We report pressure evolution of charge density wave (CDW) order and emergence of superconductivity (SC) in 1T-VSe2 single crystal by studying resistance and magnetoresistance behavior under high pressure. With increasing quasi-hydrostatic pressure the CDW order enhances with increase ofthe ordering temperature up to 240K at 12 GPa. Upon further increase of pressure, the resistance anomaly due to CDW order gets suppressed drastically and superconductivity emerges at ~15 GPa, with the onset critical temperature (Tc) ~ 4K. The pressure dependence of Tc is found negligible, different from the significant increase or a dome-shape seen in iso-structural layered diselenide superconductors. The high pressure magnetoresistance and Hall measurements suggest successive electronic structural changes with Fermi surface modifications at 6 GPa and 12GPa. From the observed negative magnetoresistance in this pressure range and absence of coexisting CDW and SC phases, we propose that intra-layer spin-fluctuation can play a role in the emergence of superconductivity in the high pressure phase.
I review the principal experimental findings about superconductivity, suppression thereof, and related properties of RE_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu3O7 in a decision-tree manner, eliminating the models substantially incompatible with established experimental facts, eventually focussing on the pfσhybridization models and listing on a verbal level the interpretations of the existing experiments as they emerge from such models.
We study the suppression of superconductivity with ultrashort laser pulse in the presence of transport current. The theoretical model is based on the BCS relations for the superconducting state coupled with kinetic equations for nonequilibrium Bogoliubov quasiparticles and phonons. The results of numerical simulation for picosecond and femtosecond laser pulses of optical and infrared ranges are given. We discuss the effects of main problem parameters, including the current density.
Superconductivity in high temperature superconductors is achieved by introducing charge carriers into cuprate insulators containing CuO$_2$ planes. Perturbation in these CuO$_2$ planes suppresses superconductivity by strongly affecting the electronic environment. Here we have use photoinduced electronic modification of Cu ion in CuO$_2$ plane to investigate the effect of local perturbation in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$. This method has been used to suppress superconducting transition temperature T$_c$. We show that our results on photoinduced suppression of superconductivity are consis…
We study the effect of buckling and breathing phonons, relevant for cuprate superconductors, on the d-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model by employing dynamical cluster Monte Carlo calculations. The interplay of electronic correlations and the electron-phonon interaction produces two competing effects, an enhancement of the effective d-wave pairing interaction, which favors d-wave superconductivity, and a strong renormalization of the single-particle propagator, which suppress superconductivity. Due to the later effect we find that buckling and breathing phonons suppres…
We study the superconducting instability mediated by spin fluctuations in the Eliashberg theory for a minimal two-band model of iron-based superconductors. While antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations can drive superconductivity (SC) as is well established, we find that spin fluctuations necessarily contain a contribution to suppress SC even though SC can eventually occur at lower temperatures. This self-restraint effect stems from a general feature of the spin-fluctuation mechanism, namely the repulsive pairing interaction, which leads to phase frustration of the pairing gap and consequently the…
The suppression of superconductivity by substitution effects has been measured in high quality single crystals of U(Pt_{1-x} Pd_x)_3 with 0 <= x <= 0.002. While the superconducting transition temperature T_c varies linearly with residual resistivity r_0, consistent with pair-breaking by impurity potential scattering, the rate of suppression of T_c with r_0 is much larger for Pd substitution than for other impurity substitutions or by increased defect density. This effect is correlated with an increase in the inelastic scattering coefficient, and may be related to Pd-induced changes in the magn…
We observed a drastic Tc suppression caused by no more than 3 at.% of Zn doped to the optimized superconductor LaFeAsO0.85 (Tc = 26 K). The electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements suggested that it is likely due to impurity scatterings rather than losing the metallic nature, seeming to support the s+/- pairing model proposed for the Fe pnictide superconductor.
