We study the effects of heavy quarks on the equation of state for cold and dense quark matter obtained from perturbative QCD, yielding observables parametrized only by the renormalization scale. We investigate the thermodynamics of charm quark matter under the constraints of $β$ equilibrium and electric charge neutrality in a region of densities where perturbative QCD is, in principle, much more reliable. We also analyze the stability of charm stars, which might be realized as a new branch of ultradense hybrid compact stars, and find that such quark stars are unstable under radial oscillations.
The recent experimental results on the flow of $J/ψ$ at LHC show that ample amount of charm quarks is present in the quark gluon plasma and probably they are thermalized. In the current study we investigate the effect of thermalized charm quarks on the heavy quark energy loss to leading order in the QCD coupling constant. It is seen that the energy loss of charm quark increases due to the inclusion of thermal charm quarks. Running coupling has also been implemented to study heavy quark energy loss and we find a modest increase in the heavy quark energy loss due to heavy-heavy scattering at hig…
We study the properties of charmonium states at finite temperature in quenched lattice QCD on large and fine isotropic lattices. We perform a detailed analysis of charmonium correlation and spectral functions both below and above Tc. Our analysis suggests that the S wave states disappear at about 1.5 Tc. The charm diffusion coefficient is estimated and found to be approximately 1/πT at 1.5Tc {\leq} T {\leq} 3Tc.
Simple experimental tests are proposed which can clarify the origin for the anomalously high $η'$ appearance in charmless strange final states in $B$ decays and can investigate the the nature of SU(3) symmetry-breaking in weak heavy flavor decays.
Thirty years ago, Matsui and Satz proposed the $J/ψ$ destruction as a signal of a Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) formation, due to the Debye screening between the pair c-cbar. At the light of the recent experimental data, I review the different effects on $J/ψ$ production, from SPS to LHC energies, distinguishing between Cold Nuclear Matter (CNM) and QGP effects. Different possibilities and explanations for the available experimental data are discussed. Model predictions for the arriving LHC data are also presented.
By solving the rate equation in an expanding quark-gluon plasma, we study thermal production of charm quarks in central Pb+Pb collisions at the Future Circular Collider. With the charm quark production cross section taken from the perturbative QCD at the next-to-leading order, we find that charm quark production from the quark-gluon plasma can be appreciable compared to that due to initial hard scattering between colliding nucleons.
Heavy flavor supplies a chance to constrain and improve the hadronization mechanism. We have established a sequential coalescence model with charm conservation and applied it to the charmed hadron production in heavy ion collisions. The charm conservation enhances the earlier hadron production and suppresses the later production. This relative enhancement (suppression) changes significantly the ratios between charmed hadrons in heavy ion collisions.
A brief overview of the theory of charmonium suppression in heavy ion collisions is presented. In particular I will concentrate on the effects caused by the hot, deconfined medium and on the effort to treat them using field-theoretical, QCD-based techniques, such as lattice QCD and Effective Field Theories.
Recent developments in the theoretical evaluation of charmonium production in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions (URHIC's) are discussed. In particular, the consequences of equilibrium properties of open and hidden charm states -- accessible, {\it e.g.}, in QCD lattice gauge calculations -- are assessed. These include abundances as well as formation and dissociation rates of charmonia in both hadronic and quark-gluon matter.
In this paper we show that the intrinsic heavy-quark QCD mechanism for the hadroproduction of heavy hadrons at large $x_F$ can resolve the apparent conflict between measurements of double-charm baryons by the SELEX fixed-target experiment and the LHCb experiment at the LHC collider. We show that both experiments are compatible, and that both results can be correct. The observed spectroscopy of double-charm hadrons is in agreement with the predictions of supersymmetric light front holographic QCD.
