We study nonlinear optical responses in superconducting systems with inversion ($\mathcal{I}$) symmetry-breaking order parameters. We first show that any superconducting system with $\mathcal{I}$ and time-reversal ($\mathcal{T}$) symmetries requires an $\mathcal{I}$-breaking order parameter to support optical transitions between particle-hole pair bands. We then use a 1D toy model of an $\mathcal{I}$-breaking superconductor to numerically calculate linear and nonlinear conductivities, including shift current and second harmonic generations (SHG) responses. We find that the magnitude of the signal is significantly larger in shift current/SHG response compare to the linear response due to the matrix element effect. We also present various scaling behaviors of the SHG signal, which may be relevant to the recent experimental observation of SHG in cuprates [1]. Finally, we confirm the generality of our observations regarding nonlinear responses of $\mathcal{I}$-breaking superconductors, by analyzing other models including a 1D three-band model and 2D square lattice model.
We study Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state of superconductors with and without inversion symmetry based on the Hubbard model on the square lattice near half-filling, using the random phase approximation. We show that center of mass momentum $Q$ tends to be parallel to $x$- or y-axis in the presence of inversion symmetry, while $Q$ vector is likely to be perpendicular to the magnetic field in the absence of inversion symmetry. We also clarify that $d+f$-wave pairing is favored and the hetero spin triplet $f$-wave state is present in the FFLO state unlike state in the superconductors…
In materials without spatial inversion symmetry the spin degeneracy of the conduction electrons can be lifted by an antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling. We discuss the influence of this spin-orbit coupling on the spin susceptibility of such superconductors, with a particular emphasis on the recently discovered heavy Fermion superconductor CePt3Si. We find that, for this compound (with tetragonal crystal symmetry,) irrespective of the pairing symmetry, the stable superconducting phases would give a very weak change of the spin susceptibility for fields along the c-axis and an intermediate reducti…
Vortex phase in a singlet superconductor in the absence of impurities is shown to be absolutely unstable with respect to the appearance of a triplet component which breaks both inversion and time-reversal symmetries of Cooper pairs. Symmetry breaking paramagnetic effects are demonstrated to be of the order of unity if the orbital upper critical field, Hc2(0), is of the order of Clogston paramagnetic limiting field, Hp. We suggest a generic phase diagram of such type-IV superconductor, which is singlet one at H=0 and characterized by mixed singlet-triplet order parameter with broken time-revers…
This article is a pedagogical review of theoretical studies of noncentrosymmetric superconductors with particular emphasis on the role played by electron correlation, which is important for heavy fermion systems. We survey unique properties of parity-violated superconductivity such as the admixture of spin singlet and triplet states, unusual paramagnetism, large Pauli limiting fields, magnetoelectric effects, the helical vortex phase, and the anomalous Hall effect. It is pointed out that these remarkable features are strengthened by a strong electron correlation effect, and thus are prominent …
Experiments on several novel superconducting compounds have observed oscillations of the specific heat when an applied magnetic field is rotated with respect to the crystal axes. The results are commonly interpreted as arising from the nodes of an unconventional order parameter, but the identifications of nodal directions are sometimes controversial. Here we show with a semiclassical model calculation that when the magnetic field points in the direction of the nodes, either minima or maxima can occur in the specific heat depending on the the temperature $T$ and the magnetic field $H$. An inver…
We investigate effects of strong electron correlation on magnetoelectric transport phenomena in noncentrosymmetric superconductors with particular emphasis on its application to the recently discovered heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_3$Si. Taking into account electron correlation effects in a formally exact way, we obtain the expression of the magnetoelectric coefficient for the Zeeman-field-induced paramagnetic supercurrent, of which the existence was predicted more than a decade ago. It is found that in contrast to the usual Meissner current, which is much reduced by the mass renormalizat…
