We consider a random conductance model on the $d$-dimensional lattice, $d\in[2,\infty)\cap\mathbb{N}$, where the conductances take values in $(0,\infty)$ and are however not assumed to be bounded from above and below. We assume that the law of the random conductances is stationary and ergodic with respect to translations on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and invariant with respect to reflections on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and satisfies a similar moment bound as that by Andres, Deuschel, and Slowik (2015), under which a quenched FCLT holds. We prove a first-order Liouville theorem. In the proof we construct the sublinear correctors in the discrete and adapt boundary estimates for harmonic extensions from the work in the continuum done by Bella, Fehrman, and Otto (2018) to the discrete.
We study the behavior of second-order degenerate elliptic systems in divergence form with random coefficients which are stationary and ergodic. Assuming moment bounds like Chiarini and Deuschel [Arxiv preprint 1410.4483, 2014] on the coefficient field $a$ and its inverse, we prove an intrinsic large-scale $C^{1,α}$-regularity estimate for $a$-harmonic functions and obtain a first-order Liouville theorem for subquadratic $a$-harmonic functions.
In this paper, we apply the moving plane method to some degenerate elliptic equations to get a Liouville type theorem. As an application, we derive the a priori bounds for positive solutions of some semi-linear degenerate elliptic equations.
We extend the Liouville-type theorems of Gilbarg and Weinberger and of Koch, Nadirashvili, Seregin and Sverák valid for the stationary variant of the classical Navier-Stokes equations in 2D to the degenerate power law fluid model.
In this paper, we apply the moving plane method to the following high order degenerate elliptic equation,\begin{equation*} (-A)^p u=u^α\text{ in } \mathbb R^{n+1}_+,n\geq 1, \end{equation*}where the operator $A=y\partial_y^2+a\partial_y+Δ_x,a\geq 1$. We get a Liouville theorem for subcritical case and classify the solutions for the critical case.
We prove nonexistence results of Liouville type for nonnegative viscosity solutions of some equations involving the fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic operators ${\cal P}^\pm_k$, defined respectively as the sum of the largest and the smallest $k$ eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix. For the operator ${\cal P}^+_k$ we obtain results analogous to those which hold for the Laplace operator in space dimension $k$. Whereas, owing to the stronger degeneracy of the operator ${\cal P}^-_k$, we get totally different results.
We study a class of second-order boundary-degenerate elliptic equations in two dimensions with minimal regularity assumptions. We prove a maximum principle and a Harnack inequality at the degenerate boundary, and assuming local boundedness, we prove continuity. On globally defined non-negative solutions we provide strong constraints on behavior at infinity, and prove a Liouville-type theorem for entire solutions on the closed half-plane. The class of PDE in question includes many from mathematical finance, Keldysh- and Tricomi-type PDE, and the 2nd order reduction of the fully non-linear 4th o…
We consider the random conductance model in a stationary and ergodic environment. Under suitable moment conditions on the conductances and their inverse, we prove a quenched invariance principle for the random walk among the random conductances. The moment conditions improve earlier results of Andres, Deuschel and Slowik [Ann.\ Probab.] and are the minimal requirement to ensure that the corrector is sublinear everywhere. The key ingredient is an essentially optimal deterministic local boundedness result for finite difference equations in divergence form.
A version of Liouville's theorem is proved for solutions of some degenerate elliptic equations defined in $\mathbb{R}^n\backslash K$, where $K$ is a compact set, provided the structure of this equation and the dimension $n$ are related. This result is a correction of a previous one established by Serrin, since some additional hypotheses are necessary. Theoretical and numerical examples are given. Furthermore, a comparison result and the uniqueness of solution are obtained for such equations in exterior domains.
We establish heat kernel upper bounds for a continuous-time random walk under unbounded conductances satisfying an integrability assumption, where we correct and extend recent results by the authors to a general class of speed measures. The resulting heat kernel estimates are governed by the intrinsic metric induced by the speed measure. We also provide a comparison result of this metric with the usual graph distance, which is optimal in the context of the random conductance model with ergodic conductances.
