial distribution of synchrotron radiation will be measured by ionization chambers. The up-down (below and above the wiggle) spacial asymmetry in the transverse plain is used to quantify the polarization of the beam. As a part of the design process, effects of a realistic wiggler magnetic field and an …

Synchrotron radiation of relativistic electrons in storage rings naturally leads to the process of damping of betatron oscillations. Damping time and transverse beam emittance can be reduced by wigglers or undulators while the beam parameters are still well defined by the common radiation integrals, based on the properties of synchrotron radiation. However, the quantum excitation of betatron oscillations in principle can be considerably reduced if an electron radiation occurs due to the Thomson scattering in the periodic electromagnetic field. After a brief introduction we compare radiation pr…

It will also provide information of electron beam tilt for coupling evaluation. X-ray diagnostics will be based on imaging of bending magnet and three-pole wiggler synchrotron radiation sources. Diagnostics from three-pole wiggler source will be used to derive particles energy spread. Beta and dispersion functions will have to be evaluated for emittance and particles energy spread calculations. Due to small vertical source sizes imag…
Detuning of the fundamental is a way to enhance harmonic generation . By this method, the wiggler is composed of two segments in such a way that the fundamental resonance of the second segment to coincide with the third harmonic of the first segment of the wiggler to generate extreme ultraviolet radiation and x-ray emission. A set of coupled, nonlinear, and first-order differential equations in three dimensions describing the evolution of the electron trajectories and the radiation field with warm beam is solved numerically by CYRUS 3D code in the steady-state for two models (1) seeded free el…
This paper presents expected THz radiation spectra emitted by micro-bunched electron beams produced using a slit-mask placed within a magnetic chicane in the FAST (Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology) electron injector at Fermilab. Our purpose is to generate tunable narrow-band THz radiation with a simple scheme in a conventional photo-injector. Using the slit-mask in the chicane, we create a longitudinally micro-bunched beam after the chicane by transversely slicing an energy chirped electron bunch at a location with horizontal dispersion. In this paper, we discuss the theory related …
During the current run of an electron-positron collider DAFNE special electrodes for electron cloud suppression have been inserted in all dipole and wiggler magnets of the positron ring. In this paper we discuss the impact of these electrodes on beam dynamics and overall collider performance. In particular we report results of measurements such as e-cloud instabilities growth rate, transverse beam size variation, tune shifts along the bunch train etc. with the electrodes switched on and off that clearly indicate the effectiveness of the electrodes for e-cloud suppression.

We report observation of a strong wakefield induced energy modulation in an energy-chirped electron bunch passing through a dielectric-lined waveguide. This modulation can be effectively converted into a spatial modulation forming micro-bunches with a periodicity of 0.5 - 1 picosecond, hence capable of driving coherent THz radiation. The experimental results agree well with theoretical predictions.
Beam injections to KEKB and Photon Factory are performed with pulse-to-pulse modulation at 50 Hz. Three very different beams are switched every 20 ms in order to inject those beams into KEKB HER, LER and Photon Factory (PF) simultaneously. Human operators work on one of those three virtual accelerators, which correspond to three-fold accelerator parameters. Beam charges for PF injection and the primary electron for positron generation are 50-times different, and beam energies for PF and HER injection are 3-times different. Thus, the beam stabilities are sensitive to operational parameters, and…
Physics of chaos in a localized phase-space region is exploited to produce a longitudinally uniformly distributed beam. Theoretical study and %numerical simulations are used to study its origin and applicability in phase-space dilution of beam bunch. Through phase modulation to a double-rf system, a central region of localized chaos bounded by invariant tori are generated by overlapping parametric resonances. Condition and stability of the chaos will be analyzed. Applications include high-power beam, beam distribution uniformization, and industrial beam irradiation.
