We proposed a~new accurate aspect extraction method that makes use of both word and character-based embeddings. We have conducted experiments of various models of aspect extraction using LSTM and BiLSTM including CRF enhancement on five different pre-trained word embeddings extended with character embeddings. The results revealed that BiLSTM outperforms regular LSTM, but also word embedding coverage in train and test sets profoundly impacted aspect detection performance. Moreover, the additional CRF layer consistently improves the results across different models and text embeddings. Summing up, we obtained state-of-the-art F-score results for SemEval Restaurants (85%) and Laptops (80%).
In the present paper, two models are presented namely LSTM-CRF and BERT-LSTM-CRF for semantic tagging of universal semantic tag dataset. The experiments show that the first model is much easier to converge while the second model that leverages BERT embedding, takes a long time to converge and needs a big dataset for semtagging to be effective.

We compare the use of LSTM-based and CNN-based character-level word embeddings in BiLSTM-CRF models to approach chemical and disease named entity recognition (NER) tasks. Empirical results over the BioCreative V CDR corpus show that the use of either type of character-level word embeddings in conjunction with the BiLSTM-CRF models leads to comparable state-of-the-art performance. However, the models using CNN-based character-level word embeddings have a computational performance advantage, increasing training time over word-based models by 25% while the LSTM-based character-level word embeddin…

We propose a morphologically informed model for named entity recognition, which is based on LSTM-CRF architecture and combines word embeddings, Bi-LSTM character embeddings, part-of-speech (POS) tags, and morphological information. While previous work has focused on learning from raw word input, using word and character embeddings only, we show that for morphologically rich languages, such as Bulgarian, access to POS information contributes more to the performance gains than the detailed morphological information. Thus, we show that named entity recognition needs only coarse-grained POS tags, …

Dependency tree structures capture long-distance and syntactic relationships between words in a sentence. The syntactic relations (e.g., nominal subject, object) can potentially infer the existence of certain named entities. In addition, the performance of a named entity recognizer could benefit from the long-distance dependencies between the words in dependency trees. In this work, we propose a simple yet effective dependency-guided LSTM-CRF model to encode the complete dependency trees and capture the above properties for the task of named entity recognition (NER). The data statistics show s…

Opinion phrase extraction is one of the key tasks in fine-grained sentiment analysis. While opinion expressions could be generic subjective expressions, aspect specific opinion expressions contain both the aspect as well as the opinion expression within the original sentence context. In this work, we formulate the task as an instance of token-level sequence labeling. When multiple aspects are present in a sentence, detection of opinion phrase boundary becomes difficult and label of each word depend not only upon the surrounding words but also with the concerned aspect. We propose a neural netw…
Named entity recognition (NER) is used to identify relevant entities in text. A bidirectional LSTM (long short term memory) encoder with a neural conditional random fields (CRF) decoder (biLSTM-CRF) is the state of the art methodology. In this work, we have done an analysis of several methods that intend to optimize the performance of networks based on this architecture, which in some cases encourage overfitting avoidance. These methods target exploration of parameter space, regularization of LSTMs and penalization of confident output distributions. Results show that the optimization methods i…

This study proposes a method to develop neural models of the morphological analyzer for Japanese Hiragana sentences using the Bi-LSTM CRF model. Morphological analysis is a technique that divides text data into words and assigns information such as parts of speech. This technique plays an essential role in downstream applications in Japanese natural language processing systems because the Japanese language does not have word delimiters between words. Hiragana is a type of Japanese phonogramic characters, which is used for texts for children or people who cannot read Chinese characters. Morphol…

Researches on Indonesian named entity (NE) tagger have been conducted since years ago. However, most did not use deep learning and instead employed traditional machine learning algorithms such as association rule, support vector machine, random forest, naïve bayes, etc. In those researches, word lists as gazetteers or clue words were provided to enhance the accuracy. Here, we attempt to employ deep learning in our Indonesian NE tagger. We use long short-term memory (LSTM) as the topology since it is the state-of-the-art of NE tagger. By using LSTM, we do not need a word list in order to enhanc…

