We analyse the 100pc Gaia white dwarf volume-limited sample by means of VOSA (Virtual Observatory SED Analyser) with the aim of identifying candidates for displaying infrared excesses. Our search focuses on the study of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of 3,733 white dwarfs with reliable infrared photometry and GBP-GRP colours below 0.8 mag, a sample which seems to be nearly representative of the overall white dwarf population. Our search results in 77 selected candidates, 52 of which are new identifications. For each target we apply a two-component SED fitting implemented in VOSA to derive the effective temperatures of both the white dwarf and the object causing the excess. We calculate a fraction of infrared-excess white dwarfs due to the presence of a circumstellar disk of 1.6+-0.2%, a value which increases to 2.6+-0.3% if we take into account incompleteness issues. Our results are in agreement with the drop in the percentage of infrared excess detections for cool (<8,000K) and hot (>20,000K) white dwarfs obtained in previous analyses. The fraction of white dwarfs with brown dwarf companions we derive is ~0.1-0.2%.
We present the first metal-polluted single white dwarf star identified through Gaia DR2. GaiaJ1738-0826, selected from color and absolute magnitude cuts in the Gaia DR2 data, was discovered to have strong Ca~II absorption in initial spectroscopic characterization at Lick Observatory. Notably, GaiaJ1738-0826 resembles in many ways the first confirmed metal-polluted hydrogen atmosphere white dwarf, the DAZ G74-7.
Studies of excess infrared radiation around white dwarfs provide important constraints on the evolution of planetary systems and low-mass stars beyond the main sequence stage. In this paper series, we focus on identifying and characterizing bright white dwarfs with an infrared excess. Here, we present 188 infrared excess candidates from Gaia and unWISE, 147 of which are new discoveries. Further characterization of this sample can significantly increase the current list of white dwarf debris disks and white dwarfs with low-mass companions.
We determine the distribution of cooling ages of massive Gaia EDR3 white dwarfs identified with over 90% probability within 200 pc and with mass in the range 0.95-1.25 $M_\odot$. Using three sets of publicly available models, we consider sub-samples of these white dwarfs sorted into three equally spaced mass bins. Under the assumption of a constant white dwarf formation rate, we find an excess of white dwarfs both along the Q branch and below it, corresponding respectively to stars that are in the process of freezing and those that are completely frozen. We compare the cooling age distribution…
We analyze the volume-limited nearly complete 100 pc sample of 95 halo white dwarf candidates identified by the second data release of Gaia. Based on a detailed population synthesis model, we apply a method that relies on Gaia astrometry and photometry to accurately derive the individual white dwarf parameters (mass, radius, effective temperature, bolometric luminosity and age). This method is tested with 25 white dwarfs of our sample for which we took optical spectra and performed spectroscopic analysis. We build and analyse the halo white dwarf luminosity function, for which we find for the …
We use 156 044 white dwarf candidates with $\geq5σ$ significant parallax measurements from the Gaia mission to measure the velocity dispersion of the Galactic disc; $(σ_U,σ_V,σ_W) = (30.8, 23.9, 20.0)$ km s$^{-1}$. We identify 142 objects that are inconsistent with disc membership at the $>5σ$ level. This is the largest sample of field halo white dwarfs identified to date. We perform a detailed model atmosphere analysis using optical and near-infrared photometry and parallaxes to constrain the mass and cooling age of each white dwarf. The white dwarf cooling ages of our targets range from 7 My…
We used the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution catalogue, part of the Gaia Data Release 1, to search for candidate astrometric microlensing events expected to occur within the remaining lifetime of the Gaia satellite. Our search yielded one promising candidate. We predict that the nearby DQ type white dwarf LAWD 37 (WD 1142-645) will lens a background star and will reach closest approach on November 11th 2019 ($\pm$ 4 days) with impact parameter $380\pm10$ mas. This will produce an apparent maximum deviation of the source position of $2.8\pm0.1$ mas. In the most propitious circumstance, Gaia will…