We study the random conductance model on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$, i.e. we consider a linear, finite-difference, divergence-form operator with random coefficients and the associated random walk under random conductances. We allow the conductances to be unbounded and degenerate elliptic, but they need to satisfy a strong moment condition and a quantified ergodicity assumption in form of a spectral gap estimate. As a main result we obtain in dimension $d\geq 3$ quantitative central limit theorems for the random walk in form of a Berry-Esseen estimate with speed $t^{-\frac 1 5+\varepsilon}$ for…
We consider a stationary and ergodic random field $\{ω(e) : e \in E_d\}$ that is parameterized by the edge set of the Euclidean lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d \geq 2$. The random variable $ω(e)$, taking values in $[0, \infty)$ and satisfying certain moment bounds, is thought of as the conductance of the edge $e$. Assuming that the set of edges with positive conductances give rise to a unique infinite cluster $\mathcal{C}_{\infty}(ω)$, we prove a quenched invariance principle for the continuous-time random walk among random conductances under relatively mild conditions on the structure of the infin…
This article is devoted to the study of the behavior of generalized entire solutions for a wide class of quasilinear degenerate inequalities modeled on the following prototype with p-Laplacian in the main part \begin{equation*} {\underset{m}{\overset{i=1}{\sum}}} X_i^*(|\mathbf{X}u|^{p-2} X_i u)\geq |u|^{q-2}u, \ \ x\in {\mathbb{R}}^{n},\ q>1,\ p>1, \end{equation*} where ${\mathbb{R}}^{n}$ is a Carnot-Carathéodory metric space, generated by the system of vector fields $\mathbf{X}=(X_1,X_2,..,X_m)$ and $X_i^*$ denotes the adjoint of $X_i$ with respect to Lebesgue measure. For the case where $p$…
We consider a class of equations in divergence form with a singular/degenerate weight $$ -\mathrm{div}(|y|^a A(x,y)\nabla u)=|y|^a f(x,y)+\textrm{div}(|y|^aF(x,y))\;. $$ Under suitable regularity assumptions for the matrix $A$, the forcing term $f$ and the field $F$, we prove Hölder continuity of solutions which are odd in $y\in\mathbb{R}$, and possibly of their derivatives. In addition, we show stability of the $C^{0,α}$ and $C^{1,α}$ a priori bounds for approximating problems in the form $$ -\mathrm{div}((\varepsilon^2+y^2)^{a/2} A(x,y)\nabla u)=(\varepsilon^2+y^2)^{a/2} f(x,y)+\textrm{div}(…
In this paper, we give a new proof of a celebrated theorem of Jörgens which states that every classical convex solution of \[ \det\nabla^2 u (x)=1\quad {in} \mathbb{R}^2 \] has to be a second order polynomial. Our arguments do not use complex analysis, and can be applied to establish such Liouville type theorems for solutions of a class of degenerate Monge-Ampère equations. We prove that every convex generalized (or Alexandrov) solution of \[ \det \nabla^2 u(x_1,x_2)=|x_1|^α \quad {in} \mathbb{R}^2, \] where $α>-1$, has to be \[ u(x_1,x_2)= \frac{a}{(α+2)(α+1)}|x_1|^{2+α}+\frac{a b^2}{2}x_1^2 …
We consider a boundary value problem in the half-space for a linear parabolic equation of fourth order with a degeneration on the boundary of the half-space. The equation under consideration is substantially a linearized thin film equation. We prove that, if the right hand side of the equation and the boundary condition are polynomials in the tangential variables and time, the same property has any solution of a power growth. It is shown also that the specified property does not apply to normal variable. As an application, we present a theorem of uniqueness for the problem in the class of func…
We study a general class of discrete $p$-Laplace operators in the random conductance model with long-range jumps and ergodic weights. Using a variational formulation of the problem, we show that under the assumption of bounded first moments and a suitable lower moment condition on the weights, the homogenized limit operator is a fractional $p$-Laplace operator. Under strengthened lower moment conditions, we can apply our insights also to the spectral homogenization of the discrete Laplace operator to the continuous fractional Laplace operator.
We consider a class of equations in divergence form with a singular/degenerate weight $$-\mathrm{div}(|y|^a A(x,y)\nabla u)=|y|^a f(x,y)\; \quad\textrm{or} \ \textrm{div}(|y|^aF(x,y))\;.$$ Under suitable regularity assumptions for the matrix $A$ and $f$ (resp. $F$) we prove Hölder continuity of solutions which are even in $y\in\mathbb{R}$, and possibly of their derivatives up to order two or more (Schauder estimates). In addition, we show stability of the $C^{0,α}$ and $C^{1,α}$ a priori bounds for approximating problems in the form $$-\mathrm{div}((\varepsilon^2+y^2)^{a/2} A(x,y)\nabla u)=(\v…
In this paper, we consider the indefinite fractional elliptic problem. A corresponding Liouville-type theorem for the indefinite fractional elliptic equations is established. Furthermore, we obtain a priori bound for solutions in a bounded domain by blowing-up and re-scaling. We also classify the solutions of some degenerate elliptic equation originated from fractional Laplacian.
We establish a quenched local central limit theorem for the dynamic random conductance model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ only assuming ergodicity with respect to space-time shifts and a moment condition. As a key analytic ingredient we show Hölder continuity estimates for solutions to the heat equation for discrete finite difference operators in divergence form with time-dependent degenerate weights. The proof is based on De Giorgi's iteration technique. In addition, we also derive a quenched local central limit theorem for the static random conductance model on a class of random graphs with degenerate …
We prove a Liouville type classification theorem in half-spaces for infinite boundary value problems related to fully nonlinear, uniformly elliptic operators. We then apply the result in order to obtain gradient boundary blow up rates for ergodic functions in bounded domains related to degenerate/singular operators, and, as a further consequence, we deduce the uniqueness of the ergodic functions.
