Testing gravity theory in the strong field region becomes a reality due to the observations of gravitational waves and black hole shadows. In this paper, we discuss how to constrain the possible deviations of the classical general relativity with the image of M87* observed by the Event Horizon Telescope. More precisely, we want to know where is the event horizon for a non-rotating black hole. General relativity predicts the horizon is located at the Schwarzschild radius $r_\textrm{s}$, while other gravity theories may give different predictions. We propose a parameterized Schwarzschild metric (PSM) in which the horizon is located at $r=nr_\textrm{s}$, where $n$ is a real free parameter, and prove general relativity with nonlinear electrodynamics allows $n\neq1$. In the weak field region, the PSM is equivalent to the Schwarzschild metric regardless of the value of $n$. In the strong field region, the difference between the PSM and Schwarzschild metric would leave an imprint on the shadow image. We present detailed calculations and discussions on the black hole shadows with large background light source and accretion disk in the PSM framework. More importantly, we point out that $n\approx2$ can be used to explain why the black hole mass measured by the shadow is a factor of about two larger than the previous gas dynamics measurements. If this explanation is confirmed to be right, then this phenomenon, together with the late-time cosmological acceleration, will be very important to test gravity theories.
We consider a spacetime foam model of the Schwarzschild horizon, where the horizon consists of Planck size black holes. According to our model the entropy of the Schwarzschild black hole is proportional to the area of its event horizon. It is possible to express geometrical arguments to the effect that the constant of proportionality is, in natural units, equal to one quarter.
The claim that the microstates of Schwarzschild black holes in perturbative string theory amount to the modes of long folded strings in the vicinity of its horizon is supported by more evidence.
Red shift in communication and possibility of interaction is discussed for objects around the event horizon of Schwarzschild space-time. It is pointed out that the arrow of time within the horizon cannot always be inferred by observations carried out outside. Two scenarios are presented for the causal structure of the space-time and it is found that in one of them extended objects fall apart into their elementary constituents by crossing the horizon.
A recent proposal that gravity theory is an emergent phenomenon also entails the possibility of photon decay near the Schwarzschild event horizon. We present a possible mechanism for such decay, which utilizes a dimensional reduction near the horizon.
We describe a finite-difference method for locating apparent horizons and illustrate its capabilities on boosted Kerr and Schwarzschild black holes. Our model spacetime is given by the Kerr-Schild metric. We apply a Lorentz boost to this spacetime metric and then carry out a 3+1 decomposition. The result is a slicing of Kerr/Schwarzschild in which the black hole is propagated and Lorentz contracted. We show that our method can locate distorted apparent horizons efficiently and accurately.
We show in this note that the Padmanabhan expression $E = a/2$ for the energy of the Schwarzschild and de Sitter spacetimes (a - the horizon radius) is also valid for the Rindler horizon, using an analogy with the electrostatic case.
It is argued that the diffeomorphism on the horizontal sphere can be regarded as a nontrivial asymptotic isometry of the Schwarzschild black hole. We propose a new boundary condition of asymptotic metrics near the horizon and show that the condition admits the local time-shift and diffeomorphism on the horizon as the asymptotic symmetry.
A static Einstein metric that generalizes the Schwarzschild metric is considered. The event horizon is not necessarily a sphere and the term $dt\sp2$ is a function on such horizon. That the metric is Einstein establishes a relation between its terms. One demonstrates that the scalar curvature of the horizon is constant, and that the term $dt\sp2$ gives rise to (i) the metric of the horizon being Einstein, or (ii) the scalar curvature of the horizon being proportional to an eigenvalue of the Laplace operator.
We discuss the effect of different choices in partial gauge fixing of bulk local Lorentz invariance, on the description of the horizon degrees of freedom of a Schwarzschild black hole as an SU(2) Chern-Simons theory with specific sources. A classically equivalent description in terms of an ISO(2) Chern-Simons theory is also discussed. Further, we demonstrate that both these descriptions can be partially gauge fixed to a horizon theory with U(1) local gauge invariance, with the solder form sources being subject to extra constraints in directions orthogonal to an internal vector field left invar…
Slice-stretching effects are discussed as they arise at the event horizon when geodesically slicing the extended Schwarzschild black-hole spacetime while using singularity excision. In particular, for Novikov and isotropic spatial coordinates the outward movement of the event horizon (``slice sucking'') and the unbounded growth there of the radial metric component (``slice wrapping'') are analyzed. For the overall slice stretching, very similar late time behavior is found when comparing with maximal slicing. Thus, the intuitive argument that attributes slice stretching to singularity avoidance…
We calculate the renormalized vacuum polarization and stress tensor for a massless, arbitrarily coupled scalar field in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state on the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole threaded by an infinte straight cosmic string. This calculation relies on a generalized Heine identity for non-integer Legendre functions which we derive without using specific properties of the Legendre functions themselves.