We identify Gaia0007-1605AC as the first inner brown dwarf-white dwarf binary of a hierarchical triple system in which the outer component is another white dwarf (Gaia0007-1605B). From optical/near-infrared spectroscopy obtained at the Very Large Telescope with the X-Shooter instrument and/or from Gaia photometry plus SED fitting, we determine the effective temperatures and masses of the two white dwarfs (12018+-68 K, 0.54+-0.01 Msun for Gaia0007-1605A and 4445+-116 K, 0.56+-0.05 Msun for Gaia0007-1605B) and the effective temperature of the brown dwarf (1850+-50 K; corresponding to a spectral …
Effective temperatures and luminosities are calculated for 1,475,921 Tycho-2 and 107,145 Hipparcos stars, based on distances from Gaia Data Release 1. Parameters are derived by comparing multi-wavelength archival photometry to BT-Settl model atmospheres. The 1-sigma uncertainties for the Tycho-2 and Hipparcos stars are +/-137 K and +/-125 K in temperature and +/-35 per cent and +/-19 per cent in luminosity. The luminosity uncertainty is dominated by that of the Gaia parallax. Evidence for infrared excess between 4.6 and 25 microns is found for 4256 stars, of which 1883 are strong candidates. T…
We use Gaia Data Release 2 to identify 13,928 white dwarfs within 100 pc of the Sun. The exquisite astrometry from Gaia reveals for the first time a bifurcation in the observed white dwarf sequence in both Gaia and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) passbands. The latter is easily explained by a helium atmosphere white dwarf fraction of 36%. However, the bifurcation in the Gaia colour-magnitude diagram depends on both the atmospheric composition and the mass distribution. We simulate theoretical colour-magnitude diagrams for single and binary white dwarfs using a population synthesis approach…
Using a penalised maximum likelihood we estimate, for the first time, the velocity distribution of white dwarfs in the Solar neighbourhood. Our sample consists of 129 675 white dwarfs within 500 pc in Gaia Early Data Release 3 The white dwarf velocity distributions reveal a similar structure to the rest of the Solar neighbourhood stars, reflecting that white dwarfs are subjected to the same dynamical processes. In the velocity distribution for three magnitude-binned subsamples we however find a novel structure at $(U, V) = (7, -19)$ km s$^{-1}$ in fainter samples, potentially related to the Co…
We analyzed the velocity space of the thin and thick-disk Gaia white dwarf population within 100 pc looking for signatures of the Hercules stellar stream. We aimed to identify those objects belonging to the Hercules stream and, by taking advantage of white dwarf stars as reliable cosmochronometers, to derive a first age distribution. We applied a kernel density estimation to the $UV$ velocity space of white dwarfs. For the region where a clear overdensity of stars was found, we created a 5-D space of dynamic variables. We applied a hierarchichal clustering method, HDBSCAN, to this 5-D space, i…
Using Gaia DR2 data, we present an up-to-date sample of white dwarfs within 20 pc of the Sun. In total we identified 139 systems in Gaia DR2, nine of which are new detections, with the closest of these located at a distance of 13.05 pc. We estimated atmospheric parameters for all stellar remnants based on the Gaia parallaxes and photometry. The high precision and completeness of the Gaia astrometry allowed us to search for wide binary companions. We re-identified all known binaries where both components have accurate DR2 astrometry, and established the binarity of one of the nine newly identif…

The $Gaia$ mission has provided an unprecedented wealth of information about the white dwarf population of our Galaxy. In particular, our studies show that the sample up to 100\,pc from the Sun can be considered as practically complete. This fact allows us to estimate a precise fraction of double-degenerate ($1.18\pm 0.10$\%) and white dwarf plus main-sequence stars ($6.31\pm0.23$\%) among all white dwarfs through comoving pairs identification. With the aid of a detailed population synthesis code we are able to reproduce synthetic white dwarf populations with nearly identical fractions as the …
The results of the Gaia mission will have tremendous influence on many topics in white dwarf research. In this paper the current status of the Gaia mission is described. At the end a short outlook on the release scenario and the expected accuracy of the Gaia data is provided.
