In this paper we provide the analysis of the limiting conditional distribution (Yaglom limit) for stochastic fluid models (SFMs), a key class of models in the theory of matrix-analytic methods. So far, transient and stationary analyses of the SFMs have been only considered in the literature. The limiting conditional distribution gives useful insights into what happens when the process has been evolving for a long time, given its busy period has not ended yet. We derive expressions for the Yaglom limit in terms of the singularity $s^*$ such that the key matrix of the SFM, ${\bfΨ}(s)$, is finite (exists) for all $s\geq s^*$ and infinite for $s<s^*$. We show the uniqueness of the Yaglom limit and illustrate the application of the theory with simple examples.
Let $S$ be a countable set provided with a partial order and a minimal element. Consider a Markov chain on $S\cup\{0\}$ absorbed at $0$ with a quasi-stationary distribution. We use Holley inequality to obtain sufficient conditions under which the following hold. The trajectory of the chain starting from the minimal state is stochastically dominated by the trajectory of the chain starting from any probability on $S$, when both are conditioned to nonabsorption until a certain time. Moreover, the Yaglom limit corresponding to this deterministic initial condition is the unique minimal quasi-statio…
We study the existence and the exponential ergodicity of a general interacting particle system, whose components are driven by independent diffusion processes with values in an open subset of $\mathds{R}^d$, $d\geq 1$. The interaction occurs when a particle hits the boundary: it jumps to a position chosen with respect to a probability measure depending on the position of the whole system. Then we study the behavior of such a system when the number of particles goes to infinity. This leads us to an approximation method for the Yaglom limit of multi-dimensional diffusion processes with unbounded…
Stochastic fluid-fluid models (SFFMs) offer powerful modeling ability for a wide range of real-life systems of significance. The existing theoretical framework for this class of models is in terms of operator-analytic methods. For the first time, we establish matrix-analytic methods for the efficient analysis of SFFMs. We illustrate the theory with numerical examples.
In this paper, we establish the exponential mixing property of stochastic models for the incompressible second grade fluid. The general criterion established by Cyril Odasso plays an important role.
In this paper, we consider a stochastic model of incompressible second grade fluids on a bounded domain of R^2 driven by linear multiplicative Brownian noise with anticipating initial conditions. The existence and uniqueness of the solutions are established.
Introduced by Bean and O'Reilly (2014), a stochastic fluid-fluid process is a Markov processes $\{X_t, Y_t, φ_t\}_{t \geq 0}$, where the first fluid $X_t$ is driven by the Markov chain $φ_t$, and the second fluid $Y_t$ is driven by $φ_t$ as well as by $X_t$. That paper derived a closed-form expression for the joint stationary distribution, given in terms of operators acting on measures, which does not lend itself easily to numerical computations. Here, we construct a discontinuous Galerkin method for approximating this stationary distribution, and illustrate the methodology using an on-off ban…
In this paper, we established a large deviation principle for stochastic models of incompressible second grade fluids. The weak convergence method introduced by \cite{Budhiraja-Dupuis} plays an important role.
In this paper, we establish a large deviation principle for stochastic models of two-dimensional second grade fluids driven by Lévy noise. The weak convergence method introduced by Budhiraja, Dupuis and Maroulas in [5] plays a key role.
In this paper, we prove a central limit theorem and estabilish a moderate deviation principle for stochastic models of incompressible second fluids. The weak convergence method inreoduced by [4] plays an important role.
We consider a stochastic model of incompressible non-Newtonian fluids of second grade on a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^2$ driven by Lévy noise. Applying the variational approach, global existence and uniqueness of strong probabilistic solution is established.
We extend the Itô-Wentzell formula for the evolution of a time-dependent stochastic field along a semimartingale to $k$-form-valued stochastic processes. The result is the Kunita-Itô-Wentzell (KIW) formula for $k$-forms. We also establish a correspondence between the KIW formula for $k$-forms derived here and a certain class of stochastic fluid dynamics models which preserve the geometric structure of deterministic ideal fluid dynamics. This geometric structure includes Eulerian and Lagrangian variational principles, Lie--Poisson Hamiltonian formulations and natural analogues of the Kelvin cir…
We determine with positive probability the Hausdorff dimension of the level sets of a class of Navier-Stokes α-models at finite viscosity, forced by mildly rough Gaussian white noise.
In this paper, we establish a moderate deviation principle for stochastic models of two-dimensional second grade fluids driven by Lévy noise. We will adopt the weak convergence approach. Because of the appearance of jumps, this result is significantly different from that in Gaussian case.