Charm-hadrons possess versatile hadro-chemistry as characterized by various transverse-momentum-dependent ratios between their different species. In particular, the charm hadro-chemistry may be modified in relativistic heavy-ion collisions with respect to proton-proton collisions at the same energy, as caused by novel diffusion and hadronization mechanisms of charm quarks in the environment of the created quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in the former. Inspired by recent measurements of leptons from charm-hadron decays (separated from bottom decays) in Pb-Pb and Au-Au collisions, we investigate the ef…
Recent data on the production of $D$ mesons and $Λ_c^+$ baryons in heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider exhibit a number of striking characteristics such as enhanced yield ratios $D_s^+/D^0$, $Λ_c^+/D^0$ and their transverse momentum dependences. In this paper, we derive the momentum dependence of open charm mesons and singly charmed baryons produced in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions via the equal-velocity quark combination. We present analytic expressions and numerical results of yield ratios and compare them with the experimental …
The production of charmonia in heavy-ion collisions is investigated within a kinetic theory framework simultaneously accounting for dissociation and regeneration processes in both quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and hadron-gas phases of the reaction. In-medium modifications of open-charm states (c-quarks, D-mesons) and the survival of J/psi mesons in the QGP are included as inferred from lattice QCD. Pertinent consequences on equilibrium charmonium abundances are evaluated and found to be especially relevant to explain the measured centrality dependence of the psi'/psi ratio at SPS. Predictions for r…
The masses of the excited heavy tetraquarks with hidden charm are calculated within the relativistic diquark-antidiquark picture. The dynamics of the light quark in a heavy-light diquark is treated completely relativistically. The diquark structure is taken into account by calculating the diquark-gluon form factor. New experimental data on charmonium-like states above open charm threshold are discussed. The obtained results indicate that X(3872), Y(4260), Y(4360), Z(4248), Z(4433) and Y(4660) could be tetraquark states with hidden charm.
In the first part of the talk, we briefly review the problem of parton-energy loss and thermalization at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider and discuss how heavy quarks (charm and bottom) can help to resolve the existing experimental and theoretical puzzles. The second part of the talk is devoted to the properties of heavy quarkonia in the (strongly interacting) Quark-Gluon Plasma (sQGP) and their consequences for observables in heavy-ion collisions.
In the paper we discuss contribution of the doubly intrinsic heavy mechanism into the production of $B_c$ meson, the doubly heavy baryons and the all-charm tetraquark at a future fixed-target experiment at the LHC (AFTER@LHC). The production cross sections and the mean values of Feynman-x for the finale states are presented.
Within the framework of heavy quark effective theory and chiral perturbation theory, masses and splittings of heavy charm mesons are studied. A mass formula is used for comprehensive analysis of low lying charm meson states. The variation of mass splittings and spin splittings with respect to various symmetry conserving and symmetry breaking parameters have also been focussed.
We discuss the dynamics in finite density medium including a heavy impurity particle (hadron or quark) with a heavy flavor, charm and bottom, at zero temperature. As a system, we consider a $\bar{D}$ ($B$) meson embedded in nuclear matter as a heavy impurity boson with SU(2) isospin symmetry. As another system, we also consider a charm (bottom) quark embedded in quark matter as a heavy impurity fermion with SU(3) color symmetry. We suppose a vector current interaction with SU($n$) symmetry ($n \ge 2$) for the fermion composing the Fermi surface and the embedded heavy impurity particle, and cal…
Charmonium production in heavy-ion collisions is investigated within a kinetic theory framework incorporating in-medium properties of open- and hidden-charm states in line with recent QCD lattice calculations. A continuously decreasing open-charm threshold across the phase boundary of hadronic and quark-gluon matter is found to have important implications for the equilibrium abundance of charmonium states. The survival of $J/ψ$ resonance states above the transition temperature enables their recreation also in the Quark-Gluon Plasma. Including effects of chemical and thermal off-equilibrium, we…
Important goals of RHIC and LHC experiments with ion beams include the creation and study of new forms of matter, such as the Quark Gluon Plasma. Heavy quark production and attenuation will provide unique tomographic probes of that matter. We predict the suppression pattern of open charm and beauty in $Au+Au$ collisions at RHIC and LHC energies based on the DGLV formalism of radiative energy loss. A cancelation between effects due to the $\sqrt{s}$ energy dependence of the high $p_T$ slope and heavy quark energy loss is predicted to lead to surprising similarity of heavy quark suppression at R…
Based on the color-spin interaction in diquarks, we argue that charmed multiquark hadrons are likely to exist. Because of the appreciable number of charm quarks produced in central nucleus-nucleus collisions at ultrarelativistic energies, production of charmed multiquark hadrons is expected to be enhanced in these collisions. Using both the quark coalescence model and the statistical hadronization model, we estimate the yield of charmed tetraquark meson $T_{cc}$ and pentaquark baryon $Θ_{cs}$ in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. We further discuss the decay modes of these charmed exotic ha…
We consider the photo-excitation of charm and bottom pentaquarks with the holographic assignments $[\frac 12\frac 12^-]_{S=0,1}$ and $[\frac 12\frac 32^-]_{S=1}$, in the photo-production of heavy vector mesons such as charmonia and bottomonia near threshold. We use a Witten diagram to combine the s-channel photo-excitation of holographic pentaquarks with a massive t-channel graviton or tensor glueball exchange, to extract the scattering amplitude for heavy meson photo-production in the threshold region. The pentaquark signal is too weak to be detected at current electron facilities.