Most superconducting materials have an inversion center in their crystal lattices. One of few exceptions is the recently discovered heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si [E. Bauer et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 027003 (2004)]. In this paper, we analyze the implications of the lack of inversion symmetry for the superconducting pairing. We show that the order parameter is an odd function of momentum, and that there always are lines of zeros in the excitation energy gap for one-component order parameters, which seems to agree with the experimental data. The superconducting phase can be non-uniform, e…
We study the response of a superconductor with a strong spin-orbit coupling on an external magnetic field. The Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional is derived microscopically for a general crystal structure, both with and without an inversion center, and for an arbitrary symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. As a by-product, we obtain the general expressions for the intrinsic magnetic moment of the Cooper pairs. It is shown that the Ginzburg-Landau gradient energy in a superconductor lacking inversion symmetry has unusual structure. The general formalism is illustrated using as an…
We investigate the macroscopic effects of charge density waves (CDW) and superconductivity in layered superconducting systems with broken lattice inversion symmetry (allowing for piezoelectricity) such as two dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD). We work with the low temperature time dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory and study the coupling of lattice distortions and low energy CDW collective modes to the superconducting order parameter in the presence of electromagnetic fields. We show that superconductivity and piezoelectricity can coexist in these singular metals. Furthermo…
We calculate the upper critical field, Hc2(T), due to the orbital pair breaking in disordered superconductors without inversion symmetry. Differences from the usual centrosymmetric case are highlighted. The linearized gap equations in magnetic field, with the singlet and triplet pairing channels mixed by impurity scattering, are solved exactly for a cubic crystal.
Inversion and time reversal are essential symmetries for the structure of Cooper pairs in superconductors. The loss of one or both leads to modifications to this structure and can change the properties of the superconducting phases in profound ways. Lacking inversion, superconductivity in noncentrosymmetric materials has become an important topic, in particular, in the context of topological superconductivity as well as unusual magnetic and magneto-electric properties. Recently, crystal structures with local, but not global inversion-symmetry breaking have attracted attention, as superconducti…
We present the microscopic Fermi liquid theory for magnetic properties and transport phenomena in interacting electron systems without inversion symmetry both in the normal state and in the superconducting state. Our argument is mainly focused on the application to noncentrosymmetric heavy fermion superconductors. The transport coefficients for the anomalous Hall effect, the thermal anomalous Hall effect, the spin Hall effect, and magnetoelectric effects, of which the existence is a remarkable feature of parity violation, are obtained by taking into account electron correlation effects in a fo…
We study how an inversion-breaking quantum critical point affects the ground state of a one-dimensional electronic liquid with repulsive interaction and spin-orbit coupling. We find that regardless of the interaction strength, the critical fluctuations always lead to a gap in the electronic spin-sector. The origin of the gap is a two-particle backscattering process, which becomes relevant due to renormalization of the Luttinger parameter near the critical point. The resulting spin-gapped state is a one-dimensional version of spin triplet superconductivity. Interestingly, in the case of a ferro…
We consider superconductivity in the presence of impurities in a two-band model suited for the description of iron-based superconductors. We analyze the effect of interband scattering processes on superconductivity, allowing for orbital, i.e., nonspin-magnetic but time-reversal symmetry-breaking impurities. Pair breaking in such systems is described by a nontrivial phase in an interband-scattering matrix element. We find that the transition temperature of conventional superconductors can be suppressed due to interband scattering, whereas unconventional superconductors may be unaffected. We als…
Unlike other pnictides, SrPtAs has a hexagonal structure, containing layers with As-Pt atoms that form a honeycomb lattice. These layers lack inversion symmetry which allows for a spin-orbit coupling that we show has a dramatic effect on superconductivity in this material. In particular, for conventional s-wave superconductivity in SrPtAs, both the spin susceptibility and the paramagnetic limiting field are enhanced significantly with respect to that usually expected for s-wave superconductors. SrPtAs provides a prime example of a superconductor with locally broken inversion symmetry.