This paper studies the space charge impedances of a rectangular beam inside a rectangular chamber, and the limiting case, e.g., a rectangular beam between parallel plates, respectively. The charged beam has uniform density in vertical direction and arbitrary distribution in horizontal direction. The method of separation of variables is used to calculate the space charge potentials, fields, and impedances which are valid in the whole perturbation wavelength spectrum. Comparisons between the theoretical calculations and the numerical simulations are also provided and they match quite well. It is…
Density modulations on electron beams can improve machine performance of beam-driven accelerators and FELs with resonance beam-wave coupling. The beam modulation is studied with a masked chicane by the analytic model and simulations with the beam parameters of the Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) facility. With the chicane design parameters (bending angle of 18°, bending radius of 0.95 m and R56 ~ - 0.19 m) and a nominal beam of 3 ps bunch length, the analytic model showed that a slit-mask with slit period 900 μm and aperture width 300 μm induces a modulation of bunch-to-bunc…
We propose a method based on the slice energy spread modulation to generate strong subpicoseond density bunching in high-intensity relativistic electron beams. A laser pulse with periodic intensity envelope is used to modulate the slice energy spread of the electron beam, which can then be converted into density modulation after a dispersive section. It is found that the double-horn slice energy distribution of the electron beam induced by the laser modulation is very effective to increase the density bunching. Since the modulation is performed on a relativistic electron beam, the process does…
Using the method of small signal analysis, we study the application potential of relativistic electron beams in split-cavity oscillators (SCO's). A beam-energy change in the SCO as a function of the initial energy of a relativistic beam is considered. It is shown that the small-signal analysis method enables adequate evaluation of SCO parameters needed for effective modulation of a relativistic beam in a split cavity and for HPM generation using SCO's. The range of energies is found for which the effect of self-modulation of the beam density in SCO structures is most pronounced. It is also sho…
We present a new method for generation of relativistic electron beams with current modulation on the nanometer scale and below. The current modulation is produced by diffracting relativistic electrons in single crystal Si, accelerating the diffracted beam and imaging the crystal structure, then transferring the image into the temporal dimension via emittance exchange. The modulation period can be tuned by adjusting electron optics after diffraction. This tunable longitudinal modulation can have a period as short as a few angstroms, enabling production of coherent hard x-rays from a source base…
The beam energy spread at the entrance of undulator system is of paramount importance for efficient density modulation in high-gain seeded free-electron lasers (FELs). In this paper, the dependences of high harmonic micro-bunching in the high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG), echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) and phase-merging enhanced harmonic generation (PEHG) schemes on the electron energy spread distribution are studied. Theoretical investigations and multi-dimensional numerical simulations are applied to the cases of uniform and saddle beam energy distributions and compared to a trad…
In this paper, we propose a scheme to generate tunable multi-color attosecond coherent X-ray radiation for future light source applications. This scheme uses an energy chirped electron beam, a laser modulators, a laser chirper and two bunch compressors to generate a multi-spike prebunched kilo-Ampere current electron beam from a few tens Ampere electron beam out of a linac. Such an electron beam transports through a series of undulator radiators and bunch compressors to generate multi-color coherent X-ray radiation. As an illustration, we present an example to generate two attosecond pulses wi…
Accelerator-based MeV ultrafast electron microscope (MUEM) has been proposed as a promising tool to study structural dynamics at the nanometer spatial scale and picosecond temporal scale. Here we report experimental tests of a prototype MUEM where high quality images with nanoscale fine structures were recorded with a pulsed 3 MeV picosecond electron beam. The temporal and spatial resolution of the MUEM operating in single-shot mode is about 4 ps (FWHM) and 100 nm (FWHM), corresponding to a temporal-spatial resolution of 4e-19 s*m, about 2 orders of magnitude higher than that achieved with sta…
The AWAKE experiment will use a \SI{400}{GeV/c} proton beam with a longitudinal bunch length of $σ_z = 12\,\rm{cm}$ to create and sustain GV/m plasma wakefields over 10 meters . A 12 cm long bunch can only drive strong wakefields in a plasma with $n_{pe} = 7 \times 10^{14}\,\rm{electrons/cm}^3$ after the self-modulation instability (SMI) developed and microbunches formed, spaced at the plasma wavelength. The fields present during SMI focus and defocus the protons in the transverse plane \cite{SMI}. We show that by inserting two imaging screens downstream the plasma, we can measure the maximum …