We study local regularity properties of linear, non-uniformly parabolic finite-difference operators in divergence form related to the random conductance model on $\mathbb Z^d$. In particular, we provide an oscillation decay assuming only certain summability properties of the conductances and their inverse, thus improving recent results in that direction. As an application, we provide a local limit theorem for the random walk in a random degenerate and unbounded environment.
Let $A=(a_{ij})_{n\times n}$ be a nonnegative, symmetric, irreducible and invertible matrix. We prove the existence and uniqueness of radial solutions to the following Liouville system with singularity: $$\{{array}{ll} Δu_i+\sum_{j=1}^n a_{ij}|x|^{β_j}e^{u_j(x)}=0,\quad \mathbb R^2, \quad i=1,...,n \int_{\mathbb R^2}|x|^{β_i}e^{u_i(x)}dx<\infty, \quad i=1,...,n {array}. $$ where $β_1,...,β_n$ are constants greater than -2. If all $β_i$s are negative we prove that all solutions are radial and the linearized system is non-degenerate.
The paper treats second order fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic equations having a family of subunit vector fields satisfying a full-rank bracket condition. It studies Liouville properties for viscosity sub- and supersolutions in the whole space, namely, that under a suitable bound at infinity from above and, respectively, from below, they must be constants. In a previous paper we proved an abstract result and discussed operators on the Heisenberg group. Here we consider various families of vector fields: the generators of a Carnot group, with more precise results for those of step 2, in par…
This note contains a representation formula for positive solutions of linear degenerate second-order equations of the form $$ \partial_t u (x,t) = \sum_{j=1}^m X_j^2 u(x,t) + X_0 u(x,t) \qquad (x,t) \in \mathbb{R}^N \times\, ]- \infty ,T[,$$ proved by a functional analytic approach based on Choquet theory. As a consequence, we obtain Liouville-type theorems and uniqueness results for the positive Cauchy problem.
We prove a weak comparison principle in narrow unbounded domains for solutions to $-Δ_p u=f(u)$ in the case $2<p< 3$ and $f(\cdot)$ is a power-type nonlinearity, or in the case $p>2$ and $f(\cdot)$ is super-linear. We exploit it to prove the monotonicity of positive solutions to $-Δ_p u=f(u)$ in half spaces (with zero Dirichlet assumption) and therefore to prove some Liouville-type theorems.
We examine the degenerate elliptic system $$-Δ_{s} u = v^p, \quad -Δ_{s} v= u^θ, \quad u,v>0 \quad\mbox{in }\; \mathbb{R}^N=\mathbb{R}^{N_1}\times \mathbb{R}^{N_2}, \quad\mbox{where }\;\;\;\; s \geq 0\;\; \mbox{and} \;\;p,θ>0.$$ We prove that the system has no smooth stable solution provided $p,θ>0$ and $N_s< 2 + α+ β,$ where $$α= \frac{2(p+1)}{pθ- 1} \quad\mbox{and} \quad β= \frac{2(θ+1)}{pθ- 1}.$$ This result is an extension of some result in \cite{ MY}. In particular, we establish a new the integral estimate for $u$ and $v$ \;(see Proposition 1.1), which is crucial to deal with the case $0 …
This paper studies Liouville properties for viscosity sub- and supersolutions of fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic PDEs, under the main assumption that the operator has a family of generalized subunit vector fields that satisfy the Hörmander condition. A general set of sufficient conditions is given such that all subsolutions bounded above are constant; it includes the existence of a supersolution out of a big ball, that explodes at infinity. Therefore for a large class of operators the problem is reduced to finding such a Lyapunov-like function. This is done here for the vector fields that …
We introduce a unified framework for the construction of convolutions and product formulas associated with a general class of regular and singular Sturm-Liouville boundary value problems. Our approach is based on the application of the Sturm-Liouville spectral theory to the study of the associated hyperbolic equation. As a by-product, an existence and uniqueness theorem for degenerate hyperbolic Cauchy problems with initial data at a parabolic line is established. The mapping properties of convolution operators generated by Sturm-Liouville operators are studied. Analogues of various notions an…
We investigate the characterization of generators $\mathcal{L}$ of Lévy processes satisfying the Liouville theorem: Bounded functions $u$ solving $\mathcal{L}[u]=0$ are constant. These operators are degenerate elliptic of the form $\mathcal{L}=\mathcal{L}^{σ,b}+\mathcal{L}^μ$ for some local part $\mathcal{L}^{σ,b}[u]=\text{tr}(σσ^{\texttt{T}} D^2u)+b \cdot Du$ and nonlocal part $$ \mathcal{L}^μ[u](x)=\int \big(u(x+z)-u(x)-z \cdot Du(x) \mathbf{1}_{|z| \leq 1}\big) \, \text{d} μ(z), $$ where $μ\geq 0$ is a so-called Lévy measure possibly unbounded for small $z$. In this paper, we focus on the p…