We study the effects of the leading irrelevant perturbations on chiral symmetry breaking in the effective $QED_3$ theory of d-wave superconductor-insulator transition in underdoped cuprates. For weak symmetry breaking, the effect of a perturbation on energies of various insulating states can be classified according to its engineering dimension in the maximally symmetric theory. Considering the velocity anisotropy, repulsive interactions, and higher order derivatives we show that the insulating state with the lowest energy is the spin density wave.
A d-wave superconductor, its phase coherence progressively destroyed by unbinding of vortex-antivortex pairs, suffers an instability related to chiral symmetry breaking in two-flavor QED$_3$. The chiral manifold exhibits large degeneracy spanned by physical states acting as inherent ``competitors'' of d-wave superconductivity. Two of these states are associated with antiferromagnetic insulator and ``stripe'' phases, known to be stable in the pseudogap regime of cuprates near half-filling. The theory also predicts additional, yet unobserved state: a d+ip phase-incoherent superconductor.
Theoretical studies of a planar tunnel junction between two superconductors with antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling are presented. The half-space Green's function for such a superconductor is determined. This is then used to derive expressions for the dissipative current and the Josephson current of the junction. Numerical results are presented in the case of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling, relevant to the much studied compound CePt$_3$Si. Current-voltage diagrams, differential conductance and the critical Josephson current are presented for different crystallographic orientations and different…
We re-examine the tunneling data on A15 superconductors by performing a generalized McMillan-Rowell tunneling inversion that incorporates a nonconstant electronic density of states obtained from band-structure calculations. For Nb3Sn, we find that the fit to the experimental data can be slightly improved by taking into account the sharp structure in the density of states, but it is likely that such an analysis alone is not enough to completely explain the superconducting tunneling characteristics of this material. Nevertheless, the extracted Eliashberg function displays a number of features ex…
The low temperature variation of the London penetration depth for a number of iron-pnictide and iron-chalcogenide superconductors is nearly quadratic, $Δλ(T) = βT^n$ with $n\approx 2$. The coefficient in this dependence shows a robust scaling, $β\propto 1/T_c^3$ across different families of these materials. We associate the scaling with a strong pair-breaking. The same mechanism have recently been suggested to explain the scalings of the specific heat jump, $ΔC \propto T_c^3$, and of the slopes of the upper critical field, $dH_{c2}/dT\propto T_c$ in these materials. This suggests that thermody…
Surface states of d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductors are studied using the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory. For a [110] surface it has been known that the time-reversal symmetry (T) breaking surface state, (d+-is)-wave state, can occur if the bare transition temperature of the s-wave order parameter (OP) is positive. We show that even if this bare T_c is negative, it is possible to break T because the coupling to the spontaneously generated magnetic field may induce the s-wave OP. The T-breaking state is favored when the GL parameter (kappa) is small.
