It was shown in [J. A. Ramírez, B. Rider and B. Virág. J. Amer. Math. Soc. 24, 919-944 (2011)] that the edge of the spectrum of $β$ ensembles converges in the large $N$ limit to the bottom of the spectrum of the stochastic Airy operator. In the present paper, we obtain a complete description of the bottom of this spectrum when the temperature $1/β$ goes to $\infty$: we show that the point process of appropriately rescaled eigenvalues converges to a Poisson point process on $\mathbb{R}$ of intensity $e^x dx$ and that the eigenfunctions converge to Dirac masses centered at IID points with exponential laws. Furthermore, we obtain a precise description of the microscopic behavior of the eigenfunctions near their localization centers.
We prove that the spectrum of the stochastic Airy operator is rigid in the sense of Ghosh and Peres (Duke Math. J., 166(10):1789--1858, 2017) for Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions. This proves the rigidity of the Airy-$β$ point process and the soft-edge limit of rank-$1$ perturbations of Gaussian $β$-Ensembles for any $β>0$, and solves an open problem mentioned in a previous work of Bufetov, Nikitin, and Qiu (Mosc. Math. J., 19(2):217--274, 2019). Our proof uses a combination of the semigroup theory of the stochastic Airy operator and the techniques for studying insertion and deletion to…
We determine the operator limit for large powers of random tridiagonal matrices as the size of the matrix grows. The result provides a novel expression in terms of functionals of Brownian motions for the Laplace transform of the Airy$_β$ process, which describes the largest eigenvalues in the $β$ ensembles of random matrix theory. Another consequence is a Feynman-Kac formula for the stochastic Airy operator of Ramírez, Rider, and Virág. As a side result, we find that the difference between the area underneath a standard Brownian excursion and one half of the integral of its squared local times…
We access the edge of Gaussian beta ensembles with one spike by analyzing high powers of the associated tridiagonal matrix models. In the classical cases beta=1, 2, 4, this corresponds to studying the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalues of additive rank one perturbations of the GOE/GUE/GSE random matrices. In the infinite-dimensional limit, we arrive at a one-parameter family of random Feynman-Kac type semigroups, which features the stochastic Airy semigroup of Gorin and Shkolnikov [13] as an extreme case. Our analysis also provides Feynman-Kac formulas for the spiked stochastic Airy opera…
In this note, it is shown that the stochastic Airy operator, which is the "Schrödinger operator" on the half-line whose potential term consists of Gaussian white noise plus a linear term tending to $+\infty$, can naturally be defined as a generalized Sturm-Liouville operator and that it is self-adjoint and has purely discrete spectrum with probability one. Thus "stochastic Airy spectrum" of Ramírez, Rider and Virág is the spectrum of an operator in the ordinary sense of the word.
In this paper we consider the stochastic six-vertex model in the quadrant started with step initial data. After a long time $T$, it is known that the one-point height function fluctuations are of order $T^{1/3}$ and governed by the Tracy-Widom distribution. We prove that the two-point distribution of the height function, rescaled horizontally by $T^{2/3}$ and vertically by $T^{1/3}$, converges to the two-point distribution of the Airy process. The starting point of this result is a recent connection discovered by Borodin-Bufetov-Wheeler between the stochastic six-vertex model and the ascending…
We introduce a new method for studying universality of random matrices. Let T_n be the Jacobi matrix associated to the Dyson beta ensemble with uniformly convex polynomial potential. We show that after scaling, T_n converges to the Stochastic Airy operator. In particular, the top edge of the Dyson beta ensemble and the corresponding eigenvectors are universal. As a byproduct, our work leads to conjectured operator limits for the entire family of soft edge distributions.
In this article we review the ideas in Tsai (2018) toward proving the one-point, lower-tail large deviation principle for the Kardar--Parisi--Zhang equation.