This paper is devoted to investigate the cold plasma wave properties outside the event horizon of the Schwarzschild planar analogue. The dispersion relations are obtained from the corresponding Fourier analyzed equations for non-rotating and rotating, non-magnetized and magnetized backgrounds. These dispersion relations provide complex wave numbers. The wave numbers are shown in graphs to discuss the nature and behavior of waves and the properties of plasma lying in the vicinity of the Schwarzschild event horizon.
We assumed a stress tensor is necessary on the event horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole or on the Rindler horizon for the Israel matching conditions to be satisfied. We found the surface energy density $ρ_{s}$ is vanishing but the surface pressure $p_{s}$ equals $1/16πl$ in both cases, where $l$ is the proper distance from the horizon. The junction relations are applied both for $r =$ const. and $T =$ const. surfaces, with the same results for the surface parameters $ρ_{s}$ and $p_{s}$. We emphasize the nonstatic feature of the spacetimes beyond the corresponding horizons.
We provide the first example of a geometric transition that resolves the Schwarzschild black hole into a smooth microstructure in eleven-dimensional supergravity on a seven-torus. The geometry is indistinguishable from a Schwarzschild black hole dressed with a scalar field in four dimensions, referred to as a Schwarzschild scalarwall. In eleven dimensions, the scalar field arises as moduli of the torus. The resolution occurs at an infinitesimal scale above the horizon, where it transitions to a smooth bubbling spacetime supported by M2-brane flux.
It is argued that free QFT can be defined on the event horizon of a Schwarzschild-like spacetime and that this theory is unitarily and algebraically equivalent to QFT in the bulk (near the horizon). Under that unitary equivalence the bulk hidden SL(2,R) symmetry found in a previous work becomes manifest on the event horizon, it being induced by a group of horizon diffeomorphisms. The class of generators of that group can be enlarged to include a full Virasoro algebra of fields which are defined on the event horizon. These generators have a quantum representation in QFT on the event horizon and…
The question of the physical reality of the black hole interior is a recurrent one. An objection to its existence is the well known fact that the velocity of a material particle, refered to the stationary frame, tends to the velocity of light as it approaches the horizon. It is shown, using Kruskal coordinates, that a timelike radial geodesic does not become null at the event horizon.
We introduce a calculation, based on purely topological reasoning, of the global equilibrium Hawking temperature of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime, where a Schwarzschild black hole horizon coexists with a de Sitter cosmological horizon. Our method is based on the careful calculation of the Euler characteristic of the total system, showing that this quantity completely determines the thermodynamical features of the system. The method is universal and can be applied to any structure possessing multiple horizons in general relativity.
We obtain an analytic expression for the vacuum polarization on the horizon of the Schwarzschild black hole threaded by an infinite cosmic string. This calculation relies on a generalized Heine identity for Legendre functions which we derive without using specific properties of the Legendre functions themselves.
We show that, in the absence of matter in the bulk, the Einstein equations and the Gauss-normal form of the metric place stringent restrictions on the form of the event horizon in a brane world. As a consequence, the off-brane extension of the standard 4-D Schwarzschild horizon in the Randall-Sundrum $AdS_5$ spacetime, as it is viewed from the brane can only be of a tubular shape, instead of a pancake shape. When it is viewed from the $AdS_5$ horizon, such a tubular horizon is absent.