Noncentrosymmetric superconductors (NCSs) with broken inversion symmetry can have spin-dependent order parameters (OPs) with mixed parity which can also have nodes in the pair potential as well as the energy spectra. These nodes are distinct features that are not present in conventional superconductors. They appear as points or lines in the momentum space where the latter can have angular or radial geometries dictated by the dimensionality, the lattice structure and the pairing interaction. In this work we study the nodes in time reversal symmetry (TRS) preserving NCSs at the OP, the pair pote…
We study the behavior of spinless fermions in superconducting state, in which the phases of the superconducting order parameter depend on the direction of the link. We find that the energy of the superconductor depends on the phase differences of the superconducting order parameter. The solutions for the phases corresponding to the energy minimuma, lead to a topological superconducting state with the nontrivial Chern numbers. We focus our quantitative analysis on the properties of topological states of superconductors with different crystalline symmetry and show that the phase transition in th…
We study the magnetic properties of a superconductor in a crystal without $z \to -z$ symmetry, in particular how the lack of this symmetry exhibits itself. We show that, though the penetration depth itself shows no such effect, for suitable orientation of magnetic field, there is a magnetic field discontinuity at the interface which shows this absence of symmetry. The magnetic field profile of a vortex in the $x-y$ plane is shown to be identical to that of an ordinary anisotropic superconductor except for a shift in the $-z$ direction by ${\tilde κ} λ_x$ (see errata). For a vortex along $z$, t…
This chapter emphasizes new magnetic properties that arise when inversion symmetry is broken in a superconductor. There are two aspects that will be covered in detail. The first topic encompasses physics related to superconducting magnetoelectric effects that arise from broken inversion symmetry. Broken inversion symmetry allow for Lifshitz invariants in the free energy which can be viewed as a coupling between the magnetic induction and the supercurrent. There are similarities between these invariants and the better known Dzyaloshinskii-Moyira interaction in magnetic systems. These Lifshitz i…
We consider a superconductor in which the density of states at the Fermi level or the pairing interaction is driven periodically with a frequency larger than the superconducting gap in the collisionless regime. We show by numerical and analytical computations that a subset of quasiparticle excitations enter into resonance and perform synchronous Rabi oscillations leading to cyclic population inversion with a frequency that depends on the amplitude of the drive. As a consequence a new "Rabi-Higgs" mode emerges. Turning off the drive at different times and modulating the strength allows access t…
Superconducting states with different internal topology are discussed for the layered high-T_c materials. If the time inversion symmetry is broken, the superconductivity is determined not only by the symmetry of the superconducting state, but also by the topology of the ground state. The latter is determined the integer-valued momentum-space topological invariant N. The current carrying boundary between domains with different N (N_2 and N_1) is considered. The current is produced by fermion zero modes, which number per one layer is 2(N_2-N_1).
We analyze an unconventional inter-subband paired phase in a 2D doped superconductor considering both systems with the inversion symmetry and with the inversion symmetry broken. We find that for a centro-symmetric system the inter-subband pairing can appear in the high concentration regime when the repulsive Coulomb interaction leads to the nearly degenerate symmetric and antisymmetric state. We discuss in detail the mutual competition between the intra- and inter-subband paired phase. For systems with broken inversion symmetry, we find that the critical temperature has a characteristic domeli…
In this paper, we investigate analytically the experimental observations of structural collapse and Tc enhancement in the rare earth-doped 122-type iron-based pnictide superconductors [S. R. Saha et.al. Phys. Rev. B 85, 024525 (2012), arXiv:1105.4798 (2011); B. Lv et al. PNAS 108, 15705 (2011).]. Based on the real-space effective c-axis lattice constant theory of superconductivity [X. Q. Huang, arXiv:1001.5067], it is shown that the abrupt c-axis reduction of the superconductors is due to the structural phase transition (an ultra-short-range symmetry breaking) of the charge stripe lattice. The…
We investigate the interplay of onsite Coulomb repulsion and various mechanisms breaking the fourfold lattice symmetry in a three-band model for the iron planes of iron-based superconductors. Using cluster-perturbation theory allows us to locally break the symmetry between the x- and y-directions without imposing long-range magnetic order. Previously investigated anisotropic magnetic couplings are compared to an orbital-ordering field and anisotropic hoppings. We find that all three mechanisms for a broken rotational symmetry lead to similar signatures once onsite interactions are strong enoug…
Due to the absence of a center of inversion in some superconducting compounds, a p-wave admixture to the dominant d-wave order parameter must exist. If time-reversal is also violated, an allowed invariant is the product of the d-wave, p-wave and an appropriately directed current. We show that this leads to an anomalous Josephson current for tunneling along the direction parallel to the axis of the p-wave component, where the current is the Meissner current and the Josephson loop current along the surface of the tunnel barrier. These ideas are applied to the superconducting state of the cuprate…
Superconductivity and magnetism are antagonistic states of matter. The presence of spontaneous magnetic fields inside the superconducting state is, therefore, an intriguing phenomenon prompting extensive experimental and theoretical research. In this review, we discuss recent experimental discoveries of unconventional superconductors which spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry and theoretical efforts in understanding their properties. We discuss the main experimental probes and give an extensive account of theoretical approaches to understand the order parameter symmetries and the corresp…
We report superconductivity in the ternary half-Heusler compound LuPtBi, with Tc = 1.0 K and Hc2 = 1.6 T. The crystal structure of LuPtBi lacks inversion symmetry, hence the material is a noncentrosymmetric superconductor. Magnetotransport data show semimetallic behavior in the normal state, which is evidence for the importance of spin-orbit interaction. Theoretical calculations indicate that the strong spin-orbit interaction in LuPtBi should cause strong band inversion, making this material a promising candidate for 3D topological superconductivity.