We compute the charm drag and diffusion coefficients in a hot pion gas, such as is formed in a Heavy Ion Collision after the system cools sufficiently to transit into the hadron phase. We fully exploit Heavy Quark Effective Theory (with both D and D* mesons as elementary degrees of freedom during the collision) and Chiral Perturbation Theory, and employ standard unitarization to reach higher temperatures. We find that a certain friction and shear diffusion coefficients are almost p-independent at fixed temperature which simplifies phenomenological analysis. At the higher end of reliability of …
We study the production of charmonia and charmed hadrons in nucleus-nucleus collisions at SPS, RHIC, and LHC energies within the framework of the statistical hadronization model. Results from this model are compared to the measured yields and centrality dependence of J/psi production at SPS and RHIC energies. We explore and contrast the centrality dependence of the production of mesons with open and hidden charm at SPS, RHIC, and LHC. The sensitivity of the results to various input parameters is analyzed in detail for RHIC energy.
The P-wave charm-strange mesons $D_{s0}(2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2460)$ lie below the $DK$ and $D^\ast K$ threshold respectively. They are extremely narrow because their strong decays violate the isospin symmetry. We study the possible heavy molecular states composed of a pair of excited charm strange mesons. As a byproduct, we also present the numerical results for the bottonium-like analogue.
In heavy quarkonia, hadronic transitions serve as an enlightened probe for the structure and help to establish the understanding of light quark coupling with a heavy degree of freedom. Moreover, in recent years, hadronic transitions revealed remarkable discoveries to identify the new conventional heavy quarkonia and extracting useful information about the so called "XYZ" exotic states. In this contribution, we present our predictions for heavy quark spin symmetry (HQSS) breaking hadronic transitions of higher $S$ and $D$ wave vector charmonia based on our recently proposed model (inspired by N…
We review the technique of heavy quark mass expansion of various operators made of heavy quark fields using a semiclassical approximation. It corresponds to an operator product expansion in the form of series in the inverse heavy quark mass. This technique applied recently to the axial current is used to estimate the charm content of the η, η' mesons and the intrinsic charm contribution to the proton spin. The derivation of heavy quark mass expansion for Qbar γ_5 Q is given here in detail and the expansions of the scalar, vector and tensor current and of a contribution to the energy-momentum t…
Transport and Langevin equations are employed to study hadronic medium effects on charmonium elliptic flows in heavy-ion collisions. In Pb-Pb collisions, the anisotropic energy density of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in the transverse plane is transformed into hadron momentum anisotropy after the phase transition. Charmonia with high transverse momentum $p_T$ are produced via the primordial hard process and undergo different degrees of dissociation along different paths in the QGP. They then scatter with light hadrons in the hadron phase. Both contributions to the charmonium elliptic flows are…
We employ a modified cascade hydrodynamics code to simulate the phase transition of an expanding quark-gluon plasma and the passage of a charmed particle through it. When inside the plasma droplets, the charmed quark experiences drag and diffusion forces. When outside the plasma, the quark travels as a $D$ meson and experiences collisions with pions. Additional energy transfer takes place when the quark enters or leaves a droplet. We find that the transverse momentum of $D$ mesons provides a rough thermometer of the phase transition.
The open-charm Euclidean correlators have been computed for the first time using the thermal spectral functions extracted from a finite-temperature self-consistent unitarized approach based on a chiral effective field theory that implements heavy-quark spin symmetry. The inclusion of the full-energy dependent open-charm spectral functions in the calculation of the Euclidean correlators leads to a similar behaviour as the one obtained in lattice QCD for temperatures well below the transition deconfinement temperature. The discrepancies at temperatures close or above the transition deconfinement…
In this paper we review the hadroproduction mechanisms of double-charm baryons for the different experimental environments and reinterpret the SELEX and LHCb results.