The thermodynamic properties of Cauchy horizon is a matter of interest. Event horizon and Cauchy horizon together can enlighten us about the micro-states of a black hole. In addition, if we consider a black hole metric modified with quantum terms, which is not forcing the geodesics to focus at a singularity, the study of horizons becomes much more interesting. The spacelike behavior inside the Cauchy horizon has a deep impact on the related thermodynamics. We analyze different thermodynamic product to check whether a right left string theory mode's addition type representation for the concerne…
Using the exact solution to Einstein equations of Compere and Long for the Schwarzschild metric containing supertranslation field, we study the near-horizon symmetries of the metric. We consider class of metrics with supertranslation field depending only on a spherical angle $θ$. After reviewing the action of supertranslations preserving the static gauge of the metric, we study general transformations preserving the near-horizon form of the metric. We determine the asymptotic Killing vectors and calculate the charge corresponding to the asymptotic symmetries preserving the form of the metric a…
The 3+1 formalism of Thorne, Price and Macdonald has been used to derive the linear two-fluid equations describing transverse and longitudinal waves propagating in the two-fluid ideal collisionless plasmas surrounding a Schwarzschild black hole. The plasma is assumed to be falling in radial direction toward the event horizon. The relativistic two-fluid equations have been reformulate, in analogy with the special relativistic formulation as explained in an earlier paper, to take account of relativistic effects due to the event horizon. Here a WKB approximation is used to derive the local disper…
We develop a unified framework for the construction of soft dressings at boundaries of spacetime, such as the null infinity of Minkowski spacetime and the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole. The construction is based on an old proposal of Mandelstam for quantizing QED and considers matter fields dressed by Wilson lines. Along time-like paths, the Wilson lines puncturing the boundary are the analogs of flat space Faddeev-Kulish dressings. We focus on the Schwarzschild black hole where our framework provides a quantum-field-theoretical perspective of the Hawking-Perry-Strominger viewpoint tha…
Two particle collisions close to the horizon of the rotating nonextremal Kerr's and Schwarzschild black holes are analyzed. For the case of multiple collisions it is shown that high energy in the centre of mass frame occurs due to a great relative velocity of two particles and a large Lorentz factor. The dependence of the relative velocity on the distance to horizon is analyzed, the time of movement from the point in the accretion disc to the point of scattering with large energy as well as the time of back movement to the Earth are calculated. It is shown that they have reasonable order.
An anisotropic fluid with a negative radial pressure $p = - ρ$ is supposed to exist near the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole. The constant energy density $ρ$ depends only on the black hole mass. The radial acceleration of the static observers is constant but its modulus has exactly the Rindler form, as was recently suggested by Dahia and Felix da Silva. The structure of the stress tensor is similar with that obtained previously for the interior region of a black hole, excepting the time dependence.
We investigate the motion of a test particle in a d-dimensional, spherically symmetric and static space-time supported by a mass $M$ plus a $Λ$-term. The motion is strongly dependent on the sign of $Λ$. In Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) space-time ($Λ> 0$), besides the physical singularity at $r=0$ there are cases with two horizons and two turning points, one horizon and one turning point and the complete absence of horizon and turning points. For Schwarzschild-Anti de Sitter (SAdS) space-time ($Λ< 0$) the horizon coordinate is associated to a unique turning point.
For the radial motion of massive particles with large angular momenta in Schwarzschild geometry and that of massive charged particles with large angular momenta or energy in a particular range in Reissner--Nordström geometry, there exist classically forbidden regions on the outside of the respective event horizons which scatter certain infalling geodesics or screen some of the black holes' evaporation by reflecting the emitted particles back into the black holes. Quantum tunneling across this forbidden regions is studied.
It was suggested earlier that the gravitational redshift formula can be invalid when the effect of the backscattering is strong. It is demonstrated here numerically, for an exemplary electromagnetic pulse that is: i) initially located very close to the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole and ii) strongly backscattered, that a mean frequency does not obey the standard redshift formula. Redshifts appear to depend on the frequency and there manifests a backscatter-induced blueshift in the outgoing radiation.
This paper investigates wave properties of hot plasma in a Veselago medium. For the Schwarzschild black hole, the $3+1$ GRMHD equations are re-formulated which are linearly perturbed and then Fourier analyzed for rotating (non-magnetized and magnetized) plasmas. The graphs of wave vector, refractive index and change in refractive are used to discuss the wave properties. The results obtained confirm the presence of Veselago medium for both rotating (non-magnetized and magnetized) plasmas. This work generalized the isothermal plasma waves in the Veselago medium to hot plasma case.
We consider a microscopic model of a stretched horizon of the Schwarzschild black hole. In our model the stretched horizon consists of a finite number of discrete constituents. Assuming that the quantum states of the Schwarzschild black hole are encoded in the quantum states of the constituents of its stretched horizon in a certain manner we obtain an explicit, analytic expression for the partition function of the hole. Our partition function predicts, among other things, the Hawking effect, and provides it with a microscopic, statistical interpretation.
Causal radial geodesics with a positive interval in the Schwarzschild metric include a subset of trajectories completely confined under a horizon, which compose a thermal statistical ensemble with the Hawking-Gibbons temperature. The Bekenstein--Hawking entropy is given by an action at corresponding geodesics of particles with a summed mass equal to that of black hole in the limit of large mass.