The multipocket Fermi surfaces of iron-based superconductors promote pairing states with both s_{+-}-wave and d_{x^2-y^2}-wave symmetry. We argue that the competition between these two order parameters could lead to a time-reversal-symmetry breaking state with s+id-pairing symmetry in the iron-based superconductors, and propose serveral scenarios in which this phase may be found. To understand the emergence of such a pairing state on a more rigorous footing, we start from a microscopic 5-orbital description representative for the pnictides. Using a combined approach of functional renormalizati…
Superconducting materials with noncentrosymmetric lattices lacking space inversion symmetry exhibit a variety of interesting parity-breaking phenomena, including the magneto-electric effect, spin-polarized currents, helical states, and the unusual Josephson effect. We demonstrate, within a Ginzburg-Landau framework describing noncentrosymmetric superconductors with $O$ point group symmetry, that vortices can exhibit an inversion of the magnetic field at a certain distance from the vortex core. In stark contrast to conventional superconducting vortices, the magnetic-field reversal in the parity…
We analyze the effect of magnetic fluctuations in superconductors with strong spin-orbit coupling and show that they drive a phase transition between two superconducting states: a conventional phase with zero center-of-mass momentum of Cooper pairs, and an exotic phase with non-zero pair momentum. The latter is found to exhibit persistent currents without magnetic field in doubly connected geometries such as rings. Surprisingly, the transition temperature into the superconducting state can be increased by applying a Zeeman magnetic field.
We argue that that in their recent experiment in which they claim to have found evidence for a time-reversal symmetry broken state, Kaminski et al. overlooked small temperature dependent changes in the superstructure of Bi2212. These subtle changes may manifest themselves by changing the final state configurations of the photoemission process and thus invalidate their ultimate conclusions.
The search for broken time reversal symmetry (TRSB) in unconventional superconductors intensified in the past year as more systems have been predicted to possess such a state. Following our pioneering study of TRSB states in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ using magneto-optic probes, we embarked on a systematic study of several other of these candidate systems. The primary instrument for our studies is the Sagnac magneto-optic interferometer, which we recently developed. This instrument can measure magneto-optic Faraday or Kerr effects with an unprecedented sensitivity of 10 nanoradians at temperatures as low a…
The experimental transport scattering rate was determined for a wide range of optimally doped transition metal-substituted FeAs-based compounds with the ThCr2Si2 (122) crystal structure. The maximum transition temperature Tc for several Ba-, Sr-, and Ca-based 122 systems follows a universal rate of suppression with increasing scattering rate indicative of a common pair-breaking mechanism. Extraction of standard pair-breaking parameters puts a limit of \sim26 K on the maximum Tc for all transition metal-substituted 122 systems, in agreement with experimental observations, and sets a critical sc…
I study the effects of disorder on the superconductivity of a three-band model with repulsive interband pairing. Such a model can support several possible superconducting order parameters, including a complex time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) state. Impurity scattering suppresses the critical temperature of all these states, but the complex state survives, and remains a part of the phase diagram of the model even in the presence of moderate amount of disorder. This means that the TRSB states could be experimentally accessible in multiband materials like iron pnictides and chalcogenides.