We study the relative contribution of partonic sub-processes to D meson production and D meson-triggered inclusive di-hadrons to lowest order in perturbative QCD. While gluon fusion dominates the creation of large angle DD-bar pairs, charm on light parton scattering determines the yield of single inclusive D mesons. The distinctly different non-perturbative fragmentation of c quarks into D mesons versus the fragmentation of quarks and gluons into light hadrons results in a strong transverse momentum dependence of anticharm content of the away-side charm-triggered jet. In p+A reactions, we calc…
We present results on rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of inclusive charm quark production in hadronic and heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies, including the next-to-leading order, $O(α_s^3)$, radiative corrections and the nuclear shadowing effect. We determine the hadronic and the {\it effective} (in-medium) K-factor for the differential and total inclusive charm cross sections. We find the fraction of central and inelastic events that contain at least one charm quark pair at LHC energies and obtain the effective $A$-dependence of the inclusive charm production in prot…
We consider heavy mesons with charm and bottom in nuclear medium. We construct the effective Lagrangian with axial-vector coupling including 1/M-corrections for the heavy meson mass $M$ by following the velocity-rearrangement invariance. As an application, we consider heavy mesons, $\bar{\mathrm{D}}$ and $\bar{\mathrm{D}}^{\ast}$ mesons for charm and $\mathrm{B}$ and $\mathrm{B}^{\ast}$ mesons for bottom, bound in nuclear matter, and we discuss their in-medium masses modified by the interaction with nucleons via pion exchanges including the 1/M-corrections. The mass modifications are affected …
Recent experiments at Fermilab and CERN have observed a strong asymmetry between the hadroproduction cross sections of leading $D$ mesons, containing projectile valence quarks, and nonleading charmed mesons, without projectile valence quarks. The observed correlations of the $π^{\pm} N \to D^\pm X$ cross section with the projectile charge violates the usual assumption that heavy quark jet fragmentation factorizes. We examine the asymmetry between leading and nonleading charm production as a function of $x_f$ and $p_T^2$ assuming a two-component model combining leading-twist fusion subprocesses…
Charm asymmetries in fixed-target hadroproduction experiments are sensitive to power corrections to the QCD factorization theorem for heavy quark production. A power correction called heavy-quark recombination has recently been proposed to explain these asymmetries. In heavy-quark recombination, a light quark or antiquark participates in a hard scattering which produces a charm-anticharm quark pair. The light quark or antiquark emerges from the scattering with small momentum in the rest frame of the charm quark, and together they hadronize into a charm particle. The cross section for this proc…
The Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE) has become an extremely powerful tool in flavor physics. For charm decays, where the expansion parameters $α_s(m_c)$ and $Λ_{\rm QCD}/m_c$ are bigger than for bottom decays, it remains to be seen if the HQE can be applied with similar success. Nevertheless, to make optimal use of the plethora of data already available and coming in the near future, a better understanding of HQE for charm decays is crucial. This paper discusses in detail how the HQE for charm decays is set up, what is the role of four-quark (weak annihilation) operators and how this compares to t…
Charm and bottom baryons and mesons are studied within the framework of a relativistically covariant 3D reduction of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. We carry out an analysis of semileptonic decays of heavy hadrons within this framework using explicit oscillator-type wave functions where we calculate Isgur-Wise functions, decay rates and asymmetry parameters. Within this model we also study the effect of interactions between the light quarks inside the heavy baryon and how they affect the values of the computed heavy baryon observables. We also elaborate on the role of relativistic effects in the …
We consider the production of the open charm and J/psi mesons in heavy ion collisions at BNL RHIC. We discuss several recently developed pictures for J/psi production and argue that a measurement at RHIC energies is crucial for disentangling these different descriptions.