Fast advection asymptotics for a stochastic reaction-diffusion-advection equation are studied in this paper. To describe the asymptotics, one should consider a suitable class of SPDEs defined on a graph, corresponding to the stream function of the underlying incompressible flow.
In this paper, we consider a stochastic model of incompressible non-Newtonian fluids of second grade on a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^2$ with multiplicative noise. We first show that the solutions to the stochastic equations of second grade fluids generate a continuous random dynamical system. Second, we investigate the Fréchet differentiability of the random dynamical system. Finally, we establish the asymptotic compactness of the random dynamical system, and the existence of random attractors for the random dynamical system, we also obtain the upper semi-continuity of the perturbed random …
We consider a stochastic fluid network where the external input processes are compound Poisson with heavy-tailed Weibullian jumps. Our results comprise of large deviations estimates for the buffer content process in the vector-valued Skorokhod space which is endowed with the product $J_1$ topology. To illustrate our framework, we provide explicit results for a tandem queue. At the heart of our proof is a recent sample-path large deviations result, and a novel continuity result for the Skorokhod reflection map in the product $J_1$ topology.
We consider a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) which describes the velocity field of a viscous, incompressible non-Newtonian fluid subject to a random force. Here the extra stress tensor of the fluid is given by a polynomial of degree $p-1$ of the rate of strain tensor, while the colored noise is considered as a random force. We investigate the existence and the uniqueness of weak solutions to this SPDE.
A non linear Ito equation in a Hilbert space is studied by means of Girsanov theorem. We consider a non linearity of polynomial growth in suitable norms, including that of quadratic type which appears in the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation and in the Navier-Stokes equation. We prove that Girsanov theorem holds for the 1-dimensional stochastic Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation and for a modification of the 2- and 3-dimensional stochastic Navier-Stokes equation. In this way, we prove existence and uniqueness of solutions for these stochastic equations. Moreover, the asymptotic behaviour for large time…
We consider a linear stochastic fluid network under Markov modulation, with a focus on the probability that the joint storage level attains a value in a rare set at a given point in time. The main objective is to develop efficient importance sampling algorithms with provable performance guarantees. For linear stochastic fluid networks without modulation, we prove that the number of runs needed (so as to obtain an estimate with a given precision) increases polynomially (whereas the probability under consideration decays essentially exponentially); for networks operating in the slow modulation r…
A stochastic version of a modified Navier-Stokes equation (introduced by Prouse) is considered in a 3-dimensional torus. We prove existence and uniqueness of martingale solutions. A different model with the non linearity given by a power 5 of the velocity is analyzed; for the structure function of this model, some insights towards an expression similar to that obtained by the Kolmogorov 1941 theory of turbulence are presented.
Routing mechanisms for stochastic networks are often designed to produce state space collapse (SSC) in a heavy-traffic limit, i.e., to confine the limiting process to a lower-dimensional subset of its full state space. In a fluid limit, a control producing asymptotic SSC corresponds to an ideal sliding mode control that forces the fluid trajectories to a lower-dimensional sliding manifold. Within deterministic dynamical systems theory, it is well known that sliding-mode controls can cause the system to chatter back and forth along the sliding manifold due to delays in activation of the control…
This paper extends previous work by the authors. We consider the local time process of a strong Markov process, add negative drift, and reflect it à la Skorokhod. The resulting process is used to model a fluid queue. We derive an expression for the joint law of the duration of an excursion, the maximum value of the process on it, and the time distance between successive excursions. We work with a properly constructed stationary version of the process. Examples are also given in the paper.