We study the superconducting state of multi-orbital spin-orbit coupled systems in the presence of an orbitally driven inversion asymmetry assuming that the inter-orbital attraction is the dominant pairing channel. Although the inversion symmetry is absent, we show that superconducting states that avoid mixing of spin-triplet and spin-singlet configurations are allowed, and remarkably, spin-triplet states that are topologically nontrivial can be stabilized in a large portion of the phase diagram. The orbital-dependent spin-triplet pairing generally leads to topological superconductivity with po…
Topological crystalline superconductors have attracted rapidly rising attention due to the possibility of higher-order phases, which support Majorana modes on boundaries in $d-2$ or lower dimensions. However, although the classification and bulk topological invariants in such systems have been well studied, it is generally difficult to faithfully predict the boundary Majoranas from the band-structure information due to the lack of well-established bulk-boundary correspondence. Here we propose a protocol for deriving symmetry indicators that depend on a minimal set of necessary symmetry data of…
We have studied the effect of Ge substitution and pressure on the heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si. Ge substitution on the Si site acts as negative chemical pressure leading to an increase in the unit-cell volume but also introduces chemical disorder. We carried out electrical resistivity and ac heat-capacity experiments under hydrostatic pressure on CePt3Si1-xGex (x=0, 0.06). Our experiments show that the suppression of superconductivity in CePt3Si1-xGex is mainly caused by the scattering potential, rather than volume expansion, introduced by the Ge dopants. The antiferromagnetic order is…
We study superconductivity in spin-orbit-coupled systems in the vicinity of inversion symmetry breaking. We find that due to the presence of spin-orbit coupling, fluctuations of the incipient parity-breaking order generate an attractive pairing interaction in an odd-parity pairing channel, which competes with the s-wave pairing. We show that applying a Zeeman field suppresses the s-wave pairing and promotes the odd-parity superconducting state. Our work provides a new mechanism for odd-parity pairing and opens a route to novel topological superconductivity.
Electron irradiation has been used to introduce point defects in a controlled way in the CuO2 planes of underdoped and optimally doped YBCO. This technique allows us to perform very accurate measurements of Tc and of the residual resistivity in a wide range of defect contents xd down to Tc=0. The Tc decrease does not follow the variation expected from pair breaking theories. The evolutions of Tc and of the transition width with xd emphasize the importance of phase fluctuations, at least for the highly damaged regime. These results open new questions about the evolution of the defect induced Tc…
In materials without an inversion center of symmetry the spin degeneracy of the conducting band is lifted by an antisymmetric spin orbit coupling (ASOC). Under such circumstances, spin and parity cannot be separately used to classify the Cooper pairing states. Consequently, the superconducting order parameter is generally a mixture of spin singlet and triplet pairing states. In this paper we investigate the structure of the order parameter and its response to disorder for the most symmetric pairing state ($A_1$). Using the example of the heavy Fermion superconductor CePt$_3$Si, we determine ch…
We develop a microscopic and gauge-invariant theory for collective modes resulting from the phase of the superconducting order parameter in non-centrosymmetric superconductors. Considering various crystal symmetries we derive the corresponding gauge mode $ω_{\rm G}({\bf q})$ and find, in particular, new Leggett modes $ω_{\rm L}({\bf q})$ with characteristic properties that are unique to non-centrosymmetric superconductors. We calculate their mass and dispersion that reflect the underlying spin-orbit coupling and thus the balance between triplet and singlet superconductivity occurring simultane…
Topological materials which possess topologically protected surface states have attracted much attention in recent years. In this work, we study the critical current of superconductor/inversion symmetry breaking topological material/superconductor junctions. We found surprisingly that, in topological materials with broken inversion symmetry, the magnitude of the critical Josephson currents $|I^{+}_c(B)|$ at fixed magnetic field $B$ is not the same for critical currents $|I^{-}_c(B)|$ flowing in the opposite direction. Moreover, the critical currents violate the $| I_{c}^{\pm}(B)| = |I_{c}^{\pm…