We investigate the effect of substituting Si for Ge in the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe. Dc-magnetization, ac-susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements on polycrystalline UCoGe$_{1-x}$Si$_x$ samples show that ferromagnetic order and superconductivity are progressively depressed with increasing Si content and simultaneously vanish at a critical concentration $x_{cr} \simeq 0.12$. The non-Fermi liquid temperature variation in the electrical resistivity near $x_{cr}$ and the smooth depression of the ordered moment point to a continuous ferromagnetic quantum phase transition. Su…
The competition of superconductivity and magnetism in superlattices composed of alternating YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-d}$ and La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films is investigated using low-energy optical spectroscopy. The thickness of the superconducting YBCO layers is varied from 30 nm to 20 nm while the thickness of the magnetic LCMO layers is kept constant at 20 nm. We clearly observe that the superconducting condensate density in the superconducting state of superlattice is drastically reduced by the magnetic subsystem which may be connected with proximity effects that distort the gap symme…
High quality single crystals of UPt_3 have been prepared by vertical float-zone refining in ultra-high vacuum. We find that the superconducting transition temperature can be varied systematically by annealing, revealing that the transition temperature intrinsic to UPt_3 is 563 +/- 5 mK. The suppression of the superconducting transition from defects is consistent with a modified Abrikosov-Gor'kov formula that includes anisotropic pairing, Fermi surface anisotropy, and anisotropic scattering by defects.
Magnetotransport of superconducting Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4+y} (NdCeCuO) films is studied in the temperature interval 0.3-30 K. The microscopic theory of the quantum corrections to conductivity, both in the Cooper and in the diffusion channels, qualitatively describes the main features of the experiment including the negative magnetoresistance in the high field limit. Comparison with the model of the field-induced superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) is included and a crossover between these two theoretical approaches is discussed.
To study the nature of partially substituted Yb-ions in a Ce-based Kondo lattice, we fabricated high quality Ce_{1-x}Yb_xCoIn_5 epitaxial thin films using molecular beam epitaxy. We find that the Yb-substitution leads to a linear decrease of the unit cell volume, indicating that Yb-ions are divalent forming Kondo-holes in Ce_{1-x}Yb_xCoIn_5, and leads to a strong suppression of the superconductivity and Kondo coherence. These results, combined with the measurements of Hall effect, indicate that Yb-ions act as nonmagnetic impurity scatters in the coherent Kondo lattice without serious suppressi…
Superconductivity at 33 K in Sr2VO3FeAs is completely suppressed by small amounts of V-doping in Sr2VO3[Fe0.93(+/-0.01)V0.07(+/-0.01)]As. The crystal structures and exact stoichiometries are determined by combined neutron- and x-ray powder diffraction. Sr2VO3FeAs is shown to be very sensitive to Fe/V mixing, which interferes with or even suppresses superconductivity. This inhomogeneity may be intrinsic and explains scattered reports regarding Tc and reduced superconducting phase fractions in Sr2VO3FeAs. Neutron diffraction data collected at 4 K indicates incommensurate mag- netic ordering of t…
Using a dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo approximation we investigate the d-wave superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ in the doped 2D repulsive Hubbard model with a weak inhomogeneity. The inhomogeneity is introduced in the hoppings $\tp$ and $t$ in the form of a checkerboard pattern where $t$ is the hopping within a $2\times2$ plaquette and $\tp$ is the hopping between the plaquettes. We find inhomogeneity suppresses $T_c$. The characteristic spin excitation energy and the strength of d-wave pairing interaction decrease with decreasing $T_c$ suggesting a strong correlation betwee…
Mixing of topological states with superconductivity could result in topological superconductivity with the elusive Majorana fermions potentially applicable in fault-tolerant quantum computing. One possible candidate considered for realization of topological superconductivity is thin bismuth films on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212). Here, we present angle-resolved and core-level photoemission spectroscopy studies of thin Bi films grown {\it in-situ} on as-grown Bi2212 that show the absence of proximity effect. We find that the electron transfer from the film to the substrate and the resu…
Motivated by recent experimental detection of Neel-type ($(π,π)$) magnetic fluctuations in some iron pnictides, we study the impact of competing $(π,π)$ and $(π,0)$ spin fluctuations on the superconductivity of these materials. We show that, counter-intuitively, even short-range, weak Neel fluctuations strongly suppress the $s^{+-}$ state, with the main effect arising from a repulsive contribution to the $s^{+-}$ pairing interaction, complemented by low frequency inelastic scattering. Further increasing the strength of the Neel fluctuations leads to a low-$T_{c}$ d-wave state, with a possible …