The Gaia Data Release 1 (DR1) sample of white dwarf parallaxes is presented, including 6 directly observed degenerates and 46 white dwarfs in wide binaries. This data set is combined with spectroscopic atmospheric parameters to study the white dwarf mass-radius relationship (MRR). Gaia parallaxes and G magnitudes are used to derive model atmosphere dependent white dwarf radii, which can then be compared to the predictions of a theoretical MRR. We find a good agreement between Gaia DR1 parallaxes, published effective temperatures (Teff) and surface gravities (log g), and theoretical MRRs. As it…
We present a catalogue of point-like Hα-excess sources in the Northern Galactic Plane. Our catalogue is created using a new technique that leverages astrometric and photomeric information from Gaia to select Hα-bright outliers in the INT Photometric Hα Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane (IPHAS), across the colour-absolute magnitude diagram. To mitigate the selection biases due to stellar population mixing and to extinction, the investigated objects are first partitioned with respect to their positions in the Gaia colour-absolute magnitude space, and in the Galactic coordinates space, respec…
The Gaia catalogue of nearby stars (GCNS) divided all objects with parallaxes $>$10mas into GCNS-selected and GCNS-rejected 100pc samples. Below the white dwarf (WD) sequence in the complete GCNS color-magnitude diagram (CMD), at $Gabs>14.7+4.7(G-RP)$, there appear 60 GCNS-selected faint blue white dwarfs (FBWDs). However this CMD region is also populated by 411 GCNS-rejected objects, mainly from crowded regions towards the Galactic centre and the Magellanic Clouds. The WD catalog of Gentile Fusillo et al. (2021) lists only 47 GCNS-selected but also 8 GCNS-rejected objects. I confirm 59 of the…
We present a critical review of the determination of fundamental parameters of white dwarfs discovered by the Gaia mission. We first reinterpret color-magnitude and color-color diagrams using photometric and spectroscopic information contained in the Montreal White Dwarf Database (MWDD), combined with synthetic magnitudes calculated from a self-consistent set of model atmospheres with various atmospheric compositions. The same models are then applied to measure the fundamental parameters of white dwarfs using the so-called photometric technique, which relies on the exquisite Gaia trigonometric…
We searched through the entire Gaia EDR3 candidate white dwarf catalogue for stars with proper motions and positions that are consistent with the stars having escaped from the Alpha Persei cluster within the past 81~Myr, the age of the cluster. In this search we found five candidate white dwarf escapees from Alpha Persei and obtained spectra for all five. We confirm that three are massive white dwarfs sufficiently young to have originated in the cluster. All three are more massive than any white dwarf previously associated with a cluster using Gaia astrometry, and possess some of the most mass…
The Gaia spacecraft presents an unprecedented opportunity to reveal the population of long period (a>1\,au) exoplanets orbiting stars across the H-R diagram, including white dwarfs. White dwarf planetary systems have played an important role in the study of planetary compositions, from their unique ability to provide bulk elemental abundances of planetary material in their atmospheres. Yet, very little is known about the population of planets around white dwarfs. This paper predicts the population of planets that Gaia will detect around white dwarfs, evolved from known planets orbiting main-se…
Since the Gaia data release 2, several works were published describing a bifurcation in the observed white dwarf colour$-$magnitude diagram for $\mbox{$G_{\mathrm{BP}}$}-\mbox{$G_{\mathrm{RP}}$} > 0$. Some possible explanations in the literature include the existence of a double population with different initial mass function or two distinct populations, one formed by hydrogen$-$ and one formed by helium$-$envelope white dwarfs. We propose instead spectral evolution to explain the bifurcation. From a population synthesis approach, we find that the spectral evolution occurs for effective temper…
Context. White dwarfs can be used to study the structure and evolution of the Galaxy by analysing their luminosity function and initial mass function. Among them, the very cool white dwarfs provide the information for the early ages of each population. Because white dwarfs are intrinsically faint only the nearby (about 20 pc) sample is reasonably complete. The Gaia space mission will drastically increase the sample of known white dwarfs through its 5-6 years survey of the whole sky up to magnitude V = 20-25. Aims. We provide a characterisation of Gaia photometry for white dwarfs to better prep…
We investigate the potential of high-precision astrometry with GAIA for detection of giant planetary companions to nearby white dwarfs. If one considers that, to date, no confirmed planets around single white dwarfs are known, the results from GAIA will be crucial to study the late-stage evolution of planetary systems and to verify the possibility that 2nd-generation planets are formed.
We cross-matched 1.3 million white dwarf (WD) candidates from Gaia EDR3 with spectral data from LAMOST DR7 within 3 arcsec. Applying machine learning described in our previous work, we spectroscopically identified 6,190 WD objects after visual inspection, among which 1,496 targets were firstly confirmed. 32 detailed classes were adopted for them, including but not limited to DAB and DB+M. We estimated the atmospheric parameters for the DA and DB type WD using Levenberg-Marquardt least-squares algorithm (LM). Finally, a catalog of WD spectra from LAMOST was provided online.