We analyze the dispersion modes of hot plasma around Schwarzschild de-Sitter event horizon in the presence of Veselago medium. For this purpose, we apply ADM 3+1 formalism to develop GRMHD equations for the Schwarzschild de-Sitter spacetime. Implementation of linear perturbation yields perturbed GRMHD equations that are used for the Fourier analysis of rotating (non-magnetized and magnetized) plasma. Wave analysis is described by the graphical representation of the wave vector, refractive index, change in refractive index, phase and group velocities. The outcome of this work supports the valid…
We consider an observer who moves under the horizon of the Schwarzschild black hole and absorbs a photon. There are two different situations when (i) a photon comes from infinity, (ii) it is emitted by another observer under the horizon (say, by a surface of a collapsing star). We analyze the frequency change for absorption near the event horizon, in an intermediate region and near the singularity and compare the results for both scenarios. Near the singularity, in both scenarios infinite redshift (in the pure radial case) or infinite blueshift are possible, depending on angular momenta of a p…
We show that a particle detector can distinguish the $\mathbb{RP}^3$ geon from the Schwarzschild black hole, even though they differ only by a topological identification beyond the event horizon. This shows that the detector can read out information about the non-local structure even when separated from the non-locality by an event horizon. Our analysis of the dependence of the transition on the detector gap is novel, and in principle presents an interesting observational signal.
We apply the ADM 3+1 formalism to derive the general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic equations for cold plasma in spatially flat Schwarzschild metric. Respective perturbed equations are linearized for non-magnetized and magnetized plasmas both in non-rotating and rotating backgrounds. These are then Fourier analyzed and the corresponding dispersion relations are obtained. These relations are discussed for the existence of waves with positive angular frequency in the region near the horizon. Our results support the fact that no information can be extracted from the Schwarzschild black hole. It…
We prove the existence of asymptotically hyperbolic solutions to the vacuum Einstein constraint equations with a marginally outer trapped boundary of positive mean curvature, using the constant mean curvature conformal method. As an application of this result, we verify the Penrose inequality for certain perturbations of Schwarzschild Anti-de Sitter black hole initial data.
A modified version of the Schwarzschild geometry is proposed. The source of curvature comes from an anisotropic fluid with $p_{r} = -ρ$ and fluctuating tangential pressures. The event horizon has zero surface gravity but the invariant acceleration of a static observer is finite there. The Tolman - Komar energy of the gravitational fluid changes sign on the horizon, equals the black hole mass at infinity and is vanishing at $r = 0$. There is a nonzero surface stress tensor on the horizon due to a jump of the extrinsic curvature. Near-horizon geometry resembles the Robinson - Bertotti metric and…
We address the question of the uniqueness of the Schwarzschild black hole by considering the following question: How many meaningful solutions of the Einstein equations exist that agree with the Schwarzschild solution (with a fixed mass m) everywhere except maybe on a codimension one hypersurface? The perhaps surprising answer is that the solution is unique (and uniquely the Schwarzschild solution everywhere in spacetime) *unless* the hypersurface is the event horizon of the Schwarzschild black hole, in which case there are actually an infinite number of distinct solutions. We explain this res…
In the light of recent interest in quantum gravity in de Sitter space, we investigate semi-classical aspects of 4-dimensional Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time using the method of complex paths. The standard semi-classical techniques (such as Bogoliubov coefficients and Euclidean field theory) have been useful to study quantum effects in space-times with single horizons; however, none of these approaches seem to work for Schwarzschild-de Sitter or, in general, for space-times with multiple horizons. We extend the method of complex paths to space-times with multiple horizons and obtain the spe…
Among the coordinates used to construct a conformal compactification of the Schwarzschild spacetime, none of them simultaneously extend smoothly both through an event horizon and beyond null infinity. To construct such coordinates, instead of starting with the Kruskal-Szekeres coordinates we assume direct analytic transformation between Schwarzschild and compactified coordinates and determine their behavior on the event horizon and at null infinity. We then propose an example of such coordinates and illustrate the way they cover the conformally extended Schwarzschild spacetime as well as their …
Verification of the First Law of Horizon Thermodynamics for Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström, Kerr, and Kerr-Newman Black Holes in Four-Dimensional f(R) Gravity with Dual Scalar Fields
We construct a mass or energy function for the non-Nariai class Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole spacetime in the region between the black hole and the cosmological event horizons. The mass function is local, positive definite, continuous and increases monotonically with the radial distance from the black hole event horizon. We derive the Smarr formula using this mass function, and demonstrate that the mass function reproduces the two-temperature Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole thermodynamics, along with a term corresponding to the negative pressure due to positive cosmological constant. …