Recently, ultra-small-diameter Single Wall Nano Tubes with diameter of $ \sim 0.4 nm$ have been produced and many unusual properties were observed, such as superconductivity, leading to a transition temperature $T_c\sim 15^oK$, much larger than that observed in the bundles of larger diameter tubes. By a comparison between two different approaches, we discuss the issue whether a superconducting behavior in these carbon nanotubes can arise by a purely electronic mechanism. The first approach is based on the Luttinger Model while the second one, which emphasizes the role of the lattice and short …
We measured the pressure dependence of in-plane resistivity $ρ_{ab}$ in the recently-discovered iron-based superconductor Ca$_{10}$(Ir$_{4}$As$_{8}$)(Fe$_{2-x}$Ir$_{x}$As$_{2}$)$_{5}$, which shows a unique structural phase transition in the absence of magnetic ordering, with a superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ = 16 K and structural phase transition temperature $T_{\rm s}$ $\simeq$ 100 K at ambient pressure. $T_{\rm c}$ and $T_{\rm s}$ are suppressed on applying pressure and disappear at approximately 0.5 GPa, suggesting a relationship between superconductivity and structure. C…
The structural and magneto-transport properties of type-II Dirac semimetal candidate Ir2In8S have been investigated under high pressure. The ambient tetragonal structure (P4_2/mnm) is found to be stable up to 7 GPa, above which the system takes an orthorhombic Pnnm structure, possibly destroying the Dirac cones due to the loss of the four-fold screw symmetry. In the tetragonal structure, a gradual suppression of the transverse magneto-resistance and a rapid change in the magnetic field dependence above 50K suggest possible T-dependent Fermi surface modification. In the high pressure phase, the…
We have studied in fields up to 60T the variation of the transverse magnetoresistance (MR) of underdoped YBCO6.6 crystals either pure or with Tc reduced down to 3.5K by electron irradiation. We evidence that the normal state MR is restored above a threshold field H'c(T), which is found to vanish at T'c>>Tc. In the pure YBCO6.6 sample a 50 Tesla field is already required to completely suppress the superconducting fluctuations at Tc. While disorder does not depress the pseudogap temperature, it reduces drastically the phase coherence established at Tc and weakly H'c(0), T'c and the onset Tnu of …
A pivotal step toward understanding unconventional superconductors would be to decipher how superconductivity emerges from the unusual normal state upon cooling. In the cuprates, traces of superconducting pairing appear above the macroscopic transition temperature $T_c$, yet extensive investigation has led to disparate conclusions. The main difficulty has been the separation of superconducting contributions from complex normal state behaviour. Here we avoid this problem by measuring the nonlinear conductivity, an observable that is zero in the normal state. We uncover for several representativ…
Superconductivity originates from pairing of electrons. Pairing channel on Fermi surface and pairing glue are thus two pivotal issues for understanding a superconductor. Recently, high-temperature superconductivity over 40 K was found in electron-doped FeSe superconductors including K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$, Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OHFeSe, and 1 monolayer FeSe thin film. However, their pairing mechanism remains controversial. Here, we studied the systematic evolution of electronic structure in potassium-coated FeSe single crystal. The doping level is controlled precisely by in situ evaporating potass…
Charge frustration due to further neighbor Coulomb repulsion can have dramatic effects on the electronic properties of Na$_x$CoO$_2$ in the full doping range. It can significantly reduce the effective mobility of the charge carriers, leading to a low degeneracy temperature $ε_F \lesssim T$. Such strongly renormalized Fermi liquid has rather unusual properties--from the point of view of the ordinary metals with $ε_F \gg T$--but similar to the properties that are actually observed in the Na$_x$CoO$_2$ system. For example, we show that the anomalous thermopower and Hall effect observed in Na$_{0.…
Although the pairing glue for the attractive quasiparticle interaction responsible for unconventional superconductivity in heavy electron materials has been identified as the spin fluctuations that arise from their proximity to a magnetic quantum critical point, there has been no model to describe their superconducting transition at Tc that is comparable to that found by Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer (BCS) for conventional superconductors where phonons provide the pairing glue. Here we propose a phenomenological BCS-like expression for Tc in heavy electron materials, that is based on the unu…