The initial beam emittance determines the maximum wakefield amplitude that can be reached as a result of beam self-modulation in the plasma. The wakefield excited by the fully self-modulated beam decreases linearly with the increase of the beam emittance. There is a value of initial emittance beyond which the self-modulation does not develop even if the instability is initiated by a strong seed perturbation. The emittance scale at which the wakefield is twice suppressed with respect to the zero-emittance case (the so called critical emittance) is determined by inability of the excited wave to …
In this paper, we propose a scheme to generate tunable coherent X-ray radiation for future light source applications. This scheme uses an energy chirped electron beam, a laser modulator, a laser chirper and two bunch compressors to generate a prebunched kilo-Ampere current electron beam from a few tens Ampere electron beam out of a linac. The initial modulation energy wavelength can be compressed by a factor of $1+h_b R_{56}^a$ in phase space, where $h_b$ is the energy bunch length chirp introduced by the laser chirper, $R_{56}^a$ is the momentum compaction factor of the first bunch compressor…
Precision experiments in the parity violating electron scattering (PVES) sector is one the leading methods to probe physics beyond the standard model (SM). A large part of the physics program being envisioned for future facilities such as the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) includes searching for physics beyond SM. Here, we present a novel technique which uses spacial asymmetry of synchrotron radiation produced by an electron beam passing through a wiggler magnet to trace the changes in beam polarization. Such a relative polarimeter could be vital if the goal of <0.5% polarimetry is to be achieved…
The self-modulation instability is a key effect that makes possible the usage of nowadays proton beams as drivers for plasma wakefield acceleration. Development of the instability in uniform plasmas and in plasmas with a small density up-step is numerically studied with the focus at nonlinear stages of beam evolution. The step parameters providing the strongest established wakefield are found, and the mechanism of stable bunch train formation is identified.
Various seeding configurations have being proposed for frequency up-conversion of the electron beam density distribution, in which the energy spread, may however hinder the harmonic generation efficiency. In this Letter, a method for cooling the electron beam energy spread by off-resonance seed laser modulation is described, using a transversely dispersed beam and a modulator undulator with proper transverse gradient. With this novel mechanism, it is shown that the frequency up-conversion efficiency can be significantly enhanced. We present theoretical analysis and numerical simulations for se…
Seeded self-modulation in a plasma can transform a long proton beam into a train of micro-bunches that can excite a strong wakefield over long distances, but this needs the plasma to have a certain density profile with a short-scale ramp up. For the parameters of the AWAKE experiment at CERN, we numerically study which density profiles are optimal if the self-modulation is seeded by a short electron bunch. With the optimal profiles, it is possible to "freeze" the wakefield at approximately half the wavebreaking level. High-energy electron bunches (160 MeV) are less efficient seeds than low-ene…
The transverse self-modulation of ultra-relativistic, long lepton bunches in high-density plasmas is explored through full-scale particle-in-cell simulations. We demonstrate that long SLAC-type electron and positron bunches can become strongly self-modulated over centimeter distances, leading to wake excitation in the blowout regime with accelerating fields in excess of 20 GV/m. We show that particles energy variations exceeding 10 GeV can occur in meter-long plasmas. We find that the self-modulation of positively and negatively charged bunches differ when the blowout is reached. Seeding the s…
The Qweak experiment aims to measure the weak charge of the proton to 4% via the parity-violating asymmetry ($\sim$-200 ppb) in elastic e+p scattering. The scattering rate is largely influenced by five beam parameters: horizontal position (X), angle (X'), vertical position (Y), angle (Y'), and beam energy (E). Changes in these parameters when the beam polarization is reversed will create a false asymmetry. To measure the detector sensitivities, we modulate X, X', Y, Y' using four air-core dipoles in the Hall C beamline as well as beam energy with a superconducting RF cavity. Linear regression …
The goal of the first phase of the AWAKE \cite{AWAKE1,AWAKE2} experiment at CERN is to measure the self-modulation \cite{SMI} of the $σ_z = 12\,\rm{cm}$ long SPS proton bunch into microbunches after traversing $10\,\rm{m}$ of plasma with a plasma density of $n_{pe}=7\times10^{14}\,\rm{electrons/cm}^3$. The two screen measurement setup \cite{Turner2016} is a proton beam diagnostic that can indirectly prove the successful development of the self-modulation of the proton beam by imaging protons that got defocused by the transverse plasma wakefields after passing through the plasma, at two locatio…
We show using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and theoretical analysis that a high-quality electron beam whose density is modulated at angstrom scales can be generated directly using density downramp injection in a periodically modulated density in nonlinear plasma wave wakefields. The density modulation turns on and off the injection of electrons at the period of the modulation. Due to the unique longitudinal mapping between the electrons' initial positions and their final trapped positions inside the wake, this results in an electron beam with density modulation at a wavelength orders of …