The Airy$_β$ point process, originally introduced by Ramírez, Rider, and Virág, is defined as the spectrum of the stochastic Airy operator $\mathcal{H}_β$ acting on a subspace of $L^2[0,\infty)$ with Dirichlet boundary condition. In this paper we study the coupled family of point processes defined as the eigenvalues of $\mathcal{H}_β$ acting on a subspace of $L^2[t,\infty)$. These point processes are coupled through the Brownian term of $\mathcal{H}_β$. We show that these point processes as a function of $t$ are differentiable with explicitly computable derivative. Moreover when recentered by …
We prove that the largest eigenvalues of the beta ensembles of random matrix theory converge in distribution to the low-lying eigenvalues of the random Schroedinger operator -d^2/dx^2 + x + (2/beta^{1/2}) b_x' restricted to the positive half-line, where b_x' is white noise. In doing so we extend the definition of the Tracy-Widom(beta) distributions to all beta>0, and also analyze their tails. Last, in a parallel development, we provide a second characterization of these laws in terms of a one-dimensional diffusion. The proofs rely on the associated tridiagonal matrix models and a universality …
We give a new sufficient condition of the quasi-Gibbs property. This result is a refinement of one given in a previous paper (\cite{o.rm}), and will be used in a forth coming paper to prove the quasi-Gibbs property of Airy random point fields (RPFs) and other RPFs appearing under soft-edge scaling. The quasi-Gibbs property of RPFs is one of the key ingredients to solve the associated infinite-dimensional stochastic differential equation (ISDE). Because of the divergence of the free potentials and the interactions of the finite particle approximation under soft-edge scaling, the result of the p…
We study the decay of the covariance of the Airy$_1$ process, $\mathcal{A}_1$, a stationary stochastic process on $\mathbb{R}$ that arises as a universal scaling limit in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. We show that the decay is super-exponential and determine the leading order term in the exponent by showing that $\textrm{Cov}(\mathcal{A}_1(0),\mathcal{A}_1(u))= e^{-(\frac{4}{3}+o(1))u^3}$ as $u\to\infty$. The proof employs a combination of probabilistic techniques and integrable probability estimates. The upper bound uses the connection of $\mathcal{A}_1$ to planar exponent…
We rigorously compute the integrable system for the limiting $(N\rightarrow\infty)$ distribution function of the extreme momentum of $N$ noninteracting fermions when confined to an anharmonic trap $V(q)=q^{2n}$ for $n\in\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 1}$ at positive temperature. More precisely, the edge momentum statistics in the harmonic trap $n=1$ are known to obey the weak asymmetric KPZ crossover law which is realized via the finite temperature Airy kernel determinant or equivalently via a Painlevé-II integro-differential transcendent, cf. \cite{LW,ACQ}. For general $n\geq 2$, a novel higher order finit…
The maximal point of the Airy2 process minus a parabola is believed to describe the scaling limit of the end-point of the directed polymer in a random medium, which was proved to be true for a few specific cases. Recently two different formulas for the joint distribution of the location and the height of this maximal point were obtained, one by Moreno Flores, Quastel and Remenik, and the other by Schehr. The first formula is given in terms of the Airy function and an associated operator, and the second formula is expressed in terms of the Lax pair equations of the Painleve II equation. We give…
We investigate the marginal distribution of the bottom eigenvalues of the stochastic Airy operator when the inverse temperature $β$ tends to $0$. We prove that the minimal eigenvalue, whose fluctuations are governed by the Tracy-Widom $β$ law, converges weakly, when properly centered and scaled, to the Gumbel distribution. More generally we obtain the convergence in law of the marginal distribution of any eigenvalue with given index $k$. Those convergences are obtained after a careful analysis of the explosion times process of the Riccati diffusion associated to the stochastic Airy operator. W…
In this paper we study pseudo-processes related to odd-order heat-type equations composed with Lévy stable subordinators. The aim of the article is twofold. We first show that the pseudo-density of the subordinated pseudo-process can be represented as an expectation of damped oscillations with generalized gamma distributed parameters. This stochastic representation also arises as the solution to a fractional diffusion equation, involving a higher-order Riesz-Feller operator, which generalizes the odd-order heat-type equation. We then prove that, if the stable subordinator has a suitable expone…