The suppression of superconductivity by nonmagnetic disorder is investigated systematically in the organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$. We introduce a nonmagnetic disorder arising from molecule substitution in part with deuterated BEDT-TTF or BMDT-TTF for BEDT-TTF molecules and molecular defects introduced by X-ray irradiation. A quantitative evaluation of the scattering time $τ_{\rm dHvA}$ is carried out by de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measurement. A large reduction in $T_{\rm c}$ with a linear dependence on $1/τ_{\rm dHvA}$ is found in the small-disorder region below $1/…
We report local probe ($μ$SR) measurements on the recently discovered tetragonal FeS superconductor which has been predicted to be electronically very similar to superconducting FeSe. Most remarkably, we find that low moment ($10^{-2}-10^{-3}μ_\mathrm{B})$ disordered magnetism with a transition temperature of $T_\mathrm{N}\approx 20$ K microscopically coexists with bulk superconductivity below $T_\mathrm{c}=4.3(1)$ K. From transverse field $μ$SR we obtain an in-plane penetration depth $λ_\mathrm{ab}(0)=223(2)$ nm for FeS. The temperature dependence of the corresponding superfluid density $λ_\m…
We measure the nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) signal on the Zn site in nearly optimally doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.92}$, when Cu is substituted by 3\% of isotopically pure $^{67}$Zn. We observe that Zn creates large insulating islands, confirming two earlier conjectures: that doping provokes an orbital transition in the CuO$_2$ plane, which is locally reversed by Zn substitution, and that the islands are antiferromagnetic. Also, we find that the Zn impurity locally induces a breaking of the D$_4$ symmetry. Cluster and DFT calculations show that the D$_4$ symmetry breaking is due to the same …
High-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements reveal an unusually strong response of the lattice to superconductivity in Ba[Fe(1-x)Cox]2As2. The orthorhombic distortion of the lattice is suppressed and, for Co-doping near x = 0.063, the orthorhombic structure evolves smoothly back to a tetragonal structure. We propose that the coupling between orthorhombicity and superconductivity is indirect and arises due to the magneto-elastic coupling, in the form of emergent nematic order, and the strong competition between magnetism and superconductivity.
Superconductivity emerges from the cuprate antiferromagnetic Mott state with hole doping. The resulting electronic structure is not understood, although changes in the state of oxygen atoms appear paramount. Hole doping first destroys the Mott state yielding a weak insulator where electrons localize only at low temperatures without a full energy gap. At higher doping, the 'pseudogap', a weakly conducting state with an anisotropic energy gap and intra-unit-cell breaking of 90\degree-rotational (C4v) symmetry appears. However, a direct visualization of the emergence of these phenomena with incre…
I describe the issues of the competing orders in normal state of a parent and Ni-doped iron pnictide superconductor, SrF e 2 As 2 , using LMTO band structure calculation plus multi orbital dynamical mean-field theory. Strong, electronic correlations along with minimal antiferromagnetic instability create a partially gapped Fermi surface, in qualitative agreement with earlier experiments. A good semiquantitative similarity in both normal and ordered state with the earlier experimental transport data is observed along with suppression of magnetic ordering and explained within a correlated, mul- …
We report magnetic and calorimetric measurements down to T = 1 mK on the canonical heavy-electron metal YbRh2Si2. The data reveal the development of nuclear antiferromagnetic order slightly above 2 mK. The latter weakens the primary electronic antiferromagnetism, thereby paving the way for heavy-electron superconductivity below Tc = 2 mK. Our results demonstrate that superconductivity driven by quantum criticality is a general phenomenon.
Possible routes to superconductivity in the surface layers of V-doped Mg$_{1-δ}$Ti$_2$O$_4$ through multiple charge transfers and suppression of Jahn-Teller activity
We introduce a variational state for one-dimensional two-orbital Hubbard models that intuitively explains the recent computational discovery of pairing in these systems when hole doped. Our Ansatz is an optimized linear superposition of Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki valence bond states, rendering the combination a valence bond liquid dubbed Orbital Resonant Valence Bond. We show that the undoped (one electron/orbital) quantum state of two sites coupled into a global spin singlet is exactly written employing only spin-1/2 singlets linking orbitals at nearest-neighbor sites. Generalizing to longer…
Based on low temperature resistivity, heat capacity and magnetization investigations we show that the unusually strong suppression of superconductivity in Lu$_x$Zr$_{1-x}$B$_{12}$ BSC-type superconductors in the range $x$$<$0.08 is caused by the emergence of static spin polarization in the vicinity of non-magnetic lutetium impurities. The analysis of received results points to a formation of static magnetic moments with $μ_{eff}$$\approx$$3μ_B$ per Lu-ion. The size of these spin polarized nanodomains was estimated to be about 5 $Å$.