The fluid model has proven to be one of the most effective tools for the analysis of stochastic queueing networks, specifically for the analysis of stability. It is known that stability of a fluid model implies positive (Harris) recurrence (stability) of a corresponding stochastic queueing network, and weak stability implies rate stability of a corresponding stochastic network. These results have been established both for cases of specific scheduling policies and for the class of all work conserving policies. However, only partial converse results have been established and in certain cases con…
We construct a stochastic fluid process with an underlying piecewise deterministic Markov process (PDMP) akin to the one used in the construction of the rational arrival process (RAP), which we call the RAP-modulated fluid process. As opposed to the classic stochastic fluid process driven by a Markov jump process, the underlying PDMP of a RAP-modulated fluid process has a continuous state space and is driven by matrix parameters which may not be related to an intensity matrix. Through novel techniques we show how well-known formulae associated to the classic stochastic fluid process, such as f…
We study the Lagrangian flow associated to velocity fields arising from various models of fluid mechanics subject to white-in-time, $H^s$-in-space stochastic forcing in a periodic box. We prove that in many circumstances, these flows are chaotic, that is, the top Lyapunov exponent is strictly positive. Our main results are for the Navier-Stokes equations on $\mathbb T^2$ and the hyper-viscous regularized Navier-Stokes equations on $\mathbb T^3$ (at arbitrary Reynolds number and hyper-viscosity parameters), subject to forcing which is non-degenerate at high frequencies. As an application, we st…
We consider a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) which describes the velocity field of a viscous, incompressible non-Newtonian fluid subject to a random force. Here, the extra stress tensor of the fluid is given by a polynomial of degree p-1 of the rate of strain tensor, while the colored noise is considered as a random force. We focus on the shear thickening case, more precisely, on the case $p\in [1+{\frac{d}{2}},{\frac{2d}{d-2}})$, where d is the dimension of the space. We prove that the Galerkin scheme approximates the velocity field in a strong sense. As a consequence, we est…
We consider the 3D hyperviscous Navier-Stokes equations in vorticity form, where the dissipative term $-Δ\vec ξ$ of the Navier-Stokes equations is substituted by $(-Δ)^{1+c} \vec ξ$. We investigate how big the correction term $c$ has to be in order to prove, by means of Girsanov transform, that the vorticity equations are equivalent (in law) to easier reference equations obtained by neglecting the stretching term. This holds as soon as $c>\frac 12$, improving previous results obtained with $c>\frac 32$ in a different setting in [5,14].
We consider a stochastic fluid queue served by a constant rate server and driven by a process which is the local time of a certain Markov process. Such a stochastic system can be used as a model in a priority service system, especially when the time scales involved are fast. The input (local time) in our model is always singular with respect to the Lebesgue measure which in many applications is ``close'' to reality. We first discuss how to rigorously construct the (necessarily) unique stationary version of the system under some natural stability conditions. We then consider the distribution of…
We study a simple rate control scheme for a multiclass queuing network for which customers are partitioned into distinct flows that are queued separately at each station. The control scheme discards customers that arrive to the network ingress whenever any one of the flow's queues throughout the network holds more than a specified threshold number of customers. We prove that if the state of a corresponding fluid model tends to a set where the flow rates are equal to target rates, then there exist sufficiently high thresholds that make the long-term average flow rates of the stochastic network …
We investigate the stochastic evolution equations describing the motion of a Non-Newtonian fluids excited by multiplicative noise of Lévy type. By making use of Galerkin approximation we can prove that the system has a global (probabilistic) strong solution. This solution is unique and we also prove that the sequence of Galerkin solution converges to this unique solution in mean square.
Assume that a stochastic processes can be approximated, when some scale parameter gets large, by a fluid limit (also called "mean field limit", or "hydrodynamic limit"). A common practice, often called the "fixed point approximation" consists in approximating the stationary behaviour of the stochastic process by the stationary points of the fluid limit. It is known that this may be incorrect in general, as the stationary behaviour of the fluid limit may not be described by its stationary points. We show however that, if the stochastic process is reversible, the fixed point approximation is ind…
In this paper we establish a mathematical framework which may be used to design Monte-Carlo simulations for a class of time irreversible dynamic systems, such as incompressible fluid flows, including turbulent flows in wall-bounded regions, and some other (non-linear) dynamic systems. Path integral representations for solutions of forward parabolic equations are obtained, and, in combining with the vorticity transport equations, probabilistic formulations for solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations are therefore derived in terms of (forward) McKean-Vlasov stochastic differential equations (SD…
This paper establishes limit theorems for a class of stochastic hybrid systems (continuous deterministic dynamic coupled with jump Markov processes) in the fluid limit (small jumps at high frequency), thus extending known results for jump Markov processes. We prove a functional law of large numbers with exponential convergence speed, derive a diffusion approximation and establish a functional central limit theorem. We apply these results to neuron models with stochastic ion channels, as the number of channels goes to infinity, estimating the convergence to the deterministic model. In terms of …
In this paper we introduce a constructive approach to study well-posedness of solutions to stochastic fluid-structure interaction with stochastic noise. We focus on a benchmark problem in stochastic fluid-structure interaction, and prove the existence of a unique weak solution in the probabilistically strong sense. The benchmark problem consists of the 2D time-dependent Stokes equations describing the flow of an incompressible, viscous fluid interacting with a linearly elastic membrane modeled by the 1D linear wave equation. The membrane is stochastically forced by the time-dependent white noi…
In this paper, we establish the well-posedness for the third grade fluid equation perturbed by a multiplicative white noise. This equation describes the motion of a non-Newtonian fluid of differential type with relevant viscoelastic properties. We are faced with a strongly nonlinear stochastic partial differential equation supplemented with a Navier slip boundary condition. Taking the initial condition in the Sobolev space H^2, we show the existence and the uniqueness of the strong (in the probability sense) solution in a two dimensional and non axisymmetric bounded domain.