We establish a symmetry in a variety of integrable stochastic systems: Certain multi-point distributions of natural observables are unchanged under a shift of a subset of observation points. The property holds for stochastic vertex models, (1+1)d directed polymers in random media, last passage percolation, the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, and the Airy sheet. In each instance it leads to computations of previously inaccessible joint distributions. The proofs rely on a combination of the Yang-Baxter integrability of the inhomogeneous colored stochastic six-vertex model and Lagrange interpolatio…
By applying an idea of Borodin and Olshanski [J. Algebra 313 (2007), 40-60], we study various scaling limits of determinantal point processes with trace class projection kernels given by spectral projections of selfadjoint Sturm-Liouville operators. Instead of studying the convergence of the kernels as functions, the method directly addresses the strong convergence of the induced integral operators. We show that, for this notion of convergence, the Dyson, Airy, and Bessel kernels are universal in the bulk, soft-edge, and hard-edge scaling limits. This result allows us to give a short and unifi…
We study the scaling limit of the spectrum of the β-Jacobi ensemble at the soft-edge and hard-edge for general values of β. We show that the limiting point processes correspond respectively to the stochastic Airy and Bessel point processes introduced in Ramirez-Rider-Virag and Ramirez-Rider.
An explicit Fredholm determinant formula is derived for the multipoint distribution of the height function of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) with arbitrary right-finite initial condition. The method is by solving the biorthogonal ensemble/non-intersecting path representation found by [Sas05; BFPS07]. The resulting kernel involves transition probabilities of a random walk forced to hit a curve defined by the initial data. In the KPZ 1:2:3 scaling limit the formula leads in a transparent way to a Fredholm determinant formula, in terms of analogous kernels based on Browni…
We introduce a stochastic process and functional that should describe the semigroup generated by the stochastic Bessel operator. Recently Gorin and Shkolnikov showed that the largest eigenvalues for certain random matrix ensembles with soft edge behavior can be understood by analyzing large powers of tridiagonal matrices, which converge to operators in the stochastic Airy semigroup. In this article we make some progress towards realizing Gorin and Shkolnikov's program at the random matrix hard edge. We analyze large powers of a suitable tridiagonal matrix model (a slight modification of the $β…
An operator space analysis of quantum stochastic cocycles is undertaken. These are cocycles with respect to an ampliated CCR flow, adapted to the associated filtration of subspaces, or subalgebras. They form a noncommutative analogue of stochastic semigroups in the sense of Skorohod. One-to-one correspondences are established between classes of cocycle of interest and corresponding classes of one-parameter semigroups on associated matrix spaces. Each of these 'global' semigroups may be viewed as the expectation semigroup of an associated quantum stochastic cocycle on the corresponding matrix s…
The conjugate problem in stochastic optimal control can be formulated in terms of operators conjugated to the operators of stochastic integration [1, 2, 3]. In this paper we study some of such operators acting on the spaces of progressively measurable random functions.
We prove tail triviality of determinantal point processes $ μ$ on continuous spaces. Tail triviality had been proved for such processes only on discrete spaces, and hence we have generalized the result to continuous spaces. To do this, we construct tree representations, that is, discrete approximations of determinantal point processes enjoying a determinantal structure. There are many interesting examples of determinantal point processes on continuous spaces such as zero points of the hyperbolic Gaussian analytic function with Bergman kernel, and the thermodynamic limit of eigenvalues of Gauss…
This paper present a construction and the analysis of a class of non-Gaussian positive-definite matrix-valued homogeneous random fields with uncertain spectral measure for stochastic elliptic operators. Then the stochastic elliptic boundary value problem in a bounded domain of the 3D-space is introduced and analyzed for stochastic homogenization.