We study scalar field fluctuations of the inflaton field in an early inflationary universe on an effective 4D Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) metric, which is obtained after make a planar coordinate transformation on a 5D Ricci-flat Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) static metric. We obtain the important result that the spectrum of fluctuations at zeroth order is independent of the scalar field mass $M$ on Schwarzschild scales, while on cosmological scales it exhibits a mass dependence. However, in the first-order expansion, the spectrum depends of the inflaton mass and the amplitude is linear with …

The most promising way to compute the gravitational waves emitted by binary black holes (BBHs) in their last dozen orbits, where post-Newtonian techniques fail, is a quasistationary approximation introduced by Detweiler and being pursued by Price and others. In this approximation the outgoing gravitational waves at infinity and downgoing gravitational waves at the holes' horizons are replaced by standing waves so as to guarantee that the spacetime has a helical Killing vector field. Because the horizon generators will not, in general, be tidally locked to the holes' orbital motion, the standin…
We derive a geometrical version of the Regge-Wheeler and Zerilli equations, which allows us to study gravitational perturbations on an arbitrary spherically symmetric slicing of a Schwarzschild black hole. We explain how to obtain the gauge-invariant part of the metric perturbations from the amplitudes obeying our generalized Regge-Wheeler and Zerilli equations and vice-versa. We also give a general expression for the radiated energy at infinity, and establish the relation between our geometrical equations and the Teukolsky formalism. The results presented in this paper are expected to be usef…
We investigate the past and future Rindler horizons for radial Rindler trajectories in the Schwarzschild spacetime. We assume the Rindler trajectory to be linearly uniformly accelerated (LUA) throughout its motion, in the sense of the curved spacetime generalisation of the Letaw-Frenet equations. The analytical solution for the radial LUA trajectories along with its past and future intercepts ${\cal C}$ with the past null infinity ${\cal J^-}$ and future null infinity ${\cal J^+}$ are presented. The Rindler horizons, in the presence of the black hole, are found to depend on both the magnitude …
As one of the fitting methods, the polynomial approximation is effective to process sophisticated problem. In this paper, we employ this approach to handle the scattering of scalar field around the Schwarzschild-de Sitter black-hole. The complex relationship between tortoise coordinate and radial coordinate is replaced by the approximate polynomial. The Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger-like equation, the real boundary conditions and the polynomial approximation construct a full Sturm-Liouville type problem. Then this boundary value problem can be solved numerically according to two limiting cases: the fir…
We demonstrate within the quantum field theoretical framework that an asymptotic particle falling into the black hole implants soft graviton hair on the horizon, conforming with the classical proposal of Hawking, Perry and Strominger. A key ingredient to this result is the construction of gravitational Wilson line dressings of an infalling scalar field, carrying a definite horizon supertranslation charge. It is shown that a typical Schwarzschild state is degenerate, and can be labeled by different soft supertranslation hairs parametrized for radial trajectories by the mass and energy of the in…
We deal with phantom energy accretion onto the Schwarzschild de-Sitter black hole. The energy flux conservation, relativistic Bernoulli equation and mass flux conservation equation are formulated to discuss the phantom accretion. We discuss the conditions for critical accretion. It is found that mass of the black hole decreases due to phantom accretion. There exist two critical points which lie in the exterior of horizons (black hole and cosmological horizons). The results for the phantom energy accretion onto the Schwarzschild black hole can be recovered by taking $Λ\rightarrow0$.
Quantum teleportation is investigated between Alice who is far from the horizon and Bob locates near the event horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole. The results show that the fidelity of the teleportation is reduced in this curved space-time. However, high fidelity can still be reached outside a massive black hole.
Given a static Schwarzschild spacetime of ADM mass M, it is well-known that no ingoing causal geodesic starting in the outer domain r>2M will cross the event horizon r=2M in finite Schwarzschild time. In the present paper we show that in gravitational collapse of Vlasov matter this behaviour can be very different. We construct initial data for which a black hole forms and all matter crosses the event horizon as Schwarzschild time goes to infinity, and we show that this is a necessary condition for geodesic completeness of the event horizon. In addition to a careful analysis of the asymptotic b…
We have investigated the behavior of three curvature invariants for Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrøm, Kerr, and Kerr-Newman black holes. We have also studied these invariants for a Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time, the $γ$ metric, and for a 2+1 charged dimensional black hole. The invariants are $I_{1}=R_{αβμν;λ}R^{αβμν;λ}$, $I_{2}=R_{μν;λ} R^{μν;λ}$, and $I_{3}=C_{αβμν;λ}C^{αβμν;λ}$. For all but the Kerr-Newman case these invariants serve as either horizon or stationary surface detectors. The Kerr-Newman case is more complicated. We show that $I_{1}$ vanishs on the horizon in any space-time…