In this work, we use a tempering-based adaptive particle filter to infer from a partially observed stochastic rotating shallow water (SRSW) model which has been derived using the Stochastic Advection by Lie Transport (SALT) approach. The methodology we present here validates the applicability of tempering and sample regeneration via a Metropolis-Hastings algorithm to high-dimensional models used in stochastic fluid dynamics. The methodology is first tested on the Lorenz '63 model with both full and partial observations. Then we discuss the efficiency of the particle filter the SALT-SRSW model.
The authors consider stochastic aspects of the stabilization problem for two and three-dimensional Oseen equations with help of feedback control defined on a part of the fluid boundary. Stochastic issues arise when inevitable unpredictable fluctuations in numerical realization of stabilization procedures are taken into account and they are supposed to be independent identically distributed random variables. Under this assumption the solution to the stabilization problem obtained via boundary feedback control can be described by a Markov chain or a discrete random dynamical system. It is shown …
The tandem fluid queueing model is a useful tool for performance analysis and control design for a variety of transportation systems. In this article, we study the joint impact of stochastic capacity and spillback on the long-time properties of this model. Our analysis focuses on the system of two fluid queueing links in series. The upstream link has a constant capacity (saturation rate) and an infinite buffer size. The downstream link has a stochastic capacity and a finite buffer size. Queue spillback occurs when the the downstream link is full. We derive a necessary condition and a sufficien…
We consider a stochastic perturbation of the phase field alpha-Navier-Stokes model with vesicle-fluid interaction. It consists in a system of nonlinear evolution partial differential equations modeling the fluid-structure interaction associated to the dynamics of an elastic vesicle immersed in a moving incompressible viscous fluid. This system of equations couples a phase-field equation -- for the interface between the fluid and the vesicle -- to the alpha-Navier-Stokes equation -- for the viscous fluid -- with an extra nonlinear interaction term, namely the bending energy. The stochastic pert…
We consider a statistical limit of solutions to the compressible Navier--Stokes system in the high Reynolds number regime in a domain exterior to a rigid body. We investigate to what extent this highly turbulent regime can be modeled by an external stochastic perturbation, as suggested in the related physics literature. To this end, we interpret the statistical limit as a stochastic process on the associated trajectory space. We suppose that the limit process is statistically equivalent to a solution of the stochastic compressible Euler system. Then, necessarily, (i) the stochastic forcing is …
This article is devoted to the well-posedness of the stochastic compressible Navier Stokes equations. We establish the global existence of an appropriate class of weak solutions emanating from large inital data, set within a bounded domain. The stochastic forcing is of multiplicative type, white in time and colored in space. Energy methods are used to merge techniques of P.L. Lions for the deterministic, compressible system with the theory of martingale solutions to the incompressible, stochastic system. Namely, we develop stochastic analogues of the weak compactness program of Lions, and use …
We introduce a novel concept of dissipative measure-valued martingale solution to the stochastic Euler equations describing the motion of an inviscid incompressible fluid. These solutions are characterized by a parametrized Young measure and a concentration defect measure in the total energy balance. Moreover, they are weak in the probablistic sense i.e., the underlying probablity space and the driving Wiener process are intrinsic part of the solution. In a significant departure from the existing literature, we first exhibit the relative energy inequality for the incompressible Euler equations…
We formulate a class of stochastic partial differential equations based on Kelvin's circulation theorem for ideal fluids. In these models, the velocity field is randomly transported by white-noise vector fields, as well as by its own average over realizations of this noise. We call these systems the Lagrangian averaged stochastic advection by Lie transport (LA SALT) equations. These equations are nonlinear and non-local, in both physical and probability space. Before taking this average, the equations recover the Stochastic Advection by Lie Transport (SALT) fluid equations introduced by Holm (…