The purpose of this paper is to establish the theory of stochastic pseudo-differential operators and give its applications in stochastic partial differential equations. First, we introduce some concepts on stochastic pseudo-differential operators and prove their fundamental properties. Also, we present the boundedness theory, invertibility of stochastic elliptic operators and the Garding inequality. Moreover, as an application of the theory of stochastic pseudo-differential operators, we give a Calderon-type uniqueness theorem on the Cauchy problem of stochastic partial differential equations.…
This paper is devoted to the study of the problem of prevalence in the class of quadratic stochastic operators acting on the L1 space for the uniform topology. We obtain that the set of norm quasi-mixing quadratic stochastic operators is a dense and open set in the topology induced by a very natural metric. This shows the typical long-term behaviour of iterates of quadratic stochastic operators.
This paper introduces the notion of a filtration-consistent dynamic operator with a floor, by suitably formulating four axioms. It is shown that under some suitable conditions, a filtration-consistent dynamic operator with a continuous upper-bounded floor is necessarily represented by the solution of a backward stochastic differential equation reflected upwards on the floor.
We introduce a stochastic integral with respect to cylindrical Lévy processes with finite $p$-th weak moment for $p\in [1,2]$. The space of integrands consists of $p$-summing operators between Banach spaces of martingale type $p$. We apply the developed integration theory to establish the existence of a solution for a stochastic evolution equation driven by a cylindrical Lévy process.
Conditions guaranteeing convergence of linear stochastic Volterra operators are studied. Necessary and sufficient conditions for mean square convergence are established, while almost sure convergence of the linear operator is shown to imply mean square convergence. Sufficient conditions for almost sure convergence of the stochastic linear operator are established. The sharpness or necessity of these conditions is explored by means of examples.
In this paper, by using a Taylor development type formula, we show how it is possible to associate differential operators with stochastic differential equations driven by a fractional Brownian motion. As an application, we deduce that invariant measures for such SDEs must satisfy an infinite dimensional system of partial differential equations.
We study weak and strong solutions of nonlinear non-compact operator equations in abstract spaces of adapted random points. The main result of the paper is similar to Schauder's fixed-point theorem for compact operators. The illustrative examples explain how this analysis can be applied to stochastic differential equations.
In this paper, we deal with a class of mean-field backward stochastic differential equations with subdifferrential operator corresponding to a lower semi-continuous convex function. By means of Yosida approximation, the existence and uniqueness of the solution is established. As an application, we give a probability interpretation for the viscosity solutions of a class of nonlocal parabolic variational inequalities.
A recent characterisation of Fock-adapted contraction operator stochastic cocycles on a Hilbert space, in terms of their associated semigroups, yields a general principle for the construction of such cocycles by approximation of their stochastic generators. This leads to new existence results for quantum stochastic differential equations. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for a cocycle to satisfy such an equation.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of solution of quasilinear stochastic partial differential equations with obstacle (OSPDEs in short) in degenerate case. Using De Giorgi's iteration, we deduce the $L^p-$estimates for the time-space uniform norm of weak solutions.
We construct quantum stochastic integrals for the integrator being a martingale in a von Neumann algebra, and the integrand -- a suitable process with values in the same algebra, as densely defined operators affiliated with the algebra. In the case of a finite algebra we allow the integrator to be an $L^2$--martingale in which case the integrals are $L^2$--martingales too.
It has recently been shown that complete Bernstein functions of the Laplace operator map the Dirichlet boundary condition of a related elliptic PDE to the Neumann boundary condition. The importance of this mapping consists in being able to convert problems involving non-local operators, like fractional Laplacians, into ones that only involve differential operators. We generalise this result to diffusion operators associated with stochastic differential equations, using a method which is entirely based on stochastic analysis.
In this paper we prove a parabolic version of the Littlewood-Paley inequality for the operators of the type $ϕ(-Δ)$, where $ϕ$ is a Bernstein function. As an application, we construct an $L_p$-theory for the stochastic integro-differential equations of the type $du=(-ϕ(-Δ)u+f)dt +gdW_t$.