We present a catalogue of 73,221 white dwarf candidates extracted from the astrometric and photometric data of the recently published Gaia DR2 catalogue. White dwarfs were selected from the Gaia Hertzsprung-Russell diagram with the aid of the most updated population synthesis simulator. Our analysis shows that Gaia has virtually identified all white dwarfs within 100 pc from the Sun. Hence, our sub-population of 8,555 white dwarfs within this distance limit and the colour range considered, $-\,0.52<(G_{\rm BP}-G_{\rm RP})<0.80$, is the largest and most complete volume-limited sample of such ob…
Fundamental parameters and physical processes leading to the formation of white dwarfs (WDs) may be constrained and refined by discovering WDs in open clusters (OCs). Cluster membership can be utilized to establish the precise distances, luminosities, ages, and progenitor masses of such WDs. We compile a list of probable WDs that are OC members in order to facilitate WD studies that are impractical or difficult to conduct for Galactic field WDs. We use recent catalogs of WDs and OCs that are based on the second data release of the \textit{Gaia} satellite mission (GDR2) to identify WDs that are…
The third data release of Gaia has provided low resolution spectra for ~100,000 white dwarfs (WDs) that, together with the excellent photometry and astrometry, represent an unrivalled benchmark for the study of this population. In this work, we first built a highly-complete volume-limited sample consisting in 12,718 WDs within 100 pc from the Sun. The use of VOSA tool allowed us to perform an automated fitting of their spectral energy distributions to different atmospheric models. In particular, the use of spectrally derived J-PAS photometry from Gaia spectra led to the classification of DA an…
We discuss the Gaia Data Release 1 (September 2016) and preliminary work on maximising the benefit for cool white dwarf (WD) science in advance of the full parallax catalogue which will appear around one year later in DR2. The Tycho catalogue is used in conjunction with the all-sky ground based astrometric/photometric SuperCOSMOS Sky Survey in order to identify candidate faint common proper motion objects to the Tycho stars. Gaia DR1 is supplemented by the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution catalogue containing some 2 million parallaxes with Hipparcos-like precision for Tycho stars. While hotter,…
We present an overview of the sample of northern hemisphere white dwarfs within 40 pc of the Sun detected from $Gaia$ Data Release 2 (DR2). We find that 521 sources are spectroscopically confirmed degenerate stars, 111 of which were first identified as white dwarf candidates from $Gaia$ DR2 and followed-up recently with the William Herschel Telescope and Gran Telescopio Canarias. Three additional white dwarf candidates remain spectroscopically unobserved and six unresolved binaries are known to include a white dwarf but were not in our initial selection of white dwarfs in the $Gaia$ DR2 Hertzs…
We report on a comparison of spectroscopic analyses for hydrogen (DA) and helium atmosphere (DB) white dwarfs with Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) parallaxes and photometry. We assume a reddening law and a mass-radius relation to connect the effective temperatures (Teff) and surface gravities (log g) to masses and radii. This allows the comparison of two largely independent sets of fundamental parameters for 7039 DA and 521 DB stars with high-quality observations. This subset of the Gaia white dwarf sample is large enough to detect systematic trends in the derived parameters. We find that spectrosco…

Gaia provided the largest-ever catalogue of white dwarf stars. We use this catalogue, along with the third public data release of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), to identify new eclipsing white dwarf binaries. Our method exploits light curve statistics and the Box Least Squares algorithm to detect periodic light curve variability. The search revealed 18 new binaries, of which 17 are eclipsing. We use the position in the Gaia H-R diagram to classify these binaries and find that the majority of these white dwarfs have main sequence companions. We identify one system as a candidate eclipsing…

By comparing two age indicators of high-mass white dwarfs derived from Gaia data, two discoveries have been made recently: one is the existence of a cooling anomaly that produces the Q branch structure on the Hertzsprung--Russell diagram, the other is the existence of double-white-dwarf merger products. The former poses a challenge for white dwarf cooling models, and the latter has implications on binary evolution and type-Ia supernovae.