Morphological Segmentation involves decomposing words into morphemes, the smallest meaning-bearing units of language. This is an important NLP task for morphologically-rich agglutinative languages such as the Southern African Nguni language group. In this paper, we investigate supervised and unsupervised models for two variants of morphological segmentation: canonical and surface segmentation. We train sequence-to-sequence models for canonical segmentation, where the underlying morphemes may not be equal to the surface form of the word, and Conditional Random Fields (CRF) for surface segmentat…

Spelling error detection serves as a crucial preprocessing in many natural language processing applications. Due to the characteristics of Chinese Language, Chinese spelling error detection is more challenging than error detection in English. Existing methods are mainly under a pipeline framework, which artificially divides error detection process into two steps. Thus, these methods bring error propagation and cannot always work well due to the complexity of the language environment. Besides existing methods only adopt character or word information, and ignore the positive effect of fusing cha…

Chinese named entity recognition (CNER) is an important task in Chinese natural language processing field. However, CNER is very challenging since Chinese entity names are highly context-dependent. In addition, Chinese texts lack delimiters to separate words, making it difficult to identify the boundary of entities. Besides, the training data for CNER in many domains is usually insufficient, and annotating enough training data for CNER is very expensive and time-consuming. In this paper, we propose a neural approach for CNER. First, we introduce a CNN-LSTM-CRF neural architecture to capture bo…
We convert the Chinese medical text attributes extraction task into a sequence tagging or machine reading comprehension task. Based on BERT pre-trained models, we have not only tried the widely used LSTM-CRF sequence tagging model, but also other sequence models, such as CNN, UCNN, WaveNet, SelfAttention, etc, which reaches similar performance as LSTM+CRF. This sheds a light on the traditional sequence tagging models. Since the aspect of emphasis for different sequence tagging models varies substantially, ensembling these models adds diversity to the final system. By doing so, our system achie…

Recently, a variety of model designs and methods have blossomed in the context of the sentiment analysis domain. However, there is still a lack of wide and comprehensive studies of aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA). We want to fill this gap and propose a comparison with ablation analysis of aspect term extraction using various text embedding methods. We particularly focused on architectures based on long short-term memory (LSTM) with optional conditional random field (CRF) enhancement using different pre-trained word embeddings. Background. Previous state-of-the-art systems on Drug Name Recognition (DNR) and Clinical Concept Extraction (CCE) have focused on a combination of text "feature engineering" and conventional machine learning algorithms such as conditional random fields and support vector machines. However, developing good features is inherently heavily time-consuming. Conversely, more modern machine learning approaches such as recurrent neural networks (RNNs) have proved capable of automatically learning effective features from either random assignments or automated word "embeddings". Aspect and opinion term extraction is a critical step in Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA). Our study focuses on evaluating transfer learning using pre-trained BERT (Devlin et al., 2018) to classify tokens from hotel reviews in bahasa Indonesia. The primary challenge is the language informality of the review texts. By utilizing transfer learning from a multilingual model, we achieved up to 2% difference on token level F1-score compared to the state-of-the-art Bi-LSTM model with fewer training epochs (3 vs. 200 epochs). The fine-tuned model clearly outperforms the Bi-LSTM model on the enti…
Existing neural models usually predict the tag of the current token independent of the neighboring tags. The popular LSTM-CRF model considers the tag dependencies between every two consecutive tags. However, it is hard for existing neural models to take longer distance dependencies of tags into consideration. The scalability is mainly limited by the complex model structures and the cost of dynamic programming during training. In our work, we first design a new model called "high order LSTM" to predict multiple tags for the current token which contains not only the current tag but also the prev…

Neural network has become the dominant method for Chinese word segmentation. Most existing models cast the task as sequence labeling, using BiLSTM-CRF for representing the input and making output predictions. Recently, attention-based sequence models have emerged as a highly competitive alternative to LSTMs, which allow better running speed by parallelization of computation. We investigate self attention network for Chinese word segmentation, making comparisons between BiLSTM-CRF models. In addition, the influence of contextualized character embeddings is investigated using BERT, and a method …