Inversion symmetry is a key symmetry in unconventional superconductors and even its local breaking can have profound implications. For inversion-symmetric systems, there is a competition on a microscopic level between the spin-orbit coupling associated with the local lack of inversion and hybridizing terms that `restore' inversion. Investigating a layered system with alternating mirror-symmetry breaking, we study this competition considering the spin response of different superconducting order parameters for the case of strong spin-orbit coupling. We find that signatures of the local non-centr…
We investigate the impact of impurity scattering on superconductivity in an anisotropic multi-orbital model with spin-orbit coupling which describes the electron fluid at two-dimensional oxide interfaces. As the pairing mechanism is under debate, both conventional and unconventional superconducting states are analyzed. We consider magnetic and nonmagnetic spin-dependent intra- and interorbital scattering and discuss possible microscopic realizations leading to these processes. It is found that, for magnetic disorder, the unconventional superconductor is protected against interband scattering a…

Symmetry indicators have proven to be extremely helpful in identifying topologically non-trivial crystalline insulators using symmetry-group representations of their Bloch states. An extension of this approach to superconducting systems requires defining an appropriate atomic limit for Bogoliubov-de-Gennes Hamiltonians. Here, we introduce such a notion of atomic limit and derive a $\mathbb{Z}_{2^d}$-valued symmetry indicator for inversion-symmetric superconductors of $d$ dimensions. This indicator allows for a refined topological classification including higher-order phases for systems in the …
The spin-orbital polarization of superconducting excitations in momentum space is shown to provide distinctive marks of unconventional pairing in the presence of inversion symmetry breaking.Taking the prototypical example of an electronic system with atomic spin-orbit and orbital-Rashba couplings, we provide a general description of the spin-orbital textures and their most striking changeover moving from the normal to the superconducting state. We find that the variation of the spin-texture is strongly imprinted by the combination of the misalignment of spin-triplet d-vector with the inversion…
We perform the scanning tunneling spectroscopy based superconductor-vacuum-superconductor analogue to the seminal McMillan and Rowell superconductor-insulator-superconductor device study of phonons in the archetypal elemental superconductor Pb [W. L. McMillan and J. M. Rowell, Phys. Rev. Lett. 14, 108 (1965)]. We invert this spectroscopic data utilizing strong-coupling Eliashberg theory to obtain a local α^2F(ω) and find broad underlying agreement with the pioneering results, highlighted by previously unobserved electron-hole asymmetries and new fine structure which we discuss in terms of both…
Motivated by Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, edge quasiparticle states are analyzed based on the self-consistent solution of the Bogolyubov-de Gennes equations for a topological chiral $p$-wave superconductor. Using a tight-binding model of a square lattice for the dominant $γ$-band we explore the non-trivial geometry and band structure dependence of the edge states and currents. As a peculiar finding we show that for high band fillings currents flow in reversed direction comparing straight and zigzag edges. We give a simple explanation in terms of the positions of the zero-energy bound states using a quasi-cl…
We demonstrate that, in contrast to the single-component Abrikosov vortex, in two-component superconductors vortex solutions with exponentially screened magnetic field exist only in exceptional cases: in the case of vortices carrying an integer number of flux quanta, and in a special parameter limit for half-quantum vortices. For all other parameters the vortex solutions have delocalized magnetic field with a slowly decaying tail. Furthermore, we demonstrate a new effect which is generic in two-component systems but has no counterpart in single-component systems: on exactly half of the paramet…
We investigate the magnetization processes of a standard Ginzburg-Landau model for chiral p-wave superconducting states in an applied magnetic field. We find that the phase diagram is dominated by triangular lattices of doubly quantized vortices. Only in close vicinity to the upper critical field, the lattice starts to dissociate into a structure of single-quanta vortices. The degeneracy between states with opposite chirality is broken in a nonzero field. If the magnetization starts with an energetically unfavorable chirality, the process of chirality-inversion induced by the external magnetic…