Connections between crystal chemistry and critical temperature $T_c$ have been in the focus of superconductivity, one of the most widely studied phenomena in physics, chemistry and materials science alike. In most Fe-based superconductors, materials chemistry and physics conspire so that $T_c$ correlates with the average anion height above the Fe plane, i. e. with the geometry of the FeAs4 or FeCh4 (Ch = Te, Se, or S) tetrahedron. By synthesizing Fe$_{1-y}$Se$_{1-x}$S$_x$ (0$\leq$$x$$\leq$1, $y$$\leq$0.1), we find that in alloyed crystals $T_c$ is not correlated with the anion height like it i…
FeSe is a unique superconductor that can be manipulated to enhance its superconductivity using different routes while its monolayer form grown on different substrates reaches a record high temperature for a two-dimensional system. In order to understand the role played by the substrate and the reduced dimensionality on superconductivity, we examine the superconducting properties of exfoliated FeSe thin flakes by reducing the thickness from bulk down towards 9 nm. Magnetotransport measurements performed in magnetic fields up to 16T and temperatures down to 2K help to build up complete supercond…
We discuss recent results on the heavy fermion superconductor CeRhIn$_5$ which presents ideal conditions to study the strong coupling between the suppression of antiferromagnetic order and the appearance of unconventional superconductivity. The appearance of superconductivity as function of pressure is strongly connected to the suppression of the magnetic order. Under magnetic field, the re-entrance of magnetic order inside the superconducting state shows that antiferromagnetism nucleates in the vortex cores. The suppression of antiferromagnetism in CeRhIn$_5$ by Sn doping is compared to that …
The occurrence of bulk superconductivity at ~22 K is reported in polycrystalline samples of BaFe2-xRuxAs2 for nominal Ru content in the range of x=0.75 to 1.125. A systematic suppression of the spin density wave transition temperature (TSDW) precedes the appearance of superconductivity in the system. A phase diagram is proposed based on the measured TSDW and superconducting transition temperature (TC) variations as a function of Ru composition. Band structure calculations, indicate introduction of electron carriers in the system upon Ru substitutiom. The calculated magnetic moment on Fe shows …
Topological materials which are also superconducting are of great current interest, since they may exhibit a non-trivial topologically-mediated superconducting phase. Although there have been many reports of pressure-tuned or chemical-doping-induced superconductivity in a variety of topological materials, there have been few examples of intrinsic, ambient pressure superconductivity in a topological system having a stoichiometric composition. Here, we report that the pure intermetallic CaSn3 not only exhibits topological fermion properties but also has a superconducting phase at 1.178 K under a…
We present a systematic study on the physical properties of EuFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$ (0$\leq$\emph{x}$\leq$0.2) by electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and thermopower measurements. The undoped compound EuFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ undergoes a spin-density-wave (SDW) transition associated with Fe moments at 195 K, followed by antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ moments at 20 K. Ni doping at the Fe site simultaneously suppresses the SDW transition and AFM ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ moments. For $x\geq$0.06, the magnetic ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ moments evolves from antiferromagnetic to f…
The influence of static magnetic correlations on the temperature-dependent superfluid density ρ_s(T) is calculated for d-wave superconductors. In self-consistent calculations, itinerant holes form incommensurate spin density waves (SDW) which coexist with superconductivity. In the clean limit, the density of states is gapped, and ρ_s(T << T_c) is exponentially activated. In inhomogeneously-doped cases, the SDW are disordered and both the density of states and ρ_s(T) obtain forms indistinguishable from those in dirty but pure d-wave superconductors, in accordance with experiments. We conclude t…
Hydrogen in metals has attracted much attention for a long time from both basic scientific and technological points of view. Its electronic state has been investigated in terms of a proton embedded in the electron gas mostly by the local density approximation (LDA) to the density functional theory. At high electronic densities, it is well described by a bare proton H^+ screened by metallic electrons (charge resonance), while at low densities two electrons are localized at the proton site to form a closed-shell negative ion H^- protected from surrounding metallic electrons by the Pauli exclusio…