We present a catalog of 531 white dwarf candidates that have large apparent transverse motions relative to the Sun ($v_{T} > 200$ km s$^{-1}$), thus making them likely members of the local Galactic halo population. The candidates were selected from the Gaia Data Release 2, and are located in a great circle with $20^\circ$ width running across both Galactic poles and Galactic center and anti-center, a zone that spans 17.3% of the sky. The selection used a combination of kinematic and photometric properties, derived primarily from Gaia proper motions, $G$ magnitudes, and $G_{\rm BP}\,-\,G_{\rm R…
We present a homogeneous analysis of 1023 DBZ/DZ(A) and 319 DQ white dwarf stars taken from the Montreal White Dwarf Database. This represents a significant increase over the previous comprehensive studies on these types of objects. We use new trigonometric parallax measurements from the Gaia second data release, together with photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Pan-STARRS, Gaia, or BVRI from the literature, which allow the determination of the mass for the majority of the objects in our sample. We use the photometric and spectroscopic techniques with the most recent model atmosphere…

Astrometric noise in excess of parallax and proper motion could be a signature of orbital wobble of individual components in binary star systems. The combination of X-ray selection with astrometric noise can then be a powerful tool for identifying accreting binaries. Here, we mine the Gaia DR2 catalogue for Galactic sources with significant values of astrometric noise over the parameter space expected for known and candidate X-ray binaries (XRBs). Cross-matching our sample with the Chandra Source Catalogue CSC2.0 returns a primary sample of ~1,500 X-ray sources with significant excess noise, c…
We present a catalogue of white dwarf candidates selected from Gaia early data release three (EDR3). We applied several selection criteria in absolute magnitude, colour, and Gaia quality flags to remove objects with unreliable measurements while preserving most stars compatible with the white dwarf locus in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We then used a sample of over 30 000 spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs and contaminants from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to map the distribution of these objects in the Gaia absolute magnitude-colour space. Finally, we adopt the same method pr…
We present a catalogue of white dwarf candidates selected from the second data release of $Gaia$ (DR2). We used a sample of spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to map the entire space spanned by these objects in the $Gaia$ Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We then defined a set of cuts in absolute magnitude, colour, and a number of $Gaia$ quality flags to remove the majority of contaminating objects. Finally, we adopt a method analogous to the one presented in our earlier SDSS photometric catalogues to calculate a probability of being a white dwarf ($P_…
Type Ia and other peculiar supernovae (SNe) are thought to originate from the thermonuclear explosions of white dwarfs (WDs). Some of the proposed channels involve the ejection of a partly exploded WD (e.g. Iax SN remnant) or the companion of an exploding WD at extremely high velocities ($>400$ km\,s$^{-1}$). Characterisation of such hyper-runaway/hypervelocity (HVS) WDs might therefore shed light on the physics and origins of SNe. Here we analyse the \textit{Gaia} DR3 data to search for HVS WDs candidates, and peculiar sub-main-sequence (sub-MS) objects. We retrieve the previously identified …
Gaia will identify several 1e5 white dwarfs, most of which will be in the solar neighborhood at distances of a few hundred parsecs. Ground-based optical follow-up spectroscopy of this sample of stellar remnants is essential to unlock the enormous scientific potential it holds for our understanding of stellar evolution, and the Galactic formation history of both stars and planets.
We use data from Gaia DR2 to constrain the initial-final mass relation (IFMR) for field stars with initial masses $0.9 \lesssim m_{\rm in}/M_{\odot} \lesssim 8$. Precise parallaxes have revealed unprecedented substructure in the white dwarf (WD) cooling sequence on the color-magnitude diagram (CMD). Some of this substructure stems from the diversity of WD atmospheric compositions, but the CMD remains bimodal even when only spectroscopically-confirmed DA WDs are considered. We develop a generative model to predict the CMD for DA WDs as a function of the initial mass function (IMF), stellar age …
We search through an eight-million cubic-parsec volume surrounding the Pleiades star cluster and the Sun to identify both the current and past members of the Pleiades cluster within the Gaia EDR3 dataset. We find nearly 1,300 current cluster members and 289 former cluster candidates. Many of these candidates lie well in front or behind the cluster from our point of view, so formerly they were considered cluster members, but their parallaxes put them more than 10 pc from the centre of the cluster today. Over the past 100 Myr we estimate that the cluster has lost twenty percent of its mass inclu…