The asymmetries between charm and anticharm mesons observed in fixed-target photoproduction experiments are an order of magnitude larger than the asymmetries predicted by conventional perturbative QCD. We show that these charm meson asymmetries can be explained by a heavy-quark recombination mechanism for heavy meson production. In this process, a charm quark combines with a light antiquark from the hard-scattering process and they subsequently hadronize into a state including the charm meson. This recombination mechanism can be calculated within perturbative QCD up to some nonperturbative con…
In the framework of the quark combination, we derive the yield formulas and study the yield ratios of the hidden-charm pentaquark states in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. We propose some interesting yield ratios which clearly exhibit the production relationships between different hidden-charm pentaquark states. We show how to employ a specific quark combination model to evaluate the yields of exotic $P_c^+(4380)$, $P_c^+(4450)$ and their partners on the basis of reproducing the yields of normal identified hadrons, and execute the calculations in central Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{…
We present a new model for the description of heavy-quark hadronization in relativistic heavy-ion collisions in the presence of a reservoir of lighter thermal particles with which recombination can occur leading to the formation of color-singlet clusters. Color neutralization is assumed to occur locally, within the same fluid cell occupied by the heavy quark and it proceeds via the recombination of the latter with light antiquarks (quarks) or diquarks (anti-diquarks), which are assumed to be present in the medium with thermal abundance as effective degrees of freedom around the QCD crossover t…

Recent lattice QCD data on higher order susceptibilities of Charm quarks provide the opportunity to explore Charm quark equilibration in the early quark gluon plasma (QGP) phase. Here, we propose to use the lattice data on second and fourth order net Charm susceptibilities to infer the Charm quark equilibration temperature and the corresponding volume, in the early QGP stage, via a combined analysis of experimentally measured multiplicity fluctuations. Furthermore, the first perturbative results for the second and fourth order Charm quark susceptibilities and their ratio are presented.
The RHIC data on charm production are compared with the kT-factorization approach predictions, both standard NLO QCD and FONLL. The calculated results underestimate the STAR Collaboration data. The role of possible nuclear effects is discussed.
We evaluate exclusive semileptonic decays of ground-state spin-1/2 doubly heavy charmed baryons. The decays are driven by a $c\to s,d$ transition at the quark level. Our form factors are consistent with Heavy Quark Symmetry constraints. The latter are valid in the limit of infinitely heavy quark mass at zero recoil.
We study the effect of energy loss on charm and bottom quarks in high-energy heavy-ion collisions including longitudinal expansion and partial thermalization. We find that high $p_\perp$ heavy quarks are greatly suppressed, and consequently, high-mass dileptons from heavy quark decays are also suppressed. We consider in detail the detector geometry and single lepton energy cuts of the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Because of the longitudinal expansion, the suppressions of $ee, eμ$ and $μμ$ pairs resulting from the heavy quark energy loss are very different due …
We investigate the impact of the intrinsic heavy quark states on the predicted values of CP asymmetries in the decays of heavy mesons. It is shown that the intrinsic charm contribution, although dynamically suppressed in QCD, is favored by the weak interaction, and therefore it can significantly dilute the predicted values of CP-violating asymmetries. This introduces additional non-perturbative uncertainty into the estimate of direct CP violating effects. We provide a phenomenological estimate of intrinsic charm content of eta and eta' mesons by expanding various amplitudes in terms of the hea…
We show that one can re-arrange the Heavy Quark Expansion for inclusive weak decays of charmed hadrons in such a way that the resulting expansion is an expansion in $Λ_{\rm QCD} / m_c$ and $α_s (m_c)$ with order-one coefficients. Unlike in the case of the bottom quark, the leading term includes not only the contribution of the free-quark decay, but also a tower of terms related to matrix elements of four quark operators.
Using the two-component model that includes charmonium production from initial nucleon-nucleon hard scattering and regeneration in the produced quark-gluon plasma, we study $J/ψ$ production in heavy ion collisions at SPS, RHIC and LHC. For the expansion dynamics of produced hot dense matter, we use a schematic viscous hydrodynamic model with the specific shear viscosity taken, respectively, to be twice and ten times the lower bound of $1/4π$ suggested by the Ads/CFT correspondence in the quark-gluon plasma and in the hadron gas. For the initial dissociation and the subsequent thermal decay of …
We present the mass formula for heavy-light charm meson for one loop, using heavy quark effective theory. Formulating an effective Lagrangian, the masses of the ground state heavy mesons have been studied in the heavy quark limit including leading corrections from finite heavy quark masses and nonzero light quark masses using a constrained fit for the eight equation having eleven parameters including three coupling constants g, h and g'. Masses determined from this approach is fitted to the experimentally known decay widths to estimate the strong coupling constants, showing a better match with…
The framework of the expansion by subgraphs is used to compute asymptotic expansions for the vector and the tensor currents in the limit of large quark masses. We use the results to obtain an estimate for the influence of heavy quarks on the nucleon electromagnetic and tensor form factors.
We study the prospects to get information about the early and hot stages of deconfined matter produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions by analyzing dilepton and single-lepton spectra. Energy losses of heavy quarks in deconfined matter and thermalization effects in hadron matter and their influence on lepton spectra are considered.