The emergence of superconductivity at high magnetic fields in URhGe is regarded as a paradigm for new state formation approaching a quantum critical point. Until now, a divergence of the quasiparticle mass at the metamagnetic transition was considered essential for superconductivity to survive at magnetic fields above 30 tesla. Here we report the observation of quantum oscillations in URhGe revealing a tiny pocket of heavy quasiparticles that shrinks continuously with increasing magnetic field, and finally disappears at a topological Fermi surface transition close to or at the metamagnetic fie…
The interplay of different electronic phases underlies the physics of unconventional superconductors. One of the most intriguing examples is a high-Tc superconductor FeTe1-xSex: it undergoes both a topological transition, linked to the electronic band inversion, and an electronic nematic phase transition, associated with rotation symmetry breaking, around the same critical composition xc where superconducting Tc peaks. At this regime, nematic fluctuations and symmetry-breaking strain could have an enormous impact, but this is yet to be fully explored. Using spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunne…
We show magnetotransport results on Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ ($0.0 \leq x \leq 0.13$) single crystals. We identify the low temperature resistance step at 23 K in the parent compound with the onset of filamentary superconductivity (FLSC), which is suppressed by an applied magnetic field in a similar manner to the suppression of bulk superconductivity (SC) in doped samples. FLSC is found to persist across the phase diagram until the long range antiferromagnetic order is completely suppressed. A significant suppression of FLSC occurs for $0.02<x<0.04$, the doping concentration where bulk SC…
Neutron diffraction and high-resolution x-ray diffraction studies find that, similar to the closely related underdoped Ba(Fe[1-x]Cox)2As2 superconducting compounds, Ba(Fe0.961Rh0.039)2As2 shows strong evidence of competition and coexistence between superconductivity and antiferromagnetic order below the superconducting transition, Tc = 14 K. The transition temperatures for both the magnetic order and orthorhombic distortion are in excellent agreement with those inferred from resistivity measurements, and both order parameters manifest a distinct decrease in magnitude below Tc. These data sugge…
Anisotropic strain is an external field capable of selectively addressing the role of nematic fluctuations in promoting superconductivity. We demonstrate this using polarization-resolved elasto-Raman scattering to probe the evolution of nematic fluctuations under strain in the normal and superconducting states of the paradigmatic iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. In the non-superconducting parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ we observe a strain-induced suppression of the nematic susceptibility which follows the expected behavior of an Ising order parameter under a symmetry b…
The newly discovered BaPt$_2$As$_2$ shows a structural distortion at around 275~K, followed by the emergence of superconductivity at lower temperatures. Here we identify the presence of charge density wave (CDW) order at room temperature and ambient pressure using single crystal x-ray diffraction, with both a superlattice and an incommensurate modulation, where there is a change of the superlattice structure below $\simeq$ 275~K. Upon applying pressure, BaPt$_2$As$_2$ shows a rich temperature-pressure phase diagram with multiple pressure-induced transitions at high temperatures, the emergence …
We investigate the physical properties and electronic structure upon Cr-doping in the iron arsenide layers of BaFe2As2. This form of hole-doping leads to suppression of the magnetic/structural phase transition in BaFe2-xCrxAs2 for x > 0, but does not lead to superconductivity. For various x values, temperature dependence of the resistivity, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, Hall coefficient, and single crystal x-ray diffraction data are presented. The materials show signatures of approaching a ferromagnetic state with x, including a metamagnetic transition for x as little as 0.36, an enh…
In view of recent developments in the investigation on cuprate high-T${}_{\rm c}$ superconductors and the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO${}_{3}$, we study the effect of dilute impurity doping on the spin-Peierls state in quasi-one dimensional systems. We identify a common origin for the emergence of antiferromagnetic order upon the introduction of static vacancies, and superconductivity for mobile holes.
Recent reports about observations of superconductivity in PrBa2Cu3O7 raise a number of questions: (i) of various theories striving to explain the Tc suppression in PrxY{1-x}Ba2Cu3O7, are there any compatible with possible superconductivity in stoichiometric PrBa2Cu3O7? (ii) if this superconductivity is not an experimental artifact, are the superconducting carriers (holes) of the same character as in the other high-Tc cuprates, or do they represent another electronic subsystem? (iii) is the underlying mechanism the same as in other high-Tc superconductors? I present an answer to the first two q…
